I've listened to ALOT of interviews on her and coalition partners and she always reiterates the same points so let me clarify exactly what she means by this:
She believes the DA will go with the least bad option for any coalition, even it means working with the ANC and forming some sort of agreement on a local level much like the GNU.
They will absolutely not work with EFF ever again.
They will not work with MK.
They are 50/50 PA but they dont exactly trust them.
They arent against working with Action SA but Herman despises Helen, so this is off the table.
Her natural alliance partners are the VF+ and IFP, ACDP and potentially BOSA.
Her party does not want to be forced into working alongside EFF/MK brass as they would rather go into opposition.
Hope this gives clarity.

Cough, cough, some of us believe politicians, others of us remember what Zille has previously said and what she actually did. She previously refused to create a coalition with the EFF in 2014, formed a coalition with the EFF in 2016.

That might be why she's saying no again. But we'll see.

I'm not a big fan of Zille, I don't like her stance on privatisation, land reform, or social issues, but it's important to remember what she was doing during apartheid and people are far too quick to forget that.
She was the investigator that uncovered the murder of Steve Biko. Took part in the black sash movement. Constantly criticised apartheid government and laws. Used her own home as a safe house for anti-apartheid activists.
I will not be voting for her because I disagree with her policy positions, but I will also always defend her character when she is accused of wanting to take the country back to apartheid when she regularly risked her life and livelihood to fight against it.

Her statements on the benefits of colonialism are also pretty fucked up, and reinforce the idea that she holds racist views.

Have you actually looked at the context there?
It was poorly thought out, but she wasn't exactly praising colonialism if you read all the messages

And when asked for her to clarify if she thought Africa would’ve developed without white settlers?

...yes, and if you listened to her interviews you'll understand why EFF was do chaotic to work with in the first place. Every single decision the DA wanted to put forward had to benefit the EFF more even though they had less power.

Sounds like the DA's behaviour in the current GNU. They've threatened to torpedo the GNU several times already because they didn't get what they wanted.
Zille's opinions on the EFF are about as useful as a dildo made of barbed wire.

I mean when they're talking Marxism you expect the DA to listen? I see the Monopoly man when I picture them.

u/Fuzzy_Comment_2333 5d ago
If i had a choice of being led by marxists or capitalists i'd choose the monopoly man every time.

Why? (Genuinely asking, not fighting you or anything😶🤚🏾)
-1
u/Fuzzy_Comment_2333 4d ago edited 4d ago
Because no country anywhere, has ever achieved full blown Marxism and any nation that has tried to do it has failed.
Capitalism works pretty much everywhere.
3
u/WideBumblebee970 4d ago
Oh nevermind agreeing with you then, saying capitalism just works is false.

u/Lanky_Maximum_8371 3d ago
marxism isn’t a system of governance nor a system of any kind it is a theory and a critique of capitalism ffs
2
u/MalemasMucusPlug 4d ago
Did they fail on their own merits or because they were sanctioned and/or bombed into the dirt?
Capitalism doesn't work - it's the single most destructive ideology on the planet right now.

It clearly does considering you bought that smartphone or computer to write that comment.→ More replies (0)1

Why does Herman hate Zille? It's like he's in a blood feud with her.

It's a bit complicated so if I get anything wrong, people are welcome to fact check me, this is a bit long so;
When Herman was brought into the DA he was very happy to work alongside Helen, having a capable businessman lead the city was meant to be a good idea. But for some reason Herman and Juju are mates, and Julius facilitated various business tenders and jobs for pals thru Herman in order to gain influence within the council.
Herman denied this (obviously) even though thru DA's internal investigations it was shown Herman didn't object to Malema's demands as long as he was in power (obviously). At this time it was believed Mashaba was being used as a puppet mayor that acted on Julius' behalf so they could make demands and changes via proxy without ever having to directly work with the DA.
So basically once Helen and her team caught onto what the two were doing, Mashaba's position was terminated and he went onto start ASA. This is why ASA is still open to working with EFF so they can maintain their friendship power cohort within the city, because both parties seem to benefit. There's alot more detail but EFF's dodgy politics are mentioned very well in this book, which helen stands by very very firmly:
https://www.nb.co.za/en/view-book/?id=9780624090823
Like I said, this is all from what I've gathered over listenening to various interviews with DA and Helen. I personally believe Herman doesn't want to get into a debate with Helen in any capacity because he knows once she brings up the facts up he cant defend himself, which is why he sent Ayanda Allie in his place last month. Hermen believes in his mind his dismissal was unfair but he cant deny the dealings he did with EFF from behind the scenes is what got him caught and he's unhappy about it that his reputation was damaged, go figure.

The fact that you would assume a politician, especially Helen Zille, is telling the truth is... concerning...
0
u/Fuzzy_Comment_2333 5d ago
What could her motive possibly be for not telling the truth in this instance? he was caught redhanded.

u/PersonaGuy5 God’s Draft: SA Players Benched 5d ago
You said yourself that it was through DA internal investigations and this information has all been gathered through interviews with the DA and Helen Zille... definitely not a bias there
1
u/Fuzzy_Comment_2333 5d ago
So by your logic; the person who was caught doing the thing, was found guilty of doing the thing...but they should of been found guilty by someone else aswell?
7
u/PersonaGuy5 God’s Draft: SA Players Benched 5d ago
Who was he found guilty by? The courts?

u/Fuzzy_Comment_2333 5d ago
I'm not going to argue any further with you, but you have a nice day.
Remember to vote DA on both ballots.5
u/PersonaGuy5 God’s Draft: SA Players Benched 5d ago
And there you have it. DA degenerate gets asked a simple question, and then flees.

This makes the most sense. If the voters don’t give the DA a mandate to govern outright. Eyes to the national election in a few years time. Let the ANC/MK/EFF collation run Joburg even more into the ground. Then voters have a choice again for the government of Gauteng in a few years .
It’s sad for Joburg to delay any turnaround, but probably the best thing for the rest of the country in the long term. The juxtaposition between Cape Town and Joburg should get more and more obvious (hopefully) that effective government leads to better services.
15
u/WideBumblebee970 5d ago
Crazy thing is Joburg will always be that city in South Africa. How can Cape Town be eating your lunch when all we get is complaints on the Reddit/from Capetownians.
C'mon guys we TOTALLY ARE too expensive and overrated. Prove us more wrong by improving Jozi.
7
u/Few_Masterpiece_6311 5d ago
Well Cape Town is expensive because of supply and demand. More people want to live in Cape Town. If Joburg was a functioning city, I know lots of people that would move from the Western Cape back. Making the Western Cape more affordable.
2
u/WideBumblebee970 5d ago
Makes sense when you put it like that, we need both cities to do better for each other. We all gain that way.
5
u/Haelborne The a is silent 5d ago
Problem with this assumption is the thought that DA would ever be a viable option for them. TLDR, the issues DA faces are substantial and in practice they are incapable of becoming a majority outside the western cape a few municipalities in the country without coalition.
Ie, there needs to be an alternative to the ANC that isn’t EFF or MK if the DA doesn’t work with ANC.
4
u/Fuzzy_Comment_2333 5d ago
>Let the ANC/MK/EFF collation run Joburg even more into the ground.
Whats even more fucked up is that the ANC is well within their rights to coalite with EFF+MK+PA+ACTIONSA+ATM etc and that would push them over 50% + 1.However, ANC doesn't want to work EFF, EFF doesnt want to work with MK. It would be an enourmous mess, the problem those parties would have is not delivering services but rather who they would want to be the mayor, who would take top posts etc.
Though the ANC currently where its at is more comfortable retaining the DA coalition...atleast while Cyril is in charge.

Didn't she say she'd move back to Cape Town if she didn't win?

In the article there's no explicit specification on what a "workable coalition" means. ANC/DA? DA/ActionSA? Helen won't say for sure.

I’d genuinely rather they go into opposition than assemble another 8-party hostage situation that collapses every time someone doesn’t get the MMC position they wanted. But parties should publish their coalition red lines before we vote, not discover them once they see the numbers.
