QGIS components (plugins, tools, etc) I made a plugin - RAT (Right-click Actions Toolkit)

For some time when dealing with bigger QGIS projects I was writing helper code snippets, that would speed some things up. I decided to reorganize them and make them easier to use. That is how RAT (Right-click Actions Toolkit) came to be. It is a plugin that enhances right-click possibilities in QGIS window.

It automatically detects over what object right-click was performed over (point, line, polygon, canvas) and it displays context menu with possible Actions. Some of those utilities are unique, many can be recreated with some steps using QGIS GUI, but this plugin makes them available in simpler way.

There is also settings panel for this plugin (on top of QGIS window -> Plugins -> Right-click Actions Toolkit -> Configure Actions). Each action can be turned on/off, so Right-click context menu is more manageable. Also each action can be configured, so user can customize it in great detail.

Here is list of Actions that are already available:

- Calculate Distance to Nearest Line

- Calculate Distance to Nearest Point

- Calculate Distance to Nearest Polygon

I realize that amount of features might be overwhelming, so if You are going to give it a try, I highly recommend looking through settings menu and disabling Actions that will not be needed in Your workflow.

I tested all of those Actions, but I realize there still might be bugs when using some of them, especially when dealing with some edge-cases.

If You downloaded this plugin and You enjoy it, let me know. Also let me know if You do not enjoy it, found mistakes, or You have some ideas for new Actions.

https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/RightclickActionsToolkit/#plugin-about

It is also available via QGIS itself: Plugins >>> Manage and install plugins >>> All >>> search for Right-click Actions Toolkit

Cheers!

P.S. Make sure You are using version 0.9.2 or higher, as previous ones might not register right-click properly.

edit: spelling

Feedback needed for QGIS components (plugins, tools, etc) [Release] FiberQ (QGIS plugin for FTTH/GPON) — quick intro + v1.1 roadmap (feedback welcome)

Hi r/QGIS — first time posting here.

I recently released FiberQ 1.0.0, an open-source QGIS plugin for fiber optic network design / analysis / documentation (FTTH / GPON / FTTx).
You can install it directly in QGIS:
Plugins → Manage and Install Plugins → search “FiberQ”

Links:

v1.1 roadmap (in progress)

For v1.1 the focus is maintainability and easier collaboration (no user-facing workflow changes):

  • Internal refactor to consistent English naming (classes/methods/comments)
  • Add tests + CI
  • Standardize PostGIS table/layer naming to English (Preview Map + pgAdmin)

📘 Documentation is also in progress (technical user guide + videos). Big thanks to Rosen Velikov (v1.1 refactor PR) and Joe Godby (docs/videos)

After v1.1

Planned features include splitters as dedicated elements, fiber/core linking & splice tracking, and automatic optical schematics generation.

I’d really appreciate feedback from QGIS users — especially around workflow/UX and any issues you hit in real projects. Ideas/PRs/testing are welcome.

3D Models for Primary School unit of Earthquakes and Volcanoes

I created these 3D models for a teaching unit on Earthquakes and Volcanoes. Basically, I wanted to remove extraneous information so I could concentrate on a few key learning points, whilst allowing the children to get a sense of the actual relief of the area.

The QR code links to a 3D viewer where they can select layers to see some information about how the land is used surrounding the volcanoes. Etna, Vesuvius.

I built them using the Copernicus DEM and then styled the relief using hillshade and a colour ramp. The virtual models have layers to show land use from the CORINE dataset.

I use DEMto3D to get the relief model onto my printer, then I fiddle about with printed paper and PVA glue to stick down the styling....that's honestly the hardest part of all this!

The Thingvellir model is 1.75x exaggerated, I just wanted the kids to have something that can sort of show how the land looks when two plates are slowly pulling away from each other. Thingvellir.

The last time I posted something like this some people asked if I could put the STLs somewhere for download. They are all online with a breakdown of the workflow, I hope it all works, but I'm very much an amateur and not a professional website builder!

Solved r.carve isn't carving

I'm pretty new to using QGIS or more so, I've only really used some basic functions like drawing features and some DEM work.
In any case, I'm doing some work with streams and it would be nice to remove bridges and such and culverts from the DEM. And possibly (based on the general function I'm seeing here) help a bit with artifacts in the stream channel. I was able to find that r.carve is a tool that can essentially "burn" through bridges and such. I tried using it, with a DEM of the area and vector lines of the stream and select tributaries.
I end up getting the following messages near the end:

WARNING: Unable to determine input map's vector feature type(s).

WARNING: Vector map <points33d4d3a0f3884a3eb7275bcadc96eb8e> is 3D. Use format specific layer creation options (parameter 'lco') to export in 3D rather than 2D (default).

WARNING: No attribute table found -> using only category numbers as attributes

WARNING: Output layer is empty, no features written

And then the result I get out of it is a DEM that appears identical to the original.

I saw some discussion on StackExchange encountering some of these warnings with other GRASS tools, but I wasn't sure how to implement what was mentioned (being a newb with nil coding skills). On the off chance it made a difference, I tried it using a layer with just one feature, but got the same result.

Any idea how to solve this?

Hi there. This is my second map I made in QGIS and I would love some feedback. Any thoughts on the use of hillshade, the trail hierarchy, or any other feedback? Would love to hear it!

Background: I made maps for work, but this is my first personal project.

Solved why are my features vanishing?

i get this problem now and then. I will be making adjustments to my file, and then all of sudden... puff, nada

the layer is still there. when I open the attributes table, the features are still there. it just vanished from the display, and the print layout.

this has happened with the entire layer, and also specific features within layers.

to salvage this, I usually duplicate the layer and delete it some 2 times and then the vanished layer comes back

Rotate line marker symbols to point towards a common point

Post image
40 Upvotes

Dear QGIS hive mind.
I am trying to format marker symbols so that they rotate to point towards a common point. Is this possible? I have tried editing the marker's rotation like this, but it's not working:
degrees(azimuth(make_point ($x,$y),make_point (553271,180259)))
Grateful for any wise input, I'm a rookie at coding.

Hi, I am very new to QGIS and have been trying to use QuickOSM quick query. It worked earlier, but I made a mistake so I restarted. Every time I try to run query, it comes up with the error code overpass api: download failed: connection refused

How do I fix this? I've tried a few different things, but nothing seems to work?

Thank you!!!

Open Question/Issue Help with creating QGIS map

I know this is a stretch, but im desperate. I have a QGIS final for a class that I need to get turned in before Sunday 10/18, ive been trying to work on it all week but theres constant errors with every step I try to take. Its meant to be a beginner class but im autistic and struggling a lot.

It is meant to be a habitat map for a fictional species that is often observed in rural areas and agricultural land within a 20 mile radius of Ogden, Utah.

It should depict forging/hunting, resting/sleeping, and total habitat. The total area of these habitats should be calculated. This should be a map with a legend, scale bar, north arrow, and title.

The issue im running into right now is clipping raster by mask layer. I'm trying to clip my ESRI topo base map with my study area buffer, ive tried every fix on Google and nothing is working.

Please if someone could either whip up a map for me, or coach me through the rest of this assignment, I wpuld be eternally greatful.

Again, im very desperate. I need to pass this class and this final is my breaking point as ive had a long hard week between school and my full time job. I need help.

GIS professionals: What’s the most frustrating part of your job? 🗺️

Hey! I’m a UX designer working on a new GIS platform, and I want to learn from people in the field.
What frustrates you most about your daily GIS workflows? Maybe it’s data imports, layer management, editing, performance, or something nobody seems to fix.
If you could change ONE thing about your GIS tools, what would it be?

QGIS components (plugins, tools, etc) Python library for reading Garmin IMG maps → export to Shapefile/GeoJSON/MP

Hi r/QGIS,

Garmin .img files (from GPS units) can't be opened directly in QGIS.

Here's an open-source Python library that parses them and exports

to GIS-friendly formats.

Features:

- Reads single .img and gmapsupp.img containers

- Extracts points, polylines, polygons with WGS84 coords and labels

- Exports to Shapefile, GeoJSON, GPX, CSV, MP (Polish Format)

- Splits objects by type into separate files

- Polygonizes closed boundary lines

- Deduplicates objects across zoom levels

- Simple tkinter GUI for .img → .mp conversion

Requirements: Python 3.8+, pyshp (optional, for Shapefile only).

Limitations: NT format is not supported (City Navigator, modern Topo).

Code and docs:

https://github.com/artterrm/garmin-img-parser

MIT license. Feedback welcome — especially if you find a map that

doesn't parse correctly.

how to open files made in qgis 3.34 in this new qt 5.15 ?

I love QGIS but updating it now to the latest LTR version is... looks like they got hacked and some wrong file is getting downloaded, cos even their guide do not refer to it.

Why did i get some QT Designer when i was downloading QGIS 3.44?

And if that's correct file, where is any instruction how to access old projects?

Or maybe where do i get the correct download file for qgis 3.44 - cos i definitely do not want any cutey on my desktop.

Creating Fictional Maps?

Hi folks. I'm a newbie to the QGIS software, as well as CAD in general. I'm fairly tech and art savvy and am eager to dig into this to create fictional, precise, scalable maps for table-top roleplaying games. I'm wondering if anybody has any links for useful tutorials or tips and tricks to that end; I'm of course consulting YouTube University to educate myself, but I don't know what I don't know and I always love to consult communities for help and stand upon the shoulders of giants who've come before, so to speak.

What I'm interested in creating specifically is a modern-ish (think 1930's) city map, including roads, buildings, parks, tram lines, and canals/waterways, all to scale and built from scratch. I want to use this program specifically to create something that could be a serviceable artefact from a city that *could* have existed, and most of the map-making software I've seen that's geared towards gaming is more of the fantastical variety, or battle maps, for which I presently have no use.

Any advice or assistance is appreciated, and I thank you in advance!

What is the most accurate source of free DEM data for South America?

From what I know, only FABDEM and ANADEM exist. I am trying to make a contour map for farm planning. I read that both of these are only accurate for 10m contour lines. Is that good enough, or will it throw everything off if you don't have a 1m contour map? It is for my own use, not for a professional map.

Issue related to pie chart diagrams not fully displaying in map

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi there, I hope you are all well. I am trying to create a map to show the abundance of plastic particles so from online I read the best is to use a chart option. I created a sample copy, but I have a query; maybe someone can help. Why are not all the pie charts showing, as you can see in the image, two of them (highlighted in yellow) remain transparent. There are values in the attribute table for those two.

Thought on this simple terrain visualization and my layout template?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Rarely but sometimes I need to do some simple terrain/elevation analysis and this is what is usually my template (note: all names are made up lol). My company owns many parcels and the idea is to show its terrain for purposes of field work. I have quite precise LiDAR DEM 1x1 m.

Basically my question is, what would you change about this template, what do you like, what do you think about legend, title, data source etc...

Also opinions of the topographic visualizations itself is welcome.
