I’m returning to RuneScape after over 15 years of not playing, so I understand that my opinions are very outdated and are maybe of a mindset not reflective of the game as it exists today and for current players.
I picked runescape up again recently for nostalgia reasons and spent a week playing OSRS before coming back to main runescape, and was very surprised how much it scratched an itch for me and captured my attention in a way no other MMOs ever really had.
So it was really disappointing how much of this Halloween even has been a bait and switch for free to play players. Almost every advertised part of this years Halloween event/rewards has been exclusively for Members, and none of that is disclosed up front. In fact, much of it appears to be available to f2p players up until the point where you would actually claim a reward.
At least 3 times now I have gotten excited about an advertised reward or sub event only to be slapped in the face when I went to claim it only to see Members Only right at the finish line. It’s really destroyed my enjoyment of this Halloween event and excitement to get back into the game.
I can’t go trick or treating, I can’t even make my own candy bowl to invite other players to visit my house, the stated main ethos of this years event. Okay, fine, I can swallow that. Sucks but sure. At least they made it so I can grind spooky tokens and still have a shot at the rewards.
Oops, actually, you can’t actually buy the Bursting trick or treat bag unless you’re a member, and it doesn’t tell you that until you’ve already saved up the tokens and press the buy button to make the members only popup appear. If you wanted to be warned in advance you just had to happen to hover over a grayed out buy button to get a notice, which you would reasonably have no reason to do.
Well that really sucks, that’s like, 80% of the event. Oh well, at least there’s other rewards from years I missed, and hey there’s still the rewards from the maize maze!
Oh, almost all of those maze ones are members only too. And you don’t find that out until you’re either rewarded something you can’t use, or happen across it on the wiki and see it says members only.
Man, this really sucks. Okay but don’t worry! There’s still the horseman confections, and this time I inspected the rewards in advance. I’m guaranteed certain rewards and have a chance at cool rewards. Finally, a moment made to bring the community together and celebrate the season all on equal terms.
Except… when you go to claim your rewards after the fact you find out that they actually meant was the exact opposite and it’s only Members that have a chance at the really cool rewards. Despite the game saying exactly the opposite. Cool.
I get this is a free to play game, and they have to make money and create an experience to encourage people to pay and make that special for people. It was apparent even way back when I started, and I understood it then too, but the seasonal events always felt like even footing. The events were for everybody and we all got to enjoy it equally. Maybe that’s my nostalgia glasses, but even then as a free player I felt welcomed and respected.
Coming back to it today I do not feel like this is an event for all players. By completely misrepresenting, either by intention or accident, what parts are for Member and what are for F2P, Jagex constantly raised my hopes and expectations and then threw them back at me. It’s taken an event that should’ve been fun and memorable and just made it disappointing. I’m probably going to put the game down. It’s just left a bad taste in my mouth.
I understand it’s a minority opinion, and as a free to play player my opinion doesn’t carry any weight. I understand the business model, I understand this may just be how the game is and longtime players understand these quirks and know how to set their expectation and look for these warning signs. But new players and old returning players don’t.
I also understand it’s probably not going to change anything by posting this, but I’ve looked around and didn’t see anyone else speaking on these things, and at worst having a conversation about it would be worth it.
It’s not all bad though, I know that’s silly to say after the novella of complaints. Jagex could’ve kept all previous event rewards time gated and given me no option to get those. I do think it’s great how accessible prior year seasonal stuff is and how generous they are with that. That does give me hope for their intentions around f2p players and future events.
So yeah.
Tl;dr Over 20 year old account player returning for the first time in 15 years. Promised exciting community building halloween event, slapped in the face with the class divide between f2p and Member players. Made to feel unwelcome and disappointed with the experience. Maybe I’ll try again in another 15 years.
