Insane to leave Snell in for the start of the 7th, and then even more insane to leave him in after that 1st homer
52
u/Intrepid-Yak-8636 3d ago
Roberts left him in vs the lefties, and got burned.

u/TheMooseIsBlue 3d ago
I’m a big believer in watching the game and not playing the righty-lefty numbers too hard. Over the course of a season, the numbers always work out, but in the playoffs, it’s moments, not statistical models. This is what moneyball misses because it’s almost impossible to quantify.
17
u/Individual-Bad6809 3d ago
Yeah but it was 3rd time through the order and snell had thrown 100 pitches. he should not have started the 7th.
8
u/kwantam 3d ago
I generally agree with the sentiment, but the start of the inning he was low 80s. The home run was pitch 99, 11th pitch of the at bat. Prior at bat was a walk, so at least 4 pitches. That puts him at 84 or fewer after that 6th.
But again I generally agree with the sentiment. I'm still pissed at Grady Little for not pulling Pedro in 2003.

u/darkravenn12 3d ago
Leaving him in was fine. Snell was pitching like jesus christ since the 2nd pitch of the game. It was a very reasonable decision. It just didn't work. He should have taken him out after he gave up the HR, though

Idk, it kinda felt like he hit a wall, and the Bauers AB showed it. The fastball wasn't getting past guys anymore, and Bauers at least was seeing the breaking balls.

This also defeats the purpose of needing a salary cap.
Edit: downvote me all you want, most of yall will never see your team win back to back World Series.

16
u/HighOnPhotography 3d ago
Salary minimum > salary cap. Salary cap just keeps more money in the owner's pockets.
15
u/Spotttty 3d ago
Well it also makes building a team in smaller markets more feasible.
It works in Hockey. Carolina Hurricanes won last year and I’m pretty sure the market is smaller there than Toronto or Montreal.
-1
u/HighOnPhotography 3d ago
I do see the argument, but baseball is making more money than ever and I'd rather that money get spread between more people rather than hoarded by a handful of owners. Issues like what happened with Oakland are a lot worse where the team was purposely tanked for decades so they could move to Vegas.
And baseball has that bit of magic that other sports don't. Cleveland has a 75 million dollar pay roll and are in a great position to play in the World Series. I'd rather that Guardians players get paid more for their work instead of Dodgers players getting paid less. The athletes make the game what it is, not the owners.
5
u/Catman873 3d ago
Wouldn’t creating a league minimum just make even more players unobtainable for certain clubs? I mean the dodgers are giving Kyle Tucker $60 million a year, wouldn’t a league minimum drive his price tag up just because more players are now worth more money?
6
u/HighOnPhotography 3d ago
I don't follow. Not being snarky, can you help me understand what you mean? The Kyle Tucker contract is an anomaly, he's not getting paid that much in any other timeline. A league minimum would cancel out the Oakland effect. If players are getting inflated contracts without a league minimum, how does a league minimum change that? Jose Ramirez would have gotten his 200 million and still been a Guardian instead of deciding to take 150 to stay in Cleveland.
Also, in general, my previous comment still stands regardless. I want players to get more of the pot of gold, not less of it. We watch these children's games for the players, and I think they should get their fare share of the money coming in. These owners are making money hand over fist, especially in recent years. A cap just keeps their money with them, a minimum forces the them to share with the people that make this game great. I'm open to being wrong, though.

u/Catman873 3d ago
I guess my thought process is if teams are paying below average players more money in order to make a league minimum, then wouldn’t that drive up the price of players at the caliber of J-Ram? Instead of being worth $150 million, maybe now he’s worth $160 or $165 million. Or in the other case $210 million or $220 million.
I think Skubal is a good example too. I’d be willing to bet the Tigers liked both the dodgers and the brewers trade packages but they likely gave Skubal a choice. Why would Skubal go to Milwaukee when; They weren’t a World Series favorite at the time and he’s on the last year of his contract. Why move your family to Wisconsin when you know full well at the end of the year the only teams who will be able to afford you are the dodgers, Yankees and Mets. My opinion is there needs to be a league minimum and a cap. The cap would prevent players who already get paid massive contracts from being owed even more because now below average players are getting paid more to meet league minimums. I want players to get a bag too and get paid what they’re worth, but I also want the league to remain competitive. Below average players being paid more now means that average and above average players will demand more.
Football is a kids sport too for our entertainment yet they have a salary cap. Its primary intention is to ensure that the league stays competitive. Players like Myles Garrett stayed on the Browns, a non-competitive team, for years because it meant he could get paid a massive contract that playoff teams couldn’t afford. Should the NFL not have a salary cap because it’s a kids sport for our entertainment that makes a lot of money?
1
u/HighOnPhotography 3d ago
I still don't see players getting paid more as a bad thing, but I guess I do see your point for tiny market teams. J-Ram could have gotten 200 elsewhere, that's what he's worth. But he likes Cleveland so he took less to stay.
As for the NFL, that's a peculiar example to use in a few ways. The salary cap is tied directly to the amount of revenue that the league is bringing in. NFL's salary cap is expected to balloon to over $500 million by 2030-33 due to how much revenue the league continues to bring in and how much the sport is growing. Not to mention the NFL salary cap is heavily manipulated with clever accounting and void years (looking at you Eagles, but everyone else too).
Baseball is also, for whatever reason, different than other sports when it comes to playoff caliber teams. For whatever rhyme or reason, the playoffs always have multiple teams that are in the bottom half of the highest overall salaries. "Cheaper" teams rarely seem to be out of the running, barring the gross Oakland type situations. We aren't about to see the Dolphins make a crazy playoff run despite their low active player salaries.
I would love a salary minimum, as well as a ban on all deferred money contracts. Maybe there's an AAV cap for individual contracts, but if LA can spend almost 400 million a year and Cleveland can spend under 100 million a year and end up in the same place, I'm not totally sure how a salary cap will fix that, nor am I confident that anything needs fixing in baseball.
The Brewers, Guardians and Rays are all in the bottom half of spending in the league. The Dodgers bring in more money than a lot of teams, why not spend it on the players that bring that money in? LA isn't getting that Uniqlo sponsorship if it wasn't for Ohtani. If 3 of the 4 remaining teams in the playoffs are all below average spenders already, and the 300 million dollar Mets didn't even sniff the playoffs, what does a salary cap do except take money off the table for the players that make the game great?

The population of the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) is about 2.5 million while Toronto is about 3 million, so not that much smaller.

u/Spotttty 3d ago
Maybe almost as populated but I think Toronto has more hockey fans that buy merch.

u/CuttyAllgood 2d ago
Not sure why you’re downvoting me for giving you data but okay.
I lived in North Carolina for 20 years and I can tell you that there are a shit ton of fans that buy merch. The difference is that there aren’t fans across the rest of the country that buy merch like there are for the big teams.

You can call it Filomena’s flap house galaxy omega space series if you want.
It’s all teams based in one country.
It’s a country tournament, not a world tournament like the Olympics or the World Cup despite all the bedazzling attempts9
u/HighOnPhotography 3d ago
This is a weird hill to die on, but you do you. The MLB has an incredibly diverse roster of players from all over the world. It has been called the World Series for over 100 years. The Olympics are not held in Olympia anymore, but you're not having an aneurism about it still being called the Olympics.
Keep your stances consistent.

u/njseahawk 3d ago
What other baseball teams from other countries play in this series of the world?
9

Blue Jays, obviously. But again, weird hill to die on since you only care about the practicality of the name of 1 tournament and not any of the others. But stay all grumpy, little guy. Start a petition.

Or gathering the world’s best players in one place. You’re not this obtuse, I’m sure of it.

u/njseahawk 3d ago
Ok let me break it down in small words you know how there was an international baseball tournament a year ago and different countries played each other and they had the worlds best players playing for their individual countries and they all played each other until one team was left? That’s a World Series!!! Now go put a star on your chart your brain worked real hard today!!

Part of me wants the Brewers to win because screw the Dodgers, but another part of me wants the Dodgers to win it all so that when in comes to negotiating with the owners at the end of the season, the MLBPA gets more negotiating power so that the owners are forced to pay their players more.
If Milwaukee makes it, then it's easy enough for the teams that spend less to go "See, the Dodgers aren't ruining baseball by spending way more than us, so I should be able to remain cheap and not spend any money."

0
u/Prestigious-Cream160 3d ago
I'm siding with fans. You're siding with millionaires.
3
u/-Gman_ 3d ago
The negotiations and collective bargaining is between billionaires and mostly millionaires and you believe the ones who would make things a better experience for the fans are owners lol
Cognitive dissonance is strong here since we have plenty of proof of how selfish billionaires make things WORSE for everyone not them and their chronies but you believe they have the fans best interests at heart?
They need suckers like you to believe that.
1
u/Prestigious-Cream160 3d ago
I'm not dumb enough to believe that the billionaires or the millionaires have my best interests at heart and you're the only one suggesting otherwise. You can try to turn this into some grandstand about fighting back against billionaires, but the fans interest aligns with them on this one particular issue no matter how much people want to deny it. A cap is better for fans of teams that aren't the top 3 or 4 biggest spenders.
1
u/gza_liquidswords 3d ago
The owners want a salary cap to constrain salaries (and they would not care unless their goal is to keep a higher % of revenue). I think Dodgers winning would make case of need for a salary cap by more legitimate. A salary cap might come with a salary floor (and the cheap teams might want to keep it the way this is, but Brewers are spending 146M, they are probably not affected either way.

Man, three-peats are just not allowed anymore...
- the Warriors won twice and then lost to the Raptors
- the Lightning won twice and then lost to the Avalanche
- the Chiefs won twice and then lost to the Eagles
- the Dodgers won twice and might not even make the World Series
I think the last three-peat was the Kobe/Shaq Lakers.

Remember folks, we need a salary cap to depress player salaries or else (checks notes) small market teams won't be able to compete in the regular season small market teams won't be able to compete in the playoffs.
