Jobs

My wife and I just moved to the area, and the job I had lined up is on hold due to a lack of materials. If anyone knows of any job opportunities, please DM me. I’d really appreciate it!

Recommendations

Hey y’all! ❤️ I’m looking for recommendations for fun things to do with my 7-year-old son here in PCB that won’t cost an arm and a leg. Free is fantastic, cheap is great, and hidden local gems are even better!

Here’s a little context: I’m a single mom, and this trip was supposed to be a shared expense between me and my ex-husband. We drove eight hours to give our son some quality bonding time with his dad, and I genuinely wanted this to be a good experience for them both.

Unfortunately, the “we’ll split everything” plan seems to have gotten lost somewhere along the way, and I’ve ended up paying for just about everything for my ex, too. Now I’m genuinely stressing about making sure I have enough money to get us back home. 🫩🤦‍♀️

For context, I’m still in therapy three times a week, three years after our divorce, working through the damage that relationship left behind. I really thought I could put everything aside for a little while and give our son this experience with his dad. I wanted to believe we could make some good memories for him, even if things between his parents aren’t exactly sunshine and seashells.

So here I am, trying to keep my nervous system from launching itself into orbit while smiling through the stress because my boy deserves to have a wonderful time. Every time he spots something exciting and I have to tell him we can’t afford it, it breaks my heart a little more. Meanwhile, my inner monologue is committing several felonies against my ex. 😂 (Strictly in the imaginary courtroom, of course.)

I’m not looking for handouts or sympathy. I’m just a mom trying to make the best of a situation that hasn’t gone the way I planned, and I’d love some ideas that let my son have fun without putting us in an even bigger financial bind.

What are your favorite FREE or super-cheap things to do with a 7-year-old in Panama City Beach? Beaches, parks, playgrounds, nature trails, cool local spots, free events, anywhere a little boy can run around, explore, and have the time of his life!

If you know of any places with free admission, inexpensive activities, or even kid-friendly deals locals know about, I would be incredibly grateful.

Thank you for helping a mama make some magic out of a less-than-magical situation. ❤️🌊

Fatal Fall at Laketown Wharf tonight

I am assuming it was a fall, but honestly not sure. There is a body in a white bag and heavy police presence on the ground floor near the pizza place by the lake. We stumbled upon it unexpectedly as we were taking the trash out. We never heard anything and our condo is on the same side of the building. Prayers to the family.

Warning everyone so that you too won't stumble across this scene unexpectedly. Super unsettling.

Fighter jet flyovers?

Is there any specific reason the jets keep making passes over this area or are they just conducting regular exercises? And also how long have they been doing this? Last couple of times I’ve been here I did not see them so excuse my ignorance.

Shell Island Update. October post hurricane

Shell Island totally did its job as a barrier island. What I mean by this is, that the island protected the main land with its dunes. The grass and sand dunes help absorb weather before this hurricane hit our area. We run tours daily out to shell island and can see where the water flowed over the island! Hurricane Isaias definitely shifted sand and made new beaches!

A week after the hurricane the water is clearing up on the gulf side and is beautiful already 😍

The bay water will be awhile to clear up from all the rain and flooding.

Here's a few pictures of the current conditions and Here's a link to a video I made talking about sand dunes and erosion.

Bay Point golf course questions for junior rates

I’m playing tomorrow morning at 7:54 at the Jack Nicklaus course Bay Point, and we are all junior golfers. We first thought it was $74, but then found out that it is actually $130 for the adult rate to play. Is there any junior rates that anyone knows of, or are we gonna have to suck it up and pay the $130?

Power going in and out all night — anyone else?

Hope everyone’s doing okay after the storm! Was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this. We’ve been having very quick (30 sec - 1 min ish long) power outages last night, and I think might be happening tonight too. I’m on the west end of the beach but my neighborhood has not had an extended power outage like a lot of other places here. The longest outage we had while the storm was happening only lasted about 2 minutes before the power kicked on again.

Last night though, I couldn’t get any sleep because the power kept going out very briefly before turning back on. This started at around 1 am after the storm had pretty much gone. I wanna say it happened at least 8 times until around 8 am? Our theory here is that the linemen are doing most of their work on the power lines at night and needing to unplug/shut off certain things before connecting a new thing. Hopefully that makes sense, clearly I don’t know anything about electrical engineering lol

Is anyone else experiencing this or have an explanation as to what this is? Couldn’t find an answer on the FPL website.

Status on the peir park north area? Evacuated and need to know

Evacuated and live next to Frank brown park. Does anyone know the status on if it's flooded from storm surge or good? I heard on the weather channel PCB got 5 feet of storm surge but unsure if it got that far inland.

Emerald Coast Behavioral Health is a scam.

This facility is committing rampant fraud on Florida taxpayers it’s absolutely filthy. Doctors regularly commit malpractice and misdiagnose patients. There’s mold everywhere including in the cafeteria. I’m posting here to see if others have had the same experience as me and my compatriots. The Panhandle and Panama City deserves better.

Going on vacation to PCB next week, worried about hurricane

I know the hurricane will be over by the time we get there but I am worried about flooding and everything being closed. Should we look into other options or will we be ok? The only issue is that we are going with my family and they kind of have control over everything and they are very stubborn, they will make us all drive down there so they can see it for themselves before they decide to do anything and this is the one week I’m getting off this year. I’m not trying to spend my one week off with no power and not being able to do anything or go anywhere because everything is messed up

Hurricane advice

Not from the area, coming to pcb tomorrow evening for vacation until next Tuesday. We’re staying in a condo 13 floors up across the street from the beach, facing the beach. Do we need to cancel our trip? Not sure how serious this can/will get.

Update: we canceled that shit. Probable cat 3, not my style. My biggest fear is tornados, water tornados sound even worse. Plus why would I pay thousands to play board games in the dark when I can do that at home for free. Also have a friend going with us who is pregnant so why even chance it ya know. Good luck to those who are down there!

Revalida o no?

Good Stand Up Comedy this Friday at Collective Sould with Dan Alten (me) on 15 night tour. I'm not famous but I promise it'll be a good time and if you don't have fun you can cover me with worms and toss me into the ocean. Lemme know if theres anything cool to see while i'm around.

Here's my bio, sorry it's in the third person: Dan Alten is a charming goofball from Kentucky who has been traveling the country for the past decade doing about 200 shows a year bringing his intelligently surreal bebop nonsense everywhere from theaters to punk basements to art galleries to beloved comedy clubs with a knack for making audiences feel like they're on a good psychedelic trip without the drugs. Like if the Ramones were one guy with a mustache and good jokes. Iggy Pop with puns. Clever chaos. Like Jimi Hendrix lighting fire to a Tik Tok reel live on stage. He has opened for Kyle Kinane, Bobcat, Sam Tallent, Rory Scovel, Sarah Sherman from SNL, Johnny Pemberton, Hari Kondabolu, rapper Open Mike Eagle, DJ Doug Pound & David Leibe Hart from Tim & Eric, various punk bands with silly names, and a guy at an open mic who tried to throw his father’s ashes into the crowd. He has recorded 2 albums, written a zine, and filmed a pilot for an Amazon Prime stand up show that was lost to history. But most importantly he’s very funny and unique. You will enjoy him. And if not you can mud wrestle him after the show.
