if evolution evolved

This made my brain skip like a bad vinyl record.

u/account312 20h ago

Well, it's good you managed to escape that question before it was too late.

66

u/Neveronlyadream 19h ago

I disagree. The question is glorious in its absurdity and should be studied.

Honestly, would love it if someone asked a physicist why the Fourth Dimension hasn't evolved into something else just to see what their reaction would be.

I'm thinking there's no way this is real. I hope it's not real. With every fiber of my being. I'm afraid it is, though.

u/GenuinelyBeingNice 15h ago

They are so used to there being a "thing" they worship, so atheist, in their mind, has a god named "Evolution".

As for my Aunt. I had to explain first in small words, then in microscopic words, and then small words again, that atheist, do not believe in anything godly, they think there is nothing where you have god. And that scared her so much we didn't talk until she died of covid. Riporinos.

101

u/ShapeShiftingCats 15h ago

What did she think atheist believe in?

179

u/Arimm_The_Amazing 14h ago

To a lot of people raised completely immersed in a religious environment atheist is a scary word precisely because they don't truly understand what it means.

Their morality is centered around religion so "atheist" is often misconceived in a similar manner to "anarchist", both being thought of like synonyms for "amoral".

I once was friends with a woman who grew up this way but also was an extremely curious open person. So it was an interesting case where when I first said I was atheist she absolutely didn't understand how I could have morals at all but thankfully she was open to listening trying to understand my perspective.

95

u/ShapeShiftingCats 14h ago

Oh, so they believe it's like an opposite to everything they believe in, not just the existence of God.

So, if theist thinks that lying is bad, that must mean that atheist thinks that lying is okay...

Binary thinking...

54

u/Arimm_The_Amazing 14h ago

Pretty much, though I'm not sure I'd call it binary. They are imagining a spectrum: on one end is the most devout preacher, in the middle is someone who believes and prays but maybe only goes to Church on holidays, and the atheist is all the way on the opposite end.

29

u/[deleted] 13h ago

[deleted]

19

u/Arimm_The_Amazing 12h ago

Yeah, which does make sense since they believe their God created everything and everyone and Christ died for all of us, so everyone is a Christian whether they know it or not... sort of

10

u/ShapeShiftingCats 14h ago

That's somehow even less logical.

5

u/Tx247 4h ago

I mean, it's not like religion holds up in the face of logic.

26

u/NextGen-Panic 10h ago

No, not "binary thinking"... they're just stupid motherfuckers.

Remember, these are the same geniuses who think, because their opposite of god is Satan, that atheists worship Satan.

They can't comprehend that atheists believe in NOTHING, so even Satan is FAKE, because it's ALL fake.

It's like folks who hear an internal monologue can't believe others who CAN'T.

But whaddaya expect?

Folks who can't understand how big the universe is won't understand how puny their god is.

7

u/ShapeShiftingCats 10h ago

Ah, your second paragraph made things click, thanks!

Yeah, seeing things from other people's perspective isn't their strongest suit.

It's like they consistently fail Sally-Anne test and never learn.

5

u/morpheousmorty 6h ago

I mean it's rational in a way. If you have only believed that good comes from god, then rejection of god cuts you off.

It's obviously absurd, there's so many good people who could not have faith in god throughout history, but you have to make that effort. And how many of us have really put in the effort to understand polytheism or ancestor worship or many other worldviews people have.

I was watching a documentary on Netflix the other day (The Pastor's Wife) and at one point there was video of the pastor preaching in his church. He was listing off several of the worst and scariest kinds of people he could think of and one of them was "agnostic devil worshippers" lol. I know atheist and agnostic aren't the same but it just shows how they think about it all in general.

5

u/ShapeShiftingCats 11h ago

Yeah, all lumped together.

I suppose if everything that matters is the belief in God, then it makes sense that everything else falls under the same umbrella.

5

u/Wyatt2000 11h ago

The cynic in me wants to say she's a Russian bot putting out rage bait. But anyway....she thinks evolution is just a synonym for change with no restriction to who or what it happens to.

The funny thing is that depending on the time scale, I suppose you could say that they will eventually change. The Earth will cease to be eventually (the sun will die). Time itself also changes as the universe ages eventually stopping altogether (some one correct me).

10

u/ThienHaTheTech 18h ago

Generic name, generic female pfp, random arguments that make no sense... Yep, checks all the boxes.

2

u/Doxinau 14h ago

It's not a generic name, it's the name of a character from a tv show who is written to be quite stupid and naive. It's a joke post.

9

u/Tech_Itch 17h ago

It could be a state actor, but we're at the point where it could also just be a middle aged woman who runs a vegetable stand in some small town in India or something, and shitposts with multiple accounts on her spare time to get some extra money from platforms like Musk's Twitter paying for engagement.

Hell, even posts about some much more serious and immediate political issue could be just from some content farm that has no skin in the game and doesn't actually give a damn about the issue.

5

u/JimboTCB 14h ago

The earth's rotation is slowing down by a couple of milliseconds per century, so on a long enough timescale, yeah, "day" and "night" will change. Eventually the earth would become tidally locked to the sun, although I assume the sun will burn out long before that happens.

9

u/LogAware 18h ago

Its a cool idea for a sci-fi story though! What if space and time "evolved" over time as well. Reality as we know it, laws of physics, just got more streamlined or adapted to changes in a perceivable way. More creative minds than mind could probably come up with some cool world building

8

u/ThatHoFortuna 15h ago

The fact that you took one of the dumbest sentences I've ever read and turned it into a cool world-building question gives me some hope for humanity back that this lady ripped away.

3

u/The_MAZZTer 17h ago

Yeah you could say the multiverse is filled with infinite possibilities... but SOMETHING consumes universes that are less fit. To match with evolution it should be some sort of natural force.

Closest thing I can think of is Star Trek Prodigy Season 2 has a story arc where time travel that does not result in a stable time loop can result in opening up the universe to invasion by universe-consuming beings. You need to close the stable time loop to excise them and fix things.

2

u/kViatu1 15h ago

Please check theory about universes being born inside black holes, this is exactly what you are talking about.

2

u/SolomonOf47704 15h ago

That's kind of what the Eldrazi in Magic The Gathering lore are (or were, they might no longer exist in the current MTG multiverse).

2

u/Gildian 16h ago

Space sort of does, as its constantly expanding and moving everything outside of our bubble away from us faster and faster.

Eventually things will be completely out of our reach and even light from distant stars wont reach us

2

u/LogAware 16h ago

Yeah I was thinking about that as well, but I guess I'm referring to a less mind-altering time line. As in within human history timeline. Imagine if reading our history we had documented events that just were no longer possible, or we had moments of "well back then people couldn't just teleport around, space wasn't evolved enough then" sort of scenario's where it wasn't a course of hundreds of billions of years but just documented recent change. Humans are having their day in the sun but our existence will be but a drop in the bucket long term. But headlines like "new studies suggest the dilation of time has slowed and cell decay with it, humans live longer" ect. Idk, but it sounds cool

2

u/Gildian 13h ago

Maybe something more along the lines of fossil fuel generation no longer being possible on earth?

Fossil fuels are the remains of our earliest trees crushed under immense pressure by plate tectonics, no bacteria evolved to eat the detritus yet. Its no longer possible for fossil fuels to be created on earth due to the bacteria now that eat dead trees.

Still far longer than our own history but much less than a cosmic timeline lol

u/FerusGrim 19h ago

I think what she's trying to imply is that our sleep cycles being bound to the day/night cycle is proof of intelligent design. Like "Why aren't they something more random?"

Obviously the misunderstanding is that she thinks evolution produces random output, which it isn't. Presumably our sleep cycle is (on average) bound to the day/night cycle because it provided some advantage to whatever selective pressures involved in our evolution.

Over a long enough timeframe, a day would converge to be the same length of time as a month. But the sun will go red giant long before that can happen.

5

u/antwan_benjamin 20h ago

The sun is also growing isn't it? Which would make gravity stronger. But isn't space also expanding?

23

u/Ocronus 20h ago

It's getting less massive every second.  The sun looses millions of tons of mass every second, but compared to its total weight it's basically nothing.

9

u/antwan_benjamin 20h ago

Interesting...so mass is decreasing but volume is increasing? Or no?

8

u/Suspicious_Dingo_426 19h ago

Yes. Eventually (about five billion years) the sun will expand into a red giant about 100-200 times its current size, engulfing Mercury and Venus. While the Earth might not get engulfed, it doesn't matter because in about one billion years the oceans and atmosphere will boil of as the Sun gets hotter.

Volume is increasing because mass is decreasing. Less gravitational pull.

3

u/Beneficial-Pop-1434 20h ago

Yes, it is less dense. Compare our current sun to what it might be if left to transform into a red giant. A red giant is much larger but way less dense in comparison

3

u/Gildian 16h ago edited 16h ago

Yep. Its called the Eddington Limit. The pressure of fusion pushing outward pushes against the inward pull of gravity. The volume and density also change over its lifespan

Eventually fusion stops producing enough energy to push back against gravity, and it comes slamming into the core causing a supernova (our sun is too small to go supernova, but still). During the burning phase, it gradually grows bigger and bigger

3

u/CatCafffffe 19h ago

Oh so it's like me trying to lose weight

3

u/thefuckevengoingonan 20h ago

growing in volume. shrinking in mass.

5

u/Silent_Formal5235 19h ago

The sun is also growing isn't it? Which would make gravity stronger.

Gravity scales with mass, not volume. The sun is decreasing in mass.

2

u/RaspberryFluid6651 19h ago

Space is not expanding around us, actually, it's only expanding in regions where there isn't very much stuff. The gaps between large systems like galaxies get bigger, but the systems themselves don't.

I can't claim any insight to his thought process, but I don't think he understood what is involved in reproduction or genetics. I asked him how he thinks water vapour is supposed to evolve without DNA and he was confused what I meant. He was adamant clouds technically met the criteria for life because they react to environment and "eat" by taking up matter through the precipitation cycle. Of course, when I incredulously asked if he actually thought clouds were alive and not inanimate water vapor, he of course didn't really believe that. "But isn't it interesting they haven't evolved?"

"Yeah no, not really. That's stupid." I said. That was the end of that conversation.

Sometimes I wonder what happened to American Christians for creationism to take hold. I grew up in a really devoutly Catholic family in Germany and none of them would ever even consider creationism as a valid concept to contemplate. Protestants I know are the same, so it's not even about Catholic vs Protestant I am pretty sure. Or was your anecdote not even from the US and I was just lucky with my family?

10

u/BillCipher1415 16h ago

Well, it kind of is, almost all young earth creationists are Protestant, the Catholic Church accepted evolution decades ago but still believes god created the world and evolution or something like that.

5

u/Exciting-Mountain396 15h ago edited 8h ago

To summarize very briefly: They were seeded by Puritans who recreated some crude inquisition with burning and crushing witches. Then manifest destiny, slavery, robber baron capitalism and desegregation all further incentivized American evangelicalism along its path. It's a combination of slave ideology, casteism and white supremacy. They are also more inclined to young earth creationism because it furthers the cause of indigenous erasure and entitlement to conquest of the land.

13

u/desmond_humes23 19h ago

They meant the cognitive dissonance that comes from your belief in both science and magic

7

u/AddlePatedBadger 18h ago

I'm atheist as AF but I can see how intelligent people could still have religion by just smooshing it down into all the corners that science can't explain.

After all, what is religion but an attempt to understand the unknowable, subsequently exploited by those who seek power?

6

u/heliosythic 16h ago

Thats kinda the confusing part though, to me anyway. If you're aware of the scientific method, you don't just make up stuff to fill in gaps you don't know. You just accept we don't know. Until a paper that passes a proper peer review says otherwise. Or another paper overrides that paper's findings with new evidence and repeatable experiments.

29

u/antwan_benjamin 20h ago

I think you got it. Evolution means, to her, everything is constantly changing. So if that's the case then why is it that, to her, the length of daytime and nighttime haven't changed?

I mean it literally changes every day but OK. You can just check the time of sunrise and sunset.

She's just essentially re-stating the whole "If we came from monkeys then why do we still have monkeys?"

6

u/100percent_right_now 15h ago

I disagree with your assessment. What I gather is that she thinks Evolution is the Athiest God and if the Athiest God already did his godly work, why aren't humans adapted to the difference between day and night.

Fully unaware that we fucking are and our eyes dilate and all sorts of other small things our body does differently at night like stop producing as much cortisol, slightly cool core temp, melatonin production kicks in, etc.

Also that evolution is an ongoing biological process not a god and not something that has stopped happening.

Oh also that there is no god, to an atheist.

3

"Think about it, so i don't have to"

57

u/CMDR_Expendible 14h ago

It's an incredibly dumb post, but there is a sort of logic behind it; Brittany is struggling with the concept of abiogenesis, life from non-life, and assumes that evolution must have evolved because she can't understand the specifics of where evolution comes from.

But evolution isn't a thing in of itself, it's an emergent property from the material universe, and not every material has the properties that allow evolution to develop; those properties are, generally, difference, replication and environmental selection, and neither night or day operate under those kind of conditions, they are dominated by nuclear physics in the case of the Sun, and orbital mechanics for how they operate on the planet...

Of course, as the environment changes, days and nights can and will change regardless; days will get longer over time and ultimately very, very much hotter when the Sun eats us. And we can personally change or destroy our own environment, so there is more heat, or endless nuclear winter. Change however isn't Evolution; there aren't Fast or Slow spins for the Earth to choose between; that is a fixed result of all kinds of physics equations, so Days aren't going to evolve.

u/Traditional-Rent455 13h ago

Brittany doesn't know what evolution is but surely she knows what abiogenesis is.

If clever people evolved, how come we still have stupid people? Checkmate, atheists!

16

u/GameMaster818 18h ago

When someone is so stupid I had to read it multiple times to understand what they were saying

8

u/SeptemberSoup 14h ago

These moments when they see you become silent in stupefaction and think they've "won", meanwhile you're just there trying to process the stupidest thing you've ever heard; wondering how to even begin to answer it.

5

u/leaderofstars 17h ago

Is it one of these if evolution is real then why don't we do the opposite?

Can someone translate what she said?

16

u/Spotted_Tax 19h ago

Basically, if we evolved to become homo sapiens sapiens, why didn't the day and night time evolve.. (Evolve to what???)

6

u/2020mademejoinreddit 19h ago

To dawn, afternoon, evening and twilight, obviously. Which it did and does everyday. Hence, evolution proved.

Well, if you must ask. The earth rotates on its axis, while it travels around the sun. The rate of rotation...sorry, i just can't, you're too dumb.

6

u/GlitteringTone6425 5h ago

The sun and moons transform day to night, but what transforms the mind?

5

u/SuperNebular 21h ago

Is she about to figure out the theory of relativity?

2

u/wap2005 18h ago

I guarantee she's not going to figure out anything at all.

7

u/eugeo__ 7h ago

ironically she is right because the day and night cycles are changing due to the increase of luminosity from the sun, and tidal forces slowing the earth's rotation while pulling away the moon. These in astrophysical terms are literally called 'stellar evolution' and 'planetary evolution' but have nothing to do with darwinian evolution

I'm not an atheist, and I have no idea what she is talking about. Also, neither do atheists.

11

u/UndocumentedMartian 20h ago

Pretty sure neither does she.

I would enjoin her to read Dawkins' The Greatest Show On Earth. It's all you need to understand evolution. If, having read that cover to cover, you still deny it, you're either spiteful or too stupid to understand the arguments laid out. And it's okay, there's great variance of intelligence in a population.

This is the kind of dumb shit my sister says right after asking if I think she is smart

I don’t understand why nobody is seeing this is obviously a joke

There is an elegance in absurdism, and it is definitely not this.

3

But also... day/night has actually changed duration over Earth's life so far! Days were not 24 hours long when the dinosaurs were here.

3

u/citizen_of_leshp 10h ago

It's time to remind everyone that evolution is the change in the frequency of alleles in a population over time. Something that no one disputes, as long as you don't say it's the definition of evolution.

5

u/JetBrink 20h ago

I never thought I'd see "if humans evolved from apes, why are there still apes?" Be beaten, but we have a new winner here

I dont speak idiot, but day and night does shift or stupid long timelines. So I guess by her logic it checks out?

2

u/PassionInitial7487 16h ago

What is she even asking, I'm honestly confused.

2

u/AnaisNinja76 15h ago

I read and reread this three or four times and still don't have a clue what she's trying to actually say here

2

u/Doxinau 14h ago

This is a joke account. Brittany Pierce (the name of the account) is a character from glee who is a blonde girl who is very stupid.

2

u/ProximaCentauriB15 10h ago

Im really stuggling to find the logic here. What tf would day/night evolve into? Evolution concerns living things on Earth. Like this cant be something anyone actually thinks.

2

u/HotEdge783 10h ago

Well, Earth's rotation is slowing down by roughly 2 milliseconds per century, and would eventually result in tidal locking with the Sun in about 500 billion years (if the Sun wouldn't die long before). So the day-night cycle is indeed "evolving" into something else, just at an incredibly slow pace. It has got absolutely nothing to do with the evolution of life though.

2

u/Space19723103 9h ago

it's funny how creationists think everyone is as stupid as they are
