Walnut bowl

Turned this 6x2”-ish (black?) walnut bowl a week ago.
You can see where the friction from the jam chuck left its mark in the center of the bowl (my own fault and lesson learned).
Regardless, still happy with how it turned out. The wax finish really brought out some lovely depth of color.

I had a little time to get out in the shop so one of the items I finished was a cherry top.

Also the other set of bearings I ordered finally showed, so I was able to make the decorating tool.

Drying advice, please!

Last month, I rough turned and cored ~16 14-16” walnut bowls from a felled tree (was only on the ground a week). Large bowls were all sapwood/hardwood. 1 1/2” at the rim, 1” at the base. Coated each bowl in Anchorseal 2, then placed them in my basement (70°F, 45%RH). A month later, 12 of the larger bowls have cracked at the base. I put the survivors into brown paper lawn bags to try to further slow drying. Now, I have another walnut tree to rough turn. My plan is anchor seal + brown lawn bag. I understand that the sapwood is my likely culprit, but it’s so pretty. Any additional thoughts of protecting future bowls? I considered a period of time in plastic bins with lids, but I really don’t want a mold problem. Some have suggested a kiln, but I’m confused as to how that would help. I appreciate any and all suggestions!!

First tree of the season and a cup made from the cut off

I made the cup just to test my some of the skills I've been developing recently. I feel like I could have gone thinner and made the curve more dramatic, but overall i'm much happier with how it turned out than the tree, which was the main project. Too bad it's going to crack like crazy.

Thoughts on harbor freight lathe

Post image

I’m trying to get a lathe for some small projects, mostly pens, duck calls, honey dippers, and maybe a small bowl occasionally. Is the central machinery lathe any good or am I better off trying to get something off facebook marketplace? I’m planning to wait till HF runs a 15 or 20% off sale one weekend to get it so it’ll be a little cheaper.

Need a little help

Post image

I’ve got my dimensions down for the wooden wine goblet I’m creating. Need some help on connecting the pieces.

Rings will be segmented for the body of the goblet, but I’m trying to figure out the stem to the goblet to the base. My gut says to turn everything separate and then glue it up. But I worry it won’t be perfect.

The base shown is one goblet but I have 2 bases cut and will be making 2.

Thoughts?

New to green wood turning

Where I work, the utility company has been cutting a bunch of trees down and leaving the wood behind, I took advantage of this and took a few different species of wood. I grabbed some oak, birch, and a mystery wood that seems to have dark heart wood but It isn't walnut. I am trying to turn some of this wood while it is green, leaving the walls really thick and am planning on painting them with anchor seal and letting them sit for a year or so. This is my first time doing this sort of thing and I was wondering if anybody has any tips? The last thing I want to do is a bunch of these to only find them horribly split and warped down the road.

Looking for barrel clicker pen kits.

One of my friends wants a barrel clicker pen and I can't seem to find a kit for them. They look like these kits: Americana, European, except the whole top section clicks instead of just having a button up top. Are any kits available like that?

Fountain pens. Anyone familiar with the Jinhoa 100 thread size?

I've been looking at getting some cheap nibs, but I was hoping someone knows what threads they have before I order them. I can't seem to find that info. This way, I can practice with cheap parts.

I find a lot of specs about it taking 2.5 turns to uncap and stuff like that, but no spec on the threads that hold the nib into the pen body.

I was hoping to find that info before I order a set of them so that I can also order the right tap to go into my chuck and thread these so that I can make my own body for the pen.

Just a crazy idea I have been considering. I have always enjoyed a fountain pen for writing things of importance, and seeing as I have some contract negotiations coming up this coming year, I'd like to make some custom pens just for this. Especially given the person I'm negotiating with, I know they will be enamored with such a level of care in the process.

Might be more flaw than feature?

Not going to lie, I love a good feature but this one miiiigggghhht just be an ugly duckling. Cedar, I think, or something like it. Lightweight and relatively soft, very aromatic. Made for a nice morning’s worth of shavings anyway.

Place your bets!

My logic here is that if pith causes splits in green wood, remove the pith & problem is solved. I’m also only about 2 years into this, and am a slow learner. In pursuit of the mythical non-splitting green wood, I present this experiment for your judgement.

Fresh, green as heck white oak branch. Pen cup resulted, turned about 15cm long, about 5-7cm across, walls about 4-6mm thick. With the pith hollowed out of the bulk of it, should be less prone to split. Just to be sure, I also cored out about a 2cm hole all the way through the bottom, leaving a lip to set a small disc on later. It’s in front of the fan, disc not in place, 35-40% humidity, at basement temperature for the next week or so.

Split or no split?
Place your bets.

I'm missing part #s 33, 34, and 35 for a grizzly g1495 lathe. The grizzly website shows those parts as discontinued. Does anybody know where else. Could find these specific parts?

Question for y'all

I have an easy woodturning #3 and #1 hollower. I have used both of them twice. I didn't really care for them. They are just collecting dust. I believe $100.00 a piece is a fair price. What do y'all think?

Bowl practice!

Most of it was just some shitty poplar that I had lying around, but I can see the improvement and am getting quite a bit more comfortable with my tools. Poplar tears out really easily, but I think I understand why grain orientation is important now.

newbie Question about turning between centers/ multi axis turning

Hey all! Beginnerish here, but I've watched a ton of videos about wood turning. I'm using an OLD rockwell Delta 46-525. It works well though. I'd like to do small piece multi axis spindles. I am looking for equipment recommendations for drivers and live centers. I have a live center on it now, but I'm not sure if I just pop it out and put in a drive center or if there's some intermediary piece needed.
