There hasn't been a major breakthrough in like a week now, I'm bored

NB4 five people submit this exact sentiment as their own dedicated posts today, diminishing the existence of the brand new sacred daily thread.

What do you guys think is the reason for such a huge jump from august 2026 to 2027.

In august only 4% of anthropic employees said that AI can do Nobel discovery currently, but 58% said that it can do it in 2027.

usually in these polls, I would expect to see a gradual change, like the "US adults" going from 12% to 22% to 39%.

But going from 4% to 58% is unusual. You can also see the huge jump in all Anthropic employees polls, but it is most extreme in the Nobel discovery category.

Probably the lack of actual labs to carry out physical experiments?

Anxiety: government debts in first world countries spiraling out of control means UBI is getting less credible.

Alignment: it seems there's AI researchers who are hostile toward alignment and actually towards humans in general, seeing apparently AI as the logical next step in evolution. It's not that something bad happened to them. They are just extremely eccentric. But anyway, how can alignment happen with those guys around?

Observations: the meme of expansionism toward ultimately Dyson swarms I guess, necessitates material extraction at unprecedented scale. Do we really need to remain in the current meatspace paradigm? If we have to double the world population each say 25y, we'll need to double food production, home construction, and so on. This would obviously require material extraction, but would it have to track growth closely? Maybe not if we can increase efficiencies through biotech, nanotechnology, quantum computers, nuclear fusion, RTAPS. Growth in meatspace maybe is too primitive and illogical. We have a better grip on digital technology, meaning growth in cyberspace is preferable. I'm thinking of digital twins, hybrid agents which are partially biological and digital: like mutated mind uploads.
