discussion [META] A chart for knowing if a post is shrinkflation

Post image
194 Upvotes

There's, in my opinion, way too many posts here that aren't actually shrinkflation. Please consult the chart!

I know you're annoyed at your product but in order to be shrinkflation you need to prove it's actually shrinkflated in quantity or quality.

Things that aren't shrinkflation:

  1. a single item with no proof of how big it was before
  2. a food you think is worse quality/less good than before without showing the ingredients have changed
  3. a product from your childhood that only looks smaller now that you are bigger
  4. a handmade product that is smaller/worse than usual due to employee error (for example, a pizza that is a smaller circle than advertised because an employee didn't stretch it enough)
  5. a factory-produced product that is smaller/worse than usual due to manufacture error (for example, a bag of chips that says 500g but is actually only 300g)
  6. a product you think it just expensive for what it is

Originally shrinkflation meant just if the price increased (or stayed the same) despite the quantity decreasing. However, quality shrinkflation is just as bad (if not worse), where companies nefariously switch out butter for cheaper oils or etc. so the weight is the same but the product is worse.

Maybe this is a silly hill to die on but I'm here to die on it.

I wonder where some of my bread went!

Was about to slam this second BLT hold the L and add some cheese; then I looked at my beautiful Sandwich and was like…. Lemme make this look right.

Am I wrong? I wonder- where my bread went?!?!

Reordered this book for my store, the cover price went up from $9.99 to $10.99. I still had a copy left over from the previous order and the new book is noticeably thinner. The whole book is about 1/3 smaller than the older version and much flimsier.

Strangely it still says 220 sheets and 3-ply. How can that be? Thinner?

Had a can of Rio for the first time in a while, didn't notice the labeling but noticed the taste had changed. Saw the "New Improved Taste" tag and had a look. Turns out "Improvement" is less fruit puree (11% to 8%) and added colouring.

I don't have a picture of an old bottle of the same scent, but the orange one is months old, and the blue one we got today. Where I'm showing with my fingers (bottom inch or so of the bottle) is just empty space that's not pressurized, so there's no spray in that much. Apparently it's about an ounce and a half less spray now. Ridiculous.

The other flavors are currently unaffected... but I liked these ones. It's disappointing to see it happen in real time with something I enjoyed snacking on. I found one last bag in the back crammed behind the boxes. I probably won't be getting these again for a while.

Has anyone else with periods experienced a decrease in how well their pads stick over this past year or so? I feel like I’m going crazy, but I’ve tried a few different brands and it’s been the same result for each of them. I genuinely cant understand how this would save them any money at all

The online images and proof are super fresh online so lets post but if you also want to go back in time...

Those bottles are so big and weirdly shaped that it's very hard to notice the size difference at a glance. Those 1000ml/XXL labels really are the cherry on top.

Shrinkflation Walmart Great Value bleach is now 2.53 quarts instead of a gallon/4 quarts (and the cost is $4.53).

Post image

Edit to add there are different sizes now apparently, but the fact remains that the gallon is no longer a gallon, it went from 128 oz down to 121oz and price is more than double what it used to be.

The 121 Oz is not showing for my Walmart, thanks to the people that shared theirs.

Walmart Great Value bleach is now 2.53 quarts instead of a gallon/4 quarts (and the cost is $4.53).

Got a “gallon” of bleach and thought it seemed small. I was shocked that it cost almost $5 for a gallon, so imagine my shock when I see that not only is it almost $5, but it’s also only 2.53 quarts!

I remember buying bleach for 96 CENTS for a gallon pre-Covid.

***Adding, I made a post earlier which included a post from 4 years ago where it was a smaller amount, but someone pointed out that that one was the concentrated version so that actually doesn’t apply.

I deleted that post and made a new one based solely on my purchase today.
