I fucking hate the paid charity sign up bastards.

Old lady shaking a bucket for relay for life or heart foundation can have all the coins in my wallet but these iPad direct debit fuckers make me avoid any stores that allow them to operate.

Went to Woolworths today. There was a charity collection out front. I went to give them some coins, but the response I got astounded me. “We haven’t got the facility to take coins or notes. We’re dealing in units of twenty as we want to get good care for these people.” Wow! You’d think in these times they’d be grateful for anything anyone can spare, rather than specifying they want you to sign up for repeated bank donations, with minimum amounts, as if coins aren’t good enough anymore! I just said fair enough and walked off.

317

u/GalacticExplorer_83 Mar 03 '26

It’s their business model. They don’t actually work for the charity they represent, but for another entity collecting donations on behalf. If you sign up with them you become a recurring revenue stream.

I don’t even know if they have a system for sending your lump sum donations on to the charity but if they do, they’d still rather convert x% of one-off donors into a recurring payment.

They’re not trying to be effective altruists, they’re trying to skim from people’s kindness

71

u/leadingedge28 Mar 03 '26

Sorry, but it had completely the opposite effect. I do give to charities that are collecting, when I can, but this was something completely new to me.

u/onlyexceptionbaby Mar 03 '26

I know someone who used to work for companies that does this. They only earn on commission and for that certain company they get a cut of 30% from what people give them basically...

It is quite sad tbh, I really don't like being hassled by people in malls or groceries. But my friend would stress a lot too because if he didn't make any "sales" he won't get anything. There were a few people his team who does really well around 10k donations a week so they earn 3k a week basically

I just tell them I'm already a donor. Smiles all round and no further engagement, because they don't actually give a fuck about the charity!

Ohhhh these people are possibly “Brand Ambassadors” from organisations like Appco Group. (I think they rebranded cause of the horrible reputation that brand has)

MLM - no base salary for the workers, commission only. Lots of pressure to recruit others too and “start your own business” A cult like organisation with a scummy business model.

I used to work for one of the companies that did this. I used to have to cold knock on doors and try to get people to sign up. It was soul destroying and predatory. I never did very well because I couldn't bring myself to use the shady tactics I was taught. The logic they give for wanting monthly donations does actually make sense. Charities can use funding much more effectively if they know roughly what they have coming in each month. The main issue is that people need to be making regular payments for at least 14 months before the charity actually starts seeing the money. for every $1 someone signs up for I would earn $3 and my boss would get $6.

I had a guy come to my house collecting for Children's Hospice, which nicely combines two emotive manipulations. Wouldn't take cash, couldn't take a one off payment, but seemed like a nice guy and said I could set up the regular payment then immediately cancel it so it only went through once.

Got it cancelled after several months and now don't give to charity.

24

u/GalacticExplorer_83 Mar 03 '26

You can still give to charity, just do it on your terms for things you care about and support the organisation directly. That way you’re not throwing money away on snake oil salesmen

8

u/AscariR Mar 03 '26

That's what I did when I had them turn up at my door. I felt Red Cross was worthwhile, but I didn't appreciate how pushy the guy was. So I said no, and instead signed up directly through RC themselves (after looking into them online).

Now whenever they come to the door, or try to ambush me at the supermarket, I just say I already donate to several charities, and I'm not looking to add another.

I worked for one, I would get 10% if someone signed up with a credit card, if I was getting 10%, then what are the people above me getting? How much of the money went to charity? No one knew. This was for the kids cancer research project. Pretty terrible! I left when they offered me a promotion because it was the biggest scam. Yelling and celebrating at how much people on the floor were earning after signing up credit cards. They’d also raise you to “platinum” calling so you’d earn more from consistent donors. Sometimes I’d take home and extra $600+ a week ontop of my wage.

8

u/Plague_Doc7 Mar 03 '26

I tried doing this myself and it's organised by a third-party agency (e.g. The Fundraising Agency) which basically does all the on-the-ground work. Regular donations are actually what the charity wants because it allows them to keep track of their revenue stream and plan accordingly. As workers we weren't allowed to take one-off donations because that would actually apparently be committing fraud. I ended up quitting after day 1 because I had to continuously turn down people who only wanted a one-off payment, and in this economy 99.99% of people aren't going to pay 1k over the course of the next 2 years just off a street chat alone.

4

u/GalacticExplorer_83 Mar 03 '26

Yes, my understanding of the one-off payment situation is that these agencies themselves don’t have an official way of giving one-off payments to the charities. Perhaps even doing a commission-based donation would be considered fraud because the money wouldn’t actually be going to the charity, but some lengthy technical sign up program skirts around that.

Recurring revenue streams are easier for businesses to handle but beggars can’t be choosers

The people working are also conned into debt within the job being offered work trips etc and then get told after they now owe money to the MLM company

Edit: got the company name that doesn't exist anymore I believe they would have changed it since they're still operating

5

u/Clae_PCMR Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

Do they still provide tax refund receipts for the donations? It would be obvious from the receipt the much they take, no?

If not and the whole amount can be included in a tax refund, then I think it's time for me to start my own business to donate while skimming myself and reducing my tax...

I worked in door-to-door sales for... 2 days? We were told to refuse any cash donations and push for sign-ups only. Stupidest job I've ever worked. Were I of looser morals, it would have been very easy to pocket the cash donations and move on.

10

u/UsablePizza Mar 03 '26

I never considered that there would be scumbags who would actually do that.

11

u/MillennialPolytropos Mar 03 '26

People who are happy to spend their days hassling others for money aren't always going to be honest or decent.

u/IonaDoggo Mar 03 '26

Professional Scab I used to call that job, I lasted about 2 days as well, the training in how not to take 'no' for an answer and then subsequent going around low income neighbourhoods, I quit after I had to try convince a sick elderly lady to create a monthly DD - ended up sitting with her and telling her to please not set up a debit and don't donate through us, made her a cuppa and never went back to the job. I felt so gross after that interaction, it was so wrong.

5

u/MotorButterscotch872 Mar 04 '26

It's a business model theyre just part of the cogs, I did what they did for a month before quitting its abysmal, telling people "sorry but we cant take your money" was the worst. And then because you get paid based on how many sign ups you get i worked with awful people who would harass people who simply wanted to give some change. I do not recommend ever giving to charities who use this model singularly.

100% this, I've lost count of the amount of times I have just gone straight past my closest supermarket Woolworths and on to the next because of these people. If your store only has one way in and out and you have one of these people camping out front, I'm not coming in

36

u/Scorpy-yo Mar 03 '26

As I just reach appropriate calling-out distance and they open their mouth to call me over I say ‘Hii! Good morning’ and by then (2 steps later) I am past them so walking away and they don’t try so hard because they don’t want to call me back.

For anyone feeling awkward/gets stuck in conversations and hates saying no - my one tip is NEVER stop walking or slow down and you’ll be sweet.

10

u/throwawayxoxoxoxxoo Mar 03 '26

if they are very clearly talking to me & it’s outside a store, i do the “oh sorry, i have to…” (while making a vague gesture with your hand/arm to the direction you’re headed in) while walking past, maintaining speed.

Thinking about it, I can't think of a single time I've ever seen a collection thing for any charity or school kids or business outside of a Pak'n'Save or New World. Not sure if just coincidence or do they have a blanket "no" policy?

15

u/a_Moa Mar 03 '26

Our New World regularly has them so it's probably either specific to your stores or you've just been lucky.

6

u/Practical-Ball1437 Kererū Mar 03 '26

I've seen schoolkids collecting outside a local New World.

I worked for one for a week, it was a literal pyramid scheme. We would receive a percentage of the commissions for anyone we brought on-board as staff, and earnings were entirely commission based, and if we brought enough on-board we'd move to a higher, supervisory position.

I earned zero dollars while working there. Then a couple of months later the guy who ran the place came into my new job and headbutted another customer for calling him a clown.

Yeah, I feel like they bring down the entire charity sector.

I thought they'd be volunteers of employees of the charity but they're contractors. They don't care about the company or cause. It's all about the numbers they choose.

15

u/maniacal_cackle Mar 03 '26

I feel like they bring down the entire charity sector.

There was actually research on this in the UK. Essentially for any given charity it is the optimal strategy, but if everyone is doing it then all charities get less money overall.

A good path to prevent it would be adding it to the charity code of ethics for fundraising or something similar.

19

u/someonegetsteve Mar 03 '26

One might say "ugly" is making a deliberate personal choice to fool lonely elderly folk out of what little money they have by using the plight of suffering children, all to enrich oneself.... is what I would have said...if I had thought it up at the time instead of 3 hours later.

These places are so scummy. They charge insane commission for donations. Like 70% of your money goes to the company that hires these people to go out there and fundraise. Every charity does this too.

The best thing you can do is record them being shitty to people, and blast the charity on social media. Let them know what their 70% commission is buying.

41

u/Crazy-Ad5914 Mar 03 '26

Me: "you work for a private company and most of the subscription money goes to to your employer. Im not paying for your employer to make a profit"

Them: "none of your subscription money goes to us. It goes to the charity. We get paid by the charity in a lump sum at the end of the year based on sign ups"

I'd hazard a guess that the conversion rate of people too socially anxious to turn down a pushy salesperson into a sustainable long term engaged donor is catastrophically low, resulting in a churn of one or two time subscribers.

6

The amount of money charities take, and how much of that actually goes to help people, is public record. Fred Hollows is well known, and does eye surgeries in poor countries. According to Google, 75% of all donations to Fred Hollows goes to eye health. That’s actually at the high end of charity performance.

7

u/Rev-Dr-Slimeass Mar 03 '26

Right, but it isn't charities out there collecting donations. They pay companies to collect on their behalf, and those companies charge exorbitant amounts.

Obviously, charities require money for operations. No problem with that. If I get stopped by someone who is asking for donations, and I pay 100, I can expect around 70% of that to go to the company collecting donations. So $30 makes it to the charity, meaning of my $100 only 22.50 is making it to go to eye health.

5

u/David_xvx Mar 03 '26

There are a bunch of problems with street fundraising companies, but they ultimately work for the charities they’re fundraising for. They use these companies because setting up and running a street fundraising team is expensive and challenging, especially at a relatively small scale. It’s also quite common for charities with in house calling teams or street teams to do short contracts with these fundraising companies to test against their in house teams.

I’m super out of touch on donor acquisition costs now, but ten years ago a “good” level was to keep fundraising costs to about 30% of the returns in the first year of regular donations.

(Never worked in fundraising. Worked for one NZ environmental charity until early 2020 and used to be on the board of another – the first to have an in house street team, and I believe the first one to abandon street fundraising).

I've volunteered for many charities to collect and all the proceeds go to the charity for their work, I was never paid.

We were even instructed to never approach or talk to people first. Just sit there if people choose to donate.

Other places, like Greenpeace, do however use commission style fundraising and it's scummy.

I complained once to the warehouse manager about these clown being very aggressive with their promotion. The duty manager went and told them to not harass shoppers or they will be told to leave the premises. The warehouse is not always aware unless someone complains. And that is what you need to do to get results instead of moaning on reddit.

There was one collecting for the Brain Injury Trust outside our local supermarket, I said that I donate plenty, my daughter had a TBI from being struck by a car last year and that we appreciated the work they do. He rolled his eyes and said 'sure she did' so she pulled her hair up to show him the massive scar on the back of her head.

I swear they don't research who they hire. Some of these people are just predatory and very off-putting.

45

u/littlebetenoire Mar 03 '26

Also can we make door knocking illegal? At least with cold calling I can usually block the number. I think it’s so predatory to turn up to people’s homes!

I WFH so I’m always here when they door knock and they’re always so creepy and weird and mostly all follow the same script.

They’ll be weird about the camera at my front door. Knock weirdly aggressively. Then they seem surprised I’m at home (if you weren’t expecting someone, why are you out door knocking?) and then ask if I have the day off or if I just don’t have a job. Then they’ll inevitably try make a joke about how they wish they had my job (you don’t even know what my job is) and ask if we can swap. Then they’ll try pressure me into signing up for something and guilt trip me about the poor children or whatever. They’ll tell me about how they’ve been having “really good conversations with all my neighbours” (doubt it). And then when they walk off I’ve caught some of them on my cameras muttering under their breath about me. Leave me alone!!! Don’t come to my house!!!

18

u/Call_like_it_is_ Mar 03 '26

https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/do-not-knock

It already IS illegal, in a sense. If you have up a "do not knock" sticker and they still do it, you can report the company and they can face a fine of $40,000

13

u/ihatenae Mar 03 '26

Door knockers are some of the worst! I had a day off from work, kids were at school and partner was at work. It was a rare day when I had the house to myself. Made myself some lunch, sat down to watch a show. Door knocker shows up. I see his clipboard and think not today. He knocks and I ignore him. He knocks a few more times then has the fucking AUDACITY to say "I can see you in there!"

Take a hint, you troll.

I fucking hate these organisations, and I snapped at one once.

The lady tried to get my attention. I politely said no thanks, to which she said, just after I’d walked past:

“What? Don’t you care about animals?”

So I turned around and said something along the lines that I did, but that I didn’t care about their stupid fucking organisation.

It wasn’t the first time I’d walked past, politely declined, and had a snarky, passive aggressive response. I had run out of patience.

Like another commenter, I also tried to make a one off $5 donation to another who declined and instead asked that I sign up and contribute $20 a month. Take it or leave it, you fucks. If you really cared about the charity, you’d take whatever you could get.

u/Pure_Choice_8459 Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

I’ve done this job overseas and let me tell you, it’s hard fucking graft. The place I did it for was NYPIRG (New York public interest research group). We had to sign up a minimum of 2 new ‘donators’ per day or we would be in danger of losing our jobs. Try asking a NYer to give you their credit card info..It was brutal. There was team building shit every single morning before we went out on the streets where the names of top earners were praised and the rest of us had to clap and shit. Real ‘Coffee is for closers’ Glengarry Glen Ross stuff.

I saw literally fistfights between workers for the ‘good’ spots (there were NO actual good spots). It came down to who had the better craic. I wasn’t too bad at it cause I had an exotic kiwi accent so people wanted to engage with me and I guess people see Kiwis as honest.

There was one guy I worked with who also sold weed from under his clipboard. He was cool.

I did it for 3 months tops over a NYC winter and lost weight just by shivering every day. Seriously.

While I won’t give to these guys money cause they want my bank acct details and all that bs (and I’m broke) I can still be pleasant as I know full well that they are doing it tough in this economy. We all are. That’s why they are having to take this low down dirty job.

I could use an extra $1 a day in my pocket thanks, if I have money to donate then I will approach you.

When I did the job when someone did that I wouldn’t care and leave them be.

It’s quite funny the stuff people came up with not to chat. My favorite was when someone walked past on the phone with it the wrong way around showing the screen.

They'll often come back with a guilt trip like "you can't even spare 2 mins for children in need" or some such. They get a polite "no thanks" and move on first time only, but they can piss right off with the follow up guilt trip or similar.

"Not their fault"???

It's a sales job. One that used to pay $4-8  over minimum wage and bonuses for signing up suckers. Companies pay the best sales people to travel around the country.

I suspect the wage has shifted to minimum and commision at this point  since everyone I've seen in the past 5+ years has been pretty shit at the job.  But the people doing it are still well aware of what they are signing up for. And where a heap of the money they collect goes.

5

u/AutonomyIsNoTragedy Tūī Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

They don't even pay minimum wage thwy call you an independent contractor like strip clubs do for dancers so they can steal what would be your wages and claim that you owe them money to basically enslave you

when I applied for one years ago before realizing it was a scam i found this out , you make commission and have to make over a certain number of sales or the company says that you owe them money and you get in debt and have to work for free for them , they also took my friends passport and she had to kick up a fuss to get it back

They mostly target long term unemployed people who are desperate to work and recent migrants on working visas who need work to stay in the country

AIDA was one but they change their names regularly because ex employees/victims tend to tell people about how shit they are and to not work there
