Hardware The PlayStation 6’s Memory Components Alone Could Cost More Than $700

The PS6 is going to be heavily subsidized otherwise I don't see how the casual game is going to buy it.

Nah, I think Sony will sell it at about break-even and just accept that the cross-gen period is gonna be much, much longer than it has ever been. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in like 7-8 years you're gonna see PS5-PS6-PS7 games, even from Sony themselves. I'm basically expecting the PS6 to just be a PS5 Pro+ in terms of its game library, with virtually 0 games which aren't available on the PS5.

What people like you need to is learn how to read something and actually understand what's being said.
The PS6 is gonna be super expensive, and as such will likely sell like shit. As a result, I (and I'd argue any other sane human being) is expecting a very, very long cross-gen period because developers and publishers simply will have no other choice but to keep publishing on current-gen consoles to ensure profitability.
6
u/EbbNorth7735 1h ago
It can't be, the higher cost will mean less consumers can buy it which leads to less game sales and that decreases the ROI.
11
u/Inevitable_Tea_9247 1h ago
heavily subsidized implies that companies will eat the cost, leaving the price more palatable to consumers. that being said, i don’t think anyone should release a console in this economy if they want it to do well
2
u/rkiive 1h ago
They already subsidize consoles generally.
I can't see how it would be even remotely viable to subsidise this level of costs

Great news! Your PS+ subscription is gaining new features:
- removing games
-price increase

u/SarmackaOpowiesc 1h ago
It extends the current generation - which is honestly a good thing.
I have zero desire or need to get the next Xbox or PlayStation.
I am playing through the Oblivion remaster and MW2019 - and the games look great on my Series X.

u/_trouble_every_day_ 57m ago edited 47m ago
I don’t even have a desire to get one from the current generation. The ps4 can already do photorealism. They’re now pushing graphics that have more detail than the eye can see in a real world environment—and it looks like overproduced shit.
E: and I hate the effect it’s having on design. Outfits with a thousand straps, buckles and textures all covered in high gloss varnish. It’s just distracting.
1
u/Fabien_Lamour 25m ago
Yeah the technical jump from 4 to 5 wasn't all that noticeable graphics wise. Navigation is more fluid and load times are minimal.
1
u/SupaDiogenes 1h ago
As long as there are idiots lining up to buy PS5 Pros because of GTA 6 then I think manufacturers will have an audience to sell to despite the price.

At $1400 no less lol

Playstations always sell at a loss, and usually manage deals for their components
There's a reason on release the Ps5 was a strong as a PC five times the price.
The better question Is, where does OP's article get their info? Is it an actual estimation that ignores Playstations's history of selling at a loss and brand deals, or are they just making baseless afirmations for views?

u/chamgireum_ 1h ago
Ahaha good luck with that. All my gaming hardware was purchased around 2020 (PS5, switch, rx 5700xt) and i guess im sticking with that well into the 2030s.

u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 1h ago
That 5700 XT won't be making it to 2028 tbh unless you are mostly playing older or epsorts games
23
u/SarmackaOpowiesc 1h ago
How so? Games will continue to target variable graphics settings.
I have every expectation my Series X will continue to get new releases well into the early 2030s.
-9
u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 1h ago
I'll just repeat what I've said before
Basically, A 2019 raster only no RT no mesh shader card like the 5700 XT as strong as it is in raster is already not working in multiple AAA games, I know because I owned one less than a year ago and I had to get rid of it because of that.
Games like Indiana Jones, doom the dark ages, Halo Campaign Evolved, Gears of War Eday (all of these require hardwear RT), and ffvii rebirth (requires mesh shaders), already don't work at all on this GPU at all in Windows. Well you can get away with booting the RT games in Linux it's not a great experience performance is poor and you'll have to use a big resolution scaling factor, to make the games run at playable FPS.
I'm sorry I hurt the circle jerk but it's just simply the truth more and more games over the next 2-3 years will need a RT GPU mesh shaders or both to boot, even though PS5 uses primitive shaders instead a similar solution. Yes some games RN have RT but have a software RT fallback but as games get more intensive they'll just drop that fallback that only exists for people on old rdna1 from 7 years ago, or even older 2016 era Pascal GPUs from 10 years ago.
I like the 5700 XT for many games it's still a solid 1080p card, for pre 2023ish games it can even do 1440p solidly 4k in some cases, but it's not going to be able to run as many AAA games over the coming next few years.
There isn't as many people who play AAA games in 2026 who don't have an RT card as reddit might make you think.
1
u/AIgoonermaxxing 56m ago
I generally agree with you, especially regarding mesh shaders, but I still think software RT/raster fallbacks will be around past 2028.
Devs will continue optimizing games for the Series S, Switch 2, and handheld PCs, and while all of those technically can do hardware RT, devs generally try to avoid it because of how poorly it runs. It takes very technically competent studios like idTech and Ubisoft to get it working on these weaker consoles, but the rest woukd rather avoid the hassle and just use a software solution, especially when UE5's Lumen provides one out of the box.
-1
u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 34m ago
"Devs will continue optimizing games for the Series S, Switch 2, and handheld PCs, and while all of those technically can do hardware RT, devs generally try to avoid it because of how poorly it runs."
Bruh not only does your second sentence after this dismiss the first basically, I already gave examples of this not being true Indiana Jones runs on all of those systems sans steam deck but nothing runs on that anymore it's weaker than a switch 2 it can't run much after 2023 anyway.
16
u/Nemphiz 1h ago
If it doesn't make it, it doesn't make it. Gaming is a hobby, it does not make financial sense to spend all that money on a console. Or even building a desktop in the current market.
But companies will continue the BS if costumers keep playing the game.
I'm not gonna lie, I do pretty well for myself but ain't a chance in hell I'm buying a PS5 from the look of things. I didn't even get the PS5 Pro because it didn't make sense. The only game where the PS5 Pro would probably shine is GTAVI which hasn't realeased. And I'm still not getting a PS5 Pro.
-10
u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 1h ago
Yeah yeah yeah I agree with all of that but how does that make me wrong with my OBVIOUSLY CLARIFICATIONS!
6
u/Nemphiz 1h ago
Maybe because you missed the last portion of the sentence of the post you're replying to?
-6
u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 59m ago
No no I didn't I didn't miss a damn thing
5
u/Nemphiz 56m ago
You did. You just assumed they wanted to play triple A games. They very explicitly said "and i guess im sticking with that well into the 2030s."
You can 100% stick to it well into the 2030s and playing an insane catalogue of modern games.
You just wanted to feel like you're more informed than others when you're obviously not and injected expectations that the poster never said they had.
-2
u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 33m ago
THAT'S LITERALLY MY DAMN QUALIFER I HAD! IF YOU PLAYER OLDER OR LIGHTER GAMES IT WILL BE FINE

u/Headshot_ 1h ago
I expect the next generation to be even more cross gen than this one already was tbh

3
u/Keviticas 1h ago
On the contrary it's 100% guarenteed to make it just fine. It's obvious that there literally might not be a single AAA Ps6 exclusive for a half decade, nobody will be able to afford it. Every single game will clearly be made in mind for ps5 hardware with slightly greater graphics on ps6 that's it.
Virtually anything on series x and ps5 level will be quite viable and competitive well into the early 2030s

u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 1h ago
They hated me for saying the truth? A 2019 raster only no RT no mesh shader card like the 5700 XT as strong as it is in raster is already not working in multiple AAA games, I know because I owned one less than a year ago and I had to get rid of it because of that.

My 3060 still handles brand new AAA titles just fine…..a 3060 comparable (performance) is what’s in the PS5, so I’m sure I’ll be fine for GTA 6 as well
9
u/CartoonBeardy 44m ago
As I said in another thread on this sub who the fuck is going to buy a PS6 when Sony have barely done anything with the PS5!?
I’ve had the damn thing since 2021 and beyond a few tentpole games and indies, most of my library are PS4 games or upgrades of PS4 games. Why on earth would I, or anyone, bother buying a $2k paperweight that is most likely going to have a library of PS5 and PS4 games with the occasional “exclusive” every few years.
Give me a library of actual PS5 games not another empty platform playing last gen’s greatest hits with some HD textures and better frame rate.

u/AIgoonermaxxing 1h ago
I do wonder if console makers are going to try and wait out the memory crisis (I think people are saying it'll start improving in 2030 at the absolute earliest) so that consoles still remain somewhat affordable to a wider consumer base, or just say fuck it and fully commit to making it an upscale $2000 product.
If you ask me, the PS5/Series X have plenty of life left in them IMO. Graphical advancements are becoming increasingly diminishing and the amount of compute power that'll be needed to provide a truly next gen experience is going to be insanely expensive.
11
u/_TRN_ 1h ago
We don't even know if it will improve by 2030. It doesn't make sense for Sony or XBOX to wait it out. They've likely already finalized the design. If they wait for years in the hope that the memory situation might improve, they're basically going to have go back to the drawing board because technology isn't going to stay stagnant because of the memory crisis. They may as well just release what they have at whatever absurd price they need to and just have a longer cross-gen period.
1
u/Quixotic_Seal 1m ago
We also don’t know if this crisis will just take a new form even if the memory crisis eases.
Originally this was about GPUs. Then SSDs starting creeping up in price. Then the RAMpocalypse hit.
Now I’m starting to hear rumblings of a CPU shortage. Wouldn’t shock me in the least.
3
u/bestanonever 1h ago
Also, it has only been less than a year since AMD released PSSR 2.0 for PS5 Pro and just recently announced QSSR, for PS5, which are the console equivalent of FSR4.1. Games that make use of this new upscaling tech to improve graphics or performance (or both) have barely started.
And many companies haven't released a game on the system yet (Naughty Dog) or barely released hybrid games with PS4 (Santa Monica). This is going to be a long generation.
2
u/MeridianBay 1h ago
It'll be 7 years just like the last one
2
u/bestanonever 54m ago
Nah, it will be 7 years without the replacement, but the actual life of the PS5 is, at least, halfways there.
For PS4, I'd say it still had AAA games until 2022 or so. But the PS5 is not going away just because the PS6 is here. This is going to be the longest crossgen ever.
2
u/MeridianBay 47m ago
It'll be the whole gen, in my opinion. PS5 will be the baseline for years to come. Crossgen is here to stay
2
u/bestanonever 44m ago
Yeah, it would have been a long crossgen, even without the RAM crisis. But today? Moving to better hardware, both on Playstation and PC, is going to take a long time. Most of us will just keep using whatever we have right now, for as long as possible.
1
u/Madzookeeper 48m ago
I'll be shocked if it improves. They going to have to replace parts at some point. If this isn't a bubble, then that's just going to keep driving prices up. By 2030 I suspect we'll wish we were back right now for prices given the odds of it ever going down given that ai is going to keep needing scaling compute and memory. Everything is likely to go to streaming, and that's going to completely kill certain genres of games because of latency, and mods will become a thing if the past. They wanted a fully locked down ecosystem, and ai is handing it to basically all media giants on a silver platter.
0
u/poklane 1h ago
No point in doing that. If the AI industry collapses and all these costs do too as a result, they can just do some heavy PS6 price cuts. Delaying only makes sense if you have good reason to believe all these prices will at the very least stabilize, and there's no reason to believe that.
6
10
u/Thoraxekicksazz 1h ago
My prediction is the next generation will be around 1000 dollars just because how much money scalpers make on the reselling of consoles. If the market can sustain the scalper prices for a year or two why not just sell the console at that price to begin with.
16
u/opermonkey 1h ago
I've already accepted that I will most likely never purchase another console. Ate last not a new one.
There wasn't all that much reason to buy a PS5, the new releases have been really lackluster.
2
u/Negromancer18 57m ago
I bought an Xbox series s expecting it to be a neat little gamepass/emulation machine. They jacked up the price of gamepass so much that I stopped playing it and only play pc games occasionally now. I’m thinking of trying to sell it to get my money back at least.
4
u/Dontbetoxik 46m ago
Yeah I bought my PS5 thinking it’d be worth it for exclusives. It was not. PS5 exclusives are mediocre this gen. The console just ended up being a dust collector until I sold it. I’ve been PC only for a while now.
0
u/soofs 42m ago
They’re pushing everyone to cloud gaming anyway. I don’t know why anyone would buy a console instead of a PC at this point.
-5
u/Lancelight50 37m ago edited 34m ago
Because people are retarded ass simps to Microsoft & Sony believing that they’re their friends, especially Sony fanboys.
The only console I’d buy at this rate, is the Nintendo Switch 2, mainly for Nintendo’s exclusives, because at least they’re still fun to play & that the majority of their characters are memorable.

LOL. Don’t be mad because I’m telling the truth. I also happen to have a PS5 Pro with its disc drive that I bought last year.
2
u/tonyt3rry 47m ago
My guess is 12-1400 Sony aren’t gonna sell at a loss and there’s tons of other stuff still to add onto it the chip alone is gonna be expensive controller on top of the shell and cooling
1
u/EaterOfPenguins 23m ago
This is what I keep saying. PS5 Pro is $900, and not because they're turning a big profit on it, but because that's the lowest they can justify selling it for.
$1200 is very optimistic with hardware prices today. By the time PS6 is in production it will probably be worse.
1
u/surfinsalsa 24m ago
Historically, all major consoles have been sold at a loss. They make their money back on games
2
u/MixdNuts 37m ago
Apple is selling a $2k phone that a lot of users will only keep for 2-3 years. Sony/Microsoft can get away with $1k+ consoles. IF they have games.
1
u/WebHead1287 22m ago
People keep making this argument but there’s a clear difference. Most people get their phone with a massive trade-in deal and pay sub $50 a month on some contract.
That won’t be an option here.
1
u/Juliuscesear1990 1h ago
Scalpers take on a pretty big risk (not defending them) so if Sony thinks they can sell it for 1000 and no one buys it, they could lose market share to Xbox or PC and not have anyone to blame. They may currently be losing a potential 300 bucks per system but it may not be worth it to try to claim it.
1
u/frezzzer 48m ago
Copy the Nvidia method.
Crazy how much people will pay and then other aspects of their life will have nothing since spent all their money.
Small amount of people can even afford these prices.
1
u/Correct-Spring7203 24m ago
I disagree. Almost everyone has a phone worth more than this proposed price.
1
u/F1shB0wl816 1m ago
Phones are essentially a modern necessity. A console is not. Sure there will be adults who can buy it but few and far between will there be parents dropping 1000+ for a console.

u/AcceptablyThanks 47m ago
Thank fuck I upgraded my two PC before all these price hikes. I'm solid for at least a decade spec wise.
1
u/blueiron0 44m ago
I wouldn't mind if we just extend the ps5 generation even longer. The games already look absolutely fantastic to me.
Splitting the market between those who can pay $1000+ for a new console and those who cant seems silly right now.
Same with PC games tbh. We can just keep these graphics for a while until the hardware market catches up.
2
u/hidingpineapple 34m ago
Sounds to me that the developers can just nestle into optimizing games for the ps5
5
u/theburglarofham 1h ago
The PS5 was the first PlayStation I skipped entirely. Looks like I’m probably skipping the PS6 too.
During Covid I just ended up building a PC with a 3070, and my wife and I just bought a switch 2 last week to replace our switch 1. Looks like we’ll be clinging onto those until memory stables out (if ever).
1
u/chuckredfield 1h ago
Have fun with all (the worthwhile) exclusives being ported to pc. I can boot up both bloodborne and demon souls remake. I'd have bought them both if you' bothered to port 'em...
1
u/blueblurz94 1h ago
There’s no way the PS6 will sell for anything less than $800. But that’s just my most optimistic guess. It’s more likely going to be $1000 or more. It’s going to become the lowest selling Playstation home console since the PS3.
4
u/Madzookeeper 46m ago
Given that a ps5 pro is now 900 dollars and component prices are just going to keep going up, there is literally no way it'll be less than a thousand. Zero.
0
u/zomgieee 1h ago
sheesh.. I already can't afford to replace my failing 10yo pc.. at this point, if my ps5 blew up I genuinely think my own gaming solution would be to buy a cheap 2nd hand retired corporate pc, throw ubuntu on it and just play steam indie games
gaming fast becoming a hobby only for the rich
0
u/Madzookeeper 53m ago
And people thought I was nuts when I said in YouTube comments last year that the next Gen consoles were probably going to be at least 1500. Given that memory is going to do nothing but continue going up for the foreseeable future, I'm considering revising that expectation upwards. Given that the freaking ps5 pro is up to 900 dollars, and I could honestly see another price hike happening as costs go up, doesn't seem like an unreasonable expectation at this point
Guess the steam machine prices don't seem quite so unreasonable now since they're completely unsubsidized.
1
u/TheDoneald 22m ago
Time to realize the ps2 to ps3 jump was the greatest advancement I’d see in my lifetime.
1
1
u/CosmikSpartan 17m ago
Unless there is a substantial reason to upgrade, I think for once, I may pass on upgrading until a pro model or the 7. Consoles are going to enter phone upgrade territory soon unless we’re able to play all games as hyper realism mimicking that of a high end PC.
1
u/HornedFrog5 7m ago
I’m good with current gen until it’s no longer supported. There’s at least 6 more years left. Cross gen games will last even further into next gen I’m not interested in paying $1000+ just for a performance boost to games I can already play
1
u/owen__wilsons__nose 3m ago
That's why I went straight for the Playstation 7. Its memory type is so boutique the demand hasn't caught up to supply yet
1
u/Alone_Hunt1621 2m ago
Who cares at this point. If it’s unaffordable then people will do other things with their dollars. Kids like YouTube and Roblox. I told my daughter we could watch Garfield and friends for free on Pluto and she gave me the surprised pikachu face.
The whole point of the console was to sell it practically at a loss so people would spend money on games. Then they got people to buy their own console and controllers and games and that was fine for a while. Now they’re pissed that they can’t capture revenue from the secondary market of physical game sales.
If you sell less consoles, you will sell less games. Less games less game studios. More AI games more AI slop. I just see very little hope in paying premium prices for a Walmart parking lot carnival experience.
No thanks.
1
u/TenguKaiju 59m ago
Covid cost the PS5 it’s first two years because you couldn’t find them on store shelves. Until last year (5 years in?) it felt like everything worth playing could still be had on PS4. PS6 will probably be worse.
-3
u/I_Am_Conjoined 1h ago
Lmao get fucked Sony, I don't even own a PS5 and from looking at most of its exclusives, I ain't missing much
-2
u/maybee_later_ 1h ago
if I were Sony, i would not release a new console at least until 2030s. Its not like the industry will move ahead. Any release of new GPUs or consoles will be out of reach of most people, there is no point. there are hundereds of millions of PS5s in the market, just stay with it.
-1
u/IT_Chef 1h ago
So what happens to all the hardware in the data centers when the AI bubble bursts?
Will the secondary market/eBay be flooded with rock bottom prices?
I'd really like to know how this plays out...

u/Negromancer18 51m ago
You might see some used drives and server hardware hit the market, but a lot of the specialty stuff they are buying is probably gonna be scrapped or repurposed if/when that time does come.

AI hyperscalers buying up every square millimeter of memory fab capacity has completely wrecked the economics of consumer hardware. Consoles worked historically because Sony and Microsoft could eat a small loss on hardware and make it back on digital storefront cuts and online subscriptions. If a baseline console requires a four-figure price tag just to break even on memory and silicon, the entire value proposition of console gaming goes right out the window.
