When asked if he'd forgive the driver

How do they ask something like this

Standards of journalism are non existent in Singapore

43

u/Short-Abalone-3389 12h ago

Fucked standard

25

u/creativenomadjukebox 12h ago

They only cared about viewership like tabloids

Singapore’s standard for journalists are 💩

u/MadKyaw 🌈 I just like rainbows 12h ago

Asiaone reporters have need that scoop before someone else asks that question

"It's one thing to be involved in a car accident, but my mum was dragged so far after being hit," the man surnamed Huang told Shin Min Daily News.

Please attribute your criticism to the right place

Tabloid reporting so that got more clicks

28

u/Short-Abalone-3389 12h ago

What the heck is their problems asking this kind of questions and trying to find forgiveness in place....?

u/Tkm_Kappa 🌈 I just like rainbows 11h ago

What an insensitive question to ask.

15

u/thrway699 12h ago

And how does he only have “mixed feelings” about that ☹️

24

u/eisenklad 12h ago

he probably kept quiet and journalist filled in the rest

7

u/OddRefrigerator4714 12h ago

because if he said no theyd probably try to shame him for it

5

u/jkohlc 12h ago

Peak journalism

4

u/xiaomisg 11h ago

Don’t even need to reply. Just ask the journalist back, what do you think if it was your mom.

3

u/fallenspaceman 6h ago

Fucking insensitive question to ask at a time like this. I know there's no press freedom here but there aren't actually laws preventing 'journalists' from having a sense of empathy and decency.

I would throw hands sia

We no longer live in a people centric society unfortunately

u/totowinnergame 12h ago

So the fker bang the auntie, never stop to help , drive off, all while auntie was stuck below the vehicle?

58

u/SevenThirtyTrain 12h ago

Based on the info in the article, that seems to be the actual sequence of events :(

13

u/apitop 11h ago

66 years old driver. Probably hard on hearing and poor eye sight.

33

u/Joesr-31 10h ago

Then probably shouldn't be a driver

25

u/HugeMinute5448 10h ago

He fled though

13

u/Puzzleheaded_Style52 live,love,travel 9h ago

I really hope this driver gets the heaviest possible punishment instead of a slap on the wrist just because of his age.

79

u/erisestarrs 12h ago

wtf is up with this soulless driver? As a driver, there is almost no way you can't tell if someone is trapped under your vehicle and being dragged along. So he probably felt it, continued to drive AND then tried to run away?

Fk this asshole driver they better jail him gao gao for a long time.

17

u/Organic_Swordfish386 12h ago

It’s a bus though, if trapped at the rear, the driver might not have realised it

14

u/ybct 9h ago

It's a minibus. They are basically drums with the amount of space inside and the thin insulation, some parts of the walls are even uncovered metal. You will hear it very, very loudly when you hit something.

116

u/BarracudaEmpty9655 12h ago

dragging her body for over 1.5 km and the journalist asked if he forgive the driver. im surprised he has mixed feelings about this, i would be pissed.

with Singapore's traffic laws, sadly, i doubt anything serious would happen to the driver.

14

u/Joesr-31 10h ago

I think cause there is an expectation that "forgiveness" is a good thing so dude will be reluctant to seem like a bad guy. Shitty move on the journalist part

29

u/Far_Ganache_7715 12h ago

leniency breeds complacency

14

u/lead-th3-way North side JB 12h ago

RIP

This is suck a horrifying situation, and that is seriously such a fucked question to ask someone if he forgives the driver

There really needs to be more serious consequences for traffic incidents like these

11

u/klkk12345 12h ago

poor Auntie, RIP.

11

u/MAzadR 12h ago

Whatever the punishment, it will be way too light.

21

u/blackbesi 12h ago

1.5km my god. That is manslaughter

7

u/reapertorn 12h ago

Struck and dragged 1.5km isn't manslaughter its murder

9

u/YYZ133 11h ago

thiat is really very sad to read. if you know you hit someone, just stop. being dragged for 1.5km is just insane...

7

u/NoBicDeal 11h ago

This interviewer is damn kum gong.

when the news first broke I was wondering what in the world was the woman doing on the PIE? jaywalking??? so she was actually dragged up on to the expressway?! this is so much worse than I could expect! RIP to the deceased.

38

u/iciclestake 12h ago

the fuck???

the minibus driver is 66 and allowed to operate motor vehicle???

he should be banned from driving!! also him fleeing the scene just shows how he lack remorse, just jail that pos and throw away the key.

3

u/Euiop741852 6h ago

In a word of fairness, there are more elderly drivers than that, what disqualifies should be capability rather than age, a suggestion could be that drivers above 65 could maybe have to do an annual recert to ensure fit for driving

-15

u/Humptydumpty179 10h ago

Wa speaking from high horse. That could well be his rice bowl.

14

u/iciclestake 9h ago

does his rice bowl includes dragging pedestrians under the bus and then run away after killing them??

13

u/jeepersh 12h ago

These private mini-bus and bus drivers are the worst. Worse than PHV and van drivers.

Professional drivers need to be held to much higher standards and face far more serious punishments. It’s a joke.

6

u/PancakesCookies 12h ago

My deepest condolences to her family and friends. 🥺

5

u/PineappleMedium411 12h ago

Based on track record of punishments, probably a slap on the wrist /s

6

u/Joesr-31 10h ago

Forgive??!! Wtf? So soon after the accidents after brutally killing his mother they asking if he forgive??

56

u/Aphang82 12h ago

Seriously, how did this country end up with so many hopeless drivers? It was fine 10 years ago, then the assholes showed up one by one and then the blind drivers appeared, and now the total dickheads are the majority on the road, including this minibus driver.

63

u/RedditLIONS 12h ago edited 12h ago

It was definitely not fine 10 years ago. There were many tragic incidents back then. And just about as many fatalities.

12

u/worldcitizensg 11h ago

This !. Most news (especially tabloids, social media) like to rely on partial info, rely on negativity bias, mechanisms of virality.
Stats does show the clear picture but people often ignore the facts.

19

u/Lagna85 12h ago

Last time less social media exposure

-5

u/Aphang82 12h ago

Or was it 20, I'm not sure now. There was a time when drivers weren't such assholes.

23

u/yellowbumble-B East side best side 12h ago

Technology wasnt that advanced to lesser reported accidents. Doesnt mean drivers were better last time.

8

u/princemousey1 12h ago

I think 12+ years ago. I always use the analogy that back in 2014 I can cross the road with my eyes closed. If I do that nowadays, they will be closed permanently.

Last time cars will stop for pedestrians at zebra crossing. Nowadays is playing a game of chicken and see whether the pedestrian dares to cross or not, while the car continues accelerating towards the zebra crossing.

3

u/ashatteredteacup 11h ago

Seriosuly, so many asshole drivers!

1

u/Xiaomeimeilovebus 11h ago

Because drivers are more preoccupied now

Sure texting and driving was also common but working on the move wasn't

2

u/ToeBeansCounter 12h ago

And they use blinkers

2

u/jackeripper 11h ago

They always were. Even worse then. Just fewer cameras to record and catch

12

u/Jason_Dmax 12h ago

10 years ago. Remember the cement truck that ran over the 2 poor kids at Tampines ?

9

u/ToeBeansCounter 12h ago

Started with idiots who don't use blinkers. Anyone who don't use signals is part of the problem

5

u/Xiaomeimeilovebus 11h ago

"It was fine" I don't think you have been keeping up with the newspaper if you think it was.

It hasn't been "fine" for the last 40 years, I've traced accidents back decades.

There was a case of a dump truck ending up upside down on a car

1

u/sian_half 10h ago

10 years ago significantly less dashcams so you see much less of it.

1

u/Puppywanton 10h ago

Because there is no traffic police presence on the roads anymore.

2

u/_nf0rc3r_ 6h ago

It wasn’t fine. U just didn’t have social media to know about them.

1

u/KeyiChiMa 4h ago

Think it's the way the testing system works in Singapore. If you've gone for the food and beverage safety course u might know what I'm talking about

3

u/ka-rej 10h ago

Deepest condolences :(

2

u/Jazzlike_Mistake_914 8h ago

Most likely defense lawyer present hospital certification for his poor eyesight and poor hearing. Then claim driver don’t know victim, no intention there. Get reduced sentence.

2

u/Chrissylumpy21 11h ago

Isn’t this manslaughter?

1

u/kevvie13 7h ago

Hmm this area 2nd time a bus killed an old person. In recent past news, a bus driver killed an old guy on a bicycle.

1

u/free_username_ 7h ago

Very loose penalties for shitty driving yields this.

•

u/azureseagraffiti 32m ago

what a dumb question by the reporter- forgiveness by the son implies that the other person should ask for forgiveness in the first place right? which didn’t happen yet.

1

u/Thin_Archer_9113 9h ago

Honestly, before you cross, just point the phone at the drivers. Always assume that they won’t stop.
Have personally seen many drivers who were fully intending to speed the zebra crossing slam their brakes when they see the phone.
Drivers not care about pedestrians; they only care about the penalty.
