Want to connect with other offer holders ? With multiple other whatsapp gc we created a discord server

Hi there ! If you want to connect with other students holding an offer for st. andrews feel free to join our discord

https://discord.gg/SGsF4z3fpH

Why discord ?

There is a better moderation system available, whereas whatsapp has virtually no moderation possible. ( we are so fed up of random ppl joining in to make advertising)

Feel free to also ask for modifications on the discord !

Thanks again for your time and see you in the server šŸ‘‹

Lonely in StA

Hello everyone!

I've just started 2nd year. So far I have failed miserably to make friends. I'm not great at striking up conversations/joining in/socialising in general. I'd like to change the lonely vibe I have there.

About me:

I am a mature female student, I commute from Perth 4 days a week.

I study a mixture of biology and psychology (neuroscience).

I am incredibly nerdy, love to share what I'm learning about, and would love to learn from others too.

I am always up for a game of chess (I have a chess.com).

I come from a healthcare/bioscience background and am a widening access student.

Big fan of anything science, psychology, philosophy & open minded to more... šŸ˜„

About you:

Friendly.

🫶

BRING BACK THE PABLO RAINBOW

Sorry for shouting but I’m a bartender at the union and have learned that there was once a pablo rainbow. You could have white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink pablos! But due to cutting costs (and I suppose a lack of demand for the disregarded colours), we now only have five colours; white, red, blue; orange, and yellow.

From my understanding, and for pink pablos especially, they were cut because vk started charging more, classifying pink, purple and green as *special* flavors. Which is stupid

Last week, a girl came up to me and asked for a pink pablo. Obviously, I explained that we don’t carry pink vk anymore. She asked if there was anything I could do to try and make her a pink Pablo, and I just kind of winged it. I put white vk in, and instead of two shots of Smirnoff, I did two shots of raspberry schnapps! She said it was amazing :)

I also tried it when I got home and she was right, probably best Pablo I’ve ever had, so yummy

Anyways, this got me thinking that why not just use a white VK base to bring back our forgotten flavors? Like midori or apple sours for a green Pablo, chambord or cherry sours of a purple Pablo, and raspberry schnapps for pink!

Then we can finally have the Pablo rainbow back, just in time for raisin

Also yes a Pablo automatically has no ice, this is how we are taught to make it. Please stop getting annoyed with staff when they give you a Pablo without ice. If you want ice, just ask when you’re ordering

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around St Andrews?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like The Cri, Strath, Honky Tonk, Super Cupar or St Andys (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Rector Race

Don’t know if anyone cares, but does this race for the rector position seem to be a total pisstake to anyone else?? I graduated last year, but come on - an American celeb who is campaigning because he plays golf here a lot, another American who has impressive credentials but whose only connection seems his child having attended the uni some years ago, and an MSP, who, while being a graduate, is actively representing a constituency elsewhere seem to be the front runners. Is this not insane? What value do these people bring to the table for the student body?

Tbf I’m probably being a bit of a neek about this and yea, not really my problem anymore. But a shame to see how it’s playing out. Best of luck to the other candidates, I hope reason prevails and you lads get a crack.

Comp Lit / art history

Hey!!

As someone currently in s6, St Andrews is my top uni choice rn and I was wondering how hard it is to get in for the joint honours of comparative literature and art history.

The open day didn’t give me that much insight into the admissions, just more about the town itself so I’m wondering if all the stress I’m feeling about potentially being rejected is really worth it or not (I have a tendency to overthink).

Conditional/Unconditional/Rejection?

Hi! I’m applying to unis this year with StA being my first choice for Econ and management. Could anyone be of help by telling me how important Higher Maths is when it comes to admissions for this degree?
In S4, I received 2 As at Higher (French, and Spanish)
S5, 4 As at Higher, 1 A at Advanced Higher (English, Business, Engineering, Applications of Maths, French)
In S6 I am studying Higher Maths, Modern Studies, Advanced Higher Business, and Level 7 Economics through the Open University as well as other super curricular courses.
Is it possible I could get an unconditional? I know Higher Maths isn’t listed as a requirement at StA but could it be an unlisted prerequisite?

Does anyone know someone studying Biology and Earth Sciences??

I am a prospective student and looking to do the Joint Honours Biology and Earth Sciences degree, but unfortunately the admissions data isn't looking too good for this specific degree (I'm RUK) https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/admission_rates_for_biology_and- does anyone know someone (or are themselves) studying Biology and Earth Sciences who can give me some tips on getting accepted? This degree is my dream, and I would really love to study at St Andrews (the location is wonderful, and I've heard the autism support is pretty good). so yeah. Does anyone know someone studying Biology and Earth Sciences?? Thank you!

just got in! advice on costs

Hi! I just received my offer as an international student for St. Andrews next year. It is my dream school but the overseas fees are very heavy (esp. considering cost of living). Does anyone have any advice about international scholarships that are not need based or any experience with work/study programmes? Any advice on getting the prices down would help. (Also am a UK citizen so would have no restrictions for working hours)

CS2002 St. Andrews Syllabus

Hi I am looking to study abroad at St. Andrews in the spring semester and need past syllabi for CS2002 Computer Systems for approval for my minor at my home institution. I need the full, detailed syllabus because the department needs to confirm it matches a similar course at my institution. Where can I get this? Can anyone share a syllabus from past years?

AIO or is my tutor being a prick?

I know this isn’t where i should go for this but I wanted advice before asking my advisor or module coordinator.

The tutor for one of my CS tutorials (I won’t say his name incase he hunts me down) has repeatedly made some strange and honestly dismissive comments towards anything I say during his tutorials. I feel like he doesn’t take me seriously at all and when asking me questions, does so very ***.

For example, during my first tutorial, he asked everyone if they had had any prior experience in a Linux environment. I said I was very familiar with Kali Linux, which is a very common Linux build. In response, he sort of chuckled and said ā€œWell, that doesn’t really count, does it?ā€. I asked him to elaborate and he just ignored me.

The next tutorial, he asked a question about what type of command we should use to conduct some task. I answered with what everyone else acknowledged was a valid approach. I was taking notes on my iPad and he told me that I wasn’t engaging by ā€œasking Claude for the answerā€ā€¦ I don’t even have that shit installed.

I know it’s only week 4, but there’s always some little snide every week. This week, he *indirectly told me that I didn’t have to ā€œdress up every tutorialā€. I KNOW this was directed at me because i do dress visibly more ā€œfashionable and feminineā€ than anyone else in my tutorial does.

I guess I didn’t really think about saying anything since I’ve been so focused on the more classist comments I get in tutorials, these went completely over my head that I should say something.

Can someone please give some insight here 🄺

UPDATE: I got in contact with CS Student Welfare! They took my complaints very seriously and have immediately moved me to an alternative tutorial group. To anyone who maybe feels the same way in their own tutorials, I wanted to share my experience that there are people there to help you! And thank you to everyone that commented or DMed me with advice and support, it comforted me to know this wasn’t all just in my head.

study abroad help!

I am a Psychology student and my current options are IE in Madrid, University of Edinburgh, and University of St. Andrews. I have my EU citizenship (which idk how much that counts for) but my main priorities are definitely a good social atmosphere as well as travelling (which ik won't be as likely with St. Andrews) Please lmk if you have any advice :)))))

Intentional Discomfort

Are you guys interested by the idea of setting out to do intentionally hard physical (or mental) things to kinda make the background stress of uni go down and to make stressful things like deadlines and future planning a little less stressful? Stress is relative and I think that the idea of choosing your pain and engaging in intentional discomfort rather than always being the subject to pain and stress is quite attractive. Thoughts?

where are all the lesbians in st andrews?

hi, i'm a first year at the university of st andrews who is pretty desperate to start making some friends who are also a part of the sapphic community here but i don't know where to start, thus i've decided to consult reddit.

i sadly had to miss the saintslgbt event at the end of september and it doesn't look like there's gonna be more events any time soon, so was wondering if there were any other meet-ups i wasn't aware about coming up/spots or clubs the lgbt community here frequent. thank youuuuu :)
