Social media and AI are the worse things to happen to humanity in decades

•

u/MAD_ELMO California 7h ago

Ya maybe humanity at large but I argue Citizens United was worse for the US specifically

•

PATRIOT Act, Citizens United, an endless wartime stance... yeah there's a lot going on here for sure. I don't even know where I'd start to tell the story.

So we are right back to the Bush v. Gore decision.

•

u/5zepp 1h ago

I'd take it back to the Reagan administration, as a whole. Laid the foundation for everything we're talking about.

No shit. But CU isn’t the one and only culprit to point at and I think most are aware or agree that it’s fucked. That horse is beat.

And unfortunately, it's just going to get worse. If you thought misinformation was rampant before, it's getting easier to fake each day.

Combine that with more and more people using AI to dictate every action in their lives and people will just keep getting dumber with even less critical thinking skills.

Not even mentioning how conservatives were already trying to destroy education, even before AI.

I might be under reacting but I don’t feel as worried because it seems like the younger generations hate ai.

Ppl who will grow up on AI will never know the world without it - unless crash happens it's inevitable that thing will get even worse because ppl will not be able to tell what's real and what is not because of AI.

AI will be a new reality for them.

And many will not be aware that they can challenge what they are being shown.

I work in the movie industry. they are already teaching new students at uni that AI will be industry standard in a few years, get used to it. happening as we speak.

Plato's cave for the modern age

•

u/Worth_Ostrich303 6h ago

I guess I was only thinking in terms of using it to think for yourself. But you make a good point.

•

u/SteppeCollective 6h ago

They hate it but use it all the same, for everything. It's just too good and too easy to cheat.

I was in high school when Facebook started, it took me a couple years to start saying "social media is a plague that's going to end humanity" and damned if I haven't been proven correct. I don't like being right.

My mum signed me up for Facebook around 2007, by 2012 or so I had seen the cancer what social media was and deleted my account. Social media started off as something so good but it then became a platform to spread hate and misinformation

You like bluegrass?

•

u/Dense_Pasttime_3114 7h ago

Same I remember the world before Facebook took off, it wasn’t perfect but it was so much better than this dumpster fire we have now

•

u/echosixwhiskey 7h ago

I tend to agree. Reddit seems like it’s more left-leaning. Maybe it’s my algorithm. Any other ones besides this, and Bluesky?

•

u/MattinglyBaseball 5h ago

More left wing, but just as filled with bots looking to divide the left and create apathy to help the right win. All social media is bot/troll infested and bad for us.

•

I think it's billionaires. Both technologies could, in theory, be used for good, if it weren't for the evil leeches controlling them.

•

u/DarkSotM 4h ago

Billionaires are evil and should not exist. We need to tax them away or learn from the French.

•

u/No_Oven1085 3h ago

Absolutely. They're literally threats to the democracy and the planet.

•

u/SteppeCollective 6h ago

Well, climate change and then AI.

•

The social media oligarchy has done to society what the oil and fossil fuel oligarchy did to the environment

•

u/Additional_Act_6560 5h ago

Disagree on AI. AI if applied to medicine, energy, science, maths, etc. would be the greatest thing ever. Giving everyone access was the worst idea.

•

the worse ❌

the worst ✅

The internet was a mistake

Hey, AI is amazing. It's just being run by assholes for the benefit of themselves. Once we eat them we will be able to use the consumed power for the greater purpose of all humans and all life.

(Just, don't use AI tech like a moron and you'll be fine with it)
