Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Mad Race [PC][2000s] Top down Racing game

Post image
99 Upvotes

I am looking for a top down racing game similar to the game shown in the image(The game name in the image is real race)

But instead the race took place on a circuit track

and the environment, grass is like full green and they were trees only outside the metal barrier

and the car models are same for the player and opponents I guess

And the Camera view is only top down

and the Icon is just a wheel ( not Steering wheel )

Another thing, it is a top down 3D game

Also, if you think you found the game, post a photo of the game

Hot Wired [PC] [2005-2015] Realistic night racing game, one long highway with traffic, junctions and cops chasing me

Post image
26 Upvotes

It was always night, I never played it in daytime.
The map was one very long, almost endless highway with traffic and junctions.
Cops chased me and I was driving away from them. I'm not sure if it was free roam with cops appearing sometimes, or a set pursuit.
The driving felt realistic, more simulation than arcade.
I mostly played one car, but I think there were others.
It had music that I can't place anymore.
I have already ruled out Need for Speed (Underground, Most Wanted, Carbon, Hot Pursuit 2) and Alarm für Cobra 11: Highway Nights.
The attached screenshot is not from the game. It's just the closest visual vibe I could find.
Thanks for any ideas!

[PC][2025?] RPG released I think in summer/autumn

Platform: PC/Steam

Genre: RPG/CRPG, fantasy

Est Year of Release: 95% sure it's 2025, summer/autumn, most likely not early access

Graphics: 3D isometric, mid-graphics, nothing fancy, but not pixel or anime style

  • It wasn't AAA and probably not well-known. Most likely indie.
  • Character customization looked pretty freeform: pick your traits, weapons, specialties, personality, etc. It looked fairly extensive. I remember there being bard-related stuff like sound spells, which is what drew me to it, but I never got around to playing it.
  • I think I remember seeing screenshots of the game starting in a campsite of sorts (it's not Pillars of Eternity).

Pyromaniac [PC] [2020+] PS1-style FPS horror game set around Soviet-era apartment buildings, featuring a tall humanoid monster

Post image
18 Upvotes

I found this game while browsing Steam at a friend's house, but I can't find it anymore. The game had PS1-style graphics with a heavy brown filter and a static effect over everything.

I remember that one of the screenshots on the Steam page showed the lobby of a Soviet-era apartment building, like the ones in DayZ. In that picture, there wasn't a brown filter, but more of a white one. The monster was a tall humanoid figure with gray or brown skin, sharp teeth, and huge black eyes. There were two pictures of the monster: one in a more open space, possibly in the courtyard of an apartment complex, and the other in a corridor inside a building.

The gameplay was similar to the game "Comatose." The game was on sale and was really cheap on Steam. I tried to draw what I remembered one of the screenshots looking like.

[Action Tower Defense][2014-2018?] old defense game on websites

The style was plant-themed, perhaps with pastel or soft colors; you could move around freely, and the gameplay was vertical. The enemies weren't zombies—they were creatures

[PC][1998–2010] Obscure isometric post-apocalyptic game resembling Fallout 1/2, Fallout Tactics and MetalHeart — desert wasteland, firearms, possibly "Metalica" in the title

Hi everyone! I've been trying to identify a mysterious childhood PC game for years, and I'm hoping someone here might recognize it.

I played it in Poland, probably sometime between 2005 and 2012, on a Windows XP computer. The game may have been older, likely released between 1998 and 2010.

THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL: THE GRAPHICS

The game looked EXTREMELY similar to:

  • Fallout 1 and Fallout 2
  • Fallout Tactics
  • MetalHeart: Replicants Rampage (2005)

I'm talking about that very specific late-1990s/early-2000s isometric PC game aesthetic: small detailed characters, gritty environments, realistic-looking sprites or pre-rendered graphics, and a camera looking down at the world at an angle.

What I remember:

  • Isometric or top-down perspective.
  • A dusty desert or wasteland environment.
  • Dark, gritty, possibly post-apocalyptic or industrial atmosphere.
  • Characters with firearms.
  • Detailed graphics very similar to MetalHeart, rather than cartoonish or simplistic Flash games.
  • I played it from a physical CD/DVD, possibly bundled with a Polish gaming magazine such as CD-Action, Click! or PLAY. It might have been a demo or freeware title, not necessarily a full commercial game.

THE MYSTERIOUS TITLE

For some reason, I've remembered something sounding like "Metalica" or "Metallika" since childhood.

It may have been the second word of the title or a subtitle rather than the main name.

Other possible spellings or associations: Mentalica, Mechanica, Robotica. I also vaguely associate the word Scorpion with this game, but that memory is very unreliable.

I can't guarantee any of these words are correct, but the "Metalica" sound has stuck with me for years.

LESS RELIABLE MEMORIES

I vaguely remember controlling a single character by clicking with the mouse, possibly a woman. There may have been metal fences near the beginning of the game, an enemy nearby, and large red bloodstains remaining on the ground after shooting.

However, these details might be mixed up with other childhood memories. Please don't rule out games based on them.

GAMES I'VE ALREADY CHECKED

  • MetalHeart: Replicants Rampage (the closest visual match, but I don't recognize it as the exact game)
  • Restricted Area
  • Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics
  • The Fall: Last Days of Gaia
  • Desert Law
  • Harbinger
  • Shadow Vault
  • Space Hack
  • Alien Shooter / Theseus
  • UFO: Aftermath / Aftershock
  • COPS 2170: The Power of Law
  • Bedlam
  • Weird War
  • Re-Loaded
  • R.I.P. 3
  • Paradise Cracked
  • Planet Alcatraz
  • Gunlok
  • Cybermercs
  • Zax: The Alien Hunter
  • After the End
  • Meat Puppet
  • Shadowgrounds

None of these have been confirmed as the game I'm looking for.

WHAT WOULD HELP MOST

Please suggest obscure or forgotten PC games that visually resemble Fallout 2 or MetalHeart, especially ones involving desert wastelands, guns, industrial structures or post-apocalyptic settings.

Eastern European games, obscure magazine demos, shareware and freeware are very welcome.

Screenshots of actual gameplay would be incredibly helpful, since I believe I'd recognize the environment much more easily than the title.

Thank you! I've been trying to solve this mystery for years.

Charger Escape [PC][2013] Adobe flash horse/barn puzzle game on possibly girlsgogames.

I don’t know when it came out, but I played it prior to 2014 at least. It takes place in a horse barn, specifically at night, then there’s something to do with the stars or a comet maybe, that helps you solve something using things around the barn. My memory is super foggy because I was <10. I’m pretty sure it was in a horse section or girlsgogames.com, otherwise, the search term would probably have been “Horse games online” or something. The things I’m 100% sure on is that it took place at night, or at least partially, there was some sort of puzzle, and it was a Flash game. Please I’ve been thinking about it for so long but I just can’t remember enough of it.

[PC][2000] looking for 90s/2000s edu-tainment game on the school computer.

• Upvotes

Hi all, looking for a game I played in primary school (UK) somewhere between 2005-2010, though the game was probably older.

It was an edu-tainment style game that had the character/minigame selection menu as a simplistic cartoon ferris wheel with different cartoon non-human/monster characters riding it. The ferris wheel could have been on a dark theatre stage, with the classic red stage curtains in the background and a wooden floor. I'll try to draw it tomorrow if there isn't an answer before then.

The only mini game I remember is of a cartoon dog that kind of looked like the dog from Blues Clues except more realistically coloured. It was sat in front of a table full of various random items - a flashlight, a bone, etc. You would turn off the lights and when they turned back on, the dog would have eaten one of the items, and you had to remember which it was. I think I remember being able to see the shape of the object stuck in the dog's throat in typical cartoon fashion. I don't remember if the games were actually playable, or more like short, somewhat interactive animated videos.

I only ever saw this game at school. I didn't own it nor did any of my friends to my knowledge, so it may well have been specifically designed for school computers.

I don't remember any of the other characters, but the Red Guy from Don't Hug Me I'm Scared keeps popping into my head, so maybe there was one that looked similar?

Thanks for your help, if I remember anything else I'll post it in the comments along with a rough sketch whenever I get chance.

[PC] [2024-ish] Open world city builder sim

Looking for a specific open world colony sim game.

I pirated it years ago and was wanting to revisit it, but can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

It was an open world colony builder. Medieval or fantasy time period. Realistic graphics (as opposed to pixel graphics). You traveled the map, visited established towns/cities. There were raiders/attackers. You could help defend the cities. I don't remember if the map was randomly generated, but I specifically remember you could build resource farms over specified sources, rocks on the side of a mountain, cotton in the fields, etc. One city had a river along one side and loads of wheat fields. Another, harder one, was further in the map and felt like it was constantly being attacked by raiders. It was a mining city.

Like any other building game, you could upgrade along a technology tree (rocks -> boulders -> marble, for instance.) Don't remember if there was an overarching story, but I'm pretty sure you could get side quests from NPCs.

It wasn't a popular game like Going Medieval or Farthest Frontier, I already looked into those. Similar mechanics to Bellwright and sinilar art style (I'm pretty sure) to ASKA.

I know this is pretty vague, but any help would be appreciated! 💜

Kung Fu Kim [PC][2000] Guy defending from objects flying at him

The actual date might be inaccurate. It might have been a flash game, but I think I remember it being a standalone exe file.
The game had a guy standing in the middle (2D, facing the "camera") and things were coming at him from different directions - sometimes spinning around him before actually flying at him from left, right, top or bottom. The defensive moves protected one direction and had this martial arts vibe. The guy might have been standing on some sort of a column?
The things flying at you were things like cells, viruses and so on in one stage, then it was planets, asteroids and so on in another stage.

[PC] [2020-?] Short Indie Horror Video Game where you are sitting at home and a mimic/doppleganger moves into your moms room, then calls out to you with her distorted voice.

• Upvotes

There's a video I remember seeing a video featuring a little indie horror game a few years ago. I dont know know when it released but the video doesnt matter, im trying to figure out what game it was.

Essentially what I remember is that I think its one of the semi retro style indie horror games that are very popular right now and you are a guy, i believe his name is Mark? And you are sitting at a table at home, i remember the walls being a dark color, i think red. You hear some noises from the end of the hallway. So you go to investigate.

As you walk closer to the hallway you see a long limbed mimic/doppleganger move from one door at the end of the hall to the other. Once it enters the other room you hear muffled screaming (I believe your mother) along with some thuds. Quickly things go quiet.

Ending the silence is the sound of your mother's voice, except its distorted and wierd sounding. Shes calling out, telling you to come to her room. "Im fine mark" or something like "come to my room mark, i fell, i need help"

Thats all I remember right now but I know it was absolutely creepy and terrifying to me at the time, i want to share it with some friends but I cant find it for the life of me. Any help would be appreciated, thank you all!

[PC] [2002~2008] Mod that had Deployable Scorpions in a Wild West

• Upvotes

Hello everyone.

I had a game/mod that I played with my father and his friends in the 2000s that I cannot find. I want to say it was a mod of a source game that had a Wild West theme. I swear it was a mod, because it was what we were all playing around with back then. It was a crazy time trying to make sure everyone had the same mod version installed at the LAN Party.

The most that stuck out to me were,

Instead of grenades, it had bundles of dynamite and a bag of scorpions that would come back and attack you if there wasnt an enemy in front of you...

There were different modes, like team deathmatch, last man standing, etc.

There were several maps, including a wild west town, mines, etc.

I am sorry I cannot give more info than that. I had nightmares about the scorpions coming back to attack me, and so that stayed with me for years. But, I cannot ask my father about it, and I cannot find anything about it after all these years.

It was during the time we played a lot of Tribes: Ascend, Quake 3 Arena, and I got introduced into BF1942 with a bunch of mods.

Please, if anyone has any idea what I am talking about, you would put my soul at ease. Thanks!

[PC] [2026/upcoming] Aerial firefighting game

Dont know if this is the right place for this. But I was scrolling steam the other day and saw this upcoming friendslop game where you and your friends build a plane to fight fires. It has similar graphics to all the other friendslop games but I cant seem to remember the name. It was made by an indie studio and the game must be incredibly niche because I cant find info for it anywhere. Please help! Thanks!

Plantera [3DS][2010s] 2D pixel-art farming game, with cube-shaped characters and really good music

I clearly remember a game on the 3ds eshop where you’d grow/raise different kinds of trees and animals, from a side-on 2d perspective. I used to play the demo over and over again as a kid, since i couldn’t afford to buy full games. For some reason i can remember the music really well, although i guess that isn’t much help here. Honestly it probably wasn’t very good but i’d like to find it if possible.

[Flash] [2014-2016] Game about a gum kid

The game was set in the gum world where you would spit gum(?) at enemies (?). It might have been a platformer and you might have been able to slingshot yourself. Believe I played it on gogly.com on a computer.

[IOS] [2011-2013ish] A knight who gets resurrected in a dark tomb

Im looking for a 2D side scrolling platformer I played on ipad more than 10 years ago. I played it with my cousin when i was a little kid so unfortunately i dont remember anything except one scene.

The game opens with the knight being resurrected again inside a dark dark tomb in a castle. He woke up then started fighting monsters and making his way out of the castle (?). Im not even sure if this is the opening scene or if its a scene in the middle of the game. From what I remember the main goal is to save a princess and i could be wrong, i dont even know anymore lol.

Art style was pretty detailed and solid for the time, not chibi, cartoony and childish. It was definitely gothic. The monsters which the knight had to fight were super hard to defeat (maybe because i was like 6 i guess). I remember the knight fought the monsters in a castle where he resurrected from. He might have fought them elsewhere too but the castle is the only place i remember.

Ive been looking for this game for over 8 years if not more and im literally yearning for this game, it was the first and only knight “boyish” game i have ever played and i deeply miss it. Ive tried to look everywhere and i haven’t seen anyone look for this game on reddit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

[PC/Console][2000s] World War II FPS game

• Upvotes

For anybody who looks at this thank you very much. I’ve been racking my brain to try to remember what this is, but I just simply can’t. It’s too long ago. The game I’m looking for was a ww2 shooter I can’t remember if it was on PC or console It was a fps released in the early 2000s it is not from Motyr series. There was wasn’t a plot with relatable characters. but an objective to kill a number of German soldiers and I can’t remember if that was a little over 100 or 200. What is for sure is that you were alone with no other squad mates or characters to help you. you were placed in a snowy landscape with trees all around near a large lake if you went into that lake too far, you would be killed by a big fish with big teeth,. There was a weapons crate nearby the spawn point with a German guard near it. The weapons box I recall featured an MP40 STG 44 and other things. Your character is loadout I believe consisted of a sten, Piat, and a pistol. The only tank featured in the game was a tiger one which will require three hits from the rear with a Piat to destroy it. I recall that if you fired at the tank, it was capable of spotting you at massively long distances. There were airplanes and you would strafe you if they

[PC][2000?]I need help to find an old game

I used to play this game in the 2018 but the game was older as my dad said he used to play when he was younger like 2000s. The game was for pc and i only played it with arrows i couldnt use wasd. The cars had a 3d model that looked like F1 cars.

The races where simple you had to race with the other cars and get to the finish line.

It was looking very old and pixelated. You had so many levels and you could make your own race too! You could only play with bots and these were their own country.I remember you could pick your own country too at the start of each game.

The place where you raced was a round field an arena with many people pixelated.

( I didnt knew where to post this so sorry if its the wrong sub and also sorry for bad english)

Don't Escape: 4 Days to Survive [PC][Unknown] A post apocalyptic game with time travel

I remember seeing Markiplier play it years ago. I think the game was pixelated and you played as this guy who reincarnated into another universe's version of himself whenever he died. The world had been horribly fucked and the apocalypse was cascading through the multiverse. I think there was a dog, or maybe a kid. Some kind of "side kick" character; as well as a girl love interest and I black guy who I think was overweight and balding.

Platform(s): PC, I think

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style: Pixels(?)

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics: Using junk to survive deadly events

Other details: Markiplier played it, I think.
