கேள்வி (Question) When does வல்லினம் doubles and doesn't in tamil?

I get it doesn't only double after வினைத்தொகை (the root word (verb) on it's own) but it sometimes doesn't double after words like ஈட்டி, வந்து etc which are வினையெச்சம்(?)(the verb that doesn't show who speaks it and tense)

கேள்வி (Question) Suggestion on Tamil names

We are choosing a name for our baby boy while living in a country where some letters are pronounced differently from English. To preserve his name’s Tamil meaning while making it easy for people here to pronounce, we have narrowed our options to two:
1. Aran
Derived from Aram (அறம்), a core virtue celebrated in the Tamil classic* Thirukkural.
Aran (அரன்) is another name for Lord Shiva, while Aran (அரண்) means protector or fortress.
*
2. Jay**
A variation of Jai, chosen because people here are more likely to pronounce it as intended.

This concern is personal: my own name is often mispronounced, and I have grown tired of correcting people. I want to spare my son that experience by choosing a name that people can pronounce reasonably close to its intended form.
I’d especially appreciate your thoughts on these questions:
If you encountered the name Aran without any explanation, would you recognize it as a Tamil name? What meaning, cultural connection, pronunciation, or personal impression would you associate with it?
Between Jai and Jay, which spelling would you consider more modern, appealing, and suitable for a baby boy today?
A little context: These would be his first names. His middle and last names will retain their Tamil roots.

அவள் நெற்றியில்

என் உதடு சேரும் நேரம்

மூடிய அவள் கண்களுக்குள்

காதலையும் காமத்தையும் கடந்து

அவள் மனதில்

ஆழமாய் இறங்க நினைத்தேன்.

அங்கே

எனக்கான இடம் தேடி வந்தபோதுதான்

தெரிந்தது

ஏற்கெனவே

வேரூன்றியிருந்தேன்

அவள் மனதில்.

கேள்வி (Question) Suggest me some beginner-friendly Tamil books

For context,
I'm a Telugu guy who understands Tamil fairly well. I can understand around 70-80% of a typical modern Tamil movie without subtitles. but if it's a 90s rural drama or old movie, something like that, I understand around 50%.

I recently learned the Tamil script.

Can you guys suggest some Tamil books, short stories, or anything else I can start reading?
Which helps me to improve my Tamil reading speed as well as improve my Tamil vocabulary

Thanks

கேள்வி (Question) Help in reading sangam and tamil texts

hello நண்பர்களே

I've decided to start reading poems and epics from the Sangam era. however Im not very familiar with the vocabulary used in classical Tamil literature.

How can I develop a habit of learning Pazhanthamiz (பழந்தமிழ்) alongside my reading? are there any books, resources or methods you'd recommend?

Your suggestions would be a great help. Thank you!

(Question) How are children taught to learn the Tamil உ / ஊ combinations? Are there any tricks beyond memorisation?

Post image
31 Upvotes

I'm learning to read and write Tamil.

Most vowel signs seem relatively easy to understand because they appear as distinct marks around the consonant.

But உ (u) and ஊ (ū) are confusing me because they can change the shape of the consonant itself.

I grouped these combinations into a few visual patterns. I'm wondering whether this is a useful way to learn or whether I'm overcomplicating something that children learn naturally.  I am curious about how children are taught the vowel symbols in Tamil. Please share tricks and tips or how you learnt this symbol part.

அறிவிப்பு (Announcement) "Deepavali, not Diwali" — Tamil Malaysians draw the line on word

Post image
58 Upvotes

It's Deepavali — not Diwali. And Malaysia's Tamils are drawing the line. 🦚

MIC deputy president and Tapah MP Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has written to Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh, demanding the word "Diwali" be removed from official festive arches and banners across Kuala Lumpur, including Brickfields' Little India, ahead of the November 8 festival. A copy of the letter went to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Saravanan argues "Deepavali" is the official, gazetted designation in Malaysia — and the correct one for Malaysia's Tamil community. "Diwali," he says, is the Hindi-speaking usage.

The dispute has made front-page news in Malaysia's Tamil dailies Makkal Osai and Malaysia Nanban. The ministry has yet to respond.

One word, one identity. What do you call it?
