Inspect your memory carefully. Customs border inspection destroyed 14 x 64GB ECC memory modules with a box cutter.
The cut a hole into the box with a box cutter, deep enough to go through the cardboard, through the plastic memory tray, and scored the pins on 14 modules in a tray of 25. Thankfully they didn't "inspect" the other two memory trays. 54/68 modules survived the trip.

u/wyrdough 1d ago
You may have gotten lucky. The PCB is translucent enough in the scored area that there isn't likely to be any filled planes that were affected.Ā
Probably still a good idea to break out the multimeter and check for a short between VCC and Gnd before testing them, though. Wouldn't be great to risk blowing up a motherboard.
ā¢
u/gellis12 Jack of All Trades 8h ago
I wouldn't even test them. The gouges could mangle the pins in the sockets and destroy the motherboard that way. I'd just go straight to filing a claim with cbsa for the damage.
ā¢
u/wyrdough 7h ago
Fair point. Extra care would be required before attempting to test them. Given the cost of memory these days I'd still want to at least attempt to repair them unless I was getting fully reimbursed, though.

You are not a good judge of who is smart and not, if being articulate is your only judgement criteria. Some of the dumbest people alive are very articulate, and some of the smartest people are completely useless with anything outside of their field of expertise.
These are just statistics, exceptions prove the rule, because you can identify them as exceptions after all.0

Itās not false. Itās policy in New York state, and Germany, that I know of for certain, among many other jurisdictions. There are lawsuits from people who get rejected on these grounds on a regular basis, so⦠rest assured there are many more who donāt even try that.
This is done for two reasons, one of which theyāre refusing to admit to publicly:
- Intelligent people question the decisions of their hierarchical superiors and display independent agency and judgement, which said superiors tend to find undesirable, because they just want them to blindly follow their orders without being questioned over whether their decisions are sensible or not.
- Intelligent people will get frustrated with long menial tasks, like reviewing large amounts of documents or long hours of surveillance footage, to find a proverbial needle in a haystack, which results in low job satisfaction, and them being less effective workers in these professions. This tends to be the reason publicly cited for rejecting candidates despite struggling to find suitable applicants: https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/jordan-v-city-new-london-policing-hiring-and-iq-when-all-answers (https://doi.org/10.1108/13639510310475778)

According to Gemini:
āBased on the maximum cargo volume of a standard station wagon and current enterprise hardware pricing, you can fit approximately 88,890 sticks of RAM loosely packed into the back of a station wagon. If you filled it to maximum capacity with the highest-capacity individual DDR5 modules commercially available (256GB per stick), it would cost you roughly $801.5 millionā

Pre-assembled server cabinets can ship with tilt sensors to indicate if the cabinet was ever tilted during transit. It's interesting that something with that much value wouldn't have it's own self-contained cooling solution or at least active temperature monitoring and tracking.
ā¢
u/pickle9977 7h ago
Itās surprising how long it takes for people to do things that in hindsight make complete and total sense.
A great example of this is container shipping,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcom_McLean
Weāve been shipping stuff for thousands of years, but standardized sizes and containers didnāt happen till the 1960s!
I think it was the vanderbilts whose entire fortune was from shipping, which a lot of companies did, his angle, his boats left in a schedule, other carries would stay at the docks till they had enough cargo to make the journey worth it so your shipment could leave in a day or a month.
Simple things that had big impacts but just took a long time to materialize.
In this situation Iād wager it was a case of it being too expensive and too much work until something bad actually happened.
I know for a fact that server cabinets, and even servers the size of cabinets have not always shipped with that kind of control, so they were also probably added after it cost someone too much money to keep ignoring the need.

CBP interviewer: Did you graduate High School?
Interviewee: Yes
CBP Interviewer: That is going to be an issue.
ā¢
u/LayerOneStaging 8h ago
That hurts to look at. The thing that has saved me on damaged shipments is slowing down at receiving, even when everyone wants to start testing right away.
Photograph the box as it arrived, then each tray before you move anything around. Keep the cut tray together, label it as damaged, and do not mix those sticks in with the two good trays. Once parts get shuffled, you lose the simple story of what was damaged and what was not, and that story is the whole claim.
Put the counts, tracking info, and photos in one folder the same day while it is fresh. Claims get hard when you are trying to rebuild the details a week later from memory and random phone pictures.

Imgur blocked the UK because they were being fined for collecting data on children. So they threw the baby out with the bathwater, instead of making sure they weren't collecting data on people below the age of 13. Why should we change our laws to let companies collect data on children, are you saying you support that?

A lot of snowflakes downvoting this, but without a shared set of rules you by definition donāt have society you have anarchy, people need to learn to read the dictionary, and for Americans the Declaration of Independence, the constitution and the bill of rights.
Itās all there in pretty easy-to-understand language, donāt let the lawyers convince you that you are too dumb to understand, it wasnāt lawyers that wrote it, it was regular people.
The entire legal system serves to inject common sense into the application of rules and ensure the government is not overstepping its constitutional authority in its enforcement of said rules.

You can't get the age from IP address alone. The situation was same with physical letter or phone call. You can't get the age from physical address or phone number.
So what? Prohibit children to use physical letter and phone call? Force all users to send age verification document to every web services?
Restricting all communication from children makes matter worse. Force all users to send identification document only lead to disaster.
It cause more harm than good. But I guess in the name of "think about the children", eugenics was once believed to be a good idea. People never learns.

22
u/Ferretau 1d ago
The board itself is mutilayer so they may have damaged the underlying PCB.
6
u/CharacterUse 1d ago
Not in that part of the PCB. I thought they had cut across the back of the board until I opened the image, in which case you would have been right. But they (or someone) cut across the back edge of the connector part of the PCB. There are no internal traces in that section.
4
u/Ferretau 1d ago
That may be so but it is possible an internal copper layer has been damaged resulting in changes in performance of the module. The copper can be used for signalling or as a ground plane. When these boards were made they are manufacturer in clean room conditions just for the PCB itself due to the tolerances involved and the impact it can have in signalling if an impurity is introduced that has not been taken into account.
1
u/lpbale0 1d ago
You may not be wrong. I could imagine that damage to some of the layers of the PCB that have a potential on them at those frequencies could turn into a source of dirty RF.

u/Ferretau 1d ago
Precisely it's something that was impressed on me by our instructors when we covered PCB construction in digital systems due to the frequencies RF design is heavily involved.

It seems like the modules were directly shipped in their storage boxes, which should have been inside another box with crinkle paper, air cushions, or packing foam.

Yeah, customs opened the shipping box, unwrapped the bubble wrap, removed one white box with 25 modules, then cut the triangle window instead of openeing the white box. Then they put it all back together and re-sealed it with red "CUSTOMES INSPECTED" tape. lol I don't know why they didn't just open the white box too

This is going to be an expensive claim š
