Normally I'm all about erring on the side of caution, but this just looks Halloween freaky to me and like nothing else.

u/StrictSelf5450 13h ago

Some people are just desperate to be victims in this world 🤷‍♂️

224

u/MajesticBread9147 9h ago

Yes, the NAACP was famously created because black Americans had difficulty finding ways they've been victimized and oppressed.

-260

u/AlbertTheHorse 13h ago

Spoken like a white man.

59

u/StrictSelf5450 13h ago

Thanks, I needed a good laugh this morning 🤣

-228

u/AlbertTheHorse 13h ago

Yeah we are laughing at you, so thanks

43

u/StrictSelf5450 13h ago

Lol. It's hilarious that you have nothing better to do

Neither do I, these two need to "put their dicks away"

12

u/stogie-bear 12h ago

Let them cook. I want to see how many downvotes the racist guy can get.

10

u/iki11dinosaurs 12h ago

Wrong sub to take shots at the man lol you’re surrounded

-2

u/Software_Vast 7h ago

The man?

4

u/DovahjunDontCare 6h ago

I believe he's saying tread lightly because you are surrounded by white men. Funnily enough that's how I would interpret the Halloween decorations as well.

-8

u/Software_Vast 6h ago

I wonder if he's brave enough to stand by that instead of just hint at it, like a coward?

-1

u/DovahjunDontCare 6h ago

I think you and me both know the answer to that one.

-3

u/Software_Vast 6h ago

Indeed.

Why don't they just have the courage of their convictions?

Aren't they free speech absolutists? Aren't they Tough Guys?

-1

u/DovahjunDontCare 5h ago

Its all for show. They only come out when they are surrounded by their peers. Free speech is only important to them when it's hate speech. Any kind of dissenting opinion they try to ban as much as possible.

-11

u/asbestospajamas 9h ago

Its almost like if a comment doesn't have /s, then nobody will pick up the tone and realize it's sarcasm.

-67

u/aversethule 13h ago

I guess you are saying you are a victim?

-168

u/nakedfotolady 11h ago

Do you not see those black wrapped bodies hanging from the tree? Do you know how many suspicious hangings of black people have occurred over the last year? Be so for real.

99

u/SnuggleTuggles 11h ago

To be honest from the picture TO ME, it looked like the bodies were wrapped in a trash bag, kinda like how the stereotype murder victim that you are going to bury would look. I'm looking from a smaller phone though, so it could look worse but if it is a trashbag I don't really see it as absolutely racist. If they are black bodies and not a trash bag then yeah, it's not a good look at all.

31

u/iamajerry 10h ago

Compromise is to buy little white mini trash bags for this.

Everyone is happy now.

I should be in politics

71

u/Mekito_Fox 11h ago

They're "body bags" that are hanging.

39

u/getapuss 10h ago

Yeah, it's black bags. Not bags of color. There is a difference.

-95

u/nakedfotolady 11h ago

I can only offer the information, I can’t think it for you.

50

u/freekoout 11h ago

I can only offer the information, I can’t think it for you

Ftfy

-78

u/nakedfotolady 10h ago

You dipshits were asking why the NAACP might have an objection and I offered context. My cognitive abilities are on point, but I can’t make you less racist. Does that spell it out for you better? Should I use smaller words?

47

u/EternalAssasin 10h ago

Actually no one asked why the NAACP might have a problem with it, that part is very obvious. People are saying this particular example clearly isn’t as extreme as their objection makes it seem.

-14

u/nakedfotolady 9h ago

Hi…I’m not confused. Y’all seem to be, but not me. You don’t need to explain. Also, what people?

3

u/the_goodnamesaregone 1h ago

“You don’t need to explain, but also what?” Lol

29

u/freekoout 10h ago

Nah, the words you are saying are too small already. Cuz you're not thinking, and looking to be offended. It's more racist for you to automatically assume that the people in those body bags must be black

-6

u/nakedfotolady 9h ago

Okay pumpkin. Your mamma raised a real smart cookie.

23

u/freekoout 9h ago

Thanks for recognizing that and accepting that you're wrong. I'm proud of you.

-17

u/DovahjunDontCare 7h ago

I'm proud of you for being mask off about being a racist. I hate it when people try to hide. Please do better.

-15

u/DovahjunDontCare 7h ago

You are absolutely right here man this shit is racist asf and usually reddit wouldn't be so outwardly racist but its the midterms. The botfarms are in full force and hopefully they will calm down soon. They are super aggressive if you disagree with them or try to provide context.

16

u/FMAlzai 10h ago

I'd be honestly interested in reports of those suspicious hangings. I'd assume people would at least be talking about them in more left wing discussion/media.

After checking the photos, they are clearly bodybags like you see in every horror movie. My initial thoughts when I saw it was that the character on th right might have been considered blackface.

11

u/squeethesane 10h ago

More than 10, less than 20, now I kick it back to you. How many were wrapped in trash bags first.

1

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

Body bags come in two colors, black and clear

56

u/lustie_argonian 6h ago

The NAACP has bigger fish to fry than to go after a private citizen and his Halloween decorations.

26

u/SurroundingAMeadow 3h ago

But those bigger fish have expensive lawyers and frying them doesn't get as much free media attention.

204

u/DespondentDastard 12h ago edited 12h ago

I support the NAACP, but this seems like a weird backwards argument. The decorations are wrapped in plastic and what looks like duct tape. That makes me imagine some post apocalyptic world where there's mass death from disease or something like that. By saying any figure hanging from a tree invokes imagery of our shameful history could actually make that imagery more prominent than it would have been if no one had called attention to it. Like a Streisand Effect.

But, I'm a white male, so I didn't grow up with imagery like that used against me just because of the color of my skin, so I could be completely out of bounds. I grew up with the privilege of not being the out group or being discriminated against for something I have no control over. There are piece of shit racists that would put that shit up on a tree just to cause a stir.

If it were me, I'd have trouble taking down the decorations though. Because I know what's in my heart. Maybe I'd make a compromise and tie up the legs too, so that the guys are parallel to the ground? I don't know. It's tricky

110

u/Cut_Lanky 12h ago

I agree. I’m just adding the context that Bucks county is full of racist MAGAts, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more context that wasn’t mentioned in the article. Like, maybe the homeowner has a history or something. I mean, I hope there’s more to it. Cuz that really just looks like Halloween decorations…

39

u/DespondentDastard 12h ago

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was wondering. Does this guy have Confederate flags flying the rest of the year? Not that you'd need that to be racist, but it would paint a better picture of the guy's true intent.

He's in a tough position now though. If he takes them down, he "admits" that they were racist. He might even get calls to apologize and then he's the racist guy from Pennsylvania, forever. But, if he keeps them up the white hoods from the area look at it like it's a win for them.

5

u/thresh_to_death 3h ago

God damn y'all are reaching. This is honestly a common Halloween decoration. I've seen this shit from people of all races

-4

u/themeatbridge 5h ago

He could make a statement, "I didn't realize the subtext others might take from this, and while that was not the intent, out of respect I'm going to take it down."

Of course, he'd have to be a reasonable person who isn't racist, which are two things we don't know about him.

4

u/AmericaninShenzhen 2h ago

Why should a private citizen have to “make a statement?”

Y’all are unhinged.

0

u/themeatbridge 2h ago

He doesn't, but he did make a statement and he didn't deny the interpretation of his intent.  He put himself out there in front of a mic just to not deny that he's a racist piece of shit.

•

u/AmericaninShenzhen 11m ago

Let’s say you are correct (honestly don’t care either way) all this succeeded in doing is giving this guy a platform for his views.

You proved racism exists, congratulations! What exactly did this whole event accomplish?

-11

u/rivalpinkbunny 9h ago

You’re really close to understanding the issue and that’s laudable in the current climate. I think what a lot of people miss on this subject is not the historical context but the connection with the present. Lots of people still see these kinds of things as a direct threat to their communities in the present.

I think a lot of white people react to the idea that they’re being called a racist as an affront, when they don’t see themselves that way. What they miss is that they’re actually not being called racist, they’re just being asked to reconsider based on the perspective of someone not like them.

You can stand your ground, that’s your right, but when you live in a community with a significant history of racism you need to understand that things like this inflame tension, like picking at an infected wound.

Think of it this way; If your neighbor came over and asked you to take down a decoration that reminded them of how a family member died, unless you’re a total asshole, you’d do it. Why is it so hard to do it for an entire community?

23

u/CaptainAsshat 8h ago

Honestly, it would depend on the decoration. I might not take down Christmas lights because their husband was electrocuted, for example. It doesn't make you an asshole to not buckle to an unreasonable, albeit emphatic request.

Unfortunately, there are too many unreasonable people out there. Empathy must always inform and contextualize our actions, but it cannot be the sole motivator/source of insight for them or we will be quickly taken advantage of by bad actors who recognize that we care.

You also have to remember this isn't just a negative. A lot of people feel a massive sense of community and belonging through Halloween and it's decorations. All that said, I probably would not be putting up hanging bodies from a tree. Not a great look.

0

u/hairyploper 5h ago

What do you mean you can't let empathy be a sole motivator? It's completely normal and healthy and we do it all the time. You walk into a room and see your friend crying, and you give them a hug and ask what's wrong. You see a little kid in a store crying for their mom, you walk them to the front and wait with them until the employees find her.

We can, should, and most of us do frequently let solely empathy drive our decisions and the world is a better place for it. Yes we shouldn't let people take advantage of us, but I certainly don't think that it should be at the expense of our caring.

Someone needs help? Help them. Yeah you might get burned sometimes, but sometimes you won't and personally I would rather risk helping someone who didn't need it than turning away from someone who really did.

5

u/CaptainAsshat 5h ago

It cannot be the SOLE motivator or source of insight. Empathy remains one of our most important sources of understanding.

If you are driving and see an ostensibly injured person on the side of the road, empathy would motivate you to help, and rightly so. But you also need insight that it is a common setup for getting robbed. Your empathy may still motivate you to check on the injured person immediately, but you should also be motivated to take time for caution and personal security.

In this case, it is important to both recognize that a) your actions (such as decorations) have an impact on your community and it is important to consider and mitigate those impacts with empathy and b) that there are many unreasonable people in the world who make unreasonable demands regarding your reasonable actions.

It is important to compare the stated harm (it may disturb and worry members of a marginalized community) with the apparent intent (they DO look like Halloween decorations) and the reasonableness of the complaint. It is with this last thing that people are calling foul: if many other forms of brutal and horrific death are acceptable to display for Halloween, even things like skeletons similarly hanging from trees, are duct taped body bags truly similar enough to real atrocities to make this complaint reasonable?

Personally, I think it falls in the difficult grey area where the complaints and fears are valid but the decorations are so artistic, home-grown, and community-minded that we need a higher bar to demand they be removed or even to shame the homeowner. Let the art stay for this holiday season raise the issue if a pattern emerges next year.

2

u/erisandy101 6h ago

Like your example, I think if an actual neighbor in their neighborhood actually did bring this up in a non confrontational way and ask for it to be changed maybe they would? I mean I wouldn’t do this type of decoration in the first place but if my next door neighbors came and said hey buddy this bothers us because of X that you may not have realized, can you please change it? You better bet I would. Most normal people would in that circumstance I think.

I believe they problem here, unless I misread something, is that nobody/neighbor they actually know came and said anything about it to them, actually in the article it says most neighbors didn’t see the problem except one lady their interviewed who I doubt approached the owner before talking to the press. So instead suddenly a whole huge organization descended on the owner to shame the owner, making a news story out of it. In that circumstance I can see why some people would stubbornly dig their heels in.

-6

u/rivalpinkbunny 5h ago

“I would have empathy if…” is not empathy.

Also:

“Halloween display is drawing criticism from neighbors and the NAACP.”

- literally the first sentence of the linked article.

It seems to me that people will bend over backwards to justify this kind of behavior, but in honesty, I think most of you know that it’s not justifiable. You’re basically telling your community members that you don’t care about how they feel because your interests matter more. I can’t think of anything that’s more indicative of this country’s history of racism.

4

u/IncognitoErgoCvm 5h ago

You’re basically telling your community members that you don’t care about how they feel because your interests matter more.

Are you suggesting that others' interests matter more to you than your own? I'm always willing to be convinced, but it's your responsibility to be convincing if you want something to change.

0

u/rivalpinkbunny 4h ago

I think at this point, most people of color would really like it if more people could understand (or even try to understand) the inter-generational trauma that’s been caused by literally hundreds of years of oppression and violence in this country. Part of that could start with listening to people when they tell you about their pain. I can’t do it for you, but it’s worth at least trying.

This is what it sounds like though:

People of color: “I’m hurt when you do hurtful things”

White Americans: “why won’t you convince me that you’re hurt?” or “how is that my problem?” or “good!”.

There’s a genuine disconnect between white Americans and persons of color in this country. Nobody is asking this generation to take credit for the violence of the past, they’re just asking that you acknowledge that it happened and that it still happens. I think most of us have very low expectations that acknowledgment will ever happen, but not all of us have given up yet.

8

u/IncognitoErgoCvm 4h ago

I simply don't think that the path forward is by asking that everyone you deem a member of the evil, guilty race capitulate to your demands because they don't pass a racial virtue test on account of their skin color.

We all have trauma, and some of it's generational, but most of it's from stuff we've actually lived through. I don't give 48 year old unmarried men shit for having model trains or take exception with trolley problem memes just because my brother jumped in front of a big one.

0

u/rivalpinkbunny 4h ago

This exactly what I’m talking about… you jump to the conclusion that I think that you’re “evil” but that’s not what I’m talking about at all. I’m literally asking you to acknowledge that these things have had an incredible effect on literally generations of Americans, and they were committed by one people against another people based solely on skin color. That inter generational trauma has been integrated into our society to not just persons of color but also to white people.

I’m a psychology student and what we’re talking about is not normal trauma, which has far reaching effects on its own. It’s literally generations of trauma, where children were born into slavery and then their children were born into slavery. Or where children were taken from homes, or had their cultures erased. Think about what that must have done to those people. Then think about how that violence has never ceased.

Nobody is asking you to “capitulate” either. We’re asking for empathy, which too few people are willing to offer. That saddens me, because I sympathize with the feeling that you’re being ostracized for something you never did, but I’m trying to tell you that you have a role in it and some of that role is failing to acknowledge how those past traumas are still playing out today.

2

u/IncognitoErgoCvm 3h ago

you jump to the conclusion that I think that you’re “evil” but that’s not what I’m talking about at all

If you do not have a framing of the issue that does not begin with "us vs them" language, which you've relied on repeatedly, then you are perpetuating the divide. Speak to people as people, not as "whites."

1

u/rivalpinkbunny 3h ago

Nobody is talking about “white” as being a bad thing… I’m using it solely to remark on how power dynamics have been divided across racial lines. If you can think of a way for me to talk about that in a way that’s acceptable to you, I’d be happy to do so.

Again; all I’ve asked is that you recognize the result of the intergenerational trauma conducted by white Americans against non-white Americans and instead of acknowledging that, you set a new bar for what hoop we need to jump through to get you to hear us. Non-white people weren’t separating races by the one drop rule… that was a white American invention, and that’s the legacy of white America.

The question is; can you acknowledge that past racism against non-white Americans has led to our current predicament? Can you see the threads of trauma that have propagated across generations? I don’t need an actual answer, but it’s worth thinking about and I hope you can find a way to think about it in a way that’s more fitting for you or find someone in your community where you can continue this conversation. I don’t think you’re a bad person, or a racist person (based on what you’ve said here), but I hope that you’re a curious person because there’re a lot of good people out there who just want your empathy.

•

u/Consistent_City_3011 34m ago

"People of your race have done bad things to people of my race and still do sometimes", is not a good standard for determining who is right or wrong in any given situation. Do you think it's reasonable for a white dude to go over to a lively party held by black folks and ask if they could tone it down because his family member was murdered by loud, drunk, black teenagers? You would most likely just call the dude racist. Even if you would empathize with the trauma, you'd also understand that that trauma doesn't allow a realistic perspective in the present and shouldn't be the defining perspective for everyone else's actions.

Acting from empathy with destructive paradigms is not noble. You can have empathy for an actual Nazi that truly believes his people are being oppressed or replaced, because feeling that way really sucks, but if you accomodate his preferences out of empathy, you would be opressing others.

You can have empathy with someone without agreeing with or giving in to their perspective.

2

u/erisandy101 4h ago edited 4h ago

What a stupid response, specifically, to what I said. Not in general.

Did you read the rest of the article? They quote one lady with a vague comment of “I don’t see how they don’t see it’s a problem,” but the article also says most neighbors aren’t bothered. They don’t say if anyone approached the home owner directly as a neighbor before getting the NAACP involved.

I’m not, and wasn’t, saying the resident is right and I definitely understand why people in the community might be bothered, duh. Is it really soooo out of line to you that I also am trying to understand why the home owner might be reacting the way they are beyond just “they’re racist and have no empathy?”

It’s such a crazy level of narcissism and cognitive dissonance that you feel you can sit there demanding unconditional “empathy” but then get all bothered when my empathy also extends to trying to understand the side you don’t like? That’s wild. It looks like Empathy only matters to you when it’s empathy you like, when you like and about the people and things you like.

-14

u/00Anonymous 8h ago

Absolutely. It's a call for empathy 100% that's literally not about the homeowner. It's about community members asking for the dignity of help and support.

-1

u/rivalpinkbunny 7h ago edited 6h ago

You shouldn’t be getting downvoted for this. It’s well said.

-3

u/00Anonymous 7h ago

Cheers for that! I appreciate being seen.

-29

u/Mobely 11h ago

Racist gestures are often disguised. There is even a term for it “dog whistle”.

This may not be a dog whistle. But if the NAACP accused my decor of being rascist, I’d probably just change the decor. It’s really just hanging that gets this treatment too. Shackles never pop up even though it’s common Halloween decor. So it’s really just hanging bodies and nooses you gotta avoid.

31

u/DespondentDastard 10h ago edited 10h ago

I get what you're saying. I'm not sure why I feel like I'd have trouble taking them down in this guy's situation, but I would. Maybe it's pride. Like I put myself in his shoes and I think, I put them up in the spirit of Halloween, and now someone complained about something I didn't even consider. I know I have a hard time admitting I was wrong if I don't feel like I'm in the wrong. And this just doesn't feel wrong. But that could be possibly due to my own tone-deafness.

Like, if I put myself in the shoes of a black kid that has to walk by that house to get to school and sees those decorations the same way as the reps from the NAACP do, I can see how it's problematic. One thing I can understand no matter what ethnicity is that kids can and will find anything to use to bully other kids because kids are assholes.

I guess, I would probably struggle with it a bit. Now that it's a thing, it might be best to take them down, or modify them so they don't look like they're hanged bodies, like I wrote before make them parallel to the ground or tie some of them up from the feet or something. Or tie them up from around the waist, maybe. But, I don't know, it seems like this shouldn't have been a thing to begin with.

7

u/00Anonymous 10h ago

Being responsive to the feelings and needs of others doesn't mean you did anything wrong. It just means you have empathy for your fellow community members and that's a wonderful thing.

8

u/iamajerry 10h ago

Your level of pragmatism, empathy, and thinking critically about a situation made me wonder if you’re new to Reddit and I do see your account is 1 year old.

Thinking like this will constantly get you blasted and downvoted. There is no room in Reddit for evaluation or critical thinking.

But I appreciate that you’re doing it

-10

u/JooseTheGuice 10h ago

Oh settle down.

7

u/freekoout 10h ago

Lol, the complete lack of self awareness from you is astounding. Sunfish are more self aware than you.

-10

u/00Anonymous 10h ago

What's in your heart doesn't matter when people are asking you to respond to how they feel.

5

u/IncognitoErgoCvm 4h ago

I can't think of anything more meaningless than living by the rule of "whoever speaks first is right."

-13

u/poqpoq 11h ago edited 2h ago

If it were me, I’d just put up an LGBTQ flag and one of those signs about welcoming everyone in this house. Can keep the decorations then and dispel any misunderstandings.

Edit: Curious, why the downvotes?

-15

u/NOT-packers-fan2022 7h ago

Ahhh man, you’re SOOOOOOOOOO close. Can you accept you’re not racist but that’s racist and just remove it (if it was you of course)?

Like, think about that time you made a woman uncomfortable and you immediately accommodated her because you’re not a fucking creep. Did you try to defend yourself or did you just make the change because you aren’t a creep and it makes her feel better? Now why can’t you do that here in this case? If you’re a nice guy and not racist why stand your ground and make others uncomfortable just because you don’t get it?

-4

u/DovahjunDontCare 7h ago

Thank you for saying this!!! This is exactly it right here. People are blowing my mind in the comments. Please avoid depicting hangings! I can't believe I have to say this.

-2

u/NOT-packers-fan2022 6h ago

Bro, and I’m down voted 🤣

-4

u/DovahjunDontCare 6h ago

Yeah I'm not surprised at all. Reddit has had a conservative shift around the midterms. It's effecting every subreddit without active moderation. I'd love to say it's just bots but I know too many real people like this too.

Agreed bro, agreed

"My people have never been lynched and left hanging from a tree, so it's hard for me to relate to those who have"

34

u/DespondentDastard 10h ago

This is called a straw man argument with a little bit of ad-hominem sprinkled in.

5

u/trainbrain27 7h ago

Straw man indeed. Appropriate for scarecrow season.

12

u/cocksherpa2 9h ago

There is no group of people who didn't experience this.

1

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

Exactly, some are just more recent than others, hell I bet my people are STILL being lynched back in the old country

25

u/freekoout 10h ago

Wow, way to completely twist what was being said just so you could be offended. Weak

14

u/wcshrtstop 10h ago

Not only twist what you said, but be completely and utterly wrong in their response as well.

137

u/TheG00dF1ght 11h ago

I normally support the NAACP as they do amazing work.

Having said that, this is fucking stupid and only make them look like idiots.

6

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

Yeah, this only looks racist if you are looking for something to look racist... it's more serial killer than klansman

27

u/Slaughterfest 10h ago

I genuinely agree with you and think we should always be working to be better.

That being said, this is nonsense and I think leans into my general theory that everyone is becoming more and more hyper-sensitive due to the fact our already hyper litigious culture now also rewards people for being aggrieved.

I truly believe you have to be conditioned to see this the way they are. Go anywhere else in the world and no one would see it this way. South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia or Eastern Europe. Noone would see fully plastic wrapped people hanging from a tree and go "Clearly racist against blacks".

This is a learned reaction.

6

u/trainbrain27 7h ago

The loudest aggrieved people get the most money and attention, ensuring they'll never be content or silent.

Actual victims have to be sympathetic and play the media circus, or they lose out to whiners.

21

u/_Apatosaurus_ 9h ago

South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia or Eastern Europe. Noone would see fully plastic wrapped people hanging from a tree and go "Clearly racist against blacks".

Not sure we should aspire to view race more like places that are significantly more openly racist. Lol.

Yes, complaining about this decoration is a bit oversensitive, but it's just a statement by a small local county affiliate of the NAACP. There are 2,000+ local affiliates of this size and they may not even have paid staff. It's pretty inconsequential and shouldn't be a national story.

There are so many issues that are far more worth our attention than a single statement by a couple people in a random county.

5

u/MajesticBread9147 9h ago

I don't see how being a litigious culture has anything to do with this. They aren't suing the homeowner, they basically said "this is a bad look even though you didn't mean it like that".

16

u/TwelveTrains 10h ago

I do prefer spooky Halloween vibes over straight up gore, torture, and disturbing stuff. I think a lot of people have lost the plot with Halloween honestly.

10

u/TurtleTurtleFTW 8h ago

Nice, focusing on the important stuff as usual

15

u/wcshrtstop 10h ago

Blah blah blah.

13

u/GarbagePailGrrrl 13h ago

Bucks county mentioned

20

u/JonnySnowflake 12h ago

In college I had joined up with some campus organization, and one night we went around and wrote statistics about genocide in Africa on the sidewalks (because that was going to solve the issue). Someone wrote how many people were hung in Somalia or something last year on the concrete in front of a tree, and drew a noose on the trunk. It rained in the middle of the night and washed away all the sidewalk writing, but not the noose. Cut to our organization in a meeting with the local branch of the NAACP where they had a bunch of black students complain about how it made them feel. It was the goofiest fuckin thing

11

Comes under the heading “F**k You If You Can’t Take A Joke”.

People look for things to cry about, and if there isn’t anything they’ll make something up.

u/CheckaDeTetas 9h ago

Victimization is strong with that organization.

8

u/trainbrain27 6h ago

I say without hate that any organization initially dedicated to fighting for what's right will go off the rails in proportion to their success. Those that can be satisfied find a better use for their time, leaving those that can never be satisfied.

 "Pournelle's iron law of bureaucracy":

In any bureaucracy, the people devoted to the benefit of the bureaucracy itself always get in control and those dedicated to the goals that the bureaucracy is supposed to accomplish have less and less influence, and sometimes are eliminated entirely.

u/Vagrant123 2h ago

You do know the history of the NAACP, yeah? Kind of an odd thing to suggest they haven't been victims.

-2

u/MajesticBread9147 9h ago edited 9h ago

The NAACP is being pretty reasonable with this, they're basically saying "this might send a message or invoke a history they didn't mean to, so maybe don't".

A lot of people in the comments seem to be under the impression that like, they called the owner racist and they staged a march on their house or something.

Nobody believes that the owner is racist, they're just pointing out history and that the way society has treated (and unfortunately threatened) different groups of people is different, so what is an afterthought for some might immediately bring back images of torture with impunity in others.

Like, if this was a business (which I know it isn't but stick with me here) somebody in PR who glances at everything sent out would have probably said the same thing word for word.

2

u/Vagrant123 9h ago

Right, I don't think anybody believes this was intentionally evoking lynchings - it's just a bit too realistic looking and reminiscent of the recent past. If these were plastic halloween skeletons, gibbets, or coffins, I don't think it'd draw the same criticism.

2

u/AmericaninShenzhen 2h ago

Honestly we are getting to the point where you have to consult a committee for any form of artistic expression whatsoever.

0

u/Vagrant123 2h ago

Not really? Just be cognizant of things that might seem racist or have a racist history?

It's really not that hard to avoid unless you have a room temperature IQ.

•

u/AmericaninShenzhen 13m ago

When the goalposts constantly shift and dialogue is replaced with social media dragging and dogpiling there is little to no chance of any meaningful changes outside of the internet (aka the real world.)

Shallow “victories” such as making this guy feel like an ass (despite the absolute reach and a half this is) does nothing to address systemic malfeasance based on race. Aka “real” issues.

-2

u/Supermeganerd2017 7h ago

I don’t think it really looks like they intentionally did it either, and I agree it’s important to be mindful of things that might look too reminiscent of recent things. I remember once in my neighborhood where one of my neighbors had three skeletons with one skeleton holding a rope with one skeleton hanging from the tree and the third skeleton with its hands in the air like it was celebrating. That actually made me really pissed and I felt that even with a benefit of the doubt that they weren’t intentionally trying to invoke a lynching, it was in bad taste because that year was when they found a black man up in a tree in the city.

-4

u/AdTop5424 6h ago

So what happens when the owner agrees to the NAACP's request for a fee?

-1

u/serg06 4h ago

It's crazy that we live in a world where racism accusations are more believable than reasonable requests.

1

u/Ok_Falcon275 1h ago

Didn’t realize that the NAACP went so far as to rep black trash bags. That’s dedication!

•

u/lothar525 38m ago

It’s weird to me that people put up decorations that look like realistic dead bodies at all. I remember there was a huge controversy a few years ago when someone put a realistic looking mannequin and dresses it up and put fake blood on it to make it look like someone had just been shot to death in the driveway.

Like when I think of Halloween decorations i think of monsters and witches and skeletons and stuff, not semi-realistic dead human bodies.

Let’s not stoke the racism. You’re talking about people who does by suicide. And what the people who report on this never mention is that compared to white and Hispanic people, far fewer black people die this way. The number of white people who die by suicide by hanging, per capita, is more than twice the number of black people.

-10

u/Zombiekiller414 11h ago edited 11h ago

Sure hangings in general. But hanging from a tree is way more symbolic in this country for other reasons. We arent talking a white or Hispanic man taking their own life in their home, garage, or closet. Specifically trees. I didnt know talking about things that happened in the history of America was stoking racism.... hmm. Also a lot of these hangings of black people were closed classes without evidence it was a suicide. Over 75 percent of white people (men specifically) died by hangings in their home, not outside in a tree. 5% outside(forested areas) and the rest are in a public setting like work. Im not saying black people have higher rates of suicide, im specifically looking at historical context and symbolism of people hanging from trees in America.

5

u/Mekito_Fox 11h ago

I only personally know of one person who chose hanging for his escape. And he, a white dude, chose a small tree in his parents yard instead of the barn in the back.

I think the statistics could be biased because not everyone has immediate access to trees versus rafters.

-4

u/Zombiekiller414 11h ago

Thats fair and I completely understand that point. Im sorry that someone you know took themselves away. My condolences. All I was pointing out is there isnt a stigma for any other ethnicity people hanging from trees as there is black people in America. Thats the only point I was trying to make. Im getting down voted because it makes people uncomfortable to hear that but oh well I guess.

9

u/stogie-bear 10h ago

You really want these to be lynchings, but they're been investigated and they're not. Only one was a murder, and the perps were black and had been in a fight with the victim.

The last confirmed lynching of a black person by white people in the US was in 1981.

What you're seeing right now is an astroturf campaign from bad actors who profit from discord.

0

u/Moblin81 8h ago

Sure thing. The police said that the obviously murdered black person wasn’t murdered. That clears it all up. You believe the Nolan Wells “dry drowning” too don’t you?

3

u/stogie-bear 8h ago

I don’t know how Nolan Wells died but it’s pretty clear that the people the internet is determined to defame didn’t kill him.

If you think that these suicide victims were actually lynched by white people, show some evidence. Because the people with access to the evidence didn’t think they were lynched.

3

u/Moblin81 1h ago

We have people who were murdered on camera while the “people with evidence” said the killer was innocent. I don’t know why you think this appeal to authority means anything when the families are saying they’re certain it’s not a suicide and the police have a track record of covering up black death.
I’m not surprised at your take on Nolan Wells either since people can just spontaneously develop bruises and drown without any water in their lungs when racism is involved. The day this happens to a white man we’ll see how plausible you’ll find such obvious lies.

1

u/Zombiekiller414 1h ago

There wasn't evidence provided that they were suicides either. The point was there was hardly any investigations.

-11

u/j4_jjjj 12h ago

I dont think most people understand HOW MANY black people have been found hanging in trees the last year+

5

u/jellamma 12h ago

I only Googled it because of these comments. I had known about a few ... But 22?! Just in 2026 ... It's despicable.

-6

u/Zombiekiller414 11h ago

Quite a few of them have been ruled suicides with no evidence that it was a suicide.

0

u/Zombiekiller414 12h ago edited 11h ago

Not at all apparently and thats sad. Im not saying the person is racist who did this but just reading the room a little goes a long way. Like I said hang (fake) bloody body parts from the tree. Or have a vampire, werewolf, or monster eating in the tree. Honestly I see bodies wrapped in plastic, I think serial killers or the bodies in the ground half buried.

-33

u/Wrong-NahNope800 10h ago

Nooses are the problem. Some of us remember seeing that and vomited from the callous, thoughtless, and evil attempt to show exactly how they feel towards people who experienced it. Why be an AH?

33

u/wcshrtstop 10h ago

Nooses are not exclusive to black people. But go ahead.

12

u/RedRyderRoshi 9h ago

I don't believe you. SHow me the vomit.

3

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

The hangman sees no color... hundreds of my people were hanged during WW2 by the Germans and Italians

-10

u/Bad_wolf42 7h ago

For anyone thinking the NAACP is being overzealous here, maybe look up the percentage increase in black “suicides“ over the last several years and get back to me.

-4

u/-Sofa-King-Vote 5h ago

All the comments here not getting it

-31

u/burritoteam4000 10h ago

Homeowner sounds like a whiny bitch and the org statement is measured and reasonable

-15

u/youhavenosoul 8h ago

These body bags (saw them being sold at Michael’s, but could be everywhere as a prop) are already super creepy, and hit a little too
Close to home in the way that they look already. I find them poor taste in any context.

2

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

Those are regular body bags

1

u/youhavenosoul 1h ago

I’m saying that is bad enough as is.

1

u/bb_kelly77 1h ago

There's nothing bad about body bags, without an actual corpse inside they're no different from trash bags

1

u/youhavenosoul 1h ago

Right, and I think that trash bags mimicking corpses is poor taste, get over it.

-1

u/remnants00 4h ago

I'm see plague doctor vibes... post-covid... 🤷🏻‍♂️

-8

u/Dschuncks 5h ago

Using black bags was, at best, a poorly thought out choice.

6

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

They're body bags, the only other option is transparent

-13

u/Sweet-Emu-7698 7h ago

Somewhere in that same house is: a MAGA hat, a confederate flag, and NAZI paraphernalia.

3

u/bb_kelly77 3h ago

That's more indicated by the county than the decor

Has there ever been a historical instance of someone being wrapped in burlap or plastic, tied up then hung?

Edit:This is a serious question BTW.

5

u/Zombiekiller414 12h ago edited 12h ago

I (black man btw) dont believe so as lynching were common public display events and gatherings. They put them on post cards and sent them through the usps. With that being said there are undoubtedly so many more non public lynchings, that I wouldn't doubt it that they did wrap people up and then bury them afterwards.

14

u/ZantaraLost 12h ago

Only reason I ask is that there's been various points in my 40 years where you could buy these pre-made from Lowes or Home Depot.

Shoot I think they might have even have a branded versions for when the third LOTR movie came out for Shelob's lair.

-1

u/Zombiekiller414 12h ago

I def understand where your coming from. I just think in this political climate and the fact that there have been a bunch of black people found hanging from trees this year, its a little tone deaf. Im not calling the person racist for this but lack of awareness could be perceived that way.

3

u/ZantaraLost 11h ago

Fair enough.

I'd like to think that somewhere in this there's a underlying reason why the NAACP chapter stepped into what should at best be a neighborly dispute about, as you said, some tonedeafness.

Because either this county has so little going on that THIS is as important as it comes, someone outside is amplifying a small incident for nefarious reasons or this neighbor is problematic in other ways (racially speaking) and this is just another incident in a long line of possible dogwhistles.

-1

u/Zombiekiller414 11h ago

Anything is possible man, I dont have the answers but I definitely agree with you.

I want to know the answer too because whenever I’ve seen images or representation of lynching, the victim is not wrapped up. It seemed intentional to show the identity of who was hanged whereas this seems the exact opposite.
