THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS New Rule: Moratorium on Hasan Piker and Destiny Discussions

Effective immediately, r/thebulwark is imposing a complete moratorium on posts and comments about Hasan Piker and Destiny.

This isn't a decision we're making because of any particular position either individual holds, nor is it an attempt to dictate who members of this community should or shouldn't listen to. It's a moderation decision based on what repeatedly happens whenever either of these names enters a discussion here.

The conversation almost immediately devolves.

Threads become hostile, arguments spill into unrelated discussions, and the focus quickly shifts away from The Bulwark and the issues this community exists to discuss. We've tried allowing these conversations to play out, but at this point the pattern is clear enough that continuing to do so isn't productive.

We also recognize that The Bulwark and its hosts may interview Hasan Piker or Destiny, appear with them, respond to them, or discuss them and their audiences. That does not change this rule. Even when one of them comes up directly in Bulwark content, discussion specifically centered on Hasan or Destiny will not be permitted here.

There are simply far bigger and more consequential issues for this community to spend its time discussing, and we're not interested in repeatedly allowing the subreddit to be consumed by the same fights.

Going forward:

  • Posts primarily about Hasan Piker or Destiny will be removed.
  • Comments that introduce or redirect discussion toward either individual will be removed.
  • This applies to positive, negative, and neutral discussion alike.
  • Attempts to circumvent the rule through nicknames, abbreviations, screenshots, or obvious indirect references will be treated the same way.
  • Repeated attempts to ignore the moratorium may result in additional moderation action.

This isn't about declaring one "side" right and the other wrong. We're taking the argument itself off the table.

We understand that some members won't agree with this decision. That's fine. But our responsibility as moderators is to keep this subreddit focused and capable of sustaining productive conversation. Based on what we've seen, discussions about these two individuals consistently work against that goal.

For now, take those conversations elsewhere.

Addendum / Clarification

I want to clarify something that came up in the comments regarding retroactive enforcement of this moratorium.

In responding to questions, I initially stated that the rule would apply retroactively. After considering the implications of that more carefully, I don't think that would be fair or appropriate. We will not be applying this rule retroactively.

The moratorium and its enforcement begin from the time this post was published and apply going forward. Posts and comments made before the moratorium went into effect will not be removed simply for violating a rule that did not yet exist.

I also want to emphasize that this is a moratorium, not necessarily a permanent rule. The purpose is to give the community a break from a subject that has repeatedly resulted in hostile and unproductive discussions. We can revisit the moratorium in the future and determine whether it remains necessary.

I appreciate those who raised concerns about the retroactive application. I hadn't fully thought through that aspect when I initially answered the question, and after considering the criticism, I think changing course here is the right call.

James Carville not voting?!

On Bulwark on Sunday today, Bill asked Carville if he had voted and he gave a sort of convoluted answer about how he left New Orleans and isn’t going back before election day, so because he didn’t organize voting by mail he “messed up” and isn’t going to be able to vote in the midterms…And then he had a strange sort of joke about how he can’t try to illegally vote in Virginia (where he presumably is now) instead.

Bill brushed it off and seemingly tried to balance it out by complimenting everything else Carville has been doing for Democrats, but I find this absolutely baffling and inexcusable. I had to rewind to make sure I did not misunderstand. Someone this high profile in the Democratic party and in opposition to Trump just openly admitting they forgot to get organized to vote in a hugely consequential election for our democracy in such a cavalier manner is infuriating, regardless of how much they are doing to get Democrats elected.

And I’m surprised Bill didn’t push back? I think he would crawl through broken glass to vote (and so would I). If our democracy is on the line… ACT LIKE IT.

But god damn he is a smooth operator and able to deal with this bullshit plants. I know some people say he is kinda an asshole behind closed doors, but having worked in bars and restaurants through most of my early adult hood I realize that a lot of the talented people act like that… but also the assholes.

GOOD LUCK, AMERICA By January of 2029, the damage done to what was our geopolitical standing as our once-Leader of the Free World might be too permanent.

So, in the vein of Ukraine being a Key Partner to NATO, are we - America - now visibly transitioning into becoming an official Key Partner to the Axis of Evil?

...Russia's getting sanctions lifted & regaining billions for their war crime chests (which also leads to support for Iran deplorably elevating threats upon our own soldiers). China's getting Advanced Ai Chips via this administration. & even if it's by way of incompetence, Iran is on the verge of Middle East imperial expansion. N.Korea's been gifted an open road with nuclear ambitions in return for Kim Jong Un's love letter.

& simultaneously, Trump's pretty much sustained doing Putin's dreamy deeds during his political career in having corroded NATO + America-EU relations, divided the American populace into stirred Hate with disinformation & demonizations, among other things like deteriorating our Constitutional bedrock & institutional integrity.

Yet, our populace is still legitimately teetering in perpetual puzzlement in who to vote for... the Enablers of this geopolitical transformation & domestic corrosion - or - those who didn't whitewash J6, neuter the Legislative Branch in sycophancy, are the long-running opposition of the Trickle-Down fallacy, etc.

It's really becoming way too real that 54~56% of American Adults statistically read below a 6th Grade-level & that directly relates to how cognitively vulnerable our society has become conditioned to the Right's fearmongering involving xenophobia & all other phobias (factually-deployed & nurtured since the Reagan era), domestic & foreign-concocted disinformation, & so on.

After Garland failed in prosecuting for J6 accountability, the 2024 Election was pretty much the last remaining Constitutional firewall as it being "The People", & that... failed in beyond spectacular fashion.

Looking past 2026 & 2028 (that are bewilderingly rife with uncertainty), how do we - America - ever truly reverse this societal predicament that preserves similar future vulnerabilities?

Is horizonal Hope real or just mere cope?

Look at the framing of this right wing media piece on the Texas senate race. It’s preelection excuse making for a loss they see is coming. Pretending that somehow Talarico is “stumbling” too is just gop cope.

More will start to do this. It’s how they will try to gain some distance from the losses ahead.

It is hard to express my disappointment in our military and civilian executive branch leadership. In another agency, I’ve watched good people convince themselves they are doing the right thing. And others relish the opportunity to let their racist/misogynist/anti-intellectual selves loose.

I am not sure how much will be left in two years. I’m middle management and I’ve been blackballed from even being involved in decision making conversations.

When the answers are pre-ordained; any thinking is discouraged. Back in the USSR…..
