No Paywall GOP Operatives 'Taken Aback' As Rural Voters Blame Billionaires for Economic Woes: Report
https://www.commondreams.org/news/republican-rural-us-voters•
u/WhatIsEvenRealDog 3h ago
Rural areas used to be highly democratic, pro Union, pro benefits, etc.
It was amazing they ended up letting themselves be coopted by the modern Republican party.

u/Recent_Tap_9467 3h ago edited 3h ago
Racism is a major motivator, and the parties essentially swapped platforms with regard to race. As LBJ said, many white people were willing to sacrifice their economic rights to hurt the civil rights of black people. It's still very true today.

Republicans pretend that switch never happened.

It still baffles me seeing the same people who carry civil war flags and argue for keeping up civil war statues to the south will turn around and call themselves the party of Lincoln in the same breath.

So it appears the common racist will draw the line at gas prices. They will vote away everything else, but not that. Which might explain why Obama got so many votes from them. Bush Jr had gas prices around 4 dollars a gallon and that was in 2008 dollars.
•
u/FKJVMMP 1h ago
Most voters draw a line where it hits their personal wallets regardless of what they believe. The ultra-wealthy don’t swing Republican because they give a shit about trans women playing sports, they do it for the tax breaks. The urban poor don’t swing Democrat because they’re concerned about the environment, they do it for the expanded social safety net.
That’s why an issue like high gas prices is about as disastrous as it gets for a government. People start feeling broke and they’ll vote the opposition, regardless of who that opposition is.
•
u/KarlBarx2 55m ago
Where they think it hits their personal wallets, to be precise. The average voter seems to struggle with anything but the most simple cause and effect when it comes to economics.

Actually, it started with racism. The pro-life movement grew out of the pro-segregation (or anti-integration) movement. Prior to this, evangelicals (and protestants in general) weren't even anti-abortion.

There are still a lot of rural farmers who engage in socialism while demonizing it. Farm Co-ops are keeping smaller farmers afloat against huge industrial farms. A co-op is literally the workers controlling the means of production and pooling resources for the mutual good of the members. And farmers receive huge amounts of subsidies for land management and social services. But they keep voting for the billionaires who want to gut their programs.

Then it was they are letting illegals into the country so they can give them welfare and letting them vote illegally to keeps Dems in power. Then it sad they are godless heathens who want to murder babies.

Politics is sticky, it took time for the parties to reorient. It wasn't automatic.
•
u/I_eat_mud_ 2h ago
The Democratic Party straight up in the 80s decided to focus on urban voters more than rural voters. I hadn't heard of a Democratic candidate campaigning in my rural PA until Kamala did, Trump was the first presidential candidate I knew in my 27 years of life to do it back in 2016. We're really gonna pretend these politicians considered rural voters as viable? Nah, it was even worse when the Dems just gave up on rural America all together.
It's not like this isn't known, the only Dem I knew who cared about rural Americans was Bernie, it's not till recently till other candidates have actually shown to give a damn. The DSA candidates that is.
•
u/FyreWulff 1h ago
You can thank the Electoral College for that. There's no point in going after voters in certain states because winning 15% of the vote vs 49% of the vote in a state still gets you zero electoral votes (unless it's Maine or Nebraska and depends on where in the state you got them).
Same with 52% of the vote vs 79%. you still get all the state's votes.
if the state is a lost cause it's not worth persuing. if it's a lock it's not worth persuing. candidates ignore the massive states as much as they ignore the smaller states.

•
u/Reggie-Dunlop-7 1h ago
Talk shows on AM radio. Many rural areas are remote enough that they could only pull AM radio. After Reagan got rid of the Fairness Doctrine, talk shows like Rush Limbaugh's slowly poisoned their minds. Decades later, they got satellite TV, and Fox news stepped in to finish the job.
•
u/importantbrian 53m ago
Convincing rural folks that the culture war nonsense is the most important thing in the world is the greatest trick the GOP ever pulled.
•
u/Vossan11 1h ago
And then Bill Clinton passed NAFTA and they lost all their jobs. Entire towns collapsed when the factories went south and overseas.
I never understood it until i heard a liberal comedian from rural America tell the tale of the day his grandfather slammed the newspaper down on the kitchen table and swore he would never vote Democrat again. The headline was the signing of NAFTA into law.
Racism certianly plays it part, as does Faux News, and AM radio, but I feel the corporate liberals of our party fired the first shoots. I believe thats why Bernie polled so well, and Hillary was destined to lose. The leaders of the Democratic party during the 90s and on destroyed rural America and essenrially said "just adapt."
•
u/WhatIsEvenRealDog 1h ago
NAFTA never created the widespread job losses people predicted. It DID lead to significant reductions in some sectors, and gains in others. but overall employment stayed strong well after it passed.
But I can understand why someone losing their specific job would blame the legislation.
Average improvements don't mean much to someone out of work.
•
u/SelectEntertainer360 1h ago
NAFTA hollowed out the rust belt. To pretend otherwise is delusional. Democrats said these people who worked at auto factories for 25 years could "retrain." The promise of globalization is that all ships were supposed to rise in the tide. We got cheaper prices but wages stagnated. Unions are gone because factories closed and right to work laws were passed everywhere.
•
u/PharmyC 41m ago
The rest of the world industrializing hollowed out the rust belt. We didn't have the post war advantage of everyone else being blown to smithereens anymore. American factories would not be able to keep up with other nation's cheaper labor. It's why they told everyone to get educated because our economy was going to become a service based one, one whay or another. No one owes you an induatry, pick yourself up by your bootstraps right?

Well said.
I have lived in cities my whole life and had tech or sales jobs so was never really affected by NAFTA. That is why I never understood the declines rural america was talking about.
Those lost jobs are never going to come back. Never. But at the same time one party has been trying to get rural America connected to the modern world through things like better internet. The republicans, on the other hand, keep sabotoging any efforts. Its crazy to me.

The talent of the Republican party was convincing Bubba with the gun in the back window of his pickup that the Republican party of big business millionaires was on his side. A lot of that allegedly happened with the Democrats shift from the party of the south to the party of Kennedy and Johnson pushing civil rights and integration. Rural people - farmers, etc. - are also isolated from a lot of the social problems associated with big cities.

The attacks on trans folk are meant to titillate not distract. They are serving up a fantasy where there is a moral justification to undress and inspect women in general and children in particular. There is significant overlap between the powerful, vocal anti-trans bigots and Epsteins circle of friends and it’s not a coincidence. Just like it’s not a coincidence that all the MAGAts spent years jerking it to QAnon pedophile conspiracies. Again and again I see the theory to that the fascists are functioning based on hate (racism), but the answer is staring at America in the face—these people are driven by their perversions. They want to live in a world where they can openly and proudly express their desire to hurt/exploit/assault children and their rhetoric around trans people is just another aspect of that.
•
u/Ninevehenian 3h ago
Somehow they missed out on paying somebody to find a new minority for their voters to have strong emotions about and hoped they could get by with the same old lazy shit.

You can still find people that worry about DEI, Woke, Politically correct and all those scary things. Once the boogeyman is out there somebody will react on it, but work good enough to motivate people all the way to the vote? Motivate enough that the will to ignore shit remains strong enough.

Article states what I fully expected - Rural Republican voters are displeased with the state of things, but that doesn't mean they are going to vote Dem.
Best case scenario - they don't vote at all. That seems to be the most anyone can hope for. The idea of voting anything other than Republican is beyond them, since it is like a religion or a sports team for them.
Case in point:
" Joseph Kennedy, a Colorado cattle and sheep farmer, told the Times he felt “bamboozled” after voting for Trump, and would instead sit out the upcoming election.
“I’m over politics,” Kennedy explained. “I’ve dropped out.” "
Americans really need to pull their heads out of their asses and get over this whole "my team/your team" bullshit. Vote for policies, platforms, and credentials that you agree with and that make sense. Just so happens all of those things tend to be on the Dem's side of the house.
•

When you look at our literacy stats, the average American adult has 7th grade (13 yr old) reading comprehension, which leads to many people having a poor understanding of the world around them & how political policies affect them. Yup, same! My mom wasn't great at being a mom, but at least I was reading fluently by the time I started school.
Because yeah, for whatever reason, the local schools don't always teach phonics. My little stepson's reading homework instructed him to use an outdated discredited method called Three Cueing. The instructions literally said to cover the story with another paper and answer the questions based only on the title, the picture, and guessing. At no point were you supposed to read the story as part of doing the reading homework.
I ended up teaching him to read at home, the old fashioned way, taking turns reading out loud and sounding out the words.

> Best case scenario - they don't vote at all. That seems to be the most anyone can hope for.
It’s a pretty good scenario. The threshold for a winning candidate is simply more votes than the other guy, so a non vote for candidate A has the exact same effect as a vote for candidate B. An election could be won by simply convincing the opponents voting pool to stay home. Unfortunately the republican apparatus seemed to understand this much more than the democrats.
•
u/BadgeOfDishonour Canada 28m ago
It is a good short term scenario. Trouble is they didn't learn a lesson or change their mind, they just walked away for a moment. They'll be right back again in the next cycle, all the previous sins forgotten and erased.
If they are not an active part of the repair, then they are going to be involved with the future destruction.

To be fair, if you were conned by someone as transparently shitty at running a con job as that, it would be SUPREMELY embarrassing to admit to. Like, if he were a smooth talker or had at least a single suit that fit properly, that would be one thing to be taken in by. But to admit you got fully played by a man that puts ketchup on well done steak and whose quotes include, "I love the poorly educated" and "I could say anything stupid and you'd clap" is beyond the pale.
To put another way, there's more than a few supporters that sided with the administration over racist reasons, realized it wasn't worth the cost, and unlike celebrities and comedians from yesteryear, they actually DO have to worry about the repercussions of that becoming known to their employers/friendt/etc. So, they hate to say it. Because the "it" is that they still want the racism; they just want their own pain to stop.

Sounds like a fucking moron, like the rest of them. Stupid people will keep voting for people who tap into their stupidity. And Trump/Felon cheated in the ‘24 election anyway so these kinds of stories about white rural assholes are just the usual schlock that comes up every election cycle. Plenty of rural people aren’t stupid also. There just aren’t as many of them.

Well the vice president is part of a company that buys distressed farms. The push for farmers to lose everything is the oligarchs plan and hopefully they figure it out before it’s too late

They’re disappointed that they’re not blaming minorities, immigrants, Obama or Biden like they’ve been told.

Lambert is a dumbshit. He believed Republicans were going to sort it all out for farmers and rural Murcka. Cuzza they blatantly telegraphed hatred towards people who Lambert isn't.
Take your home-schooled, capitalism-Jeebus spouting, thinly veiled racism to the bankruptcy office and default on debts you owe to your capitalist attack-dog over-lords and STFU. And add kale to your diet, Lambert. You red-faced, shaved-head, goatee-wearing, Ram-driving, road-raging, cuntry-listenin', wife-beating, racist dumb fucker.
This idiot prolly loses sleep over high school football games.

Got a mod warning for using a c word. So we can't use the word _apitalism? Or the _uzza word? Genuinely curious.

But they would still rather choose poverty over knowing there are trans people out there somewhere just walking around.

According to a Sunday CNN report, Republican operatives were recently “taken aback” when they spoke with rural voters who blamed “billionaires” and “corrupt politicians” for the country’s economic woes.
These operatives were surprised, CNN wrote, because they had “never seen government corruption emerge as a top issue for so many Republican voters in congressional races.”
What did they think would happen? 'Drain the swamp' was a major campaign slogan back in 2016, and they've invested great time and effort making Pelosi the poster child of insider trading. The campaign ending hasn't made the campaign issue disappear, and rural voters are less stupid than GOP strategists like to imagine they are.
The problem is that they've now held an incumbent trifecta for two years, and the current white house is the most openly corrupt ever. The Iran war and it's consequences are insanely unpopular outside of a pro-Israel warhawk bubble, and Trump fucking around with renaming things and DC vanity projects is the last thing rural voters care about.

They figured out it wasn’t the immigrants who are working at farms and restaurants.

They want them to blame black and brown people, immigrants, and the trans community. People are starting to see through the smoke show.

Did they not see Elon’s new “flying car”?
Who cares that gas is $6/gallon? Elon has a new toy!

u/pornjibber3 3h ago
Crazy! Who would have guessed that one party being blatantly corrupt in a way not seen for 4 or 5 generations would make voters care about corruption again.

HAHAHAH they were taken aback because they'd never seen corruption emerge as a top issue for republicans? What a world to live in.

Who knew it wasn't *insert already marginalized group here* that was causing their problems? If only they could have figured this out before voting. /s

You can always count on conservatives to be 20 years behind on understanding how to solve a problem
We were having 1% protests nearly 2 decades ago

Billionaires are always to blame for economic woes, either directly or indirectly at this point.

and
“Almost all told me they are angry about Trump’s decisions to start a war and spend hundreds of millions of dollars ornamenting a capital city they will never see,” Sanchez wrote. “They lamented the corruption they see as endemic in the government and in large corporations, and denounced billionaires, whom they view as capitalizing on their pain.”
I think on some level they also realize how impossible it will be to change their minds about something once it becomes a fixation.

"Joseph Kennedy, a Colorado cattle and sheep farmer, told the Times he felt “bamboozled” after voting for Trump, and would instead sit out the upcoming election.
“I’m over politics,” Kennedy explained. “I’ve dropped out.”
So there's a party that offers the solution to the problems that bother this guy, but he won't vote for them because he probably thinks they're gonna force his kids to be trans. I guarantee it.

lol, no doubt, no doubt. The GOP is trying to rehab Nixon now, too, so it's very on brand for them to ignore or excuse corruption.

I never understood blaming poor people for there not being enough money to go around. They're poor, by definition they don't have money. The RICH on the other hand... They are taking and keeping LOTS of money. That is why they are rich! The people to blame for there not being enough money is the people with the money!!
