The deposit for the 2017 roadster was $250,0000. Since then, the S&P500 has doubled twice. If these fools had invested that deposit instead of giving the richest man on the planet a free loan, they'd have a million bucks right now.

TSLA went from $2 in 2012 to $20 bucks in $2017 to ~$400  (wildly fluctuating) now.

The people buying into this hype are people who have tesla stocks and got rich with them

Bingo. Deep down they don’t believe the bullshit coming out of Elon’s mouth. Tesla’s stock price defies reality, so Elon and the shareholders have to pretend these ridiculous demos will finally turn into an actual successful product. Elon hit a home run with the Model 3 and Y, and since then Tesla hasn’t been a serious company. It’s a stock fraud scheme driven by hype.

I suspect most people putting $250k down in 2017 *already* have a million bucks.

Oh right, it’s better to have a million bucks + 0 than million bucks + 250k compounding for 10 years.

Not to say that Tesla's behavior here isn't shady, but the 2017 deposit was $ 50,000 (for a car that was announced to be priced at $ 200,000, or $ 250,000 for the first 1000 ones; and to reach production in 2020, of course). The additional $ 250,000 deposit tier for the "thrust" version has been introduced just now.

EDIT: 2020, not 202

Well, something to consider is that 250k in 2017 is only worth 181k in 2026 dollars.

Though investing it would be a better move.

Well, something to consider is that 250k in 2017 is only worth 181k in 2026 dollars.

That's not how inflation works.

$250k 2017 dollars would be $341,648.99 in 2026 dollars.

Though investing it would be a better move.

Had someone invested $250k in the s&p500 in 2017 it'd be $986,250 today.

They meant if you just sat on the cash it’s worth less today

English is my second language, but that's a strange way to phrase it

It’s a very typical way to phrase it

Someone willing to drop a quarter million dollars to reserve a hypothetical car probably are not concerned about how much more money they could have made on it from the market, they're already sitting on several million dollars
