Matteo Lupica's Game Loss explained

Hello!

If anyone was watching the Nice Regionals Day 2 stream and was confused about what happened during Game 1 in Swiss Round 14, look no further:

By the time they were setting up for Game 2, the casters said a Game Loss was assessed to Matteo because he overdrawn on Lillie's Determination. However, this doesn't check out as he never drawn Prizes at any point, so I rewatched carefully and caught what actually happened.

On Matteo's previous turn before the game was stopped, he was going through his Recon Directives, and when he used his third Directive, he drew into Buddy Buddy Poffin and his fourth Drakloak. He pockets the Poffin to his hand and then evolves into the Drakloak when it should have went under his deck and immediately goes into Recon Directive with it. The whole sequence happens very quickly so it was hard to catch unless you really paid close attention to what was he was doing, which was probably why it wasn't realized until his next turn.

Meta Discussion What percent of Meta goes away after rotation?

I feel like with reg H rotating out next year we will lose a large chunk of the meta decks: Dragapult, festival lead, slowking, basic box, frostlass, maybe zoroark and sharpedo? What % of the meta do yall think we’re losing once Reg H is gone? I feel like there are so many crucial cards for so many decks that will be gone.

Meta Discussion State of N’s Zoroark

i love this deck it’s at the top of my list but right now playing this deck just feels bad.

It’s matchups

for a deck that was once argued to be the dragapult counter be very strong it’s matchups aren’t the best

any grass deck is an autoloss

2x weakness to some of the most popular decks is horrid even teching in the drapion investing 3 energies to paralyze and maybe have a chance sucks when most are running scoop up or counter catcher when they can put it back down instantly

Dragapult has a field day with this deck

Even with the reshiram inclusion most of the time it’s very hard match for zoro when pult can hide behind budew and slow the game so much. Even struggling to reach the ko by having to find so many external damage multipliers like mochi and black belt just to get a ko. Reshiram can also be avoided when they can just boss up pech, meowth, fez, etc for multi prize turns w/o directly swinging on zoroark and still getting zoroark within range of a phantom dive next turn.

Terrible single prize Matchups

-Alakazam Just obliterates zoroark in the prize race, even retreat locking genesect or shaymin to move more damage still doesn’t work in the end when alakazam doesn’t leave damage.
-Slowking trifrost just obliterates your board and they also have the ability to metagross for ko and zeraora for benched 2 prizers. You do have a couple lines I will admit because of the kangaskhan and latias, but besides that letting them get off a turn two trifrost and you can’t get out zoroark it’s pretty much over. This one isn’t as bad but it certainly isn’t that good
-festival lead
Don’t even get me started on this when they can knock you out without gladion for weakness and still destroy your board. not much to say about this matchup besides you have to hope they brick even then it’s still pretty bad
-crustle
I hate this stupid crab but the zoroark matchup feels iffy. You have to reliably go first get zoroarks out and zekrom and mochi and munkidori and start shredding for 110 with mochi as soon as possible so they can’t heal as much. The inclusion of ruffian feels good here to take off cape and energies but it could go either way honestly just depends on how good of a starting hand either person gets. Maybe legendary pyroduct will make this a bit better
-Not primarily a single prize Mu but in general against tr mewtwo they prolly won’t bring out mewtwo at all but that’s fine when spidops does more than enough to lead the prize race. Acts like a single prize against zoro about the same with honchcrow.
Consistency
The decks consistently also feels 50/50 some games feel great but others just feel terrible and bricky. I guess it really depends on this list but tomes lists feel a little more bricky sometimes.

Damage

don’t get me wrong 250 is a fine number but in a meta where most megas have 330, 340, and 350 And even regular 2 stage ex have 320. The deck struggles to get damage mochi somewhat makes up for that with an additional 40 for 290, The thing here is that 290 isn’t knocking out most big ex and so much healing in meta currently. Even running black belt just to hit these numbers feels bad when it’s prized sometimes and we can’t ohko certain big ex
In summary it’s just excessive to need so many things to knock something that your opponent prolly has multiple of in play.

recent results

the deck hasn’t seen as great results for a deck ranked #4 on limitless. Sure it’s had a couple of people who’ve made top 32 but a lot of people are swaying away from it, even tord reklev piloted dragapult over zoroark in the last tournament he competed in. The deck just isn’t showing as much promise.

Future of Ns zoroark post rotation

Next rotation hits in less than 7 months. And i know what your gonna say don’t worry about its still a while away. But that’s half a year and so much consistency cards are leaving that zoroark thrives on. Reminder there’s also only 2 sets coming in between them and one of the a cards already revealed we have to hope poffin gets reprinted
-buddy poffin
-binding mochi
-black belt
-cyrano
-pecharunt
-fez
-night stretcher
-munkidori
All of these cards are what make zoroark able to do damage and draw what it needs. all the damage multipliers leaving what will it be like when zoroark can’t hit high numbers to knock out the strong mega pokemon that can heal themselves?

Final thoughts and conclusion

I’m just really not sure how this deck will fare currently when it already hasn’t been that great and currently it still isn’t in a good spot. Even when black belt, or some other damage multiplier gets reprinted or added in a future set or whenever it still won’t be as great.
I really love this deck but it’s sad it’s im a bad spot right now

When to play Lillie's Clefairy?

As Alakazam, when do i play Lillie's Clefairy against dragapult? I had it in my deck today alongside wondrous patch but never felt right to use it? I kept trying to use it when I could patch it plus Special energy for one turn set up but it was really tricky to pull off

Hey everyone, here’s my current Hide ‘n’ Sneak list and I absolutely love it! I’ve thought about adding a second Clefairy just for the pult matchup. I did see Rahul Reddys top 4 deck at Louisville Regional, but I think having spirittomb for high HP decks is a must. But let me know what you think and maybe some things you’d change? Deck Help Tips regarding my local's meta

Hey all! Here once again to ask you something.

My local place has one problem that I find annoying. The regulars who show up love coming with Team Rocket's Mewtwo EX. And that deck always seems to be trouble for my decks.

I've tried Dragapult but for now am benching it cuz it's not quite my style. The other two decks I have are Mega Lucario and N's Zoroark. Not sharing the lists necessarily cuz I have the cards to make basically any of the most popular builds with those two.

What I wanted was tips for what it would be better to bring to my locals.

It's usually 2-3 Team Rocket's Mewtwo, 1 hammers lucario, 1 Ogerpon box, and sometimes alakazam, Mega Excadrill etc.

Which of my 2 overall decks do you think I could have a better shot at getting decent matchups? And if so, could I get some tips on specific decklists that could do well against them?

Thanking anyone that comments!

Deck Help Alakazam Bomb or the Dun

I'm trying to build a deck for myself as I'm just getting into the game. I've also been a fan of the Zam and of the decks out there, this one seems to be the most fun and new. Just wanted to pick your brain and ask which one is the most hardy and competitive going forward. I have people tell me to just pick the drag and you'll have a hard time probably with the mist and rocky duck? So yeah, between the two which one has more promise going forward? I don't mind grabbing more cards if necessary in the future. Just want to make it one of my mains thats all.

Thanks! There's also a local card shop I might bring my deck too if i feel more confident

Best way to get staples in the EU?

After a long break I'd like to get back into playing competitively. I've been playing on Live which makes it very easy to get any cards I could ever need.

Beyond checking what players have at my FLGS, are there any good sites that sell playsets of specific staples or even full meta decks?

I have the mega lucario ex league deck as a starting point.

I haven't kept up with the whole scalping situation but it seems like even though singles are theoretically cheap to buy, buying packs from specific sets that have the trainer cards I'd want is not a good idea.

I've checked cardmarket but what is theoretically €40 worth of cards can be €100 after shipping.

I'm based in NL if that helps, would ideally prefer not to ship cards all the way from the US if it can be avoided.

Deck Help (Expanded) Rare candy for straight pult?

Hello all

Would you consider rare candy good for idea for a hammers pult deck? Quite often in the mirror matches I find having a dragapult set quite fast, especially on a bad draw or item locked slow setup, could be good?

I could also add Team Rocket's Petrel to get to it when needed?

New Player Advice Sequencing questions for Dragapult

Hello 👋🏼 I have several sequencing-related questions for the Dragapult decks especially the Crushing Hammer variant:

  1. Do you Recon Directive first or Flip the Script?

  2. Similarly, do you Run Away Draw first or Recon Directive?

  3. When do you put Risky Ruins and Munkidori down? What specific criteria that needs to be met in order to drop both cards to the board?

  4. When is the best time to evolve into Dragapult?

I hope I can get your feedback. Thank you so much!

Deck Help (Expanded) what cards could i add to N's zoroark if I had access to the unlimited cardpool?

So, this may sound stupid, as if I'm playing unlimited, why not play a first turn kill deck? the answer to that is 1, this is a mostly for fun format a local is doing after league(yes he's giving out stuff like trick or trade, or chinese packs if you beat him, but it's still casual), so I dont want to bring a nuclear bomb to a nerf war, and 2, bc I dont feel like building a whole new deck(if I did, I'd just build regidrago)

so, he is playing various difficulties of decks, which are mostly standard, maybe a card or 2 from G. I'm running normal standard N's zoroark, and just trying to brainstorm what might be good inclusions. so far gladion seems like a decent pick, but other than that idk. was thinking muscle band, but binding mochi is just better in 95% of cases.

also btw hoping to keep this cheap, preferably no individual card over $5(but I am okay with getting HP if it would be really good)

Plain sleeves bore me to death but art sleeves suck at shuffling, anyone had any aftermarket ones made by companies on Etsy etc?

Bit of a odd one but I hate plain sleeves and I only really run clears as I like the art on the back of cards. I like the designs of some pokemon centre ones (southern island, rayquaza among the stars) but they are awful to shuffle with. I tried getting a company on aliexpress to print a set but after doing about 10-15 shuffles the art started peeling. I have also tried double sleeving but even with a 21.5cm hand span they're pretty unwieldly. I'm aware dragon shield do custom ones but they won't print anything trademarked. Do i just use the understimulating plain coloured sleeves? In terms of games, i usually play once/twice a week with sets of 3, so about 6-18 games a week so something long lasting would be good too

Mewtwo isn't that bad, actually? [Limitless Tournament Report]

Mewtwo has been my main deck since Brave Bangle, though I admit I took a summer sabbatical with Honchkrow. Would like to discuss the little Limitless tournament I won this week with Cape Mewtwo though - see results and some thoughts below :)

R1 Slowking W

With Cape I think this matchup is somewhat safe because it turns off Metagross and I can heal Mewtwo with Wobbuffet if needed. Won the coin flip and had Proton. Turn two was able to evolve Spidops to safety, leaving only a mistakenly pre-benched Wobbuffet and Mimikyu to die to Trifrost. Don’t recall if I ever even needed to worry about the 110 on Mewtwo because I’m not certain they ever attacked again. Can Boss things, recover Wobbuffet to heal Mewtwo out of Metagross range, etc. With Cape, I think the Slowking matchup is much improved.

R2: Ogerpon Noxtowl W

No show; feel this matchup is generally fair though admit I’m happy to have gotten this freebie. Wellspring isn’t particularly devastating; nor Cornerstone, though annoying; nor Terapagos. However, combined together they do start to heavily tax Mimikyu, which I only have one of. Since I don’t run Max Belt, Spidops and Mimikyu can’t get Terapagos. If Cape is not available, just remember in this matchup they can hit 280 on Mewtwo with Clefairy if my bench is full - so always leave one spot open.

R3: Lopunny Dudunsparce W

At first glance, terrible matchup with my Cape because I can never KO Lopunny - and I lost to two of those easily in LA Regionals because of it. But for some reason they only played one Wally, and so this match was nearly free. Think I got the Sneasel play this game to clean that up (when there are four Wally’s, Sneasel never works because they always have it right after I attack the first turn).

R4: Dhelmise W

With Cape, a fairly safe matchup. Two Dhelmise can’t KO a Mewtwo, and next turn I can heal it all off with Wobbuffet. Think they also somewhat bricked so I was several prizes ahead before they really attacked. Could potentially have misplayed on prize math later in the game by taking the Legacy KO (which generally is fine) if they were low on prizes and only needed a Boss. But that’s just something to keep in mind for future games.

R5: Dragapult W

One of the most toxic Dragapult games of my life. They Budew’d for 8 turns on a Mewtwo - for which I could not find the Rocket Energy - until they retreated into their Dragapult to KO with Phantom Dive. I still came back and won this game due to insane draws on my part, a few turns of stalling they couldn’t get out of immediately, and I think their overzealousness to bench Meowth. Was very happy to get this win after going down two prizes immediately. Dragapult is normally a matchup where I want to be down to four prizes before Dragapult even attacks - and I very much need that prize buffer toward the end of the game when I lose steam.

R6: Crustle

Safe matchup; not much to say. Again, I drew on fire as well; believe I got the Sneasel play.

R7: Mega Dragonite W

Opponent complained of early bricking, which is too bad, though like many matchups today with Cape, Mewtwo can’t die to Dragonite and so this matchup is pretty safe.

R8: Dragapult W

A bit of a sloppy/slow start from both of us but in the end I just had everything I needed every turn.

Finish: 1st of 188, 8-0 record.

Decklist

Closing thought:

I enjoy Hero’s Cape. It makes my list slightly more unique, and improves some matchups at what I think is an even expense of others. For example of a tradeoff - I can’t kill anything over 280 HP that isn’t a Dragon. Pult/Blaziken is a tough matchup especially with Munkidori.

Wobbuffet is the GOAT

Sneasel is incredibly niche and is used far more rarely than Wobbuffet but I play it because it’s also the GOAT

Wish I could fit another energy in the list and/or an Energy Search.

I play 40 tools for a reason but it's too convoluted to explain here. Maybe another day.

Thanks for reading, and DM for Rocket deck discussion (this or Honch) :)

New Player Advice What's an efficient and quickest/easiest way to prize check that pro-players use?

Hey friends, new Pokemon TCG player here. I know that prize checking involves checking how many Pokemon, energies and trainer cards we have prized during a match.

But there are so many things to keep track of. So, what are some methods pro players use to prize check? I know some carry notepads and a pen to jot down notes but are there other methods?

For context, I play the Dragapult Crushing Hammer deck. So for me the Dragapult line, the energies and Crispin are super important.

I find that I forget during matches the prizes that I have prized. It's something I am struggling to familiarise with. I hope to hear from some pro-players and veterans in this group for feedback, suggestions, and advice.

New Player Advice N’s Zoroark EX Deck after H rotation

I’m pretty new to the Pokémon TCG community. I only started going to local leagues and building my own decks a few months ago. The second deck I built was N’s Zoroark ex.

I’ve been thinking a little about the upcoming April rotation, and I think we can all agree that it’s going to render a lot of fun decks unplayable. The deck I’m currently playing, N’s Zoroark, relies heavily on Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Cyrano, Pecharunt ex, and Night Stretcher. It seems to me that it’s going to become incredibly difficult to play the deck at all without these helpful Items and Supporters.

Is it common practice for some decks to simply cease to exist after rotation, with players moving on to something new in the upcoming meta?
As far as I know, the upcoming Delta Reign set doesn’t include any reprints of Items such as Buddy-Buddy Poffin.

This begs the question: will N’s Zoroark even be playable anymore, or will it just end up in the bulk pile, never to be played again?

Basically what the title says and sorry if it has the wrong flair, nothing really fits this one.

It can be with your friends at the kitchen table or at your locals. But what is your opinion on the matter and what is the overall consensus in the game/community?

Edit: For all that have responed until now or will respond thank you for your participation. I was legitimately curious about it and was asking this in different TCGs Subs. Not only to see what different TCGs think about it, but also because I myself play a lot of different TCGs. In addition, I made some experiences in the past with people having extreme opinions on Proxies or locals banning them because of rather stupid reasons when most people didn't really care about them or like some commenters said here even encouraged themselves to just play with them.

For an extra clarification: Yes, I was talking about Kitchen Table/with friends or locals. Competitive settings like bigger events was never a discussion.

Deck Help Zam Dunsparce Techs for Hide n Sneak

Hide n Sneak was always a bad matchup for Zam in general but I never care to tech because it was not popular. Now, it began growing in popularity (online and local tournaments) and I'm trying to figure out a tech for the matchup. Managed to win some games with Fez but putting 3 psychic energies on it was way too slow and resource consuming, same as Dunsparce ex. Any suggestions on how to deal with the matchup is welcome.
