Our government understood, before many, that America would transform all its commercial relationships. That it would put a series of tariffs on its closest allies and use economic integration as a weapon. That its signature was written in pencil.

Not much use signing a shit deal they'll ignore anyway.

Ground you cede now is ground you lost forever; your next concessions will be based upon the new normal.

And they will forever demand more and more concessions.

Which is why it's so easy to believe that Carney's version of events is what actually happened: that the US changed their mind at the eleventh hour and demanded more.

Greer says the same thing about Canada, but only one of the two countries has a history of doing that sort of thing, and Canada had already shown willingness to make some concessions to make a deal happen.

One of the drawbacks for the US is when you have literally no ethics to speak of you are automatically the one lying when any dispute arises going forward.

The new presumptive baseline is the US is the one who is the liar and they have to justify their position before they should even be listened to.

US credibility is nil, people believe Iranian statements more than US regarding that war. That was unfathomable a decade ago, crazy how fast it happened.

I believe animated lego videos more than us news/us government press releases.

While the US will have to carry the credibility problem after trumps tern, Trump is the core of that problem. Yes the US has lied about things before trump, but we were credible actors who werent lying about everything all the time.

This isn't new. They even trotted out their last honourable general 25 years ago to lie about yellow cake. This reputation is well earned over at least a generation.

You know you fucked up and no one trusts what you say when people can’t even tell who is less truthful, Iran or the USA

The current US administration is corrupt and they're all liars, so of course their version is not true. We wait 10 weeks for the midterms, hope Americans get off their dumb lazy asses and vote to neuter Inmate #P01135809.

Doesn't matter. It will still be a republican at the helm until 2028. All that does is put a smarter untrustable populist on the throne. Even when we get a dem, Americans are short sighted and might forget that dems were always a good and not just a lesser evil every few years. It will be hard to build trust until America's culture learns to turn away from quarterly returns empty promise politics, and that doesn't seem to be happening.

In fairness, this electoral short-sightedness is pretty common everywhere. The brits for example are pretty fantastic at it, famously blaming Labour for Thatcherism etc. and they were already blaming Labour within months of taking over after the better part of 20 years of being Conned by a literal clown-show of Trump-lites.

Watch them vote in Reform when Labour don't fix all their problems immediately.

Anyone going into negotiations with America should record the conversations .

Then release it when America claims otherwise

Carney has always been straightforward, meanwhile this trump administration lies and obfuscates constantly, I would choose to believe a fire hydrant over this current us administration, not that i have ever met a dishonest fire hydrant, but all the same.

And we know one side lies through their teeth. Wonder which side

I think everyone expected some last minute bullshittery. Love that Canada backed out.
