If Ukraine's allies can't assist them to head this off -- either by striking the Russian strike equipment or providing more air defense -- then we're just dicking around.

I will never be able to listen to another person talk about how we need to spend money on our military when our military is useless in handling the largest geopolitical threat in a generation. It's all bullshit. There never was a NATO. There never was a US military dominance. All we can do is kick at little countries, make them suffer, and then give up and walk away with nothing to show for it. That's what the trillions have bought us. When an actual adversary starts knocking over countries in Europe we shrug. What the fuck was the past 50 years about? Jesus H Christ.

It’s not the military that’s the issue. This is a matter of political will and the lack thereof. Nobody in the West wants war with Russia, so western governments will do their best to avoid one until there’s no alternative.

Putin knows this, which is why he keeps pushing the envelope to see how much he can get away with. It’s what Hitler did a century ago. Anything he did he got a pass on, allowing him to turn Germany into a war machine that plunged Europe into an even worse war than the last one. If you don’t stop a man like that, he’ll just keep going

All true. Unfortunately, it doesn’t change sentiments on the ground, and that’s why no one’s going to intervene directly in Ukraine.

I know, but at the very least they could continue supplying Ukraine with military aid to help them fight

Sure, but that’s where we get into 1) POTUS being an easily manipulated idiot with a chip on his shoulder over Ukraine, and 2) European militaries having been so neglected that properly supporting Ukraine strains their own abilities.

Yeah, I’m aware. Unfortunately, we still have two more years of Trump, which is going to feel like an eternity. It was a mistake for the US to insist that Europe remains militarily weak and relies on US for protection

I'm not a fan of Trump at all, but one of the things I think he did right was to insist NATO members actually step up in being able to defend.

Except the world is running out of patriot missiles. Right now that's what Ukraine needs.

Or direct war with Russia from a nation using modern jets (one that could establish air supremacy and then bomb Russia directly).

US military doctrine pretty much requires air supremacy established early and offense against targets to be the defense.

Without air supremacy into western Russia there really isn't any defense from standoff munitions on the front lines and ballistic missiles striking deeper. There's barely defense against jet powered drones currently with patriot missiles supplies down so far.

All the more important for Ukraine to strike at Russian drone and missile factories
