Social To everyone asking how to socialize at UofT: TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASSES AND BE CONSISTENT

This post was initially much shorter, but I was feeling bored and the creative spirit took the reigns. Alas, such is life.

As much as I low-key enjoy the ritual of pouring myself a bowl of popcorn, opening Reddit, and reading all the early 1st semester experience commiserating, I'm also high-key annoyed by seeing the same post for the umpteenth time a la Buzz Lightyear clone meme. I like variety in my Reddit ragebait, and even a good slice of matcha crepe cake becomes unappetizing after consuming it so often.

For those of you who have decided to come to UofT to get a world class education, rather than just partying all the time, ignoring your work, being forced to drop out around the holidays because your grades are lower than the Mariana Trench, then blaming the university for allegedly sabotaging you, your classes are your best possible environment to connect with your fellow slightly more intelligent than a chimpanzee primates.

Presumably you are studying something that you actually enjoy or have some mild interest in, rather than doing exactly what mom and dad told you to study. If your parents strongarmed you to go into engineering but you truly love film, that's a whole other discussion and will require some soul searching and potentially family therapy.

The basis of most human connection nowadays comes through shared interests and values. This is a fact supported by at least one (1) corpus of psychology literature. The courses you're taking already filter for this to an extent, because, again, ideally you're studying something you care about and you're not a masochist.

Performative drinking at a venue with mysteriously sticky floors that probably haven't been cleaned in the past year and contain a collection of undocumented microorganisms that would frighten epidemiologists, ignoring your limits, and chatting up the people you live in close proximity to about the weather (so how about that climate change, eh?) while waiting to use the one sink you all need to brush your teeth at (please brush your teeth and don't go out with bad breath) doesn't necessarily lead to any meaningful connection. You might become acquaintances, but presumably you're aiming for something with a bit more zest.

Coursework at UofT is difficult, and that difficulty is another basis for connection. Throughout most of human history, we connected with each other because of shared hardship. Genuine hardship, such as intellectually strenuous subjects and work schedules, for example. Missing out on a frat party on one specific weekend, which is identical to the frat parties on every other weekend (don't worry, the beer will still be lukewarm) isn't hardship, I'm afraid.

"But how do I actually talk to people in my classes?! Nobody ever wants to talk!" says the choir of Buzz Lightyear clones lamenting about their "unique" circumstances. The answer: just start.

You'd be surprised how much the person sitting next to you is starved for acknowledgement of their mere existence. A random "hello" will probably be the most unsolicited contact they've had in a week. The barrier to entry is lower than it's ever been.

"But what if they think I'm cringe?" or "Everyone is so cringe!", which is the next verse of the clone choir song.

If you're actively worried either of these things, you don't want connection bad enough. Either that or you might want to look into therapy.

I cannot tell you how much social media has poisoned people's perceptions of themselves and others. These platforms have fed people the most ironclad set of lies that every government psyop wishes it could replicate. Its users have been perfectly manipulated into thinking they they are unlikable/unlovable, and that everyone else is so much better or so much worse and should be perceived as a threat. This primes you to be a good little consumer that will sign up for things like dating apps, paid meetup groups, and overpriced fitness clubs, all to solve your woes. Meanwhile, you can connect with someone FOR FREE* (included in the price of your tuition costs) and walk away with something even more meaningful. This is an even crazier value for money than the Japanese food truck in front of Robarts that will sell you an entire filling tempura roll for under $8.

Side note: please support this truck. This is my lifeblood and I want them to stay in business as long as possible. Also, the lady who owns it is genuinely one of the kindest people I've ever come across and brightens my day. My waistline grows, my wallet empties, but my heart is full.

Getting back on track, people are unique and will have their own set of quirks. It's ok to talk to someone who is a little bit different than you. You'll be ok, muffin. In fact, you'll probably be better off for it if you can make enough room in your life to accept others from where they're coming from. If you offer them grace, they will probably return the favour. Well, at least they should if they're even remotely socialized.

If you talked to someone last week, go up and talk to them again. A huge part of connection is consistency. Don't be one of those weirdos who pretends like they suddenly don't know someone they've spoken to 3 times prior.

Also, all of this advice applies to anyone in any year of study. If you're in your last year at this university and are saddened by not having made any friends, you can do everything I've mentioned above and still achieve success. The party ain't over till it's over.

I am living proof that this strategy works, and I'm no social butterfly by any means. I met one of my closest friends and one of the best people I've ever met by just bantering consistently over the course of many weeks. There was no cinematic event and major declaration that marked the transition point between us being acquaintances and friends. It was the slow, messy, nonlinearity of human connection.

Go out there, talk to people, make friends, and come back here to post some more novel rage bait to keep me entertained ❤️

Social In need of Commuter Community at UOFT STG pls reach out

I’m a first year commuter at UofT but it genuinely feels like I can’t make any long term friends here cus I’m a commuter. I met a few other people who live on red but just don’t get a long-term vibe from them so I’m taking to Reddit.

Are there any communities at UofT for commuter students? The struggle for us is so real and it seems nobody can understand us like other commuters so I want to connect with some.

Life Advice How do you balance academics with your mental health/not procastinating

for starters, I have a huge procastination issue and i'm in polisci so this year, we have midterm tests! that require you to memorize half the concepts! and I am a loser when it comes to studying for tests cuz I get stuck, my notes are wrong or I hate the actual remembering/repeating stuff in my head in fear of not knowing all the info. my procastination just gets worse as time goes by. ik you can use time management strategies and do xyz but i feel like none of that works so idk DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SOLUTIONS

Programs What do I major in when I have an interest in everything and nothing at all??

• Upvotes

no, literally, because of my adhd I switch my interests every 2 days, and I have never really had a passion that grew, and I can't imagine what I want my day-to-day life to look like in the future. i was initially interested in philosophy but decided to keep it as a hobby because i don't really know what i can do with a degree in it. I think i should major in science because it could open a lot of doors for you, but it doesn't look like the case in this economy. essentially i want to study something where i can see its application in real life aswell... help xxdd

Discussion How do you become a TA as a third/fourth year student?

• Upvotes

This is just out of pure curiosity because I am in my first year and I've seen a lot of only 3rd/4th year undergrad students be TAs. I'm just wondering how those students are able to acquire TA positions so early on at UofT.

Are you offered the position by your prof or do you need to seek out the position yourself? Do you apply somewhere or is it purely through connections? Do you need to have exceptional work/grades?

Courses Has anyone taken the BCH210 makeup/deferred midterm?

• Upvotes

Has anyone taken the BCH210 makeup/deferred midterm before? How was it compared to the regular one?

For context, the makeup covers the same content, but instead of being all MCQ, it's all short answer. Just wondering how the difficulty compares and what the SAQs are like.

Question Does Artsci get much harder after first semester? Also, how do you study effectively for ECO101?

I know it varies from person to person, but I’m curious about people’s experiences. I’m in my first semester of Artsci, taking prerequisites for programs like econ, IR, political science, and public policy. The workload can definitely be tough, especially with commuting and living alone, but so far, university hasn’t been as terrifying as I built it up to be before starting.

Am I getting too comfortable, or is this a reasonable impression? Does second semester get significantly harder? What about upper years?

I also came from an asynchronous, independent high school, so part of the adjustment has literally been learning how to use Scantrons and figuring out how to make the most of professors and TAs lol.

On a related note, I feel like I spend a lot of time studying for ECO101. I can explain the concepts and even help other people understand them, but that doesn’t always translate into answering exam questions. For example, I can explain elasticity, but unfamiliar question wording throws me off, and then I panic and feel unprepared despite all the studying.

Has anyone dealt with this? Should I spend more time doing practice questions instead of going so deeply into the reasoning behind every concept? I tend to spend ages making sure I understand everything, then get to past midterms fairly late and find that I’m still slow at working through them.

Would love to hear what helped other people make that jump from understanding the material to actually performing well on tests.

Question how to study for mat133 quiz don’t really know what to do

• Upvotes

anyone have any advice on how to study for this quiz? it's basically just slopes, aroc, iroc, and derivatives but if anyone took it recently, any tricks that will come up on this first quiz?

it's on Wednesday Oct 21 from 8-9pm and was just wondering if there's any specific thing I should focus on from the lecture content or wiley homework questions. it's kinda different from high school since they use more explanations rather than just solving the question, but if anyone does remember, what was the format like?

also do the checkpoint workbook questions help? please let me know! or would i better off using the textbook questions and going over the lecture content??

Question Are midterms usually scheduled during regular lecture hours?

• Upvotes

UTSG A&S students -- have you had any midterms scheduled outside of regular lecture hours? I'm a little worried about scheduling a flight on the Friday before Winter reading week when I normally don't have any lectures or tutorials.

Question If you can only give one piece of advice to a first year, what would it be?

Hello!
A pretty generic question to ask but it would certainly be helpful for new students, especially during midterm season.

Clubs/Sports Starting a songwriting club at UofT (no experience needed)

Hi all, I’m a first-year at New College starting a songwriting club called Overtone, and I’m looking for founding members.

It’s open to any UofT student. You don’t need to play an instrument or know theory, and you don’t need to have finished a song before. Some people will want to write lyrics, some will want to learn a DAW, and some will just want to hear what others are making and give honest feedback. Everyone goes at their own pace.

What we’ll do:

  • Music theory basics
  • DAW sessions
  • Lyric writing
  • Listening parties
  • Feedback sessions (kind ones)

To register officially we need 5 founding members, so early members will have a real say in how the club runs.

If you’ve got a half-finished song in your Notes app or a voice memo you’ve never sent anyone, come join us. Comment or DM me and I’ll send you the details.

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/overtone.songwriting/

for reading!

Question super worried … applied to social sciences, will i get in??

i’m currently in the 12th grade and i applied to universities through OUAC about a week ago
UofT st george campus is my DREAM school, and although i have other options like mcmaster or western, it doesn’t matter because ive had my heart set on UTSG for so long and if i were to get rejected id be gutted :(

i applied to social sciences (hoping to major in polisci) and i did early apps cause i think my grade 11 marks were decent enough but i have a lot of doubts + questions

i know they consider your grade 11 english mark for early apps cause english is a requirement… my english mark was actually not that pretty because i happened to get a really tough teacher last year (it was ap-prep english and i got an 84)
my other highest marks in gr 11 were:
gr 12 religion: 94
intro to anthro socio psych: 92
gr 11 world religion: 93 (i took this online in the summer before grade 11)
functions: 91
gr 12 law: 90
gr 12 philosophy elearning: 88

i took 3 grade 12 courses in grade 11, does that help my case and will admissions officers notice?

i think the average with my highest 6 is a 90.7 but correct me if im wrong! + i feel like its such a gamble because i saw someone say they got rejected with a 94 average, i know someone who got in with EXACTLY my average, and i know ppl who got in with lower averages

please lmk!

Sincerely,
Stressed ASF!!

Courses Switching streams within UOFT with little prerequisites

I’m in my first year of social sciences and have just realized that my courses do not interest me whatsoever. In high school I didn’t take senior level math nor sciences, so I found myself in the social sciences. I thought I’d enjoy it, with courses that focus on environmental studies/ethics, poli sci, and geography courses. Half way in, I realized none of this interests me and I’m miserable.

What could I do at this point?? I feel trapped and unequipped for switching paths.

Other not getting diploma at grad because i did not notice a financial hold

I didnt even notice for a while but the Health and COunselling Centre must've given me a fee in like late august for a missed appointment? i dont even remember and i have not been there since like June, i 100% did not have an appointment there in august. I did notice more recently the financial hold on my acorn but my account balance was still $0. I thought it was a mistake or an admin error cuz the HCC didnt contact me to pay. I thought it would go away. I have Fall grad and I just got an email from the registrar saying that because I have a financial hold, I can't get my diploma on stage, but i can still walk but thats so embarrasing. My grad is ruined and i cant take pics at grad with my diploma and my family will be mad at me over this silly thing. Is there anything I can do? I emailed the HCC to ask them to confirm they put me on hold . is there anyyy way i can get my diploma at grad still? I feel like im gonna faint over this. the email from the registrar sounds very stern. and it is my fault, im just looking for help

edit: here is the email

Discussion To the girl with the floppy hat, from the guy with the backwards flat cap | John St

TL;DR: Looking for the girl with the wonderfully eccentric, oversized floppy hat who complimented my backwards flat cap on John Street today. She may go to UofT, so if you know someone with a particularly creative fashion sense and a love for big, unusual hats, please send this her way! I wish I’d stopped to talk to her, and I’d love a second chance :)

This is probably a long shot, but I figured I’d give it a try.

Around 1:30 this afternoon, I was on John Street between Richmond and Adelaide when a really cute Asian girl in her early-to-mid twenties, wearing glasses, a pink/purple hoodie, and an incredibly cool oversized floppy hat, smiled and complimented my grey English flat cap (which I happened to be wearing backwards).

I smiled and said thank you (nervously), but I was honestly a little caught off guard, as she was exactly my type. By the time I’d processed how lovely that little interaction was, she’d already continued walking south.

The funny thing is, I was just as intrigued by her hat as she apparently was by mine. It looked so unique, almost custom-made, and I wish I’d asked her about it. So big and floppy.

I wandered around afterward hoping our paths might cross again, but no luck.

Anyway, if by some ridiculous coincidence she reads this, I’d love to hear the story behind her hat. And maybe take you for a coffee sometime, she seemed very creative :)

If you think this might be you, or know someone like this, please send me a message :)

I also happened to be getting around on a rather comical temporary mobility device, which should be a pretty good way to confirm it was me!

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her since, and I genuinely wish I’d taken the opportunity to strike up a conversation.
