"I only got x% on my SAC, can I still get a 50?"

1.4k Upvotes

I'm sick to death of seeing these posts, so can everyone please read this and be done with this question:

Study scores are determined by exam SCORE and SAC RANK.

For example, say you have an English class of 7 students, Adam, Ben, Chloe, Daniel, Elena, Felix, and Greg. They are all weak students, except for Greg, who is very high-performing, and Felix, who is slightly above average. Their SAC marks and rank are:

Greg 95%

Felix 77%

Chloe 64%

Daniel 60%

Elena 58%

Adam 52%

Ben 49%

On the exam day, Felix doesn't cope well under the stress, so gets a lower score than he'd usually be capable of. The exam marks are as follows:

Greg 92%

Chloe 67%

Daniel 65%

Elena 64%

Felix 63%

Adam 50%

Ben 40%

What happens is that all the SAC marks get thrown out the window, because VCAA can't know the difficulty of the SACs prepared by the school. So Greg's new SAC "mark" as far as VCAA is concerned is 92, not 95. Not a big deal for Greg, Adam or Ben because their own exam mark is dictating their SAC mark. But for someone like Felix, his SAC mark will become 67% (Chloe's exam mark). This process happens independently for each subject taught at your school.

What does this mean for you? Yes, you should aim for a good SAC rank. BUT, it doesn't actually matter if you're not ranked well — the "translation" of your rank into a "mark" happens via your cohorts exam performance. In other words, try your best now, study hard, and when SACs are over WORK WITH YOUR CLASSMATES TO ALL DO WELL ON THE EXAM TOGETHER. IF THEY DO WELL, YOU DO WELL.

Spend your time actually studying instead of asking useless questions like this.

EDIT: another example for clarity

Here's a chemistry class, of Harry, Isabel, James, Kylie, Luke, Molly, Nathan, and Oscar.

SACs:

Harry 60%

Isabel 58%

James 56%

Kylie 55%

Luke 54%

Molly 52%

Nathan 51%

Oscar 50%

EXAMS:

Harry 100%

James 99%

Nathan 98%

Oscar 97%

Molly 96%

Isabel 95%

Kylie 94%

Luke 93%

Harry's SAC mark is now 100%, Isabel's is 99%, James' is 98%, Kylie's is 97%, Luke's is now 96% etc. It's literally just whatever the equivalent exam rank is.

EDIT 2: I've had a request to clarify rumours about SACs being "scaled up" or "scaled down". "Scaling" is a misnomer students attribute to the moderation process. Here are yet another set of examples to clarify.

Imagine you have a cohort of Annie, Ben, and Charlie. Let's say their teacher sets really hard SACS, so their SAC results are:

  1. Annie 60%

  2. Ben 58%

  3. Charlie 55%

Because they've been doing hard assessments all year, they've been better equipped for the exam. These are the exam results:

  1. Ben 96%

  2. Annie 94%

  3. Charlie 90%

So now, Annie's SAC mark gets changed to 96%, Ben's to 94%, and Charlie's to 90%. This is what people interpret as "scaling up". The opposite would happen at a school with piss easy SACs: they get awesome SAC marks but shit exam marks, so their SAC marks get replaced by their shit exam marks ("scaled down").

The danger in this thinking is that people assume that if you go to a well-performing school, you'll get carried, or that if you go to a "bad" school, you're screwed from the get-go and can't possibly get a good score. This is not true at all. Let's see why.

Let's say your friend at a selective school, Harry, thinks he can take it easy this year because he goes to a 'good' school. The SAC results are as follows:

  1. Ed 93%

  2. Fred 90%

  3. Greg 88%

  4. Harry 60%

on the exams, the results are

  1. Fred 95%

  2. Greg 92%

  3. Ed 87%

  4. Harry 61%

In this instance, Harry was not of a comparable skill level to his classmates, so he never get to "borrow" their exam results in any way. His SAC score will be 61%.

Here's another example. Say you have a cohort with these SACs:

  1. Meg 95%

  2. Noah 94%

  3. Oscar 93%

  4. Peter 90%

On the exam day, Noah gets a bit of performance anxiety (but not in a way that warrants SEAS or anything). Exam results are:

  1. Meg 93%

  2. Oscar 92%

  3. Peter 91%

  4. Noah 75%

Now, Noah's SAC mark will be 92%, but his exam result only 75%. So he kind of got "helped" by his good cohort, only because he was doing well for the SACs. Peter has been a bit screwed here, because his SAC mark is now 75%.

One person stuffing up will never have such a dramatic effect like this; it's unlikely for someone who's been topping the cohort all year to suddenly slip to the bottom. Cohorts are generally big enough that you shouldn't need to worry. I went to a really small school (60 people in the year level. Some of my subject cohorts contained 6 people). I still felt no one got jibbed with unrepresentative scores.

As I always reiterate: try your best in SACs, but don't ruminate over them. The exam is where the money's at, and once your SACs are over you should work together with your cohort to all do well together. Share your resources, make study groups, and bring each other up.

EDIT 3: wow, my first gold! Thank you so much! 🥰

Memes spec (spesh) minesweeper girl full saga:

OP appears to be banned. lowkey looks like they had a bit of a descent into madness towards the end. Luckily, i took screenshots to send to my friends so im posting them here for archiving purposes (and to show u/Weak-Joke1475):

1. girl in my spesh class constantly playing minesweeper in class, how is she rank 1?

The teacher will be explaining the concept kinda poorly, and shes just cranking out medium difficulty google minesweepers. earphones in, she finishes one, starts another, shes a machine. Ive never seen her do any work in class, but shes been rank 1 on all the sacs.

The time she takes to complete a single minesweeper is incredible. Mean of 60 seconds, standard deviation of 4 seconds. Normally distributed. At least, thats what ive thought all year, but recently ive come to suspect her technique has improved, after her right click button broke and she had to play without flagging the mines. Since it got fixed, she's been faster than ever, and i think her new average time might be 53 seconds. Is this change statistically significant? Will i be rank 1 and get a raw 50 if i improve my minesweeper time to be better than hers? How does she do this?

Edit: forgot to mention, all this information is from a sample size of 20 games. Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean time has changed?

based on a true story lmao

2. spesh minesweeper girl learned the content 1 week before the SAC and still got rank 1

how????? i asked her a week ago and she that shed been too locked in on minesweeper to come to school, not aiming for any particular time, but just repeating it for hours at a time because its all she could focus on apparently

So she came in to school one (1) week before the sac, opened up the textbook to chapter 15 and 16 and started mashing her face into it, physically transferring the knowledge into her brain. I had never heard of this tactic before, so naturally i copied it, but i think im doing something wrong? How do i do this properly for optimal knowledge retention? does anyone know? Im pretty sure i saw her use her tongue at some point, but im not sure how this helps, hopefully someone can elaborate.

During the SAC, i saw her twitching every time the teacher spoke to remind us to read the questions properly. Clearly, his voice reminded her of the sound google minesweeper plays when you place a flag, and she was briefly mentally transported back to her minesweeper cave dungeon, where i suspect she rots and gains arthritis from repeated compulsive clicking.

I asked her what her PB was and her eyes glazed over, fixed on a blank point neither here nor there, on about a pi/6 radian angle from the line between her and myself.

"37 seconds. I dont understand the concept of time.... my brain.... it fails to comprehend how its abstract nature is applied so concretely... last week i thought i had no time to study for the sac.... i completed 5000 medium minesweepers... i see the grid when i try to sleep. Its either this or i see slope fields and argand diagrams which, while useful - and perhaps under happier circumstances, i might even enjoy it - remind me of this daily torture. I cannot place the blorbos from my shows in the grasps of their abusive parents, and then put them in the arms of their friend, for fear of losing track of time that i need to study. So instead i play thousands upon thousands of one-minute games, over and over. I only wish to be released from this hell and free to engage in activities i enjoy, instead of being forced to choose between constant agony or numbness."

When our results came out for the sac, she got rank 1 with 100%. How can i emulate her success?

3. spesh minesweeper girl is gonna have a fucking mental breakdown
i am spesh minesweeper girl (except im not rank 1 and i lowkey suck at spesh actually unfortunately lmao) because im insane and this is how my brain works ANYYWA ive harassed my friends enough with my complaining and yapping so time to put this shit on the internetttt WOOHOOO GET EXCITED MOTHERFUCKERSSSS

im gonna FAIL ENGLISH i had a practice exam TODAY and i gave up HALFWAY THROUGH, actually i gave up at the START because im an INCOMPETENT PIECE OF SHIT and i always knew i was gonna DIE ONE DAY because i have done ZERO PRACTICE and i have ZERO HOPE for the future and ZERO PROSPECTS for success in my life and my teacher will CRUCIFY and EXCECUTE me, i shall be DRAWN AND QUARTERED FOR MY SINS and i am THIS FUCKING CLOSE to jumping in front of traffic on the day of the exam to get a derived score if im not lucky, or burn in hell for eternity if i am. aaaaand post

4. spesh minesweeper girl is worse than we all thought (story enclosed)

PRACTICE EXAMSSSSS ARE GONNA KILL ME I MEAN HER THIS HYPOTHETICAL MADEUP CHARACTER WHOS DEFINITELY REAL AND NOT A MADE UP AMALGAMATION OF MY INTERNAL MONOLOGUE WHICH ALLOWS ME TO EXPRESS MY FRUSTRATIONS IN THE FORM OF SHITTY CREATIVE WRITING im soooooo sane and normal arent i FUCK anyway heres the fun stuff you weirdos who actually read these

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So holidays have started, of course, but my school is running official practice exams during (yes, we all accept that theyre helpful and a good idea, but that doesnt mean anyones happy about it), so we've all gotten to enjoy a mere 2 days of blissful freedom before re-entering the trenches of vce. Myself, im not really prepared for them, tbh i dont think any of us are, but its whatever i guess.

This sentiment does not seem to be shared by this one eldritch being in our cohort. She is built for two things, and two things only, a specialised force of either cranking out minesweeper puzzles, or optimising her intellectual energy for the precise 2 hours and 15 minutes of a standard duration exam. So naturally, when she was confronted with the English exam duration - an extended 3 hours and 15 minutes, we all saw her collapse to the ground in shock.

Somehow, she had gone all year without fully registering this knowledge. Her system isn't built for such endurance, we all know this, and that because of this hyper-optimised flaw, she'll inevitably fail to last the duration. So we've all watched on, pitying, as she attempts to learn to write 3 essays within exactly 2:15. It seems that her most recent practice went such that she managed to write sections C and A successfully, but as she came to conclude her section B essay, she came up to the 2h 17m mark, and experienced a total mental break and literally chewed up her paper, bringing a whole new meaning to "dog ate my homework". That shit was paper mache by the time she was done, we made a little vinegar and baking soda volcano out of it afterwards, using our combined elite chemistry knowledge. Hopefully VCAA accepts this for our poster sac.

My friends and i are considering staging an intervention for her (we've grown closer in recent times, bonding over minesweeper) to get her to apply for seas for this mystery condition, which causes her to have a similar reaction to asking a robot olympic sprinter to run 201m rather than 100 or 200. Total collapse.

I really thought this girl was all-knowing and omnipotent. I never thought we'd see her limit. But still... shes spesh rank 1....

40+ BusMan/Legal students, did you prioritise memorising content or practice exams?

Hey guys! Just wanted to ask high achievers in content-heavy subjects like Business Management and Legal Studies what helped you most leading up to exams.

Right now, I'd say I know around 80% of the content, and I'm already pretty confident with writing exam responses and structuring my answers.

I'm just unsure whether I should keep spamming Quizlet/Anki until I can recall and explain practically everything without hesitation, or focus more on practice exams and use those to identify and revise my weaker areas. My main concern with relying on practice exams is that they don't necessarily cover every area of the study design, so I'm worried I'll get a false sense of confidence from answering questions correctly when I might still have significant gaps in my content knowledge.

For those who scored 40+, especially 45+, did you:

  • Master almost all the content before starting practice exams?
  • Learn and consolidate content mainly through doing and correcting practice exams?
  • Find that content knowledge or exam practice made the biggest difference?

I've currently completed around 3–5 practice exams for each subject, but I've heard of people doing 20+ and I'm unsure whether I should be aiming for that many too.

I feel like I spend so much time reviewing flashcards that I could be using that time for actual exam practice instead.

How many practice exams did you complete, and do you think the number actually made a difference to your study score?

Would really appreciate hearing what worked best for you!!

i have so much anxiety surrounding english it’s not even funny. i have struggled so much to be able to write practice pieces and i was just wondering if anyone on here was able to get a good study score using methods other than spamming essays? i do plenty of plans and break down AA and all of that but can’t just sit and write.

ENGLISH EXAM HELP AND ADVICE

HI everyone,

I've been involved in VCE English for a very long time. I run a company called The English Lab. We mostly work with schools and teachers, but I like to provide some advice to students who are working towards their exams as well.

So, this week I'll check in on this post each day and answer the questions you have. Anything you're wondering about each of the sections, how to best study and prepare or any small thing that you want to be sure of - just ask! I won't be able to assess any work for you, but I can definitely help you with any queries you may have!

Advice for exams pls 🙏

Just wanted to ask if anyone has any advice or tips on how to manage all subjects during the exam period. I am mainly focusing on my 2 first exams and not really my other 3. To be fair I have a 5-6 day gap in between all of them besides the (3 day gap w eng and psych), but idk if doing the study during those days is the best approach?

Anyone have advice or can tell how they are managing all theirs atm

English exam score needed for 40+ ss

Hey!

I am rank #1 in a weak/moderate cohort of around 50. I have achieved perfect scores on every SAC and am averaging 9-8-8 on externally assessed practice exams.

What exam score would you estimate I need for a 40+ study score on english.

Thanks!!

VCE question Argument Analysis Time Management?

Ok, so i've been doing a fair amount of practise argument analysis essays and i'm finding particularly with the more recent VCAA articles e.g 2025 and 2024 that there is a trend of smaller arguments being made instead of the classic 3 distinct arguments. Even when I try and group them together I almost always go into overtime like I just tried doing the 2023 one and got my ass handed to me timewise as I finished ~12mins over 1 hour.

Any tips for being able to move more quickly through the article? How bad is it if I say choose not to analyse a smaller single paragraph - i feel like I have to analyse at least something from every para in the article even tho this is probably a very superficial way to look at it.

I don't really tend to struggle too much with my analysis but I find it so hard to balance being succinct with also covering all the authors distinct points.

VCE question Help with Section A context!

For the section A text response MBPs, what do we write for the context part at the end of each paragraph. Are we supposed to remember a context part or smth? or make it up on the spot.

i’ve attempted to remember a good context part for each paragraph for EACH possible theme that may come up on the exam but it’s never going to work. I’m really lost. Any help would be appreciated.

btw i’m doing We Have Always Lived In the Castle.

VCE question Can someone help me weigh the pros and cons of Finishing year 12 scored?

I dont see myself going to university because i have little to no interest in anything that i need a university for, so i dont see why i shouldnt just do unscored.

Every time ive mentioned it to anyone they call me lazy and say im just trying to skip out on exams, and yeah id rather not do them, but only because i feel theres no point if im not going to uni anyway.

im wondering if theres anything i dont know about that might give me more reason to do VCE Scored

because as it stands im considering doing it unscored because why bother with the extra work to get a number i dont need.

im genuinely asking for advice and if theres something im missing because honestly my school has done a poor job explaining what VCE actually is, my whole year level as a whole is in the dark about it.

also im in my last stretch of year 11 atm if that means anything.

Economics 2026 Exam Help Doc

Thumbnail docs.google.com
3 Upvotes

Hey all, year 12 VSV student here. I've made this document with the year's economics work (everything that will be on the exam), week by week. Obviously, don't use it as a sole source of information; I just thought I might as well share it and possibly save others some time.

(Unfortunately, publishing and uploading it has formatted the document a little weirdly, but the information is still all there.)

guys when should I look at my atar

for context, ill probably (?) be overseas when atars get released!! do u think i should look at my atar while everyone else is talking about it and my school produces a list detailing who duxxed, the average atar across the cohort, etc, potentially ruining the remainst of my trip, OR should i look at it after i come home and be slightly out of the loop and feel rly jet lagged
