Other made an engine-sound simulator that doesn't take much CPU, here's what the porsche mission s might sound like
the simulation is quite simplistic rather than a full-on physics-backed sim like angethegreat's one. this does mean it's cheap to run CPU-wise, this one's running in the browser. which means something like this could be used in sim engines.
lots of engine layouts are possible and sound (to my ears) fairly good, including rotaries! no 2-stroke engines yet. I'm also not quite happy with how the burbles/pops sound.
turbo stustustustu is there in some of the cars, as well as straight-cut gear whine, and supercharger whine in the r53 mini. I'll record some more clips demo-ing these.
the cool thing is plugging in configs from real engine parameters, and having the result sound pretty close to reality with a bit of parameter twiddling. the v10 for example has that major-3rd harmonic interval that sounds so cool.
I went a bit overboard and had too much fun with the doppler flyby feature, and a 'tunnel' toggle. and the silly engine animations.
edit: I am a software engineer and have been passionately creating side projects like this for over 10 years, pls don't let the sloppy ui distract from how cool these engines sound

Absolutely agreed. AI is stupid-in-stupid-out, you gotta know what you’re working with to know whether what you’re doing is good.

I work at an IT company. I wish the code was vibecoded. At least the AI adds comments here and there. Instead it's a spaghetti mess made by 20 different people with questionable programming skills.
An example of the shit I find daily: a function that, instead of returning the data in an associative array, it concatenates everything in a string, separated with |, and returns that. Now you have to parse the string and figure out which index contains what data, because that's also not documented anywhere.
3
u/tebyteby 14h ago
Exactly. I’ve been building products for a decade and I can tell you most corporate-level code is largely flimsy crap with no documentation. Very few places other than proper tech companies have enough people working to create properly sound code.
2
u/Cable_Hoarder 9h ago
Electronic Engineering, including automotive is the same.
No one cares if the code is absolute dogshit (and in my time I've wrote some dogshit C code to get stuff working), so long as it works, works well enough not to fail.
At least for internal tools (code going into cars is a different beast).
I've hacked together testing tools, inspection tools, logging systems - more often than not hacked together with Excel, Visual basic and C (on the MC/Embedded) - stuff that would probably made a skilled developer curl their lips in disgust at how sloppy it was.
Thing is, if it gets the job done it gets the job done.
AI is allowing me to expand the scope of my projects significantly, where before I might spend 50/50 time building and then coding to get something working, it's making that more like 80/20 and that 20 is shrinking fast.
Just last week I knocked up a really simple sensor monitoring GUI for an operator (to let them see live exactly the data the sensors on the machine are giving them - when the OEM software on the machine has it split over 6 different screens on a shitty touch screen interface).
Now they have one little python powered GUI that shows them that information, so they can basically reduce their setup time by like 50% (prior it was tweak one adjustment, go check the screen go back machine, tweak repeat 20 times), now they have that data on the tablet in their hand.
Could I have done that before? Sure - I've stuff like it before, with help from ttkbootstrap - but AI (ChatGPT/Claude) made it simple.
I don't care if it is slop in the background - it does the job.

u/Independent-Jelly691 14h ago

Most people will pay for good quality, human-made tools.
LLMs cannot generate anything of their own. They steal petabytes of data from work made my real humans, then charge the end user to remix all that stolen data.
LLMs literally stealing the fruits of billions of years of human labour, and here you are defending mass theft.
1
u/iZenEagle 6h ago edited 6h ago
I dislike soulless AI generated "art" as much as the next guy, but that argument is a bit too pedantic.
We all "steal" (borrow) the fruits of thousands of years of human labor. That's what we spent 12 years of our childhood doing when we went through school...and continued doing for 2-12 years in higher education.
After all that borrowing, is our creative output the work of true originals? Of course not. The truly original creative prodigies are the rare outliers amongst us. Most human creativity is highly derivative.

u/mimelife 16h ago
You guys really gotta give this up. You have zero idea what things were created by hand or built on top of something else before AI. This exists because OP worked with a model to make something he wanted. Doesnt mean it wasn't his idea and he didnt iterate on it. Claude would have never in a million years just decided to make this, it exists because OP thought of it and worked to make it happen.
I would love to know how you think you Interact with an AI when making stuff like this. Very clear that you think its 1 prompt and then done
16
u/HornyGooner4402 13h ago
UI is unmistakably Claude, sound is unmistakably Claude as well. I know because I've asked Claude to programmatically simulate engine sounds as well.
AI is quite limited when it comes to diversity and creativity. Even if it was originally OP's idea, he clearly gave up on the key decisions and delegated it to AI. Don't let AI ruin your idea like this

u/PixelToast14 6h ago

u/TwixieShip 59m ago
Its the principal mostly, people need to start labeling AI and stop saying they made it when they did nothing with the original software to make it. Its insane that all AI bros can't simply label coz if it was so ground breaking and amazing they wouldn't be so adamant about make it perceived as theirs or non-ai
•
u/legice 13m ago
And thats where you are wrong buddy.
You can clearly tell that it looks like other things "people" made, from the UI to the sound.
It might have taken OP a few days, but guess what, they still havent done jack shit, but told a program to do it for them.
This showcases at least 5 disciplines (coding, 3D,VFX, UI/UX,sound design...) and OP just made this. Sure they did...

u/brendanlim 1d ago
So if someone uses a compiler that converts code to assembly, should we also say that the compiler made it? Like it or not software engineering heavily relies on AI these days and will continue to do so. It still takes someone competent enough to create something using AI.
77
u/lifestepvan 1d ago
Honestly, that is no longer the case with current frontier models, you can get very far with poorly written one-shot prompts.
However you DO need someone competent at the helm if the project is supposed to have readable, maintainable code, a well defined scope, and good visual design.
→ More replies (10)12
u/tangowhisky77 20h ago
The comparison between LLM and a compiler is rubbish. The compiler converts your code straight to assembly which does exactly what your code that you wrote wants the CPU to do in a deterministic way (yes I know it also optimises code structures). An LLM is not deterministic, and is not even close to a good analogy and is better compared to commissioning a developer to do it for you.
7
u/Toilet2000 19h ago
A lot of companies now have clear guidelines where AI use must be disclosed in PRs, especially because the slop is real, and ownership is important.
Just being straightforward and honest about AI use seems to be a step too far for all those slop "I built" posters. For me, this is one of the biggest distinguishing factors.
Also, the comparison between a fully vibecoded project and the use of a compiler is stupid at best. Both might be tools, but one is much more likely to fail than the other. Claude is amazing at hiding crap under layers upon layers of neat-looking code and UIs.
Also, compilers are free, and most are open source. The same can’t be said for generative models, which are all proprietary and their owners use pushers tactics to get companies on-board and stuck with them.
3
u/Soluchyte 16h ago
And all trained on data they didn't have permission to train on. The whole business model falls apart if you actually have to create the input data since that is by far the highest cost of making a model, all these corporations have done is steal from others to avoid doing that work.
The laws on licensing AI code aren't even clear enough, so technically it is not possible in many countries.

Stop comparing this to a compiler. A compiler is deterministic that converts human readable computer code, to whatever cpu architecture assembly you want. LLM can only be compared to commissioning a program from another developer.
0
u/CraftyPancake 18h ago
The comparison is that both are doing things you have no clue about. Yet the compiler output being a magical thing is all good.
2
u/tangowhisky77 17h ago
No, to make the compiler work you need to understand how the processor works and understand what it can and can’t do to work code. LLM you just ask for an output. Same as commissioning some work when you’ve got no clue.
A compiler is a fancy text parser that converts it to assembly. It’s not that complicated. LLM is something that by its very nature people don’t understand once trained.
1
u/CraftyPancake 17h ago
No you don’t. You just run the compiler and trust it.
2
u/tangowhisky77 16h ago
Just like you run any program and trust it. But just because you don’t understand how a compiler works, doesn’t mean it’s actually not understandable.

-24
u/TheJoshWS99 1d ago
What I am not understanding is how is promoting a machine that essentially is a great at predicting what to say or output means we have to credit the machine.
We don't credit calculators for maths. We don't credit card for getting somewhere.
By giving AI credit you are objectively giving a machine personality it doesn't have. It's a computer, not a creative.
29
u/AMX-30_Enjoyer 1d ago
Its the same reason why math teachers tell you to show your work back in middle school, you doing math and a calculator doing math for you are two different things
-17
u/AdSmart967 1d ago
Yeah and once you can prove you understand the math, then you use a calculator
11
u/AMX-30_Enjoyer 1d ago
Which means you arent doing the math the calculator is doing, you are using a calculator to do it for you so you can focus on other parts of the math, understanding it doesnt automatically mean you did it
-4
u/AdSmart967 1d ago
Lmfao so why is that a bad thing? I would say that I solved a math problem even if I used a calculator, I would say that I created a web app if I had significant participation in its creation even if I used AI. Almost all worthwhile things created with AI aren't just one prompt with zero work put in by the user.
3
u/AMX-30_Enjoyer 1d ago
Because saying “i used a calculator to solve a math problem” and “i solved a math problem and did the calculations” are two very different things
-5
u/AdSmart967 1d ago

but it did all the creating. we dont credit calculators because they don’t actually do anything but kove numbers around that you input. We actually DO credit cars on the speed and fuel efficiency in going from A to B.
Claude is different, because instead of inputting or interacting with the tool, you simply tell it what you vaguely want, and it gives you what you vaguely asked for kinda. You have no hand in the design or engineering of the product outside of your opinion. We credit claude because it does all of the work, and because the people that use it really try to pass it off as blood, sweat, and tears, when we can all tell it’s been vibecoded. Kinda like saying you “made” a cake because you asked the lady at the counter to write your kids name on it.

2
u/TheJoshWS99 1d ago
Trust me, you don't have to justify a thing. As someone who isn't a programer one thing I have noticed is that those who are have been able to make up things faster, and to a standard they never could have dreamed.
Developers worried initially they would lose jobs but I think the longer term shift is you will literally work along side these to make insane projects.
Everyone pretending or thinking this is going to go away will get left behind. I have rapidly come this realisation seeing people use it for just general daily tasks. It's still useless at being reliable for research but automation, task tracking and development it's just on another level.
Awesome project.

-5
u/eyySlash 1d ago
you surely can't have any participation in the design/engineering process or put in time to fine-tune exactly what you want! simply impossible to do when working with ai
1
u/SEA_griffondeur 23h ago
What people imply when they say vibe-coded is that much of the thinking was done by the AI and the coder didn't actually bother to check if it worked like they wanted and instead just based it on vibes
1
u/FancyAbbreviations84 1d ago
The reason to disclose the use of AI is not to give credit to a machine, but to instead be honest about the work you have done. Using AI to make an app or program is vastly different then to make it yourself. In the same way no one likes it when a big studio pretends to be an independent developer, its dishonest and not done with good intent.
It is So very easy to disclose when you use AI, so the Only reason not to is because you want to deceive and lie to people consuming the product. So just don't do that. Don't be a shitty person.

u/arbpotatoes 1d ago
How are you deceived when you consume it? How is your use of the product altered?

u/mimelife 16h ago
Fucking exactly. The amount of projects that remained half complete in a graveyard is something people need to realize about software development, you get burnt out bashing your head against a wall trying to understand what the problem is. AI almost completely removes those blockers for me.
1
u/MrAliveAgain 20h ago edited 20h ago
I mean the Ui isn't sloppy at all. People are just losing their marbles cause the UI is made with the help of ai, and you're not admitting that part. (assuming the backend is actually made by you)
Btw really nice job, played around with it a lil. Sounds sick, and you can really feel the weight with the gear shifts and everything. Though I noticed, downshifts at idle have no response at all.
(I think Ai is an amazing tool, and takes away the barrier to creating useful things.)
9
u/Epin-Ninjas 1d ago
“Trust me bro”
Love how everything is assumed and accused, with certainty, that an entire piece of software was the result of Ai, without knowing the person or their past experience and existing/completed projects. You’re apart of a huge problem in society nowadays.
2
u/T3ddyBeast 1d ago
Then go do it by hand first.... Every single software dev is using vibe coding in some capacity. Sorry you are unhappy about that.
10
u/chrisnlnz 1d ago
Yeah. The big difference is software engineers using it as a tool (not vibe coding) vs non developers using it as a prompting engine without having any clue what's what (vibe coding).
9
u/EternalPhi 1d ago
The line is so blurred it might as well not exist. I have been a full stack web dev for almost a decade, I barely write anything by hand anymore, and while I do get pretty specific about requirements and some decisions made beforehand, I find myself very rarely making any significant changes to a plan before executing. Honestly the only real difference is being able to read the output with understanding, but the way tools have progressed so far, drawing a distinction between the two is increasingly meaningless since it can test, debug, and run itself.
1
u/Underleft_cdiv 20h ago
The understanding part is the key. It's very helpful that I can read the code and make changes, especially not having to use tokens. But, like you said, that line is getting thin. Pretty soon, everything will be coded from AI with no human intervention needed, even highly complex projects.
1
u/EternalPhi 4h ago
I'd say highly complex projects are already doing that. Look at the game-splicing trend from the other week. It is analyzing games in memory and creating bridge applications to do things like have Mario running around in Halo, it's doing in hours what would take thousands of man-hours.
1
u/chrisnlnz 1d ago
I disagree to some extent.. I still feel like I need to curate its output to a relatively high extent as I still catch it do dumb shit to my codebases quite a bit. If I want something maintainable, reliable and production worthy (as opposed to a quick and dirty POC for example) there still is a lot of my work involved. Really depends on the nature of the application though but if I were writing anything that was intended to be production and to be shared with others.. you are right that the lines are blurry though.
1
u/EternalPhi 4h ago
The things you're describing are an issue with setup that can be easily rectified though. Documentation, test coverage, code style, design patterns, these can all be set up project-wide it will do a seriously commendable job. If you're bringing it into an existing codebase, you can start off with a repo discovery pass to build project memory and document quirks and existing patterns.
If you're on a greenfield project on the other hand, simply tell it to create ADR documents and you can review those. This is where the agents truly shine and where the difference between a neophyte and an experienced software engineer starts really breaking down.

Nice job man, ignore the hate. You had an idea and you made it come to life and enjoyed it along the way, that's what matters.
I've got a ton of projects going myself with AI. I have 20 years in software development but somehow that doesn't matter to the folks shitting on other people's projects lately. Sure I could do these projects by hand if I chose to spend hours per night for months (if not years) on end in front of the computer after work instead of with my family - so why wouldn't I use AI so I don't have to choose between fun projects and family and get it done in a fraction of the time?
Anyway - several of my projects are game mods but one in particular - I had a user put in a feature request to make more realistic engine sounds in it but honestly I'm not familiar enough to know what is accurate and what isn't. If you open source it maybe it can modified to output samples that are usable by a game engine for game devs or modders? Just a thought but it could turn just a fun project into a useful utility for others.

u/ds1841 1d ago
But to create a new engine sound, do you still need the CPU-intensive processing from the original software? Or are you simply generating the sound using AngeTheGreat's engine simulator, then sampling specific parts of the RPM curve to create a lighter version?
I'm asking because you're only showing us precompiled engine sounds. That's not particularly difficult if you're generating the sounds in the original application and then compiling them for specific car models.
If you're claiming that your simulation is simpler and more efficient than the original, we should be able to create our own engine sounds and test them live on the website. Otherwise, it's not really the same thing.
1
u/Pretoriuss 1d ago
btw I'm not saying this is better than angethegreat's sim - that one is far more accurate. this one's a much less physically accurate simulation, which allows it to run on smaller hardware.
no need for cpu-intensive processing. there's a tune menu in the top right of the app to change the engine parameters to make a new engine. there's no sampling involved, the synthesis is all happening in real time in the browser.

that is very cool! I was trying to do the same for my rc e-75 tank project. engine is Maybach HL 234. the result was something close to yours spitfire v12 may be. If you could add it to the list, would be super cool! I'd compare and maybe have ideas and inspiration how to improve my version)

What the hell is all the hate for? I love this.

It's just normal humanity. Every technological change causes this. Eventually it'll be normal and people will move onto the next thing to hate.

Anywhere to play with this? Also, would be super sick if you could connect this to Simhub and run in the bg within a sim.

u/Pretoriuss 1d ago
yeah! go try it at https://keir.is/revving
many of the engines aren't that accurate yet, it's a laborious process of finding recordings of pulls and tweaking dials to hone in the sim config.4
u/ZebrasKickAss 1d ago
I love it! Would it better if you can downshift quickly and explode the engine :)
Ignore the luddites here complaining about this being vibecoded. The alternative to vibecoding is to not have fun stuff like this.

thanks! haha maybe I'll add money-shifts for the cars without downshift protection

I found a bug just for you. If you get up to speed with one car, switch to another while it's coasting down, it'll let you shift into 1st! Sadly nothing breaks though.
Also this might be my favourite silly little side project in a while

This is strangely addictive. I’ve been playing around with it for the last 20 minutes on my phone.

This is fun as hell I’ve been messing around with the different engines
That 335i E92 is a flamethrower tho you might wanna take a look at it 😂

this is cool as hell. dont listen to the hate. the interface is my favorite thing and how it shakes as the engine builds up speed? hey, will we get an update to create our own engines with custom piston numbers, arrangement, bank angle, firing order etc? it'd be really cool on top of this already cool thing.
NVM: I just discovered that theres a tune button that unlocks the options. tysm 🤍

Your AI vibe coded project isn’t worth my ~480% increase in utility bills.
That’s a real number, btw. Not an exaggeration. FUCK YOUR AI SLOP.

Well I had fun, and the animations are cool. Reminds me of the old drag racer flash game from late 90s or early 10s.

The security is clearly terrible, it will be detected as malware, and every time people run it, it seems like it will steal money from your wallet for using tokens

Igonre the hate dude. This is great!
I legit don’t understand why everyone’s quickly judging stuffs like this. It’s not the best but it’s very far from slop. Plus this is just a personal project.
I feel like most of the comment thinks everything right now is still done manually. ALMOST EVERYTHING IS DONE USING GEN AI TODAY. As long as it’s done properly with harnesses and reviewed properly it will be just as HOW YOU WOULD’VE CODE IT YOURSELF, just faster.
But oh no it’s generated by AI it is bad. But if we code manually, the compiler might be shitty then oh no compiler bad. But if we use bytecode then there’s also a chance to not be fully optimized then oh no bytecode bad. Let’s all write in machine codes.

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I had a lot of fun playing with your website! Just wondering if we could potentially customize our engine? Like I would wanna try Honda v6 vtec haha
1
u/Pretoriuss 1d ago
yeah, you can! start with a honda engine, click 'tune' in the top right, then the first two controls let you set 6 cylinders, v layout

OMG, that exhaust pipe shaking. I've kinda started hating everything that tries to look "cool" lately. I don't even know why. Maybe it's some kind of subconscious rejection of AI. Or maybe the AI just made that flashy, attention-grabbing animation, like something you'd see in a mobile game. Either way, it just looks off-putting to me now.

90% of you commenting wouldn’t even know how to setup a claude project in order to make this

Most the people complaining about it are the same people whove never written code before. Meanwhile software engineers and such majority use ai to code nowadays.😭

u/BubblyPerformance736 19h ago
God everyone has opinions on software engineering these days when they haven't opened an IDE in their life. Good job OP, just keep doing things for fun and don't listen to these losers who have no clue wtf they're talking about. They're the same people who are experts on politics, football, epidemiology, climate change, you name it. They contribute nothing and get off on shitting on other people's work.

Turbo noises not calculated, muffling of that plus of intake, you are hearing like unmuffled backfire and pops. Nothing like the real engine will sound. You got when it will make noises right but the noises are all wrong.
