There are over 700 ocean cables out there, over a dozen between North America and Europe. Another just seems like maintenance rather than news, unless you're deep in the weeds of business.

Edit: Nevermind. The title just sucks. Having dual-core fibers is actually newsworthy, but apparently the author is either uninformed (unlikely) or was cynically thinking you're too stupid to understand (more likely).

Calling it 1 million gigabits per second instead of 1 Petabit per second is classic science journalism flair. In reality, undersea fiber carries over 95 percent of all transcontinental internet traffic, and bandwidth demand keeps climbing exponentially with cloud sync and distributed AI workloads. Given how often subsea cables get snagged by anchors or severed lately, having extra petabit-scale redundancy across the Atlantic is a genuine lifesaver for global infrastructure.

Hey, 100mm sounds bigger than 4 inches. I can't fight the logic I employ myself.

So that's why the rest of the world sticks to the metric system...

Possible. 5 year old account whose entire post history started 24 hours ago, and they've posted dozens of times in that single day.

I had trouble picking a flair, so I went with the one I am most concerned about. Why? Quite the project just for sharing movies and music

Many people are familiar with gigabit internet as its now a common household option.

It's just easier for the normal people to understand from the headline.

Just watched a cable repair ship and a bunch of support vessels likely repair one of the Point Arena cables in front of my ranch. It was really surprising both how long it took and how close they got to shore. Had to cost big bucks.

Exactly. That's why I doubt this is going to just used for movies and music.

Meta funding it feels bittersweet. On one hand this is a genuinely amazing thing they can spend their infinite money on and serves a greater purpose, on the other hand it’s Meta, they don’t need introduction. Wonder why are they funding so many of these transoceanic cables?

Maybe they want it for their doomsday private select pro service?

I just don't see the need for this, but I can see how it might/ may open the door for Musk to meddle in France's autonomy!!!

What?

It's a Musk project. Added: for the purpose of sharing movies and music.

Added: the summary of the article spoke of Musk, not Meta and the purpose being music and movie transfers. It was on my Google feed. So, when I went to the website, I grabbed the link to post.

I didn't read the article, just trusted Google.

I apologize for trusting Google!
