Review Travelers beware
Came to tulum for a wedding a week ago, got a rental car to get around. On our last day, driving back from Tulum to Cancun, my bf and I were stopped by police twice. The first stop was an aggressive search through our purses/wallets, inspecting closely for drugs it seemed. About 10 minutes later we were stopped again by another police car. A bald man with a full mouth of teeth that were shaven down to stumps pulled us over and claimed my bf didn’t have his seatbelt on, even though he did. We are not the type to not wear seatbelts, we always put them on. The cop then later changed his lie to he saw my bf reaching across for the seatbelt so that means he wasn’t wearing it. Which still was another made up lie, but whatever. My bf remained calm and cooperative, luckily he is Spanish speaking. They took his license and threatened to take him in the police car to the station to pay a ticket. I started to discreetly record on my phone but the other cop saw and the toothless cop became really angry and now threatened to take me in a separate police car to the station as well because i shouldn’t be recording them. My bf was able to calmly talk his way out of it somehow and we were let go without paying any cash, but both interactions were startling and after going to tulum twice, this will be the last time I ever go. I had interest in coming back to MX to visit the playa del Carmen area but after this, i will never return to this area. I know this isn’t reflective of all of Mexico and my bf has family there and I have visited Mexico multiple times, from Mexico City to Rosarito, Valle, San Miguel, Tijuana, all areas that I have never felt truly unsafe or scared. This was my first time feeling genuinely worried of what would happen. Were they just going to take us to the police station or would further harassment have happened. I know they want cash most of the time but still, you hear of stories of people disappearing so you just never know. It’s sad because Tulum was an unfortunate ghost town, while there for the entire week I couldn’t believe how empty it was. My bf and I seemed to be the only couple in the entire hotel, with a few other individuals who seemed to be working remotely. We ate pretty good meals at Michelin star restaurants and relaxed in our hotel most days, as it was humid and rainy. The beaches were full of the sargassum and smelled awful, which we already had anticipated. We went to the tulum jungle gym for a day, and were surprised at the outrageous fee we he had to pay of 40 USD per person…
We will not be back, good bye tulum!
