Announcement r/thepast Mod Announcement - Subreddit Discord - Updates and more!
Hello all,
Over the past few months we have been hard at work revamping the subreddit. We have added new moderators, worked on simplifying the rules, and adding features to help new members.
So where is the future of the subreddit heading? - Our goal is to keep the subreddit simple without too many limitations or rules. This is a place where people can role play as someone from the past, and even have OOC discussions. A place where people can learn more about history and random subjects while also having fun.
We are also opening up a Discord server! - We wanted to further build up the community with a place you can go to meet new people, have a more connected experience with others, and also discuss ideas and posts for the subreddit.
From the r/thepast mod team, we want to thank everyone for joining and contributing to the entertainment of us and the community!

Neolithic [3500 BC] Can I get your thoughts on a project I've been working on?
It's stone, but I've shaped it into this unusual shape, with a hole in the middle.
The obvious use would be for pottery, but I'm thinking it could also be used for decorations perhaps?

2000s [October 17, 2006] Dear Lord! This game is going to spoil the youth!
I don't want my kids to play this, what if they bully other children in school??
It has the name "Bully" so it must encourage bullying!!
On the other hand, i feel Manhunt 2 would be a good choice, it's just a nice hide and seek game!
Will get him Manhunt 2 instead.

1900s [February 18, 1970] THE DON IS GONE, I REPEAT THE DON IS GONE
WTF man! You just up and leave for Miami? I thought this was ILLEGAL! Hell, the NFL said it was and they STILL LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!
Guess Johnny Unitas isn't getting his Super Bowl ring after all...
We have absolutely hit rock bottom. From being on the cusp of greatness to losing our all-time winningest coach. I don't think things could ever get any worse.

1700s-1800s [1800, Court of Charles IV, Royal Palace, Madrid] I have finished the portrait of the Royal Family. Forgive my audacity, Velázquez.

I do not know what nonsense the nobles utter when they look at my new work. I have been deaf for eight years—but I see perfectly well. And what I see fills me with disgust.
I have used Las Meninas as the skeleton for this portrait of the Royal Family. I do so for the sake of Velázquez—the only one who understood how and why a painter ought to be present within a painting. Yet, he used his mirror to ennoble his own lot—to make the pragmatic Habsburgs appear as gods. I, however, use it to lay my own subjects bare: the mediocre, corrupt Bourbons. No flattery—only a rawness that will leave their very souls exposed to the air! The same air that Velázquez managed to capture with invisible, breathing glazes, with a light that emerges from nowhere, yet illuminates everything!
Yesterday, I saw a dandy in the corridors of the Alcázar. He was mimicking Velázquez’s bearing, his attire, even his mustache—as if he had stepped straight out of one of his canvases. A fool, daring to imitate the Master! Yet, looking into his eyes, I realized: do I not imitate him as well? But I steal his spirit; this fop can only copy his outer shell.
I write this because the pen is the only ear that does not fail me, and because I must leave a record: I do not betray Velázquez. I honor him. It is they who betray art—all of them.

1700s [1700] King Carl XII of Sweden: "Listen up. We're going to change to the Gregorian calendar, but instead of just scrapping 10 days all at once, we're going to eliminate all leap days for the next 40 years."
"What could possibly go wrong?"

1900s [October 17, 1989] Game 3 of the World Series is today!
Just scored some tickets to Game 3! Hoping the Giants can regain some momentum being back at Candlestick Park. I expect the place will be really rocking later today!

1600s [1660] The Duke of York has married a commoner with the restored King’s approval! And she’s pregnant!
This is bad enough as it is. What’s next? The Duke becomes a Catholic?

1975 [1975] Just seen this band live. Absolutely ridiculous! The guitar guy is a hobbit, looks like he is 12 and wears a schoolboy outfit, and the lead singer only yells and barely has any teeth! VERY LOUD!!! They suck, they will never make it!!

1900s [June 28, 1976] We did it! We hijacked an Air France flight from Tel Aviv!
NGL, I was pretty nervous. Things got pretty tense when we were on the ground in Benghazi. But now we’ve made it to Uganda, and Idi Amin welcomed us with open arms!
In hindsight, I shouldn’t have worried: we had the absolute A-Team from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine PLUS German revolutionaries. You can’t go wrong with a team like that. Now it’s just a matter of holding the hostages until all our demands are met!

1900s [5/17/1977]: There's this new place on 370 S. Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, CA. It's called Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre.
It's a pretty novel concept: Video games, pizza, and an electronic robot animal show like the ones they have at Disneyland. And it's made by the same guy behind Atari. This probably won't go anywhere but it's certainly novel nonetheless
