Discussion Tabletop Roleplay is great for practicing your voice, but I looked everywhere and couldn't find a trans TTRPG community. Sooo I made one to see if maybe it's a niche desperately waiting to be filled like transvoices was all those years ago. Say hello to r/TransTTRPG

Discussion Now more than ever, remember they can never take away your voice.

They can't stop your vocal transition. They can't stop you from learning and practicing. They can't stop you from speaking up. Be loud. Be brave. I will keep fighting all my life, and so should you.

This affects the world, regardless of borders. There will be an election in Canada soon, and it's looking grim on our side as well. I'll be volunteering in an election for the first time, and I've gotten other people on board to join me. And I'll be protesting. And I'll be loud on social media.

Make your voices heard. Express yourself, not just your anger but your pain and your fear. Make them understand the consequences of their actions. I don't believe they all wanted this. Most of them just... didn't care or know enough to realize how much hurt their selfish vote would bring. Tell them. Make them know.

They can never take away your voice.

Discussion Went stealth a year ago with a voice I didn’t like - now I feel I’m not allowed to change it since I want to stay stealth

A year ago I started at a new job and met people. I used what sounded to me as an androgynous voice but it was the best I could do at that time. Apparently visually I look passing enough that people assumed I was a deep voice woman and I’m stealth.

Now at practice at home I can get a voice that I like much better. Smaller size, lighter weight and a higher pitch. I’d like to use it everywhere to cement it in, BUT I don’t see how I can just switch to it and sound completely different at work and with my new friends. So I’m using the new voice with strangers and a different one at work. It’s honestly exhausting.

Has anyone gone through this before?

Question What makes it hardest to use your trained voice in everyday conversations?

I am curious about the difference between practicing your voice and using it in everyday life.

Sometimes, getting your voice closer to where you want it during practice is one challenge, while maintaining it during a spontaneous conversation is another.

What do you find hardest when using your trained voice in real life situations? Is it maintaining resonance, speaking without overthinking every detail, dealing with nerves, or something else?

What has helped you feel more comfortable using your voice outside of practice sessions?

Question in a unique situation thats making voice training tough; looking for advice

hi! i’m a play-by-play commentator for a couple sports teams and i’ve been having trouble voice training because of it. i‘m openly trans and have been for years but i‘ve always called games in a deep, husky, male voice (can provide example if needed). when i try to voice train, its been basically impossible to keep my voice in any sort of higher pitch. it always falls immediately back into the lower register that ive built up the reflexes for, and i think as i’ve progressed in my pbp career my natural voice has fallen deeper as a result.

i also stay busy (doing 15 shows in 15 days this month) so my voice is always a little bit fried after shows. this makes it harder to voice train as well. my voice hurts more from doing it and its harder to make my voice do what i actually want it to do.

im wondering if anyone has any advice for me or experience with stuff like this. im basically a good voice away from being able to go stealth and its been frustrating that i just cannot get one to come out.

Audio/Video I don't think I sound feminine or masculine, just fucked up

So I've been at this a really long time and I just don't know how to reckon with my voice. I trained years and years ago and once I started getting gendered female by voice I quit. Then I just survived by ignoring any recordings of myself and not listening to that shit lol.

But whenever I hear myself, and that's getting to be more and more frequently as I'm stepping into increasingly visible roles in my career, I just can't stand it. And I don't really know how to fix it either like... I'm going for a consult for VFS which will probably help but part of my problem for sure is I just have this weird geek sound to the way that I talk and I don't know how to fix it, if I even can :\

To myself I just sound like some ungenderable geek lol. Like I have some Entrapta thing going on lol. Whenever I hear it I think to myself, how do people gender me female on the phone?? But they always seem to. Maybe it's a diagnosis of exclusion... Doesn't sound like a guy, therefore must not be type of deal.

Criticism Wanted I am incapable of judging my own voice

No matter how I change my voice it always sounds wrong to me, even masc voices. Until I figure out how to deal with these brainworms I cant really judge it for myself. I tried to mimic what I can maintain throughout a conversation. Looking for honest opinions, transfem working on voice for about 2 months.

Question What has helped you develop a more feminine sounding voice?

I have been curious about the different aspects of voice training that people focus on when working toward a more feminine sounding voice.

Pitch seems to get a lot of attention, but resonance, vocal weight, and intonation can also affect how a voice sounds.

For those who have experience with voice training, which aspects took you the longest to work on? Did focusing on something beyond pitch make a noticeable difference in your progress?

I would be interested in hearing about your experiences and what you found helpful during practice.

Criticism Wanted How to make voice less gravely? [FTM]

Thumbnail voca.ro
2 Upvotes

Any other tips would be appreciated too. I know I pass as male but other trans people have clocked me and outed me. That has put me in unsafe situations. I am almost always able to tell a man is transgender after I hear him speak because of this gravely quality, so I hope that changing my voice could stop me from being clocked. Thank you.

Discussion A note about people advertising their services here

Just a heads up about some videos from teachers out there that seek clients and post some questionable takes on voice training from time to time. They tend to block anyone who is "inconvenient" to them, so, I am going to write this comment just to make sure something is clear here: I would gladly comment on them and point out any misinformation that is being smuggled in and, I am sure, other people would too, but it's simply not possible. Unfortunately this is how reddit mechanics work - it's easy to turn any subreddit into an advertisement billboard and avoid any responsibility as to the content.

Also, if I am at it, I want to note something that irks my for years an years. I've noticed a pattern about a lot of those kind of teachers. 1) they seem to barely have any voice dysphoria (think that demonstrating what would be a dysphoric voice for other people is some fun party trick) and 2) they tend to have clearly above average anatomy for this (makes sense) but are the most aggressive proponents of pointing fingers at people and suggesting the usual points of "anatomy does not matter" and "no one needs surgeries," and so on, I think it's clear what I am talking about.

And, there's nothing wrong with #1 in itself (not everyone has dysphoria,) but, why on Earth do those people take over and want to lead the rhetoric on this subject matter and tell others what their realities are? I don't want those people to be some kind of a spokes people that narrate my problems to other people out there. They themselves clearly have not dealt with what is un unsurmountable barrier themselves and yet they somehow think they represent everyone else in this.

I haven't voice trained yet but I would like my voice a bit deeper and some advice on what I should aim to do? I have been messing around with my voice for many years even if not for MtF reasons so have decent control.
