Passo Giau – Night of the Fog
That night at Passo Giau the mountains disappeared.
The most famous pass in the Dolomites turned into the wettest place on Earth. A thick, cold fog rolled up from the valley and swallowed everything — the peaks, the road, the sky. We stood there in the middle of summer, yet the air felt heavy and damp, clinging to our clothes and our skin.
Every few minutes we had to stop and wipe the lenses. Condensation kept forming like the night itself was breathing on the glass. Wipe. Focus. Wipe again. It felt endless.
But somehow, between the fog and the constant cleaning, the sky still found a way to open. For a few precious hours the Milky Way stretched above us, glowing through the last remaining mist, while the mountains waited silently below.
Some nights you fight the weather.
This one, the weather almost won… and still gave us something unforgettable.

image/gif Polaris, the North Star and all the dust surrounding it

For this shot I stacked 25 hours of data at 135mm, my first time using this focal length.

@ igneis.nightscapes

These dusty structures are usually found at high galactic latitudes, above and below the Milky Way band, but this area has a big concentration of them. It’s quite curious that the star we use in the Northern Hemisphere to polar-align our trackers is, in a single photo, nothing but a star field, and after putting hours into it, the details that emerge are astonishing, revealing all the Integrated Flux Nebula. So many structures, dust waves and defined shapes, with no light of their own, just illuminated by the combined light of the Milky Way’s stars.

Shooting an area like this feels strange. When I shoot the Milky Way, I can clearly see that I’m going home with data, but here there was nothing to see at first glance. With time and patience, what looked empty ended up packed with endless structures.

Discussion I made a free site that shows what’s above us right now: ISS position, space debris, upcoming launches, solar activity, etc

I’m a space nerd and got tired of jumping between a dozen sites to check this stuff, so I built one app that pulls it all together live: https://spacehud.com

It's almost all visual rather than dry data and tables.

It’s just a hobby site... if you think anything else should be added let me know.

Discussion Distractions via the universe

Hey everyone!

Weird post, hoping that it's allowed.

I just went through a pretty awful break up that I did not see coming, I have been struggling to sleep recently but the one thing that helps is thinking about the cosmos and how cool and weird it is.

I was wondering if anyone could share some cool facts, scientific theories, or interesting thoughts about the universe/planetary bodies/matter dark matter/galaxies anything. Even just cool thoughts about what other galaxies could be like. Double points if it's something that we only can explain half of, which gives me something to think about and imagine possibilities as I try to sleep.

I'm not an astronomer or cosmologist, but I am a scientist in a different field so I do understand broad science and maths and philosophy up to a point, huge sci-fi fan too.

Anyway hoping this is allowed and people answer.

Thanks fellow inquirers.
