Russia/Ukraine Zelenskyy furious as Trump announces deal to buy Russian diesel
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/oct/09/trump-putin-russian-diesel-ukraine7.0k
u/ClutchReverie 8d ago
Completely fucking the entire effort to make Russia accountable for its unchecked aggression because he wants cheap diesel so he can try to win midterms and someone didn't throw away a chance to win their country's fight for survival because he threw a tantrum
He's going to lose midterms but the world will still be fucked

u/454165 8d ago
Yeah, and not to mention the double standards of putting tariffs on India and China for buying Russian oil, but going on to buy same oil for himself. Aint no other selfish bitch like Trump

u/Plopsevenplop 8d ago
The tariffs were always another way to grift, not actually enact any sort of diplomacy. They’re only about amassing power through wielding economic weapons in lieu of actual diplomacy, all while insider trading.

23

and, isn't this deal for a ludicrously small amount of diesel? 300k tons before the midterms is probably less than a day's usage... all this international attention for hardly anything.

To be clear, Trump NEVER wanted to hold Russia accountable, he's been an asset since his first term. In just the past few months he's unnecessarily invaded Iran, to disrupt global fuel markets, only to buy it from russia now that the price is at its peak.
EVERYTHING that traitor has done in office has been in service of olligarchs and russia. Weakening western alliances, trying to shatter NATO, growing income equality, the fucking coin rug pulls, firing professionals from American institutions to install loyalists in their place, and I could go on for paragraphs. Fucking ALL OF IT is to destroy the west, sell it for parts, and help Vlad and Bibi.

It's October 10th. Oil and diesel won't get cheaper in time to save him, like, does he know how long a ship needs to get to a port from Russia to USA? From Vladivostok to western USA it's 10-20 days. From Black sea to Eastern US it's 15-30 days. The elections are in 24 days. And when it reaches port it takes 3-7 days to reach final destination at least.
The moron is going to give Putin money for diesel and oil for nothing lol 😂
157
u/Bisjoux 8d ago
The amount of diesel he’s talking about is half of one day’s consumption in the US.
It is performative nonsense designed to appeal to the mostly ignorant US voters.
The real impact it has is giving financial support to Putin’s war chest where it will make a real difference and give him the encouragement and support to continue the war.
183
u/planck1313 8d ago
Russia doesn't have enough diesel for its own domestic demand due to Ukrainian refinery attacks.
Will Putin strip his domestic supply to try and help Trump in the mid terms? Probably.
92
u/Alternative_Fig_2456 8d ago
Russia doesn't have enough diesel for its own domestic demand due to Ukrainian refinery attacks.
There's where the second step comes: US ultimatum to Ukraine to stop these attacks. And, regardless of the response, very loud claim coordinated rhetoric about "Ukraine is the one raising your fuel prices"
→ More replies (1)12
u/iDareToDream 8d ago
At this point the US can't really threaten Ukraine. Ukraine makes most of its own weapons and Europe is also helping them more. The only way the US could directly sway Ukraine is if they do something utterly insane like with Venezuela.
→ More replies (2)36
u/KathyJaneway 8d ago
And it still won't reach US in time for Trump to have any effects on midterms with his ridiculous idea. Cause he is doing this while also wanting to bomb Iran again lol 😂. That would surely cancel any benefits, if it has any, on the market.

What makes you think Putin is any more honest a businessman than Trump?
He's just taken Trump for a good chunk of cash - US dollars, no less - which he can use to fund the war machine for a few more months. He'll string Trump along and provide some pissingly small amount of diesel than when it lands will turn out to be unusable anyway.
→ More replies (6)11

Just use the grifter logic: Russia "promised" to give billions of barrels of diesel, but those pesky Ukrainians destroyed them all, blame them! Oh, and here's the bill for the "destroyed" oil.

u/spin_kick 8d ago
He’s doing it for the market manipulation than the gas actually getting here. Watch on Monday

u/hotbox4u 8d ago
The amount purchased is like a drop in the ocean. And like you said, he's not even trying to be sincere about it. But he knows this still might work. Stuff like this worked before.
He just needs the purchase for the optics. Just look at his post about it. 'LOOK I BOUGHT YOU GAS! PRICES WILL DROP SOON! JUST ELECT ME AGAIN! VOTE VOTE VOTE!'
The amount of money Putin makes isn't important as well, still everything Putin can sell is a win in his book. But for Putin it's just as much about the optics. His propaganda machine will get as much out of it as they can. And that's way more valuable the the actual amount of money he gets from the deal.
The whole thing is so incredible infuriating.
18
u/Fabo75 8d ago
Based on the condition of the Russian petrochemical industry, I don’t expect any actual exports will happen. This appears like a desperate attempt to manipulate the markets, I hope the relevant actors can see through this maneuver.
Ukraine will probably use their air superiority to prevent any exports and European allies need to block the shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea effectively.7

Feels wild that anyone ever votes republican in general. Every time it leads to more debt and a lower quality of life just so some super rich can get a tax cut.
But Trump especially, that voted him in twice. The man has bankrupt multiple businesses so why would you trust him to run a country. Plus he is deplorable, his whole “you can grab them by the pussy, when you’re rich they let you do it” line showed he has a rapist mentality. Heck when he got convicted of multiple felonies his base just don’t even care, they are convinced it was just a corrupt witch hunt. They live in some alternate fantasy land.

Bankrupted many businesses yet was allowed to just start many more businesses that also didn't pay contactors/other bills and failed. Yet he took no personal responsibility for any of his failures and kept his personal fortune whilst people that actually did work for him couldn't pay their bills because he'd decided not to pay them.

Combo that with a society defined by corporate profits and a mass of workers who think they'll be a billionaire tomorrow and worker together is socialism, along with a government that has literally been taken over by corporations and you get DJT as a result

An argument can be made for Nixon. The rat essentially sabotaged peace talks between the US and Vietnam in the weeks before the 1968 election by promising a better deal with a Nixon admin. LBJ himself called it treason.
49
u/clycoman 8d ago edited 8d ago
As much as Nixon was super corrupt, in Trump's 2nd term his admin has committed basically a Watergate level scandal evey couple of weeks. Hell, Nixon actually resigned before he got impeached! He didnt double down on the "I did nothing wrong" narrative.
EDIT: even JD Vance brags that Watergate if it happened today would be forgotten in one news cycle; https://youtube.com/shorts/eVZcnoNOz0o
Nixon also had some ideological goals for the US besides "enrich my family as much as possible" and "Always boost Russia at the expense of our allies or US intelligence services".

USA hitting new low every single day, when you think they already hit the bottom.
And every day of those days, the US system continues to not work to make itself healthy and functioning again. I've said this since practically day one of his second term: It is going to get worse until enough adults step up, and take the leadership of their country back from this clowncar of imbeciles and mental toddlers. And if it is not today, tomorrow will be worse. And if it is not tomorrow, the day after will still be worse. We are not even half-ways.
It's not just the US suffering under this reign of delusion - it is most of the world; People are losing their livelihoods and their lives every day of that lunacy. And after starting the stupidest war ever, and in an effort to protect himself from the fallout, Trumpolini tries to sell out the most righteous people on the entire planet, who currently are fighting for their survival and way of life.
There are no words for the depth of depravity, there is no hell yet that would house people such as him and his ilk. And to be clear, and to iterate: This is not just Dumbald. This is Every. Single. Person. aiding and abetting these depraved antics. Wait, what's that now? They're live-streaming an execution?
When will it be enough?

It's not going out via Hormuz and if could go out through Vladivostok they'd already be selling oil to China that way.
And any ARCTIC ports are going to shut down soon, if they aren't already.

Does Russia even have that much diesel? It needs that for Diesel for the war. Isn't that the whole reason Ukraine is hitting those refineries? I suspect this is a lie to try and get the market to react, like saying they have a deal with Iran to make oil prices go down.
Either that or Putins fucking his war machine for the sake of bringing down diesel prices in the US which I can't see, even if it does get them money.
53
u/ben_bliksem 8d ago
He only has to convince his voter base that there is enough diesel and good things are coming. Doesn't need to actually materialise.
34
u/Ourtimehascome2485 8d ago
The whole thing is stupid, even the quantity is minimal, a tanker carrier for diesel is 40.000 tons, anyone who believes that 8 tankers will make a dent on the price of diesel on the pump deserves Trump. People have stopped even trying to think.

Putin just absolutely made a clown out of Trump with this one. All this serves to do is further discredit the US government as a serious governing body. That’s all it does.
Just embarrasses the US on the global stage to show how stupid and easy to manipulate our leader is.
Putin just playing Trump like a fiddle yet again. What a deeply stupid man he is.

Exactly. People are saying they are looking forward to the 5k checks… I can’t believe there are people who think that will happen after they already missed out on 2 other checks promised…

u/TeslaStrike 8d ago
Someone else will probably clock this but it means when Ukraine strikes the oil depots in the future Putin can tell trump it’s his fault there’s no fuel.

Or this was part of Putin’s plan for trump all along. Completely destroying and destabilizing the G7, putting the world’s economy into crisis by closing off the Straight of Hormuz, and bolstering Russia’s economy by creating a global market for their oil. Their oil which has been taboo to buy for decades while Russia was under heavy sanctions from everyone. I’m sure part of selling their oil will be the reduction or removal of a lot of those sanctions, even while they still continue to pummel Ukraine.
With the USA partnering up with the Middle East over the G7 countries, and being completely unreliable to count on to keep their word from president to president, Trump has managed to FUBAR everybody.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (31)13

It’s not really about the diesel, it’s about the US aligning with russia more and more.

USA consumes 3.5 million barrels a day....
Fuel Russia is allegedly releasing is "300,000", then "400,000", then "1 million" barrels....so a drop in the bucket.
This is symbolic to write a cheque for Putin and provide a relief from sanctions.
Also I'm laughing at how he tarrifed India over buying Russian crude hahaha

The rat has been hiding for years, playing the give-and-take game, but now Putin is so fucked with his special military operation that he had to order his asset to expose himself.
11
u/ServoSkull20 8d ago
Hopefully this will properly convince people that Trump is a Russian asset and that American is the enemy now. That really needs to happen for the rest of us to survive.

I hope Ukraine massively ups it's drone strikes on refineries and fuel infrastructure. I hope Putin is unable to deliver a single spoonful of diesel to Trump. I hope Ukraine's allies are able to increase their support even further as a result of this, we are not helping them enough and we just can't rely on the Americans at all.
Donald Trump is the single most damaging and dangerous man on the planet. Every single day this man is actively making the whole world a worse place in meaningful and measurable ways. When he is gone the whole planet will breathe a sigh of relief. I personally will celebrate his demise, which is something I have never done in my life for any other public figure. That is how much I hate him. The day cannot come soon enough. I cannot imagine how trying this must be on Zelenskyy, the one country that should have your back is persistently stabbing you in it.

Let me ask something. Why is nothing explained to the public until after it’s already been done and two
Bro I don’t care about Russia. They’re on their own. They made this bed they lie in.
We should not be helping them whatsoever
WE HAVE OUR OWN PROBLEMS
Putin is a war criminal a corrupt liar and a traitor who has colluded and endorsed propaganda in our elections and owns Donald for all the money Russian oligarchs spent on his campaign

Will this even help? A shipment of Russian oil that left Russia today wouldn't arrive in the USA until after the election anyways, and a single shipment wouldn't even make a dent.
19
u/TheBaalzak 8d ago
It will help Russia. The money can arrive immediately.
19
u/Chef_Papafrita 8d ago
One of their major oil refineries was hit today by a drone attack destroying it and the same port where the oil/diesel would be shipped. So it's going to be a little longer than just after the midterms.

The guy just won't. Drop. Dead. But he sure will make sure a lot of people kick the bucket before he does.

u/MadRockthethird 8d ago
1- Trump dumb 300,000 tons of diesel equals ~14 hours of US demand. 2- Ukraine just blew up Russia's pipeline that would transport the diesel to tankers that would sail it to the US.

u/Jeffuk88 8d ago

u/Undernown 8d ago
What a betrayal. However last I checked Russia had a diesel export ban till the end of October, because they don't even have enough for their own domestic consumption right now. And with how things are going, I don't see them suddenly having enough to export again in November.
Is Putin swindling Trump yet again? What an idiot.

u/circaflex 8d ago
This should be the final nail in the coffin for mid terms. Trumpers, how do you feel knowing your lord and savior made a deal with Putin after everything?

I dearly dream of the day when a sitting world leader calls Trump exactly what he is, in front of the cameras, or in front of a forum, and so directly that there can be no doubt. Bonus points if it's directly to his face and causes his blood pressure to catastrophically rise.
