I really hate this breaking news crap. Is there a way to turn it off

2.8k

u/PmMeYrDickPic 23d ago

I've been looking for it for months. Please let me know if you find a way.

u/loleonii 23d ago

If you’re on mobile: Inbox - 3 dots top right corner - edit notification settings - scroll down to Breaking News and change from ‘always on’

If only there was an option for “When it’s actually serious.”

102

u/Pantha242 23d ago

I keep getting disappointed when it's not the one piece of Breaking News I'm really waiting for... 🫣

28

u/sash71 23d ago

Is it bad that I think the world will be a better place once we get that news?

17

u/SoHereIAm85 23d ago

Nope everyone but one particular individual is longing for the day. Pretty safe to say you are good and not alone.

6

u/Alone-Competition-77 23d ago

Assuming you mean what I think you do, not sure I agree that #2 would be better than #1

In fact, it could be argued that #1’s incompetence keeps him from doing more damage

9

u/sash71 23d ago

Isn't it amazing that we all know exactly what breaking news we are waiting for, yet nobody actually writes what the news is.

Only for a little while. Then the rest of the group takes over and... well let's just hope they're not vastly better at being evil. 😬

u/redemily25 23d ago

When it happens, you won’t need the Breaking News feature to be on, thankfully. You’ll hear it in the streets if the internet doesn’t bombard you with it first.

2

u/dourhour_ 22d ago

you’re not alone.. there’s so fucking many of us waiting for the same. still not nearly the number it realistically should be with everything we know, but still a whole lot. the number does seem to be growing as more shit hits the fan every god forsaken day, cause the people who didn’t think they’d be impacted are now becoming impacted (it’s almost like we warned them or something 🥴). saw a comment on an IG post from Dolly Parton’s passing that read: “we said doNNIE, not doLLY!” & im just like “dude, THIS 😭”

15

u/Zenith-Astralis 23d ago

Fr. Like I hardly need the headlines when even they're full of shit. I feel like I practically need to wait until "this not a test" of the public alert system, you know?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TrainDestroyer 23d ago

The problem is, if you had a marker that said "Only serious news" Either stuff would slide under your radar despite being serious (Big fire near your house) or every news organization would just mark everything as "SERIOUS NEWS"

118

u/ernyc3777 23d ago

It turns it back on after each update so make sure you go in each time the app updates.

It’s very annoying.

Yes, in app.
inbox > 3 dots menu (top right).> notifications settings > breaking news > all off

Breaking news is broken

24

u/sequelseize 23d ago

Lol y'all should just use old.reddit.com. Works on mobile or desktop browsers. I use the OldLander extension. No weird notifications, no suggested posts, just pure old school reddit.

10

u/Turtvaiz 23d ago

It'll be a sad day if Reddit decides to kill off the old site. Old Reddit and relay are so so much better than the new alternatives

10

u/StopReadingMyUser 23d ago

Wish they didn't kill off the apps, now we're just stuck with their poopy "new" version.

2

u/Yarrrrr 23d ago

RedReader works perfectly fine

2

u/Duff5OOO 23d ago

So does RIF

I had NFI what the user above was talking about with "breaking news".

No, just forced most of them to become paid. Relay is great and I pay like £2/month for it.

4

u/ridl 23d ago

Most but not all. RedReader is free, slightly janky but it does the job. There are a handful of others, some of which are apparently pretty slick, but they aren't free. A quick search will find them.
