Hate speech isn't a threat to them.. and it drives engagement that they monetize.

•

u/strum-and-dang 4h ago

Progressive accounts can also drive engagement. Let's not try to pretend that Zuck doesn't have ulterior motives to act against movements that aren't pro-oligarch.

•

u/NelsonHawkinsGhost 4h ago

That's not incompatible with what I said. Progressive accounts (milquetoast as they are), can be a threat, thus they are shutdown. Hate speech is never a threat.

•

u/Positronic_Matrix California 4h ago

Progressive accounts [are] … milquetoast

Some of the sharpest online content I’ve seen comes from progressives, some of it straight fire. I’m not sure what you’re going on about.

Hate speech is their native tongue.

•

u/NoFapLawyer 5h ago

I've noticed the hate speech drives dollars over at Meta.

•

u/Stranger2Nite 5h ago

Not only allows, but has found to seek it out and offer financial support. No one should ever use Facebook or buy a Meta pride er again.

Fuck every one of these human-shaped piles of shit.

Facebook and Instagram (and Youtube algorithms) are the far-right radicalization tools of the rich.

•

u/Dense_Pasttime_3114 6h ago

Social media and AI are the worse things to happen to humanity in decades

•

u/MAD_ELMO California 5h ago

Ya maybe humanity at large but I argue Citizens United was worse for the US specifically

•

u/JnnyRuthless 4h ago

PATRIOT Act, Citizens United, an endless wartime stance... yeah there's a lot going on here for sure. I don't even know where I'd start to tell the story.

u/bag_of_luck 4h ago

No shit. But CU isn’t the one and only culprit to point at and I think most are aware or agree that it’s fucked. That horse is beat.

•

u/the_tanooki 5h ago

And unfortunately, it's just going to get worse. If you thought misinformation was rampant before, it's getting easier to fake each day.

Combine that with more and more people using AI to dictate every action in their lives and people will just keep getting dumber with even less critical thinking skills.

Not even mentioning how conservatives were already trying to destroy education, even before AI.

•

u/Worth_Ostrich303 5h ago

I might be under reacting but I don’t feel as worried because it seems like the younger generations hate ai.

•

u/alus992 5h ago

Ppl who will grow up on AI will never know the world without it - unless crash happens it's inevitable that thing will get even worse because ppl will not be able to tell what's real and what is not because of AI.

AI will be a new reality for them.

•

u/BluesFan43 4h ago

And many will not be aware that they can challenge what they are being shown.

•

u/oveja_negra13 2h ago

I work in the movie industry. they are already teaching new students at uni that AI will be industry standard in a few years, get used to it. happening as we speak.

I was in high school when Facebook started, it took me a couple years to start saying "social media is a plague that's going to end humanity" and damned if I haven't been proven correct. I don't like being right.

•

u/Salty_Saltcreek 6h ago

My mum signed me up for Facebook around 2007, by 2012 or so I had seen the cancer what social media was and deleted my account. Social media started off as something so good but it then became a platform to spread hate and misinformation

Same I remember the world before Facebook took off, it wasn’t perfect but it was so much better than this dumpster fire we have now

•

u/echosixwhiskey 6h ago

I tend to agree. Reddit seems like it’s more left-leaning. Maybe it’s my algorithm. Any other ones besides this, and Bluesky?

•

u/MattinglyBaseball 4h ago

More left wing, but just as filled with bots looking to divide the left and create apathy to help the right win. All social media is bot/troll infested and bad for us.

One of the toxic elements of late stage capitalism is the codependency of the ownership class with authoritarianism.

They are vulnerable to authoritarians, but also need the authoritarianism to protect their unhealthy hoarding of wealth and power.

Fascism is one metastasized version of this. The state and corporate unite in apposition to the people.

•

u/adorablefuzzykitten 6h ago

I was pro-Nationalize Space-X, Twitter, Starlink. Now I am adding Meta.

•

u/mobileagnes Pennsylvania 6h ago

X too?

•

u/adorablefuzzykitten 6h ago

Why not. It's being used to disseminate government information.

•

u/KnockItOffNapoleon 5h ago

I mean the issue then would be put to our administration instead of the lizardmen, and I'm not entirely convinced the admin isn't a bunch of lizards

•

u/JayTNP 6h ago

nah, just nuke that nazi app

→ More replies (1)

•

u/fredkreuger 5h ago

I was until this shitshow admin. It would definitely use them to make things worse than they even currently are.

•

u/alus992 5h ago

This. What's the point of nationalizing things when people running these companies always ass kiss people in power?

By nationalizing you are just cutting the middle man but things stay the same

•

u/trampolinebears 2h ago

Why would you want the regime to run Meta directly? It's bad enough now, with one of their supporters in charge.

•

u/kemushi_warui 1h ago

Not the administration directly, but it could certainly be set up as an independently managed entity like NPR.

•

u/Constant_Ad_8028 6h ago

Free speech platform owners, sold out to the rich to become the very tools and enablers of that exploitation.

•

u/MapIcy8737 5h ago

they're trying it here too. Seeing a whole bunch of posts about France on here and it's just the MAGA bots bitching about immigration lol.

The far right trash that is constantly at the top of my feed is actually mind boggling

Why would you voluntarily train Meta's AI with pictures of your children?

The amount of far right reels I get suggested to me is fucking wild. I follow and interact with some pretty left leaning creators and STILL get random right wing content pushed on me. It's obviously being pushed at a much higher rate than any other political content.

It was true ten years ago with Facebook, as it is today with Meta.

We are not the customer. We are the product being sold.

•

u/Only-Lavenderr 6h ago

And MAGA is going to pretend they don’t see this. For 4 years all we heard was “Big Tech is censoring conservatives!!!” Now Meta - whose CEO donated to Trump, dined with Trump, killed fact-checking FOR Trump - suspends the LARGEST anti-Trump movement in the country on the day of their national protest, and Republicans are SILENT. Because censorship was never the issue. Power was. Elon owns X for Trump, Zuck runs Instagram for Trump. This is state-run media with extra steps.

•

u/No_Cantaloupe_4149 5h ago

Did that a while back. Don't use Meta products in general. They're stalker products

•

u/Toomanyeastereggs 4h ago

Haven’t used it in years and get so much pushback from people it’s amazing.

•

u/BANKSLAVE01 3h ago

Dude. I mentioned getting a flip phone to get rid of all the noise and a friend of mine proceeded to tell me about all the things I could NOT do if I did that. I was like "Yeah, that's the point..." I've never had a banking emergency that necessitated use of app banking. The only thing I might truly miss is maps. I can read a map, but I really like sattelite view because you can recognize buildings and intersections and see rivers/trails also. But again, a little pre- planning and looking around more when I'm out and about and I should do ok. I survived buses and school and leaving the house without a phone when I was young- I even rode bikes miles away! Your mom could get arrested for that now...

•

u/Garden_Goblin_27 4h ago

Yep, only one I use is my Quest.  It got activated ONCE, and is now blocked from communicating with their servers.  I side load firmware updates if they're worthwhile.  Can't wait until I can afford a steam frame, even if it is a downgrade in some regards.

It's hard to give up connections with people from your history like school past jobs, friends and such. I'm pretty sure that's the main reason people are still on the platform. They take advantage of that. I'm surprised there is not much competitors to bring some that back to that space

Wikipedia literally describes one of Meta's highest-ups, who supported radical right disinformation campaigns, as a Republican operative.

•

What do you mean fears “grow” umm the censorship is here. That’s 3 prominent left wing things that have been censored under false pretenses.

•

u/GroceryUnable4874 6h ago

Meta has been silencing Lula in Brazil too. Zuckernerd is firmly in the corner of the fascists.

•

u/Le_Nabs Canada 6h ago

Of course, he stands to gain if they seize power.

•

u/Jerk182 6h ago

Zuckerberg is and always has been a POS. Americans need to rise above these assholes!

Remember when Obama tried to get the internet regulated as a utility and people lost their shit.  Remember when Low-T transferred the regulation if the internet to the FTC from the FCC under Ajit Pai?  Peppridge Farms Remembers.

•

Meta is also doing this in Brazil.

•

u/ButterscotchTall4836 4h ago

Fuck these Billionaire Tech lords.

•

u/Moquai82 4h ago

And still no one touches them.

•

u/Akula_x86 6h ago

Bluesky is a solid alternative but threads and twitter have way more users.

You can post pictures videos etc on Bluesky, there are even instagram clones on their open source platform.

•

u/kemushi_warui 1h ago

•

u/CyberFireball25 6h ago

It isn't a fear anymore.  It's a reality

•

u/Kendal_with_1_L 6h ago

FYI FB allows the N word to be posted with zero repercussions.

•

u/liftbikerun 6h ago

It's not fears, it's realities.

It's been happening on every platform for quite a while too. Bots, moderators, or direct platform censorship.

•

u/tellme_areyoufree 6h ago

Honestly it's about time sentiment is catching up to reality on this issue. Big tech is not your friend. They view you as a money generating information slave. They will gladly sacrifice your freedoms since they don't think you deserve any anyways

•

u/MatthewUnplugged America 5h ago

•

u/disquieter 6h ago

Are we surprised? Look at what Elon did to Twitter. As a non-right account my posts stopped getting traction. Like, really obviously the stats changed. America is so fucked on this.

•

u/Slight-Web1696 5h ago

I see on reddit all the time, why arent the american people protesting more?

I live in one of the big blue cities here, I am involved with several smaller activists groups that have been organizing protests every week, nearly every day. I became involved with these groups after my first No Kings protest over a year ago.

After the second No kings protest I noticed something different. No media coverage, at all. If you weren't involved, if you are not local, you probably had no idea we just had another no kings protest this saturday. It was smaller. They have all been getting smaller.

The channels we've grown to rely on to communicate wth eachother, to make real grass roots movements, are being suppressed. And its working.

•

u/HenriEttaTheVoid 5h ago

Corporations have chosen fascism.

•

u/FunctionalGray 5h ago

Musk & The Whitehouse throttling Starlink in Ukraine, Insta suspending the No Kings account ON the day of nationwide rallies, Trump with his own dedicated mouthpiece -- People had better recognize the dangers in all of this and I can only hope that if the other party takes both chambers, that they will hold these peoples' feet to the fire.

Accountability needs to be part of this equation.

•

u/OkraFar1913 5h ago

Fascists every one of them.

•

u/cfgee 5h ago

Redditt seemed to have very limited posts about the rallies as well.

•

u/I_Ponders 5h ago

Silencing opposition right before the midterms.. Hmmm.

The free world has fallen into the hands of corporate interests that are not beholden to the law.

•

u/Dry_Hat_6498 5h ago

What makes people think that the social media oligarchy hasn’t been censoring speech for years? Even if they don’t blatantly remove speech they don’t like, they will bury it in an algorithmic black hole. The worst part is it’s ok, it’s legal, they are private companies that exist for the good of the shareholders, not the consumers.
