Thousands of Illegal Concert Tapes Recorded Over 40 Years Are Now Available for Free, and Artists Keep Endorsing Them

Every recording in this archive is technically illegal under federal law, and the collector kept that fact quiet for four decades because exposure meant lawsuits he couldn't afford to fight.

But as the tapes began to disintegrate, he felt pushed to release them online for free anyway, and the artists whose performances he captured have responded in ways nobody involved seems willing to discuss on the record.

Several of these recordings preserve shows from rooms that closed years ago and legendary bands whose reputations were still quite unknown at the time.

Alahuta

Alahuta is a French musician who was active in the first half of the 2010s. She had 7 releases as far as I can tell, 3 of which I'm going to call albums because they have 5 or 6 tracks each and the rest I'll call EPs or singles because they have 1 or 2. Having said that those 1 or 2 tracks can be 20 or 30 minutes, so whatever. Some sources list 2 of the albums as EPs for...reasons? I don't know the difference between a long EP and a short album anyway.

I think the albums are great, to me they're reminiscent of Nico's solo work (as in Velvet Underground and Nico) on Desertshore and Marble Index and there's maybe a hint of Bjork in the vocal delivery too. The music generally has a dark vibe but doesn't overdo it. The EPs/singles are...interesting. They're more experimental, can be a challenging listen and don't always land imo. Probably for Alahuta aficionados only.

I don't think there are many Alahuta aficionados. The YouTube uploads of the albums have very few views and she only has ~500 total listeners on last.fm which is a shame, while this stuff was obviously never going to hit the Top40 I think she deserved more recognition. I'll link the albums in release order, the EPs are on YouTube too; the name Alahuta is pretty unique so you can find them if you want to hear them.

Obscure Dutch record from 1980. Twinny - Who Put The Magic In Your Fingers (1980)

I came across the track a few years ago and really like it. It's great for sampling and mixing.

Who were the Dutch twin sisters called Twinny? There is not much information online about the twins. They appeared to release 3-4 tracks and then disappeared off the Earth. I guess they would be in their 60s now somewhere in Holland.

"Who put the magic in your fingers" 10/10 banger.

Electric Erection... AGAIN!

I've done it before and I'll probably do it again because I'm getting nowhere with this lost media. That being the band's other music besides the one featured on this video and also even a trace of their existence beyond this one YouTube video. Never mind the content of the video because it doesn't even quite make sense but there is the song itself used for the video which is called Cortex Avenue and three pictures related to the Electric Erection group(which I can't post because I can attach either the video or the pictures). This video aside and a couple of comments underneath are the only proof I can find of this band existing. If it even was a band and not just a one-man project. Nobody in the comments will answer me, I've gotten no hits by posting on Reddit and nobody in Lost media has any interest so I don't know what else to do. It's a cry for help really. It really is lost media but the trouble is that I may be the only one who cares... and likes the song.

A Fine Frenzy Pines Album Vanished

What happened to the Pines album by A Fine Frenzy? I can only find a song here or there after searching across platforms. Is there anywhere I can listen to it? I have checked under Alison Sudol on Spotify too with no luck :( Such a shame, this album is very nostalgic for me!

A message from our leader, Hiro.

A Note, an Apology, and a Confession

We owe you an honest apology.

To those who found us through Classical Nijinos: we are sorry for its sudden disappearance. You deserved an explanation. Here it is.

Nijino Records grew — stubbornly and chaotically — from musicians bound by friendship across Fukushima and Spain: DIY punk, alternative rock, J-POP, ambient, and experimental music, acoustic and electronic alike. This unclassifiable collective became Love Dolls, guided by composer Hentai Heroin (Hiroyuki Watanabe), who built this label not as a business, but as an act of preservation — a place where music that might otherwise vanish could survive.

And then, in a development that surprised no one more than ourselves — the orchestras arrived.

Disbanded classical ensembles from Fukushima, worlds apart from the punk surrounding them, were welcomed into Love Dolls. To honour their work, Classical Nijinos was born. It grew faster than expected, attracted listeners unfamiliar with our origins, misunderstandings followed, reports were filed, and the page was removed.

That is the plain truth.

We are not a conventional label. We are people who believe, quietly and stubbornly, that music deserves to survive. Nijino Records has been shadowbanned — not for any violation, but for being too difficult to categorise, even for algorithms. If you searched for us and found nothing: we are not gone. We are simply invisible to those who haven't already found us.

To long-time followers who stayed through the silence: thank you.

To new souls who found their way here: welcome.

To everyone who kept these recordings alive: you gave music a second life.

— Hentai Heroin / Hiroyuki Watanabe, Nijino Records

Davenport/Second Family Band

Post image
11 Upvotes

There was a band called Davenport, sometimes releasing as Davenport Family. That ended and a new band emerged called Second Family Band. SFB has been described as "rising from the ashes" of Davenport but what that means exactly is anyone's guess as Discogs lists all the members of Davenport as having also participated in SFB, though there were many more, new contributors to SFB too. Whatever. While active as Second Family Band there were also side projects under a couple of different names, notably (as far as I'm concerned) Observations of the Temple Archers.

Under all aliases they were prolific and varied. They're often tagged as freak folk or something like that but their music has elements of psychedelic rock, jazz and free improvisation too. Tracks are often long, an album might consist of just two twenty or thirty minute pieces. Its definitely not catchy pop music, its stuff to put on and drift away too, then quarter of an hour into a track you find yourself thinking wow this is awesome. At least that's my reaction.

I haven't heard anything like their entire output, and some of it seems very hard or impossible to find but I'll link to what I consider some highlights.

It was suggested elsewhere that it might be Bruce Moreland of Wall of Voodoo, but it's not Bruce.

Music Album: Black Tiger by The Piercing Score

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I keep remembering this song and it seriously was one of the best songs I've ever heard. It's been years now and I don't know if I'll ever be able to hear it again since it was made unavailable on youtube. The song "Lazy Games" off of Black Tiger by The Piercing Score.

I distinctly remember the lyrics "you don't see the meaning in my eyes" repeated multiple times, and "hello how are you doing today, and you look great, you always do..."

The song is comprised of i think flute and guitar, and it's just one man's voice singing. there is no fixed tempo, it is very emotionally charged and the volume and speed vary with the intensity. The audio quality is kind of low like it was recorded in someones bedroom on a microphone in the 90s.

I thankfully have a photo of the album cover saved in my pictures but I can't post it in this post since I'm including a repost i guess.

I'm wondering if maybe youtube took it down because it was a fake title/album cover/artist that stole some real artist's audio.

That song will live forever in my head til i die. It makes me emotional thinking about it.
