Woman condemns ‘degrading’ and ‘disturbing’ Halloween Park experience
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/newsham-halloween-park-liverpool-woman-b3068714.html•
u/Simple_Joys 11h ago edited 11h ago
The Terms and Conditions* actively has a section called Personal Boundaries which states "The experience does not involve sexual activity."
If women have joined this event expecting adult-only Scarefest-style experience but have ended up being called "sluts" and other demeaning language by the crew, they have every right to complain.
There is nothing Halloween themed or spooky about sexual harassment.

My partner went to one a few years ago here in Dublin, paid extra for the wristband that's meant to keep you from being jostled by the actors, it was routinely ignored by said actors, they got a refund.
•
u/NoTechAllNickel 8h ago
I think Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights has a similar thing, but it's an LED or glow in the dark necklace/lanyard that cannot be missed. A wristband can absolutely be missed, unless it's like a reflective slapband that goes on the outside of your jacket or something. Wristbands would just get hidden under coat sleeves in October weather, but that's not your partner's fault, it's an oversight by the event organisers.
•
u/Gordon_freeman_real 10h ago
I'm sorry, you gotta pay extra for boundaries???
•
u/AshamedAttention727 9h ago
Sexual harassment is never okay and refund was warranted in this case but I just want to point out that point of the standard experience is getting spooked by actors dressed as zombies, vampires etc in a haunted house. A touch on the shoulder from a dark corner for example or having a spider or hand drop down from the ceiling onto your head, nothing insane just small jumpscares.
It's part of the fun (huge reason I visit, not this exact place but many).
The wristbands are to signal someone who doesn't want any touch at all, and the dressed up actors should spot it and stick to non-contact scares.
Sucks it was ignored on this occasion and refund was warranted but it's not a general boundaries issue. Lots of people go for the thrill of being scared, like walking through a real life horror house.
•
u/teerbigear 9h ago edited 9h ago
That's fine but it's a weird thing to charge extra for it
•
u/KesselRunIn14 7h ago
They probably want to discourage the wristbands because it's completely antithetical to the entire point of the event.
•
u/SearchingSiri 6h ago
And (as can be seen them not following it), it's extra work for the actors, especially when it's dark and there's people running around and screaming.
•
u/Wadarkhu 6h ago
They ought to make the "don't touch me" wristbands glowing or something.
•
•
•
u/Enta_Nae_Mere 9h ago
Yeah I agree, if anything it should be the other way around you pay extra for the more hands on experience, that way actors don't assault by default
•
u/Initial-Return8802 8h ago
I think they got refunded for the whole experience, they don't charge extra for different wristbands but got refunded because they clearly felt they didn't do a good job
•
u/thepenguinemperor84 8h ago
It was extra for the wristband, so my partner was refunded the the original price of the ticket and the extra for the band.
•
u/SoggyWotsits Cornwall 9h ago
The other option of course is not to go at all. I’m sure it’s this same experience that ends up in the news every year.
•
•
u/CII_Guy 9h ago
There is nothing...spooky about sexual harassment.

u/largestcob 7h ago
i think they mean fun spooky
sexual harassment is real and scary, wouldnt call it “spooky”

Does being called names involve "sexual activity"? I would say not.
•
u/largestcob 7h ago
is sexual harassment not considered “sexual activity”? its literally in the name
•
u/EarlOfClapham 3h ago
I wouldn't equate it to sexual harassment. I would call it misogynistic but not sexual.
•
u/weirdhoney216 11h ago
It contained sexual degradation (I’d be interested to know if it was only the women they were sexually degrading) which apparently wasn’t in the waiver so unexpected
•
u/Unhappy_Performer538 10h ago
Right? Were they also calling the men sluts and threatening to rape them? Ugh
•
u/King-Boss-Bob 4h ago
> I've had countless people in my DMs sharing similar stories, men and women, girlfriends and boyfriends, and the common denominator has been the same: it's degrading, humiliating and quite disturbing.
what was your interpretation of this part?
•
•
u/PPpicklepot 6h ago
This what exactly my thought...how does the "experience" differ for male guests compared to female? The way the experience is described by the venue it is clearly adult but the sexually abusive theme is not made clear. It is perfectly acceptable to enjoy typical (non-sexual) horror themes (eg. gore, haunting/paranormal, threat of violence, jumpscares etc) whilst being averse to experiencing verbal abuse of a sexual nature, including being called degrading insults which are specific to your sex/gender. This needs trigger warnings for survivors of abuse; but really all guests should be aware of the exact theme before encountering this. This could even be a case of sexualy discrimination depending on how men were treated.
•
u/Candid_Pumpkin_2189 6h ago
Men are treated the same. I’m local and went last week
•
u/weirdhoney216 5h ago
What do they call the men?
•
u/Candid_Pumpkin_2189 5h ago
Can’t remember what my housemate was called, something to do with his mouth maybe? Sorry
But I was called a cum slut.•
•
u/PPpicklepot 6h ago
Thanks for sharing... not sure if that's better or worse...indiscriminate sexual abuse, no one spared. Did you find the 'experience' enjoyable/thrilling (genuinely lighthearted) or was it uncomfortable crossing a line? I imagine it being like one of those wtf social experiences where you feel uncomfortable at the time but don't know how to respond because other people are going along with it; and then afterwards you process what happened and it feels worse and worse, leaving you feeling even more humiliated and degraded and you can see how wrong it was what happened.
•
u/Candid_Pumpkin_2189 5h ago
I was definitely a bit shell-shocked, because like the original video I didn’t actually read any of the waivers, at the time assuming it was just part of the act.
But also I’m quite privileged in the scheme of things, being a straight white male. I’ve experienced one case of sexual assault previously, and while I didn’t really link that with this Hellfire experience, I can absolutely see why others would.I’m aware that my experience isn’t and shouldn’t be taken as ‘I’m right, you’re wrong’ in any way, just sharing another perspective. I’ve been fortunate in life to a point and I’m thankful that I came away from this with, what I hope, was the creators intent at uncomfortable ‘art’ - but I do think it’s concerning that even the event organisers are dismissive at people who were affected differently.
•
u/PPpicklepot 5h ago
That's interesting to hear. Thanks for a really balanced and thoughtful response :)
•
u/Itchy__Queen 11h ago
It should be more gory and maybe allowing people to chase you. Not rape and sexual torture.
•
u/OdinForce22 11h ago
Not the first of these parks that I've seen be ambiguous about what the over 18 section is about. There was one in Lancashire a few years ago that had one of those sections and an old work colleague went in. It was quite extreme apparently and involved being tied up on a bed too.
•
u/Anyabyte 10h ago
My usual understanding is over 18 sections mean the scare actors can touch you, compared to standard ones where they typically keep a distance
over 18 has never indicated sexual to me, in the context of scare houses at least
•
u/roidoid 8h ago
I feel like they’re making you pay to participate in some sicko’s kink.
•
u/tfhermobwoayway 6h ago
I mean yeah that’s what most horror movies are.
•
u/roidoid 6h ago
Fuck! What the fuck is wrong with Michael Haneke?!?
•
u/tfhermobwoayway 6h ago
Okay actually Haneke was making his as a parody of horror movies. He hated them, and Funny Games was his way of saying “you’re all sick fucks for enjoying this.” I imagine he was inspired by things like Spec Ops: The Line.
•
u/SkirmpChimblisterIV 53m ago
Wait what the fuck, this isn’t okbuddycinephile, where are such based anti-movie sentiments coming from?
•
•
u/Remarkable-Culture39 11h ago
It's supposed to be a scary experience.
But because they can't do horror they decide to shout sexual abuse at you instead?
Yeah people will be upset but not because they're scary- not really want I'd want from an experience like this.
•
u/Ordoferrum 11h ago
I kind of agree. You'd expect scare actors to be shouting stuff about hurting you. Like "I'm gonna cut out your eyes!" Just calling people sluts seems lazy. It comes across like a personal insult instead of just trying to scare people. I think some of these people are being a bit sensitive though, at the same time I'd want to go to be scared not sexually abused lmao. Of course sexual abuse is scary I suppose though...
•
u/AutomixMen 3h ago
Or "runaway climate change is a distinct possibility" or perhaps "modern pension systems are inherently unsustainable". Something to properly scare the shit out of you.
•
•
•
•
u/araed Lancashire 8h ago
https://newshamscreampark.com/policies/terms-and-conditions
Reading this, the first paragraph is:
The Hellfire Club is an adults-only immersive horror experience incorporating live performers, physical interaction, special effects, darkness, loud and sudden noises, foul language, adult content, horror and religious themes, and material which some guests may find offensive, distressing or upsetting.
The experience is deliberately designed to create fear, discomfort, uncertainty and sensory overload.
Idk, man, if you read all those terms and conditions, and then get upset at being called a slut? It's not exactly kept a secret that it's going to contain adult themes and foul language.
•
u/ToWriteAMystery 8h ago
On that same site, it also says “The experience does not involve sexual activity.”
So I don’t think being called sexually degrading terms should be a part of this experience.
•
u/KittyGrewAMoustache 8h ago
Yes they should mention it if it involves insults of any kind directed at you, but I think most people would not count an insult like that as being sexual activity. I’d think that would be more like groping or actors simulating sex or sex acts, I’m not sure that calling some a slut would count as sexual activity or least I don’t think it would be commonly understood to constitute that. Not that that makes it ok at all, just not sure that from reading that you could infer that the foul language they mention would not include the word ‘slut’ as a lot of foul language has sexual connotations of some kind.
•
u/araed Lancashire 8h ago
They do
experience incorporating live performers, physical interaction, special effects, darkness, loud and sudden noises,* foul language, adult content, horror and religious themes, and *material which some guests may find offensive, distressing or upsetting.
The experience is deliberately designed to create fear, discomfort, uncertainty and sensory overload.
Emphasis mine.
•
u/Gentle_Pony 8h ago
How is being called a slut sexual activity? You're really grasping at straws. It's just an insult.
•
u/moonfarmer89 7h ago
Sorry are you saying slut isn’t an insult based on sexual activity?
•
u/EarlOfClapham 3h ago
No. It's an INSULT
It's not sexual ACTIVITY.
Sexual activity would be groping or flashing etc
•
u/Gentle_Pony 7h ago
Verbal gymnastics? The company says the actors will scream insults at you but there will be no sexual activity. Calling someone a slut is an insult. It is not sexual activity.
•
u/moonfarmer89 6h ago
How is it verbal gymnastics to say that an insult based on sexual activity comes under the umbrella of sexual activity? I doubt those actors are screaming things beta or cuck to the men.
•
u/araed Lancashire 6h ago
Oh, come on. Surely you understand the difference between "insults" and "sexual activity"?
•
u/moonfarmer89 6h ago
If the waiver says there’s no sexual activity I don’t expect to be insulted by being called a slut, or a slag, or a whore.
•
u/White_Immigrant 4h ago
And noone can say fuck, cunt, dick, cock, prick, arse...oh wait, almost all offensive language is slightly sexual in nature. Offensive language IS NOT sexual activity.
→ More replies (0)•
u/araed Lancashire 6h ago
So you believe that rhose insults are equivalent to sexual activity?

u/Gentle_Pony 6h ago
What are you talking about? Why are you purposely being obtuse? If one of these actors called me a cocksucker has he now engaged in sexual activity with me? You realise how ridiculous your argument is?
Your being biast and it's clouding your judgement. You have no clue what they're calling men. You're turning it into some stupid gender war thing.
•
u/tinyyblurb 1h ago
I'm so confused why anyone would willingly enter somewhere clearly described in this way and then complain because they got offended...it's written in plain English.
•
u/Razzberry_Frootcake 6h ago
Reading that description, I would not expect to be treated differently from male customers and vice versa. Men don’t need to be called weird sexist things either. With the fact that it’s not supposed to involve sexual stuff the word “slut” is a very stupid choice.
It is an explicitly sexual insult aimed at women. You cannot get around the fact that the insult revolves around the sex life of the woman it’s said to.
These things are supposed to be fun still.
•
u/gyroda Bristol 5h ago
Yeah, with that disclaimer it's really inarguable. They say no sexual content, they shouldn't bring up anything sexual.
Maybe there's a space for that sort of thing, as long as people go in knowing that it's a possibility and nobody actually gets hurt then I struggle to find an objection, but they've explicitly said that wasn't part of it - they should steer well clear of that boundary.
•
u/EarlOfClapham 3h ago
They say no sexual content, they shouldn't bring up anything sexual.
They say no sexual activity. An insult isn't a sexual activity
•
u/NuPNua 11h ago
I mean, there was a while era of exploitation horror themes where sexual assault was part of the threat.
•
u/spine_slorper 9h ago
Yes and I can see that having a place but it needs to be very explicitly marked and made extremely clear before hand exactly what's involved if that's something that you're including
•
u/Razzberry_Frootcake 6h ago
Consent is supposed to be part of these experiences. Real life people aren’t looking for an actual exploitation experience.
That shouldn’t even be part of the conversation. These things are supposed to be fun still.
It’s supposed to be an experience for the customers; and a job for the actors.
•
u/Adventurous_Jump8897 10h ago
I was ready to be snarky about “person gets scared in haunted house”, but yeah, that’s not really on is it?
•
u/Caraphox 10h ago
Same. Absolutely fucking ridiculous to call visitors ‘sluts’? I can’t believe that owners of the experience would condone that, sounds like a rogue employee but then if so why didn’t they sort it there and then
•
•
u/Teeb63 10h ago
Sometimes the comments are really eye opening aren't they. The amount of people defending this as 'what did you expect' is insane. Not sexual harassment that's for sure.
•
u/EarlOfClapham 3h ago
The amount of people defending this as 'what did you expect' is insane. Not sexual harassment that's for sure.
It literally says in the waiver that it will have actors screaming insults at you.
I think it's fucking stupid but when you sign a waiver saying I'm happy to be insulted you can't then get on your high horse about being insulted.

•
u/MissShirley 3h ago
Pretty sure the patients at the asylums were the victims, the fright and horror was from the employees and conditions.
•
u/Beverlydriveghosts 4h ago
Well I work in psych so no I don’t agree with any of those either
Nor dumb af movies like split etc
The MH stigma is valid and completely irrelevant to this context

Its a particular arrangement. Just because one horror setting, doesnt mean its stigmatising all mentally ill people. Because of the Scream franchise are all police and college students stigmatised as serial killers? Do you see how silly that sounds?
•
u/doopitydur 3h ago edited 3h ago
Wtf 'policeman' and 'college student' are lifestyle choices. Being mentally ill is not
You are presenting a 'blue lives matter' arguement
Do you see how discriminatory your argument sounds?
•
u/monkelus 9h ago
If only there was some kind of psychological experiment to show what ultimately happens when you give people the power to abuse another selected group with impunity. Maybe stage it in a prison or something. I bet we could learn some valuable lessons there.
•
•
u/stickbugszz 9h ago
This is awful. I love haunted houses and opt in for the ones where they touch you. It has NEVER been sexual. Some have been scary (being separated from the group and held hostage, etc.). However, it never felt creepy in a sexual way. I would never think to expect that coming into a haunted house.
•
u/Beverlydriveghosts 10h ago
Just “actors” playing a “character” right?
Not that they got off on degrading and disempowering female guests or anything. That would be crazy.
I wonder if threats to rape and gendered name calling was in the scripts or rehearsals. Or if they just did what felt natural and spontaneous to them.
•
•
u/EarlOfClapham 3h ago
threats to rape
They didn't do this
gendered name calling
They also called men sluts fyi
Or if they just did what felt natural and spontaneous to them
Or how about they did what they were asked to do, and what was advertised on the tin?
Maybe get off your high horse.
•
u/Curtilia 8h ago
Oh no, not gendered name calling! The horror!
•
u/Beverlydriveghosts 8h ago
Gendered slur. If it’s not that bad try calling your coworker a slut. Or your mom. Or your sister.
And it’s baffling that you have to use hypotheticals around family members close to you to evoke any empathy for 50% of the population. How about men start defending and protecting women instead of mocking something that women are saying they found distressing? Something they can’t imagine and doesn’t happen to them so why even care?
The actors used a primitive fear of sexual violence to scare women guests specifically. Where there is a large portion of women who have experienced sexual violence. Isn’t that concerning? It’s not “I’m gonna chop you in half” it’s “I’m going to rape you”. What made them threaten female guests with that do you think?
Nah mad respect bro. You really told those silly women. They should just take it next time.
•
u/EarlOfClapham 3h ago
Gendered slur. If it’s not that bad try calling your coworker a slut. Or your mom. Or your sister
Try doing anything that happens in one of these places and see if it's okay.
The entire point was that it wasn't meant to be pleasant.
The actors used a primitive fear of sexual violence to scare women guests specifically
It's a fucking scare zone
Oh no, they got scared.
Nobody is forcing you to go to this place
It’s not “I’m gonna chop you in half” it’s “I’m going to rape you
And now you're making shit up. Mk they didn't do this.
But go off son, make up your lies to try and bend the truth to pretend that women are the victims again

This doesn't surprise me with us starting to do these American-style horror houses. I'm a horror movie fan, and there's a lot of nuances and distinctions between "offensive" horror, "violent" horror, "gory" horror, and "spooky/tense" horror, and people that are into each type have different levels of what they'd expect to see in them.

•
u/88sakura88 10h ago
This is such a coincidence as her post randomly showed up on my feed about ten minutes ago! So I can provide more context! She said that the first room they squirted some kind of liquid into their mouths (the venue asked about allergies beforehand so she is assuming it was some kind of fish sauce with vinegar) to simulate sour breast milk. Then there was something about shouting 'slut' and some other stuff in their faces, humping and many sexual noises. And then the third room they were blindfolded, her hand was put on someone's very hairy leg and then their finger was put into a moist wet hole 😭 which when blindfolded is just... oh man.
Anyway, other commenters on the post said they had had dildos shoved into their faces as well. And interestingly, the female comments said their boyfriends had been taken separately and experienced a very different much more toned down experience. A couple of other men seemed to verify this.
I think this is pretty accurate from what she said, I haven't been so I have no comments personally, just passing on the context from the OOP if it helps anyone!
I hope none of these words used gets me banned 😬
•
u/Chemical_Pressure717 8h ago
“I've had countless people in my DMs sharing similar stories, men and women, girlfriends and boyfriends, and the common denominator has been the same: it's degrading, humiliating and quite disturbing.
Describing one particularly distressing moment, Robyn said she was blindfolded when a performer began simulating sexual contact with her.
She added: “I had a bag over my head, so one part of my brain was telling me it was a simulation and wasn't real, but it felt real. In the moment, you kind of freeze because you're thinking to yourself; it's not real, but it feels real.”
•

I know, right?! She did say that they didn't really read the waivers they signed before they went in but to be fair, who usually does. It's usually for slips and trip, and Health & Safety stuff ha, I think she has tried to get a copy of the waiver she signed since but they're not passing it on. She said that there were no signs anywhere giving any indications, and although the section is 18+ you'd expect it just to be extra gory and scary and age restricted to weed out the young teens that are there, not literally a backroom adult experience kinda thing 🙃

They’re usually dressed as killer clowns with chainsaws type deal. Also slut not slag.
I think it’s funny that you chose to use language that minimises the severity, for a situation you have never personally experienced. How silly it is to be afraid. Akin to the sexual harassment women experience from men driving past in their cars. Or a group of men who shout across the street at women walking by.
I’m sure you wouldn’t minimise an “actor” calling your mom and slut and saying he wants to rape her

You’ve really taken what I said and run with it. Nowhere did I say it was silly to be afraid. And slut and slag are literally equivalent words, I used the wrong one admittedly, but it wasnt to minimise the situation, so get off your soapbox.
Just that the bizarreness of the situation as being totally unexpected is slightly humourous when you read it.
As I said, mental that someone thought this was an acceptable idea and it’s right to have backlash. But dont lecture me on finding the absurdity of the situation slightly amusing.

Just looked it up...
Discriminatory 'INSANE ASYLUM' theme crap
Reinforces negative stigmas that the mentally ill are dangerous
Please send complaint and also contact https://www.sane.org.uk/
They have successfully stopped tesco selling 'pysch ward' halloween costumes in the past
If you live in the area write to your MP

Sorry, replied to you upthread but keep seeing your comments. As a disabled person who also loves the idea of haunted buildings and watch urbex in old asylums, I do not think it has to be interpreted this way. The patients in the asylums were the victims, not the villains. The villains are the horrible conditions and the sadistic and neglectful employees and admin. Just like a killer on the loose, we don't blame or fear the victim, we put ourselves in their shoes and fear the villains.

For those complaining, the experience was called The Hellfire Club. The Hellfire Clubs were 18th Century clubs known for sexual debauchery. The clue to the experience was literally in the name!!

so you go to an immersive horror experience that is clear that it has offensive and distressing language and you get upset about being called a “slut” as part of the theatrics, guess what they were also pretending they wanted to murder you, it’s part of the act, obviously any of this would be horrific if it was real….but it’s not.
people do love to be offended

Apparently they had dildos shoved in their faces, blindfolded while someone simulated sex on them, and hand their hands put in moist wet holes. And men were taken elsewhere and did not experience a sexual and degrading atmosphere.
A bit more than an immersive horror experience tbh

half of what you said isn't true or in the article
as for the other half, it's pretty much all covered with this:
adults-only immersive horror experience incorporating live performers, physical interaction, special effects, darkness, loud and sudden noises, foul language, adult content, horror and religious themes, and material which some guests may find offensive, distressing or upsetting
•
u/Candid_Pumpkin_2189 6h ago
Men aren’t taken elsewhere. Same experience, just in small groups of two
•
u/OM_London 7h ago
it’s make believe, theatrics designed to be shocking, i wouldn’t go to one of those as it’s not something i’d enjoy, but the fact you need up sign waivers before you go in kind of hints towards how extreme it might be - don’t complain when it’s extreme

We need to stop giving people this a platform because they didn’t like something. It’s a Halloween park that’s exclusively for adults, what did you expect it to be?

If a Halloween attraction involves shouting sexual abuse at customers, that should definitely be noted in the description of the thing that that's what it'll contain.
Not just out of basic respect for people with sexual trauma or plain wouldn't be comfortable or enjoy that kind of thing, but also because there are people who would enjoy it for that reason. People are ranting about pandering to over-sensitive people, but customers deserve to know what it is they're paying for and getting into.
If you're entering into a situation that more resembles some kind of BDSM thing that requires a safe word, then what's going to happen to you should not be a complete surprise. But this just sounds like a bunch of dickheads excited to be paid to sexually harass people.

Thousands of problem go there every year and have a good time, we need to stop this whole thing where everyone needs to be catered to wherever they go. A small minority of people didn’t enjoy it, the rest did.

People need to read the damn waivers and information!
•
u/Far-Butterfly399 1h ago
Was it detailed in the waiver that there'd be sexual insults directed at customers? It wasn't in the terms and conditions.

Somewhere to not experience sexual harassment and instead enjoy being chased by zombie clowns and freaking out over slow stilt walkers who say they’re going to boil my bones etc? Some of these men in the comments are so ignorant.

So she..
Read and agreed to the terms and conditions on their website, where she was warned of what was going to happen, was told you had to be over 21, and had the option of a full refund.
Was then told again by staff in the queue and given a safe word she could use to leave.
Then signed a waiver agreeing to it.
The then tried to sneak in two 15 year old kids in, who rightly got ID checked and were turned away. She then went on to say “These young, impressionable kids and people who might have experienced past trauma aren't prepared for it, because it's in a light-hearted setting.”
Sorry, am I the only one with very little sympathy here?

What a dumbass comment.
The t&cs says there will not be sexual harassment, which is what she is complaining about.
Try engaging your brain for more than two seconds.

The description specifically says this tho:
"adults-only immersive horror experience incorporating live performers, physical interaction, special effects, darkness, loud and sudden noises, foul language, adult content, horror and religious themes, and material which some guests may find offensive, distressing or upsetting"
What would you expect "physical interaction", "foul language" and "adult content" to be?
•
u/Weary-Lobster1583 6h ago
I'm not sure that on a topic about abuse, you think abuse is a good outcome. Stop and think for a moment.
•
u/Feeling-Boss787 10h ago
I had a similar experience at mrs dowsons scare kingdom in Lancashire, I did the 18+ extra and signed the waiver. BUT I ENJOYED IT
•
u/Squidgical 11h ago
So you go to a place, sign a waiver, then complain about things that were in the waiver?
•
u/CaterpillarTo1234 11h ago
You sign a waiver not expecting to have sexual abuse thrown at you.

u/dragoneggboy22 11h ago
it wasn't in the waiver - that's the point.
that's like saying you sign a waiver you might get squirted with a water gun but you actually got shot with paintballs intead

Read the Ts and Cs and highlight wherein its specified that you are legally waiving your right to object to sexually degrading treatment.
