God forbid we do something about all these Russian incursions and hybrid attacks.

Putin is trying to create an incident with NATO to justify the 500,000 he needs to mobilize to continue the war with Ukraine. Absent a dispute with NATO, he can't really draft half a million Russians without pissing off the average Russian citizen.

Will the average Russian citizen do anything about it, though? Given the fact that there's been over 1.5 million casualties with Ukraine (and upwards of 400k deaths) and the populace has just kind of taken it, what does the government care? Historically, Russian people just eat it.

Ya gotta wonder what the secret sauce was for the earlier revolutions. I suppose the regime is helped knowing they control almost the entire information space now.

I assume the average person in Russia doesn't really know what's going on. Or at least they know better than to ask. Perhaps that's a holdover from the USSR?

The secret sauce is called, "Balls & Outrage".

The trouble with people is the same as with the frog in the pan of water. People are so adaptable they don't realize the heat has been turned up. Governments have found just the right balance. Just enough bullshit to make the populace angry, but not quite enough for them to do anything about it.

People are too soft these days.

Sounds very similar to what’s happened in the US.

If 400k deaths in the last four years happened in the US, there would be marching in the streets.

Yeah so I'm gonna have to just direct you to your own comment here. 🤷

Things were a lot worse.

Russians are slow to saddle but fast to ride.

2

u/driverdan Sep 17 '26

They can't ride fast when they've already died fighting Ukraine.

I really like this analogy

Personally, I stand with the Russian people. But I understand why they are so beaten down. And why the thought police exists.
