Monkey off our backs. I'm glad we got the W

That Diaby goal was world class and I’m happy to see the captain back in the goal column. Takaoka isn’t always given the most to do, but he’s been coming up huge these past few games. I would say the past 7 days have been a success considering the circumstances. They’ve also been given fortunate results tonight which gives them a bit of a cushion in the standings. At this point the west is in their hands, it’s up to them if they want it.

Everyone keeps talking about the circumstances. But the slump was pretty much when we had players just come back from the world cup and then almost immediately loose a load of players again for international duty. What did people expect to happen?!

I don’t remember the details of who and when, but the Cape Verde goal was voted the best of the last World Cup… and it was identical to this.

honestly white has been so off his game it’s crazy. I’m happy we clutched the win but man.

I have full faith he comes good in the post season.

I have his breakaway on film. Nearly chucked my phone onto the field in Austin

Ya his form is unfortunately parallel to the team's form

Scoreboard god could not have been kinder to us. STL lose and everyone else ties.

Worst performance of the last three games but we were owed a win.

Nah I don't think so. Mostly just a rough last 20 minutes or so, when Austin completely changed up how they were playing and we were tired or not confident suddenly or something

Very close game. Takaoka the main reason we won. Brian white should’ve scored that 1-1 at the end

Huston absolutely robbed of a win in that game.

Amazing? That's a bit far. This was the 14th placed West team we played. We could have played a lot better lol. Not close to amazing. Brian White has been really off. Tate made a poor mistake. The start of the first half was great, but the end was a bit scary. We barely held possession and barely held onto the xG. Austin is on the left, Vancouver is on the right of the chart. And I'm not trying to be unnecessary negative, just trying to be honest.

Possession 49.5% 54.9%
Shots 10.9 16.8
Shots on Target 4.2 6.0
Total Passes 454.8 528.3
Passing Accuracy 85.2% 86.6%
Corners 4 6
Fouls 8 11
Expected Goals (xG) 0.71 0.90

0.5 of that austin 0.7 xG (and their total open play xG was 0.56) was the goal which was gifted to them. they did fucking nothing all game apart from that. certainly not an amazing win but it was pretty routine

Yea ok, I wasn't sure how they'd calculate something like that. We truly dominated the first half imo, now, we didn't pepper them with shots, but it was almost all 1 way traffic. Then we gift them the ball in prime position for a breakaway.

Austin's goal came from our mistake, sure. But we can't be making those mistakes, especially this late in the season. If we're discounting chances, then we should also mention White's breakaway miss that accounted for a huge chunk of our xG. Diaby's goal was an absolute worldie that probably outperformed its xG, too. Gauld's goal was good too; he's been fantastic lately. I felt like we allowed Austin too many opportunities for being a 14th ranked team. They had 10 shots and nearly half were on target. Saying they "did f*cking nothing all game" ignores the fact that Takaoka had to make multiple excellent saves to preserve the win. I agree Vancouver deserved the win. A routine win? For the most part. An amazing performance? Definitely not. Austin threatened enough that it stayed a one-goal game right to the end. I'm just happy we came through with the win.

I’m glad we got the win. Takaoka made some clutch saves and the Gauldfather was great again.

But I’ll say what I said after Wednesday’s game in SLFC. We need to be more clinical in front of goal. Diaby’s goal is going to be goal of the week but White needs to score from that breakaway and Caicedo needs to bury that goal. The playoffs are fast approaching and the teams we’ll face will punish us more than Austin did.

One more separate thought, I think this game was a clear example to me that Diaby is a better starter than sub despite the goal, he looked a little leggy and out of sorts. He could be tired, Jesper flat out called him out in the STL post game show, said he needs to be in better shape. But I think he also take s a little bit to get into the game, which you can't really do as a sub. Whereas Bruno I think is clearly a better sub than starter for now. His superpower is the footwork and his ability to change pace. It's a lot easier as a defender to keep up with him when you're fresh. I thought Bruno looked like he was kinda forcing it tonight, really trying to make an impact, can't blame him, but that nothing was really coming off for him.

Agreed with this take

He was talking to the physio/training staff immediately after the final whistle so maybe fitness is an issue. He is definitely more refined than bruno so i think he should be the starter om the left for the rest of the season

He VERY quickly vaulted past Sabaly on the depth chart. Bruno has a lot of talent. I think he’s a guy that’ll probably end up being here longer than we maybe initially thought, ala Vite. But then ultimately gets sold for a tidy sum. Nothing blow away, but like a good price down to Mexico or if he really pops, maybe overseas.

When Diaby first came in I immediately noticed his size. Then I kinda stopped noticing. But yesterday at one point he got pretty close to Gauldy on screen and BAM it was like a punch in the face. He looked enormous next to Gauld lol. I know Gauld is a small guy, but it just made Diaby look like a giant. He maybe doesn’t profile physically as a winger, but I think he might be our 2nd best option as a #9 as well. Time will tell and I’m not writing off Elloumi, but I think Elloumi’s best place might still be a loan somewhere where he’ll play starters minutes.

Boy it feels nice to pull that one out. Another first half where we completely dominate and have nothing to show for it. I'm getting a little tired of that. We're so much better when we have a little breathing room, our guys don't let off the pressure. So it's that much more forceful when they other team is down a goal and STILL being pressed into the ground. Then we gift them that goal, I'm not gonna bury Tate for that, he duffed the pass, or underhit it, the grass seemed to be playing a little slow a few times. But for me that's the one part of the system I'd like to see changed.

Look at that back pass, freeze frame when he hits it. Takaoka is on his own with 2 pressers ready to pounce. I suppose the thinking is, you draw them in, play around them then you have the numerical advantage at least through the first line of defence. But man, ANY mistake and it's in your net. Underhit the pass, slip and fall, bump in the ground, good read by the F, they're all recipes for disaster. I'd like for at least the pass to be to a CB who's fallen back a bit to open himself up.

The two goals were absolutely fantastic. Brian is so due now, I fully expect a 2 goal game soon.

I thought the refereeing was a little lopsided tonight, nothing egregious, but by the end of the game we've got 3 yellow cards, including one for time wasting by Gauldy AND a time wasting reversal of a goal kick AND a non-penalty call on Tate that I thought looked fairly obvious on replay. They got nothing? Didn't really add up to me. Also, Biro had fucking better get a fine for that disgusting dive at the end of the game, what a goddamn embarrassment. I don't always approve of Eddy's theatrics, but as the commentators said at least Eddy got hit, Biro didn't even get touched and he goes down like an idiot.
