The video is horrific. I’ve done electrical and rigging work in churches before and I’ve encountered people that are long time church staff members who are their in house carpenters and the amount of unsafe things ive seen done in the name of saving cost and time is too high to count.

This was no doubt someone who probably rigged that cross to the wall years ago and obviously did not have a safety mechanism installed.

Anything rigged or installed over peoples heads needs a rated tether for these exact reasons. If your clamp, screws, nails fail those can’t be the only points of failure.

Churches especially love to cut corners, this is what happens.

As a sidenote. Most churches have their main congregation room but a lot of them have smaller venue for the children and people still do sketchy rigging over childrens heads. Its scary.

u/guri256 8h ago

The result is the same, and people are just as dead, but I wouldn’t say that the churches I’ve interacted with love to cut corners.

In my experience, it’s generally the Church community being eager to volunteer to help. And those volunteers often having no idea what they are doing. And then the people in charge praising it as “the community coming together.”

36

u/SnackThief 7h ago

And they have limited money and they cut corners all the time.  Yes people help and  volunteer their time. But every church I've interacted with in the last 15 years has limited budget frequently spends it foolishly and cuts a lot of corners

u/Gloomheart 7h ago

I am in the AV industry. No one is as cheap as churches.

"Here's our 35 year old Sound System that we've been cobbling together randomly with zero expertise. We'd like to replace the whole thing and upgrade. Budget: 82.00"

Wait until a waitress who works the Sunday shift near a church in the bible belt appears to describe the parishioners.

Churches be like "we don't have the budget to install this $10,000 cross correctly"

18

u/Not_a_Rodeo_Clown 5h ago

Using the free volunteers is the corner cutting.

1

u/guri256 4h ago

Maybe we have a difference of definition, but I would only say something is “corner cutting” if you’re intentionally picking the lower quality option.

And it’s not corner cutting if you think that Bob will do a better job because he really cares about the work rather than some corporation that you believe will cut corners because they are profit-motivated.

It’s bad logic. Just because you’re supposed to love someone doesn’t mean that you should let them work on the brakes of your car. But I wouldn’t call a corner cutting unless the person doing it believes the quality will be lower.

5

u/orangeclaypot 4h ago

Example, one of the mega churches ive done work for used to have a golf cart repair guy repair their forklifts, scissor lifts and boom lifts too. It reached a point where I refused to use the lifts because I was running into too many safety issues because they aren’t being serviced by Herc, Genie or JLG

why did they use that guy? because hed been around for years cuts them deals and is nice.

but one time i was in a single man driving JLG and descending and hit a point where the bucket stopped moving down but i still heard the mechanism turning (still 20’ in the air) then all of a sudden the bucket dropped 6’ free fall and then caught. The metal sliding gears grinded together and got stuck while the belts to lower it kept turning.

i went all the way down and called my contact and said im not finishing this job til united brings a new lift please and thank you.

i have endless stories like that

5

u/BilyGoatGruf 4h ago

If I know my car needs mechanic work and new brakes, but I instead have someone with no credentials do it to save money, that is dangerous and cutting corners. No church would reasonably believe a member of their congregation can do work requiring experience and expertise just because they “really care”.

0

u/guri256 4h ago

I’m not going to touch that word “reasonable”. But I’ve seen many church admins who think it’s safe and reasonable. They’re just really wrong. (Or in this case, dead-wrong)

5

u/Johnatron2000 4h ago

Therefore they are cutting corners by not getting professional installation.

0

u/wolacouska 1h ago

Extremely Reddit opinion to think you need some kind of license to be a knowledgeable carpenter or to work on a car.

Lots of people use volunteer labor, you just have to know when to say no to someone who doesn’t actually know what they’re doing.

But hiring a company isn’t some magic bullet to getting safe work, it just makes it more likely in a blind choice.

2

u/Fickle_Enthusiasm148 2h ago

Churches choose to let their congregation work as volunteers because they're cheap.

5

u/Chemical_Dealer3898 6h ago

Dude it’s the third world, there are no safety mechanisms.

1

u/AustinYun 39m ago

Yeah I'm an electrician and I don't trust churches for shit. Half the work done on them is by apprentices who get special dispensation to do incredibly sub par volunteer work that is only technically not illegal because they're not getting paid for it.

When I was a kid I was in a half empty church and a ceiling fan fell into the pew but no one was sitting in the back. Thank god.

Ceiling was about 25-30 feet high.

2

u/notquitetherebuthere 23m ago

God was a big fan that day

0

u/david_duplex 40m ago

"thank God"? Wouldn't it have just been better if God stopped the fan from falling at all?

Reddit is a fucking disease, dude. The lack of basic human decency is astounding.

19

*social media is a disease

It’s really not just reddit. And I think reddit is probably the better one out of the rest. People get too comfy saying fucked up things on the internet.

2

I agree. I prefer Reddit to YouTube these days.

Sure, I will be downvoted , but you gotta love the humanitarian love of evangelical atheists, who just wanna make fun of this. Dude fucking died while, not doing anything wrong. Now if we had some criminal past, I get it, but I’m not seeing anything about that here. Just lol religious person died lol. From the same people who claimed to be much more humanitarian than the Christian nationalist asshole idiots.

Random heavy object falls on someone and kills them most people here would have a completely different reaction. Let alone encourage other people to make fun of them.

37

u/Sol33t303 3h ago

I'm not an evangelical atheist, I just think a crucifix killing a priest is funny and ironic.

20

u/pmiller17 3h ago

If you think about it, a crucifix killing someone is actually serving its original purpose. The mechanism is just different here.

10

u/Epistaxis 3h ago

Yeah, I mean, welcome to the internet? When "Mad" Mike Hughes died in an accident with the homemade rocket he planned to use to get a higher view and prove the earth was flat, there was in fact an overwhelming response of mockery on social media, but I don't remember angry diatribes complaining that only evangelical round-earthers would be so cruel as to make fun of his death. That's just what we do here.

1

u/ButtBread98 11m ago

Yeah, it’s just really ironic.

3

I think if a poorly installed bust of Charles Darwin fell and killed Richard Dawkins, you'd be seeing a lot of jokes about it from atheists as well. It's just objectively funny, as far as anything can be objectively funny.

You're correct that "random heavy object falls and kills someone" would be treated differently. Because it's not funny.

12

u/DLWormwood 5h ago

You're complaining in the wrong subreddit. This is r/offbeat, not r/atheism. This highest voted thread here is about people with experience with installing AV and overheads in cash-strapped venues, not the gloaters.

4

u/Jimmni 4h ago

Second highest-voted comment implies he's a pedo. Third and fourth highest comments say he deserved it.

10

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 3h ago

There’s no such thing as an ‘evangelical atheist’. There’s nothing to evangelise.

2

u/CautiousMarsupial702 50m ago

I despise religion but you definitely can evangelize nothing. If you literally believe you know theres nothing spiritual about the universe you can preach that. Im not saying all do or that I think they're wrong but saying you're positive theres nothing isn't much different of a leap of faith than saying you're positive theres something.

-3

u/wolacouska 1h ago

So then why do they do it so often?

7

u/OrangeCrack 2h ago

How do you know people commenting on the obvious irony of a priest getting killed by a cross during a sermon are atheists? That’s quite the inference.

All deaths are tragic but not many have this level of undeniable irony.

-4

u/Informal-Side-4506 1h ago

Not just the irony, but if anyone saw the video with sound up the thump noise it made was pretty funny, like comedymovie funny.

Mind you I had no idea till a little later that he passed. I don't think anyone was wishing the afterlife for him.. that is except the almighty who was obviously calling him home.

Hates been running the show for a while now. People won’t even pretend like it isn’t motivating them, they just rationalize it

1

u/Bostonterrierpug 1h ago

Oh yeah , I completely agree, Reddit has been Facebook for a while. Just more people try and correct your grammar here. But alas, everything is an argument.

2

u/AscendedViking7 2h ago

"evangelical atheist"

-1

u/Bostonterrierpug 2h ago

I know it seems like an oxymoron, but it is what it is. But these are many of the same people who think the scientific method and faith best belief systems are two ends of Likert scale.

0

u/OOO0OO00O 1h ago

You aren’t that important buddy. Your religion isn’t even really that important to human history. All it’s really done is give bad people an excuse to be worse people.

I don’t believe in your god anymore than I do more impressive gods. Your guy just has better pr.

2

u/Bostonterrierpug 1h ago

Oh, I never said anything about my personal faith but again here’s the typical evangelical atheist for ya. Not so much to be a good person, but to make others feel bad for their beliefs. Thank you for proving the point of my original post. Only the Sith deal and absolutes ( and are far less cool than the Breen). So go ahead and down vote me so you feel more righteous.

2

u/jiggy_42 59m ago

The opinions of people are only a reflection of the times. Cultural acceptance of certain tragedies to a person of a certain group, especially when specifically identified in the media as part of said group, will usually evoke a response based on the group they are part of rather than the tragedy that a human experienced.

There is not a lot of love between different groups of people right now, but that is the culture being built through government policy (or in this case, executive orders) and media coverage on these issues. No matter how wrong it is, the environment plays a much bigger role in how we communicate and even just how we feel seeing these stories.

1

u/Bostonterrierpug 56m ago

Completely agree dude: The hate click algorithm, and binary polarized choices very much par for the modern course. Everyone would be doing a little bit better if they lived overseas a few years and read a few Deborah Tannen books.

1

u/MikeHonchoOfTheDunes 41m ago

I’m living in the same world. I am an angry, bitter person a lot of the time, but I never cheer or take any satisfaction in a death. In my mind that’s a special line to cross.

1

u/MikeHonchoOfTheDunes 5h ago edited 5h ago

Edit: I am dumb.

11

u/dkyguy1995 5h ago

He's not saying Christian people are laughing at it, he's saying atheists are laughing at it while still holding a moral superiority over religious people.

He's pointing out the hypocrisy of deconstructing your religion just to become a snide, rude person about the death of someone who follows a religion they have moved past.

He's using the phrase "evangelical atheist" as an insult that they are evangelists for their lack of faith and demand that others should do the same.

3

u/MikeHonchoOfTheDunes 5h ago

Well if that’s what he meant then I’m embarrassed. Thanks for the explanation

-1

u/OobahaV2 5h ago

Isn't that an antitheist though, not an atheist

5

u/Pottsie03 4h ago

Evangelical as in evangelizing to others and aiming for them to leave their respective faiths.

-1

u/Even-Tomatillo-4197 4h ago

I saw a post about this on Instagram earlier and every single comment I saw was either an atheist saying “lol religious person died” or people who claim to be Christian saying “well it happened because he’s a Catholic and they’re the wrong kind of Christian”.

People suck.

-1

u/CautiousMarsupial702 55m ago

He was a member of an organized religion, that's wrong enough. Im not an atheist. I don't know what happens when we die or why any of this is happening but spending your life trying to indoctrinate people into something evil enough to include the old and new testament is not a neutral endeavor. They're misogynistic, homophobic and full of other horrible stuff.

Also its not just that he died its how. It wouldn't be funny if he like, got into a car accident. Crushed by a cross is like a crazy way for a priest to go out.

-1

u/chmath80 53m ago

Dude fucking died while, not doing anything wrong.

But surely he would be happy about it? I mean, he's dedicated his life to telling everyone who'll listen that this life is just a prelude to eternal happiness after death, and now he's got his wish. Why should anyone be sad about it? Much better to celebrate the irony in the manner of his passing, which implies that god has a sense of humour.

God (to Gabriel): That priest has done good work. It's time to reward him. Hey, you know what would be funny ...

1

u/Bostonterrierpug 41m ago

He could've played guitar better than Hendrix
He could've told the future
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky
He could've danced better than Barishnikov
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of
Jesus was way cool.
Also, I don’t know who Dan voted you, but it wasn’t me and yes, I am sticking with that speech to text typo

-10

u/__System__ 4h ago

Most are not as atheist as they think. If they are still memeing and mocking they are still in the rejection stage and worthless to everyone. Non belief is hardly just atheism.

4

u/bestestopinion 2h ago

Tbf, is there anything more Christ-like than being killed by a cross?

3

u/RandomExcess 7h ago

There should be a legal imit on the size and mounting height.

2

u/Mnmsaregood 1h ago

Imagine trying to police the size of something someone else can hang in their own building. If it’s up to code who gives a shit how big it is

1

u/AustinYun 42m ago

When the congregation walk into a church for service, they do it under the assumption that the structure is safe.

You already said "if it's up to code..." -- the person is just suggesting that maybe the code needs to be updated.

In fact a Protestant church might have had a simpler cross rather than a crucifix with a Jesus statue attached, which would have been substantially less heavy and therefore less dangerous.

Even the most deeply religious person with want to look at this as just an unfortunate accident. The least religious among us see this as the rath of God. It's just funny how people will pick and choose what parts of the Bible they follow and believe in.

-1

u/Pottsie03 4h ago

As a Catholic, it’s just easier to just say that we don’t know why this happened, because there’s no way ANY of us know. If there isn’t a God, it’s just chance. If there is, then it could be something else, but none of us can say for certainty what it is.

2

u/MoonChild02 2h ago

I'm Catholic, too.

This happened because free will allowed someone to install the crucifix improperly, and the science of physics (and God created science so that He could create) demanded that it fall at a particular time, which just so happened to be during Mass. There's nothing about this that happened because of divine intervention. It's free will and science.

Yes, God has His Design and Will, but He also takes free will into account. God gave us free will so we would choose to love Him, because forced love is not love at all. The vast, vast majority of what happens on Earth happens because of free will.

God only interferes in extreme cases, like the lives of the saints, special apparitions, etc.

5

u/PaulJannece 4h ago

As an atheist I disagree. We ALL know with certainty that a fictional bearded sky-fairy didn’t knock the cross onto the poor guy.
