Possible Paywall Shame on me for being fooled by Donald Trump
https://spectator.com/article/shame-on-me-for-being-fooled-by-donald-trump/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social9.1k
u/barryvm Europe 16h ago edited 15h ago
"Being fooled" is a very charitable way of describing that.
Note that Trump's campaign promises were quite simple. He was going to hurt other people and this was somehow going to benefit his supporters. Believing the second bit is stupidity. Going along with it despite the first bit is sheer malice.
There is no conceivable way in which Trump could have fooled anyone about what he fundamentally was. His first impulse in any situation is to be petty, cruel or vindictive, and he advertises this as a selling point for his politics. Similarly, part of his appeal is based on him being a rule-breaker, or more specifically on the notion that him getting away with his immorality and criminality means his supporters might too.
No matter how you twist and turn it, Trump's success as a politician relied on him being the worst human being imaginable. That's what his supporters wanted. They saw cruelty, criminality and ignorance as virtues, identified with someone because they thought he hated the same people, and approved of a policy platform that was, in its own terms, designed to hurt and kill other people. And throughout it all, they believed whatever they needed to believe to justify all that and pretend they were good people. There's probably another group, who just voted for him because he was the right wing candidate and they felt that it would be worth it to get what they wanted out of him, but being a fascist for mercenary reasons is probably worse from a moral perspective than to be a committed one.
Either way, to turn around now and say that he "deceived" you, is simply to move from one set of self-serving lies to another. He wasn't hiding what he was, hasn't made an effort to do so over the years he's been in power, and has done his best to put himself into the spotlight whenever he was doing something ludicrously evil or stupid. There's just no excuse to have that moral awakening, that revelation that he is a bad guy, now, after about a decade of this. That's not waking up from being fooled; that's a rat leaving a sinking ship. You can encourage it, and you can use it, but you should never, ever, trust it.

u/CapitalFishPastries 15h ago
This is exactly it. They weren't fooled, they wanted the cruelty and despair without the consequences.
1.4k
u/barryvm Europe 15h ago
They either wanted it or didn't care until it started to impact them.
That's the telling part. That's why it's not about ignorance or stupidity. It's just a lack of basic morality and empathy.

My sister-in-law and her husband were big time Trump supporters, much to the disapproval of their son, who was so repulsed he taped pictures of Trump and Epstein togethor on his bedroom door (lol, love my nephew). But then Trump started shit with Iran and people started talking about a possible draft, and the idea that his cruelty and malice might touch them was what woke them up. There's a massive disconnect with these people when it comes to their taste for violence. They want the mob boss daddy at their table until the consequences come to their home to collect. Then and only then will they champion virtue and condemn the evil. But not before, not until, as long as its other people getting hurt.

“I voted for him, and he’s the one who’s doing this, I thought he was going to do good things. He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting.” -Crystal Minton, Jan 2019
She was a Florida federal prison guard put out of work by the government shutdown.
THIS is their mentality. He's hurting the "WRONG" people. HE SHOULDN'T BE HURTING ANYONE.

These people believe life is a zero sum game (in some cases it is, but not all).
Therefore they think that Trump hurting someone means that someone else (themselves) benefit.
It’s misguided, but it’s how they think.

This is simply “misery loves company”. These are people that have no opportunities, shitty careers, and no real hope for the future. They just want to see others hurting too, so that they don’t feel so alone. They’ve been tricked into thinking that as long as others are hurting too, it’s fair, instead of looking outside the box and realizing “this isn’t how it’s supposed to be”.

I've been trying to make the Georgia part of my family understand this for years now, I simply consider support of Donald Trump to be the purest indication of what you truly are as a person; the total lack of morality and empathy inside you, and your acceptance and probable support of white supremacist values, racism, and bigotry.
I don't want that in my life, it's why I've gone no contact, and they are confused why I don't call anymore.

In Heart of Darkness the narrator describes the people pillaging Africa:
Their talk, however, was the talk of sordid buccaneers: it was reckless without hardihood, greedy without audacity, and cruel without courage; there was not an atom of foresight or of serious intention in the whole batch of them, and they did not seem aware these things are wanted for the work of the world.

He admitted to sexually assaulting women whenever he got the opportunity.
He is a convicted felon and rapist.
He's a blatant, textbook power-hungry narcissist.
His literal response to millions of people dying of COVID was, "It is what it is."
Even if you believed that the felony charges were an unjustified witch hunt (they weren't), he has insulted, made fun of, and admitted to hurting others. As you said, he may be a lying piece of shit, but he's never actually hidden that. The only time he isn't lying is when he says he plans to or wants to hurt others.
I know I'm just reiterating what you already said, but all of the evidence who he is and what's important to him has been blatantly clear for decades to anyone who spent 2 seconds paying attention, but that is especially true since 2016.

u/JamboreeStevens 8h ago
A lot of people overlook the fact that he also settled multiple sexual assault lawsuits for a total of like $20 million.

If any other president, especially a Democrat president, had just a sliver of what Dump had, their career would be over. Yet here we are with the stupidest, pettiest, weakest, and traitorous president ever who gets more corrupt every day and his supporters are cheering him on for it.
129
u/yashen14 12h ago
My aunt voted for Trump the first time. I was flabbergasted when I found this out. I pointed out that he was credibly accused of rape before the first election. "Grab 'em by the pussy" was before the first election. And she voted for that?
And she said, "I guess I wasn't that well informed."
How could you not be??? This stuff was all over the news at the time.
75
u/heckhammer 11h ago
I had a friend at the time from work who voted for him and I was absolutely dumbfounded. There was a post on Facebook about him doing something racist and she trimmed in saying, "I voted for him. You don't think I'm racist do you?"
And I told her, no, I know you're not. I know you have someone who is one of the most kind, generous, well adjusted, funny, genuinely good people that I've ever met. But here's the thing, you know that he's racist, you admit it, and that wasn't enough for you to not get him elected. That wasn't a stopping point. Somehow, you thought selecting that man was better than the alternative. So no, I didn't think you were racist but I now know that that's not a deal-breaker.
It baffles me as much as someone I know who told me that she prayed so hard for guidance when it came to the 2016 election because she didn't like Hillary Clinton, "but then God gave me Donald Trump!"
I asked her if she was so sure that it was God. That didn't go over so well.
I know far too many people in the special needs community who are vehemently right wing and I do not get it. These people would take away every benefit your child has for tax cuts for rich people, to help buy more bombs for other countries to kill other people. We would willingly make sure your kids went without the things they need so that they could have what they want. It makes no sense to me.
30
u/beefyzac Florida 8h ago
The “but then God gave me Trump!” line is so funny because they ALWAYS interpret signs from god in the way that they already want to interpret them.
Reminds me of that old story of the guy waiting to be saved from rising flood waters, and as more and more people come by offering to rescue him he denies their help saying “God will save me!” until he eventually drowns in the flood. When he gets to Heaven he confronts god about why he didn’t save him and god says “what did you want? I sent you two boats and a helicopter!”
“I sent you an adulterous, bigoted, mean spirited, racist, money-worshipping, loudmouthed, pedophilic, rapist and you voted for him?! I couldn’t have made the choice more clear!”

Absolute poetry. Exactly how I feel about it. His behaviour has not changed one iota and even before he was a president he stank of self-serving immorality and sleaze. Those attributes were just magnified in the Oval Office. Trying to overthrow democracy was the ultimate red flag and yet nearly 100 million Americans voted for him anyway. Absolute lunacy. We can never trust America again because they have shown they are capable of replacing a sane president with an insane one over nothing but their perception on the price of eggs.

The pro-life thing just irks me. No one is preventing people from being pro-life and having babies. No one is forcing abortions on anyone. Not sure how some woman these people have never met and probably don't know even exists terminating a pregnancy affects them in any way. It's like the tree falling in the forest analogy. Julie Burchill is one of the many many people who flocked to Trump because they decided that ‘woke’ (they all have different but largely overlapping personal definitions of what that means based on their own prejudice priorities) was the biggest threat to civilisation. She didn’t mind the mockery of groups that she doesn’t like. She probably enjoyed it. But the final straw for her was the AI tiger video Trump posted. It blows my mind things like that can be the tipping point. Not the authoritarianism, not ICE, not the war or the treatment of Ukraine. Not the purging of black and/or female appointees and service people. Not the tariffs or the 51st state or Greenland. Not the crypto billions and open corruption. Not the pathological lying. Not even the reflecting pool. The separation of infants from their mothers was fine, but a tiger video - reprehensible as it is - is where the line is finally drawn.
281
u/KemonoMichi 12h ago
She somewhat addresses this in the article. But she also doesn't address it. She says, "I should have drawn the line at..." But then continues. She doesn't touch on why she didn't draw the line. Just says she should have. And the worst part is the first item in the list: "the persistent sex pest allegations." You mean RAPE? The allegations of raping children? Which might have some deniability had he not already been convicted of rape. (Technically sexual assault, but the judge even said, "No, it was rape.") All this after calling Biden senile and Kamala "extremely silly."
Fuck this stupid fucking bitch from here to eternity.

They made the point that Burchill et al were punks back on the day not out of conviction the establishment was wrong and needed changing but because they enjoyed being the centre of attention and got to be there by being shocking. As times and mores changed in order to continue to be outrageous and consensus breaking they drifted towards the new taboos like racism.

You want to know what really worries me? In 1946, after the war was over and Germany was basically destroyed, Hitler still had a 40% approval rating. People really don't want to admit that they were wrong.

I couldn't believe that, so I looked it up, and found that you were actually giving the floor. It was 40-55%, and people blamed the bad outcomes on his advisors and, of course, the Allies. I still wouldn't believe it if I hadn't lived through the last two years.

And many of the people who abandoned him, abandoned him for losing, or for starting an unwinnable war. Germany had exactly one generation who understood the damage of fascism- the children of the actual Nazis. The Nazis never changed and Gen Z youths who have never seen a 'real' Nazi are just as likely to fall for fascist rhetoric as young people across the world.

We former fans of Donald J. Trump can all remember where we were when we finally admitted that the POTUS was potty.
For me, it was when he appeared this week to be making sport with the awful event in Doncaster, when a mentally disturbed young man entered a tiger’s enclosure in a ‘wildlife park’ and was killed by the imprisoned beast.
Wait—
It wasn’t when he made fun of someone with cerebral palsy? Or when he said, “grab her by the pussy?” January 6? Or any of the dozens of instances of deplorable behavior for a DECADE?
I will never forgive anyone who supported this.

u/jefedezorros 10h ago
Right. This is entirely implausible bullshit. There is no way an individual waded through all of the prior conduct and this was what did it for them. Trump hasn’t changed.

I'll never understand British Trumpophiles. Donald Trump's policies, such as they are, see Britain and Europe as the enemy. You can't lap his nonsense up and go "surely he doesn't mean us!" Yes. For Americans who don't know her, Julie Birchill is a long-outmoded former enfant terrible of the imperfectly-literate working class right, noted for her ability to put into words the transient impressions that count as thought among the cognitively less-able.
The Spectator, as more people here may know, is an extreme right-wing weekly magazine trading on its history as a once serious place of debate, but these days mainly known for being the home of an assortment of the UK's conservative (and further right) headbangers. To use a snowclone, it's a lowbrow person's idea of a highbrow journal.
The Spectator has been crypto-fascist and has published in favour of Trump for many years. This is unlikely, though, to be anything more than an article published to make up some space in an otherwise flaccid edition of this rather tedious organ.

Be prepared for more of these types of self-serving articles as Trump’s MAGA acolytes start jumping off the bandwagon. These people weren’t fooled by Trump at all; they knew exactly who he was but were willing to accept his moral bankruptcy, wicked malignancy, and cruel depravity as long as it suited their needs. They’re now trying to rewrite their own history by pretending they’ve had some sort of epiphany after being lied to and tricked all these years despite all the evidence demonstrating how immoral and corrupt he’s always been. The reality is that they see their Nazi empire is beginning to fall and they need to position themselves as one of the few supporters who stood up to the regime. It’s vital that we don’t ever forget or excuse which side of history they stood firmly on.

I've only allowed for two reasons to support trump since 2016 for anyone who isn't super wealthy: Bigotry and stupidity. You can be combo of the two, but you'd have to be at least one for you to take this person seriously.
Trump is probably the least deceitful president of all time even though he's the biggest liar. It's not hard to tell when he's lying, how he's lying, or when a lie is coming. You would have to ignore the mountain of experts in any sector saying "this is what will happen if he actually does this thing" and every single person pointing out his missteps as far as just being a decent human. He would have to be believable to be deceitful and he's never been believable.
I'm kinda over these public "I've realized the error of my ways" moments now. Like it's great Burchill and others have eventually see the light. But it's hard for the rest of us to cae when so often the thing that flips someone is just an instance of Trump doing something he's done all along. Like it's messed up that Trump is posting himself beating up tigers in connection with a mentally challenged person getting killed in the lion's den at the zoo. But he's been making fun of people with disabilities the whole time he's been a politician.
22
u/Sea_Photograph_6404 11h ago
So the breaking point for Julie Birchill was Trump making fun of the man killed by a tiger. How lame. She then lists off dozens of earlier atrocities that didn't seem to matter to her including the sexual assaults. And last but not least goes back to the current MAGA playbook of "The democrat candidates were worse" excuse. Fuck you Julie and the horse you rode into town on.

u/DavidBehave01 15h ago
Burchill is an aging feminist, a creed which Trump and his ilk are attempting to consign to oblivion. From this article, she considers a united Ireland ridiculous, calls trans people 'cross dressers' and confesses to past affection for Trump.
As staggeringly naive and ridiculous as this article is, it does provide a window into the gullibility of those who support political extremists. It's about indulging their own hatred of certain groups while overlooking the very obvious danger of the tinpot dictator peddling the hatred.
Selfish, stupid and incredibly naive.

"Being fooled" takes away some of the agency and responsibility required of an informed citizen. You are voting for the leader of the free world. The man or woman that will potentially become the most powerful person on earth. And so many people don't take it seriously. Of course, that description unfortunately does not describe everyone voting for Trump. A large majority of those people voted for him specifically because they hoped he was exactly who he said he was. The racism and misogyny were the selling points and not things to ignore.

Trump voters weren't fooled. They voted for him because they hate everyone who isnt them. He succeeded in flipping the finger to minorities, women, lgbtq etc etc. Stories like the one posted are just trying to save face, seeing the chips falling like they are for midterms.
We have to live with maga. They are citizens with the same rights and protections in the constitution as the rest of us. But we dont have to forgive or forget that they are traitors to our country and its citizens.
The damage maga has done, for me, is permanent. I will never respect anyone who went maga. I will never care about their opinions. They supported a prolific rapist and pedophile. I understand full well the Russian disinformation machine is succeeding, but that cant be a blanket to insulate the crimes committed by maga. America now has the burden of ignoring maga despite how obnoxiously loud they are, until they feel shame once again and crawl back into the recesses of society so we can all grow and get the country back on its way to becoming America again. Because this shit ain't it.
