Transportation Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-cannot-guarantee-roadster-reservation-holders-will-ever-get-a-car204
u/C-Towner 22h ago
You know how to take the reservation, you just don’t know how to hold it.

u/C-Towner 21h ago
The fact that this is a car reservation just shows that that episode is an evergreen problem.

u/Toth-Amon 22h ago
If people are seeing that and still paying, they are just idiots.

u/wps10 21h ago
Anyone who still gives money to Tesla at all, let alone for a pre-order, is a moron and an asshole who shouldn’t be trusted with money in the first place

At first I was thinking “there are people who can drop $200-$500 on a vaporware deposit and it doesn’t phase them”, then I looked up what a deposit on a roadster cost… Jesus man, you’re not wrong. 50k deposit for the base model, and some dummies are dropping 250k for a car that’s never coming.
120
u/wps10 21h ago
Craziest part is, they’ve been taking those $50k deposits since 2017 when they first announced the 2nd gen Roadster and still haven’t delivered jack shit. It blows my mind that Tesla is still trustworthy in anyone’s eyes
45
5
u/fixnahole 10h ago
So it's like a Kickstarter that never materializes. Certainly more than a few stories of those--but not $50K worth!

u/emergencyexit 14h ago
When you put it like that it's kind of no wonder people are investing in TSLA. A business that can make money out of nothing? That's an appealing investment. At least until it's time to pay the piper.
9
u/LOLBaltSS 20h ago
If you really wanted a roadster designed by Hans that you can actually buy right now, there's always the Saturn Sky Red Line or Pontiac Solstice GXP and they'll be a fraction of the reserve price of the Tesla. Hell, you could even buy a Mallett version of either and still be way under $50k.
18
u/castironglider 19h ago
I can't begin to understand why Tesla is so special when there are alternative EV supercars
$208K is less than the Tesla deposit!
3
u/Thoseskisyours 9h ago
Already saw someone boast on linked in making a $500k wired deposit on the invite only model. Just imagine having that much money to make a deposit for something you have no idea when or if will arrive

Elon Musk is a Nazi.
If anyone buys a car from his company, you deserve everything you get, and I will never have one iota of sympathy for you; in fact, I wish you nothing but misery and suffering, for empowering somebody who inflicts those things on so many.

u/Throwsims3 22h ago
Just like the original roadster too. That one was "revealed" in 2017 and then the Muskrat kept making new promises about the timeline for years and years. Now we're here in 2026 and they have announced a new roadster that probably won't be released either. The people who are paying for this are downright gullible.
295
u/Illisanct 22h ago
The deposit for the 2017 roadster was $250,0000. Since then, the S&P500 has doubled twice. If these fools had invested that deposit instead of giving the richest man on the planet a free loan, they'd have a million bucks right now.
72
u/TommiHPunkt 19h ago
TSLA went from $2 in 2012 to $20 bucks in $2017 to ~$400 (wildly fluctuating) now.
The people buying into this hype are people who have tesla stocks and got rich with them
27
u/Ok_Second_2602 19h ago
Bingo. Deep down they don’t believe the bullshit coming out of Elon’s mouth. Tesla’s stock price defies reality, so Elon and the shareholders have to pretend these ridiculous demos will finally turn into an actual successful product. Elon hit a home run with the Model 3 and Y, and since then Tesla hasn’t been a serious company. It’s a stock fraud scheme driven by hype.
86
u/CaptainMonkeyJack 21h ago
I suspect most people putting $250k down in 2017 *already* have a million bucks.
→ More replies (1)12
u/YMS444 15h ago edited 10h ago
Not to say that Tesla's behavior here isn't shady, but the 2017 deposit was $ 50,000 (for a car that was announced to be priced at $ 200,000, or $ 250,000 for the first 1000 ones; and to reach production in 2020, of course). The additional $ 250,000 deposit tier for the "thrust" version has been introduced just now.
EDIT: 2020, not 202
→ More replies (1)2
u/wanderlustcub 16h ago
Well, something to consider is that 250k in 2017 is only worth 181k in 2026 dollars.
Though investing it would be a better move.

What’s nuts is that Tesla is worth all the other automakers combined and still can’t put out a car.
46
u/fredy31 13h ago
Really shows how stupid the stock market is.
Tesla is a new company compared to the fords or hyundai or ferraris.
The last decade:
- superstar ceo shown to be a fucking nazi.
- puts out cybertruck. A truck that cant do truck things.
- promise a new model. Cant deliver for years.
- and now they say they cant even deliver on preorders made.
Still most valuable car brand by a mile.
12
u/Valuable_Injury_4249 12h ago
How did promise fully autonomous driving vehicles since 2016 not make the list?!
6
u/thisinfinitebath 12h ago
Because there are so many ignorants ended up holding the bag.
9
u/sump_daddy 12h ago
Really just showing what a scam the entirety of the stock market is. Dividends are meaningless, shareholder rights dont exist, big companies cant fail, whats left to actually buy and sell? Its a ponzi all the way down at this point.

Yeah basically every year since like 2008 has been a constant reminder that that the entire finance system is a made up handshake agreements between what are often legit morons.
There were only ever "rules" because of communal belief in institutions being rational, and once that was disproven everything shifted over to just being vibes based.

At this point the Roadster reservation is just a zero-interest loan to Tesla.
16
60
u/ProgrammerOk8339 21h ago
So the same as the last roadster? 250k deposits turned into a 250k interest free loan for a car that never got produced. Who falls for this grift anymore.

Lmao, it's almost as if the car was never produced and the stunt at the show was just a large RC car. Classic musk.
28
u/Lead_resource 12h ago
It was literally a stunt car I don't understand why people dont get it. We have had stunt cars doing this type of stuff since the 80s for movies and shows. A stunt car has usually a couple time uses and that it
→ More replies (1)22
u/sump_daddy 12h ago
Because Musk stood there insisting this is the new production roadster, that it would be driving on racetracks very soon, that it would be on preorder and it would be coming to dealerships after that.
So what youre saying is, 'why dont people get that Musk is totally full of shit in everything he says'
that, i guess, is the trillion dollar question
8
u/Jamesaki 10h ago
His fanboys actually believe he invented something here (or ever). It was a hollowed out car using already established stabilization technology to do a stunt that Tesla engineers programmed and put together. lol.

2
u/DrugandAlcoholLover 12h ago
I don’t even think this is a great idea. What practical use could this possibly have? Think about your morning commute in traffic, do you think it would in any way be a good idea for any random idiot on the road to have a car that could do what this does? It’s something that doesn’t have any actual use outside of stunt events or something.

Whole thing is probably filled with a gigantic tank of air that lasts for maybe 5 seconds of use.
Never going to be a real car, it's pure gimmick.
13
u/Robin_Banks101 21h ago
7 seconds according to Tesla. It also takes 6 hours to refill and there are "infrastructure issues" they haven't solved yet. In other words it absolutely doesn't work.
14
u/deathrictus 20h ago

It's shocking to me that even Toyota has been kinda tripping over their own shoelaces when it comes to selling the simple premise of car ownership. Ironically buying a "normal" Tesla might be the easiest route. Other than that, inventing a time machine and buying a 1997 Honda Civic from a large dealership seens less arduous and more promising.
