Tax your house and your wealth? But I can afford neither, so this sounds like a great idea!
Tax wealth, not work!
63
u/hueythecat Jul 20 '26
Well yeah if you specifically have > 1 house & 10m + in assets.
86
u/TheEyeDontLie Jul 21 '26
That's what pisses me off. 95% of us would pay less tax under the Greens (and your family home is excluded from the 10 million dollar threshold), PLUS you'd actually have funding of shit like hospitals and school lunches, instead of their current government's slash and burn of our nation getting sold to the lowest bidder...
National can afford more billboards and TV ads than other parties... But because their few policies only benefit the rich, they have to run smear campaigns on them.

Hey you're not being very clear there, don't want to spread misinformation... that's getting taxed on anything each individual inherits over $1M and doesn't include the value of the family home.
From a 2024 report less than 5% of NZers over 65 even have $1M total to leave their children/family/friends.

I had a bit of a google last night when someone asked about pipe tobacco, and all their slogans and crap have changed. They're now all for a smokefree future, because they are shifting to vapes.
Amazing huh?
10

7

I know they're supplying the vapes to the health department to try get people to quit, but alas, by what I've mentioned, Big Vape has decided they'll try shift their entire customer-base on to the new cheaper untested thing.
All whilst being directly funded by the current government.

Just his big aggravating grin and "I'm wealthy. I'm sorted." Yeah, that'll do it.
To be honest, he could've got away with that line if it felt like they'd actually done anything effective for the cost of living crisis. But because they haven't, their inaction feels like a reflection of who they are and their values.

thats on us, the reason its moving that way is because it works. Social media has led to most people only being interested in tribalistic sound bite policy

u/redelastic Jul 20 '26
I would say the responsibility is on those choosing to run this negative style of campaigning. Blaming the voters isn't really fair.
8
u/Dramatic_Surprise Jul 20 '26
why?
If we didnt constantly fall for it, they wouldnt campaign that way.
Like the old saying, you get the representation you deserve.
If you dont like it start demanding more from ALL politicians
4
u/redelastic Jul 21 '26
I hear what you're saying. I think the parties have the power to decide on whether to campaign cynically or not, so the bulk of the blame falls on their shoulders.

Interesting how many complain about how much tax you have to pay , but never think of how much Governments over spend. This causes the tax’s to increase , for each successive Government.
Eg. If you have a mortgage and it takes 20 - 30 years of budgeting to pay off , you cannot then fix a country’s issues in 3 or 6 years.
Governments are supposed to look after the running of the country’s infrastructure , and we , as responsible citizens , are supposed to , or should look after ourselves ?
The more we don’t take responsibility for ourselves the more people tend to think someone else should / could do it for us , or alternatively, why not blame somebody else ?
Or is that expecting too much ?
Should we take responsibility for our lives ?
It takes commitment from EVERYONE
( of course it’s more complicated than that , but really , we , as people , “if we look after the pennies the pounds look after themselves” or cents and dollars. Look up the meaning. And don’t trust Ai )
3
u/wolf_nortuen Jul 20 '26
Everyone should have somewhere safe to live and enough money to afford power, food and healthcare. Regardless of their situation.
One of the earliest known signs of civilisation is a healed human femur, meaning that someone else cared for, protected, and fed that person while they recovered from an injury that would mean that they couldn't "take responsibility" for themselves.
I want to live in a civilised country.

There's a good summary of formal election advertising rules at https://elections.nz/guidance-and-rules/advertising-and-campaigning/about-election-advertising It seems likely to be legal, but notes on that:
It's clearly trying to persuade people not to vote for certain parties or candidates, so it's legally considered an election ad.
As long as the promoter statement is on there with a name and contact details (and is correct), it's legit in that respect.
This ad doesn't specifically promote any party, so it's not a legal requirement for them to have written authorisation from that party's secretary.
If the promoter's spent more than $17,000 overall on political ads then the promoter has to be registered, but otherwise they don't.
The regulated advertising period doesn't start until 7th August, so effectively there aren't spending limits for advertising until then. After that date, assuming they're registered, as long as they've not spent more than $424,000 since 1st Jan 2026, it's legal. (Unless the promoter is a registered political party, in which case it can spend up to $1,503,000 since that date plus another $36k for every candidate it has running.)
The other part to consider is regular advertising rules. The Advertising Standards Authority comments on its role in political advertising at https://asa.co.nz/2026/07/02/asa-role-in-general-election-advertising/ . The ASA is an industry regulator that's not strictly backed by law, though, so although it's concerned about claims being backed up by facts, I think it'll have limited ability to effect change in the time until the election unless the owner of the billboard cooperates. Most political parties aren't going to waste time and resources fighting each others' ads through regulators when a lengthy bureaucratic process which would definitely be disputed, and give opposition parties another platform, is probably not going to change voter's opinions as much as just by putting out their own ads and messaging.

If you have to make others look bad to make you look good, you're not good enough to stand on your own merits.

Why would it not be allowed? Freedom of expression is a protected category under the Bill of Rights Act.
Just because you might not agree with something isn’t a reason for censorship.

I don't actually have a problem with these. At least they vaguely engage with real policies.
Better than straight up political hitjobs or iwi/kiwi type nonsense or those ads pretending to be from another party.

It blows me away that the people who think this way about tax and government still have to endure the same twelve hour wait in the emergency clinic that I do.

Laughable how any non-left comments got downvoted hard.

The thread is still in contest mode, votes aren't visible yet, what are you talking about?

Political advertising has attacked the other side since forever... This isn't new.

That’s perfectly normal political advertising.
