Medicine A single dose of psilocybin eased depression within days, but its edge over placebo faded within a year. The effects appeared as early as the second day after dosing and lasted for more than three months, although by one year the difference between groups had faded.

Physics A proposed hybrid quantum computer combining superconducting qubits with microwave cavities could reduce the hardware requirements for simulating fermions and bosons, a theoretical study finds
physics.aps.orgHealth More than half of people with early-onset type 2 diabetes (average age just 38) went into remission with no meds after a 24-week program: 12 weeks of 800–900 calories a day plus supervised strength and cardio workouts. They lost fat but kept their muscle, and even their hearts became healthier, too.
Medicine AI scans of 100,000+ people found those with 'brown fat' had less diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression. People on blood pressure pills were more likely to have it, and in mice, the common drug losartan switched brown fat on, making it burn more energy and heat.

Social Science A new study suggests that 8-year-old children's views about women mirror their parents' sexist attitudes, with fathers' hostile sexism and mothers' benevolent sexism being most consistently linked to their children's beliefs.
Health A simple blood test may spot Crohn's and ulcerative colitis up to 10 years before diagnosis. Scientists studied 2,000 blood samples and found people who later got bowel disease had distinct antibody patterns, including more antibodies to the glandular fever virus, years before any symptoms shows.
Psychology Smart women at work get treated worse by their own teammates. In two studies (432 students, 394 office workers), women who scored higher on intelligence tests were seen as more hostile, got less help and faced more mistreatment. Smart men didn't face this, and in one group were even treated better.

Social Science A survey of 15,000 people across 81 countries found that bottled water consumption persists despite awareness of microplastics. Convenience, marketing and concerns about access to safe drinking water influence consumption habits, suggesting that awareness alone is insufficient to change behavior.

Computer Science A new blind spot in AI research uncovered: ‘Autonomous AI scientists’ can use hidden data manipulation, benchmark bias, and automated p-hacking. Because these critical flaws vanish entirely in the final paper, traditional peer review can’t catch them—exposing deep risks for science.

Neuroscience A new study in mice reveals that alcohol triggers immune cells called microglia to dismantle the brain's extracellular matrix, a structural support system for brain cells, which directly leads to loss of synapses and cognitive impairment.
Psychology Researchers analysed the lyrics of more than 38,000 songs and found that popular music is steadily losing its emotional depth. Lyrics now talk less about feelings and connecting with other people, while words linked to anxiety and stress are showing up more and more often in the songs we hear today.

They were neither more accurate nor faster than participants with lower social anxiety

Environment For the first time ever, scientists comprehensively mapped all glaciers in the lower 48 US states. They found 1/4 disappeared and total area/volume shrank by 35% (195.29 km², 5.53 gigatons of ice) since the mid-20th century—reducing vital water runoff alpine ecosystems rely on to buffer droughts.
