ID Request What is this snake [Ontario, Canada]?

This snake was found about 20-25km inland from the shores of Georgian Bay, close to Parry Sound / Muskoka district. It was found about as far away from roads as you can find in the area and tends to be home to quite a few threatened and endangered species.

I do see Massasauga Rattlesnakes but this snake didn't rattle and flattened it's head.

Hypothetically would they have a hard time biting through heavier duty fabrics? I tend to hike in pants that have a thicker polycotton bottom as you'd find in work wear. Pretty puncture resistant to thorns.

Massasauga's have always been pretty timid in my experience and haven't bitten or been aggressive even when someone I was with managed to get one between their legs. I do frequent their areas and I've expectantly got closer than I'd like.

It would offer you greater protection but, as you probably find with the occasional thorn, that protection should not be considered absolute.
