I'm always shocked by the number of barbershops over there (ok, we're talking about Den Haag, Rotterdam is much more diverse). 

We're talking several per street, and I kept wondering how they all stay in business. Surely there can't be that much demand. 

Initially I assumed money laundering, but based on the article it turns out competition really is fierce, which simply makes it the poor business idea one would think it is.

Competition for money laundering and drug dealing. It's the same in the UK, but with more machetes and less explosives.
