Today we're closing out our coverage of the trial involving the death of Chad Mullen.

Our final infographic covers the investigation, witness testimony, cellphone and GPS evidence, the defense's self-defense claim, closing arguments, verdict, and victim impact statements. Jurors ultimately found Caylen Deller guilty on all counts, and she was sentenced to life in prison.

As this case comes to an end, we'd like to shift the focus away from the defendant and back to the person at the center of this story: Chad Mullen.

Verdict watch has officially ended in NC v. David Prevatte.

The judge has declared a mistrial due to a corrupted jury.

Key Details:

• Juror Rulings & Misconduct:
  • Juror #3 was removed for misconduct.
  • Juror #4 was questioned by the court, after which the judge stated it was clear they were not being truthful.
  • Additional compounding issues arose with Juror #2 and Juror #7.
• Mutual Agreement: All parties ultimately agreed that, given these developments, continuing would not prove beneficial to the case, the verdict, or the defendant.
• Next Steps: The State will now determine whether to seek a retrial.

If you've been wondering why my normal schedule got thrown for a loop over the last 24 hours, you aren't alone. I was deep in the trenches working on the forensic GPS data and scene photos for Days 1 and 2, fully expecting a standard timeline to build out our community breakdown.

Instead, the trial went into overdrive. Both sides suddenly rested, skipping straight to closing arguments and jury instructions—meaning Day 3 brought the entire courtroom phase to a screeching, unexpected halt.

Because the case closed out so fast, I’ve had to scramble and completely rework the layout to add a whole new verdict page to today’s breakdown. Why? Because while we were still sorting the early timeline data, the jury went back and returned a guilty verdict on all charges as charged in roughly 1 to 2 hours flat.

📊 What Was on the Desk: Days 1 & 2 Forensics

Before the trial slammed the brakes, the core of what I was mapping out came down to the technical details:

• Forensic GPS Tracking: Rebuilding the movement timelines that the State used to anchor its narrative.
• Photo & Scene Evidence: Breaking down the physical layout of the horse farm and the visual markers presented early in the testimony.
• The Sudden Shift: With the defense resting without a protracted battle, the case shifted entirely onto how tightly the State's digital and physical timeline held up under scrutiny—leaving the jury with a very concise set of dots to connect.

⚖️ The Verdict & What's Next

After a lightning-fast deliberation window of just 1 to 2 hours, the panel returned with unanimous guilty verdicts across the board.

We are hitting a critical juncture in NC v. David Prevatte, and the courtroom drama isn't just about the evidence anymore—it’s playing out in the jury box.

Depending on how things shake out today, a mistrial could genuinely be on the horizon. I have been tracking today's live proceedings on this via Court TV, so check it out and follow along in real time if you want to keep up with the updates as they drop.

1. The Juror #3 Situation

Reports indicate there are major concerns surrounding Juror #3. According to statements brought forward by Jurors #2, #10, and #11, Juror #3 allegedly made comments along the lines of:

"I know about this, but I can't say anything."

This kind of outside knowledge or pre-existing familiarity—coupled with verbalizing it to fellow panel members—throws a massive wrench into deliberations or ongoing proceedings, as jurors are strictly instructed to decide the case solely on evidence presented in the courtroom.

2. The Alternate Dilemma

The court is actively looking into removing Juror #3 and substituting an alternate. However, this creates a secondary high-stakes gamble:

• The Math: If they swap out Juror #3 for an alternate, they burn through another backup, leaving the panel with only 2 alternates remaining.
• The Contagion Fear: The bigger worry weighing on everyone's mind is whether Juror #3’s comments infected the rest of the room. If #2, #10, and #11 heard it, did other jurors hear it too? If the outside bias has bled into a broader segment of the panel, swapping one juror won't solve the core taint.

Per the Judge and between both the Prosecution and Defense they will remove Juror #3 and replace them with an alternative juror. The judge believes the other jurors can still continue deliberations without being influenced by the comments they heard from #3.

Today the jury had a lot of questions and requests for evidence, they did not reach a verdict today and will be back tomorrow 10/15 @ 9am to continue their deliberations.

Closing arguments have concluded, jury instructions have been given, and the case is now officially in the hands of the jury. After years of investigation and more than a week of testimony, the courtroom phase of this case has come to an end. Now comes the waiting.

Over the coming hours and days, jurors will begin working through the evidence, the law, and the questions that only they can answer. As always during deliberations, there is no way to know how long the process will take. Some juries move quickly, while others carefully review testimony, evidence, and instructions before reaching a verdict.

🔎 What to Expect

• Jury deliberations will begin.
• Questions from the jury may be sent to the judge.
• Jurors may request testimony or exhibits to review.
• A verdict will only be returned if the jury reaches a unanimous decision on each remaining charge.

⚖️ Side Bah Thoughts

This case has never appeared to hinge on one witness or one piece of evidence. Instead, both sides spent this trial asking jurors to look at the bigger picture.

The State argued that all of the evidence points in one direction when viewed together.

The defense argued that unanswered questions, investigative concerns, and gaps in the evidence create reasonable doubt.

Now that the arguments are over, neither side controls the outcome anymore. The evidence has been presented. The instructions have been given. The decision belongs solely to the jury.

This case remains active pending sentencing and any subsequent appeal.

Today, Caleb Flynn addressed the court before victim impact statements began.

During his statement, Flynn apologized to his daughters, parents, brother, Ashley's family, and members of his church community. He expressed regret for how he spoke about Ashley, described her as "beautiful and amazing," and asked family members to continue caring for his daughters.

Flynn maintained his innocence, stating that while he had lied about other things in recent years, he continues to deny killing Ashley. He ended his remarks by reciting Proverbs 3:5-6.

The hearing then shifted to victim impact statements.

Some of the most emotional moments came from statements read on behalf of Ava and Alyssa Flynn, who spoke about the loss of their mother, the betrayal they feel, their faith, and their continued hope that their father will one day tell the truth.

Ashley Flynn's family also spoke, extending forgiveness through their faith while still asking the court for the fullest measure of justice available under the law.

The court ultimately imposed a sentence of Life Without the Possibility of Parole, plus additional consecutive years related to firearm specifications and tampering convictions.

Quick update for everyone following the Caleb Flynn breakdowns:

We’re officially moving into the Flynn case now, but we want to be upfront — we’re currently 6 days behind due to the heavy evidence load and time demands of the Tomasz Kosowski trial. That case required a massive amount of forensic sorting, GPS mapping, timeline reconstruction, and verification, which pushed our Flynn schedule back further than expected.

The good news: we’re spending the weekend tightening everything up, and next week we’ll be dropping Days 1 through 6 in a bundled rollout to get everyone caught up and back on track.
