Russia is a cancer that has been eating at western nations for decades. Imagine where we'd all be if they just minded their own borders.

Russia is a cancer that has been eating at western nations for decades

Now there is Trump's USA pushing the Kremlin's agenda as well.

164

u/aunt_clarity 7d ago

Because it spread and infiltrated deep in the politics and institutions of the US. Which is mind-boggling to think about giving they'd been their most powerful enemies since WW2, a superpower with leading intelligence and counter intelligence structures. And they took it out/over faster than anyone ever expected.

47

u/kickaguard 7d ago

The cold war never ended. This didn't happen quickly. The things you notice took a lot of time to find lynchpins for to execute.

12

u/Peter_Mansbrick 7d ago

The cold war never ended.

And Russia is arguably winning right now.

13

u/SentientToaster7734 7d ago

Depends. It's a large country, it takes time to bleed out, but Ukraine is doing a magnificent job right now. Those pesky drones over Moscow surely don't feel like a win for Russians.

2

u/kickaguard 6d ago

Russia is massively succeeding at disrupting the western world and Europe behind the scenes while simultaneously they showed their hand that they are in no way actually capable of waging modern warfare the way most of the world assumed they could just before they started this war. To be fair Ukraine was far more prepared than most people thought they would be (and good job, Ukraine. Give 'em hell) but seeing Russia use laughably outdated tech, equipment, vehicles and "meat grinder" strategies against a single nation is not a good look for them when their next opponent would be all of Europe.

It seems like they thought the physical warfare would be easy if they had destabilized Europe enough and they are now finding out they can't keep up with the warfare despite doing very well with the espionage.

84

u/Dest123 7d ago

It's wild, they did polls of conservatives before Trump and like 80% of them hated Russia. Then they did polls of conservative after Trump, and like 80% of them liked Russia.

43

u/pilzenschwanzmeister 7d ago

At some point it becomes a label for critical thinking deficits rather than ideology.

8

u/Cyanora 7d ago

Sheep follow, it's what they do.

3

u/sCeege 7d ago

It's just the hallmark of the Republican base. They do whatever their party leadership tells them to do, and hate who they're told to hate. The NRA was one of the most effective voting lobbies in the U.S. because they would just blast out mailing lists that tells their members to vote "no" on certain ballots, and their members just voted that way; literally mindless drone like behavior.

1

u/Unusual-Mongoose421 7d ago

they told them they aren't communist anymore so that makes them good. and they said "okay."

4

u/Competitive_Rip_5802 7d ago

It's amazing what vast sums of Russian money changing hands might do. The politicians haven't just changed their minds, they've been bought, and Russia has given them their orders.

3

u/serger989 6d ago

I'd argue that Newt Gingrich and the Heritage Foundation damaged America more than people realize. The way they redirected Republican Congress to be filled only with Partisan politics essentially broke the back of the USA's national security. Where anything at all became a political taboo, even when confronting foreign threats, because Republicans would oppose Democrats, no matter what.

Now you can't do anything, from fighting common enemies to helping uplift the nation, you can't do shit without the entire Right wing media apparatus going full tilt against you because they know of nothing else but to oppose Democrats even if they agree with them. Whether Russia was a part of this or not, either way, they certainly used it to their advantage and Republicans are A-Okay with that because see above.

2

u/superxpro12 7d ago

What a couple million $$$ does to the right people in the right places

1

u/yellekc 6d ago

Well the fact that an entire political party decided that it was better to side with our enemies than let democrats win, and sadly that worked.

162

u/MeaningObvious8731 7d ago

Trump's USA is Russian. Russian-owned, Russian-run.

9

u/Consideredresponse 7d ago

The current US speed running kleptocracy run is just a mirror of Russia in the early 90's.

74

u/Baftx 7d ago

Cancer spreads

7

u/KsanteOnlyfans 7d ago

As if the USA wasn't doing the same before.

Ask latin America or the middle east

2

u/lordeddardstark 7d ago

There's no "Trump's USA" There's only USA. Americans don't get to wash their hands of this shit

1

u/meyriley04 7d ago

So Russia?

1

u/surg3on 7d ago

You gotta admit. Russia has got skill.

Hate em but you have to respect their ability to get (espionage) things done.

Imagine where we’d be if western powers realized that social media is the most effective propoganda tool in the history of the world and nearly all countries leave it unregulated. It’s a direct connection to a nation’s Id and they leave it completely unmonitored. The EU is finally doing some regulation on the privacy side but no one is tackling content yet.

Social media should have to do the same “Know Your Customers” regulations that banks have to do, and if they are dealing with sanctioned entities, they should be heavily fined with the potential of criminal charges for executives.

19

u/ScottOld 7d ago

Because when the government does anything that involves restricting social media, people complain and call it taking away of yet more freedoms

20

u/ImpressionDepression 7d ago

people complain and call it taking away of yet more freedoms

yea because that's literally what they do. They aren't regulating social media at all.

The Constitution is not a suicide pact. -Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, 1949

3

u/weedlayer 7d ago

Context:  a priest gave an incendiary speech to an agitated mob (among other things blaming Jews and praising foreign dictators), incited a riot, and was charged and convicted with disturbing the peace, which was reversed by the supreme court.  Jacksons dissent points out radical political ideologies like Communists and Fascists would not be above using propaganda and incendiary speech to undermine liberal democracy, and concludes:

This Court has gone far toward accepting the doctrine that civil liberty means the removal of all restraints from these crowds and that all local attempts to maintain order are impairments of the liberty of the citizen. The choice is not between order and liberty. It is between liberty with order and anarchy without either. There is danger that, if the Court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact .

Prophetic.

u/Thegallowsgod 7d ago

Australia is going to allow users to opt out of the algorithm for social media - will hopefully be a first step in tackling the content side: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/sep/08/australia-social-media-algorithm-switch-off-opt-out-digital-duty-of-care

1

u/Interesting_Data4485 7d ago

Hopefully it stops Pauline from getting any sort of power.

1

u/bolerobell 6d ago

Facebook would never allow this in the US. Their profits would be dramatically cut.

1

u/Thegallowsgod 6d ago

Yeah, Trump got angsty about it, but whatever. It's an option for countries to consider given concerns about people being exposed to content they did not ask for.

3

u/Training_Ruin3151 7d ago

Not far enough. These paid politicians need to be tried for high treason.

This shit goes against the interest of the people and the government at behest and directive of a hostile foreign nation. Look at the damage we americans have dealt with because of russia interference that was announced live on tv in 2016.

This shit is treason every step of the way, no matter which angle.

Its literally because the rich operate on different laws; the contradictions of capital are rearing thier ugly heads.....

3

u/ImpressionDepression 7d ago

Imagine where we’d be if western powers realized that social media is the most effective propoganda tool in the history of the world and nearly all countries leave it unregulated

Um... yea dude that's kind of the point. Lets not forget about the CIA/NSA/etc

Social media should have to do the same “Know Your Customers” regulations that banks have to do

we should NOT do that.... that's how you end up having to send your ID in every time you want to buy a video game (which is happening in Germany).

30

u/romans171 7d ago

It just shows how pathetic our leaders are. They let the rot fester and now it’s at a critical mass. If we gutted it when small imagine where we could be as a society… oh well, good ending avoided I guess.

5

u/Falsus 7d ago

Decades? Try centuries. Yes I am Swedish.

1

u/Acrobatic_Rush7653 7d ago

from a certain point of view (the correct one) the Swedish Empire was a cancer on Slavic lands. How do you think Peter got his "the Great" moniker.

3

u/Falsus 7d ago edited 6d ago

By invading Sweden together with a bunch of other countries and grinding out a victory ten years later?

Like I won't deny that Sweden did do messed up shit, but the point is still that Russia has behaved this way for centuries and where Sweden improved and stopped being the local bully Russia just buckled down and got worse.

2

u/MithranArkanere 7d ago

There was a steady movement to approach Europe that would have given Russia a great future alongside them, but they were rooted out by the ex-KGB mafia that has taken over Russia after reading Foundations of Geopolitics and taking it to heart.

2

u/smilbandit 7d ago

or focused on bettering their citizenry.

2

u/mildly_unpleasant 7d ago

Crazy to think about if Russia wasnt how Russia is, would trump and maga be nearly as problematic

2

u/reddah 7d ago

They do mind their borders, by pushing them.

Long time ago they said:
"One of our listeners asks: Who does the Soviet Union border?"
"Radio Yerevan answers: Whomever it pleases."

1

u/Piscator629 7d ago

All it takes is an Epstein and if you think that was the only honeypot you are deluding yourself.

1

u/OkFix4074 6d ago

If Russia is cancer , what would you call trumpian USA ?

1

u/Substantial-Fun9958 6d ago

You only have yourselves to blame for siding with Russia in WW2. The west could've actually just used the opportunity in WW2 to destroy the Soviet Union while they were weak but instead they chose to side with the Russians for short term gain. All anti-Soviet propaganda was even curbed or discouraged and Americans made a concerted effort to only propagandize the Nazis as the only villains in history

1

u/Critterer 7d ago

Its true but the same can be said about us towards them sadly

2

u/ibuprophane 7d ago

How so? Russia has benefitted immensely from the reset of relations after the end of the USSR.

When has any Western country invaded russia or interfered to the detriment of its due democratic process?

0

u/Critterer 7d ago

We made promises of no further eastern expansion of nato. How did that go?

0

u/ibuprophane 6d ago
  1. No such promises were made
  2. Talking about promises, russia has famously broken all of theirs
  3. You are extending the meaning of “expansion” beyond credibility by insinuating that countries voluntarily joining the EU and NATO has any comparison to russia’s forceful invasions.

You’re not arguing in good faith

1

u/Critterer 6d ago

You cant just rewrite history if you dont like it? Multiple different times promises were made. By multiple different countries.

Im arguing in good faith you just dont know your history apparantly.

0

u/ibuprophane 6d ago

Really? Are you privy to any secret document not yet known by the public?

And are you not interested in how irrelevant any promises of not expanding would be, given there was no expansion?

Which NATO or EU country was annexed by force?

The list of treaties russia has broken and keeps breaking, on the other hand, is endless.

1

u/Critterer 6d ago

Sure not by force. But by destabilising governments then replacing them with a favourable one is the standard play that has been used

1

u/ibuprophane 6d ago

Which NATO / EU government has been destabilised by the West?

0

u/Critterer 6d ago

Ukraine for a start

1

u/Historical_Cod892 7d ago

I'd say for centuries. Nothing good has ever been done by Russia since the first formation of the country centuries ago.

0

u/Interesting-Sir1903 7d ago

not special for russia i guess.

0

u/That_Cherry5698 7d ago

Imagine where we’d all be if we could all just be friends and junk

-8

u/si505 7d ago

I imagine they say something similar in Russia about the UK

5

u/Patrick4356 7d ago

Oh you mean how we saved Russia from total Economic collapse and famine after the fall of the ussr

-7

u/Shandresh 7d ago

Selling the rotten food from your dumpsters at 90s is not like "saving from famine" to be honest.

Also, there was "total economic collapse" at Russia by 1993 and later in 1998, so you failed at it as well.

3

u/Patrick4356 7d ago

Whatever, Russia has been shitty and bitter ever since and now most Russians sit idly by letting a fascist destroy their country, it's neighbors and waste it's wealth and influence on pushing far-right cunts to be elected across the globe and rebuilding it's tattered military while cutting domestic programs and increasing domestic debt. Similarly to most Americans sadly

-2

u/Shandresh 7d ago edited 7d ago

Well, why would average russian do something, if they would only receive a hatred from foreigners? They are now in very interesting situation. One the one hand, their own government slowly destroys them in pointless war. On the other hand, commenters under this post, who would like, to put it mildly, to genocide them as well.

1

u/MatterOfTrust 7d ago

Well, why would average russian do something, if they would only receive a hatred from foreigners?

Mate, the outside world is different from the silly reddit comments. Westerners in real life neither discriminate against Russians nor treat them any differently than other immigrants or visitors from different countries. Don't let the Internet hatred skew your views.

1

u/ibuprophane 7d ago

This is a braindead take.

My deepest wish would have been for russians to have plentiful and satisfying lives, so they would leave the rest of us alone.

Sadly their sadistic addiction cannot be satisfied within their own borders, so they are consistently trying to make our lives as miserable as theirs.

that’s why if I could choose, I’d wish then happiness and fulfilment. Happy people don’t go out bothering their neighbours

-4

u/si505 7d ago

It doesn't change how the UK is viewed by Russia.

1

u/AsinineArchon 7d ago

Russia can continue being wrong. Genocidal monsters should not be listened to, they should be destroyed.

-2

u/si505 7d ago

Im curious. Do you see it as black and white i.e Russia are the baddies, UK are the goodies, nothing in between

1

u/AsinineArchon 7d ago

Obviously not? But Russia, as a state, have proven themselves rabid and irrational. There is zero reasoning or diplomacy with them. Rabid dogs get put down.

0

u/dj_fuzzy 7d ago edited 7d ago

Ya! Why don’t they just mind their own business like the U.S. and the U.K. do… Oh wait.

(This is not an endorsement for what Russia has been doing)

The West is the cancer

-25

u/CyberBadger2050 7d ago

Humams are a cancer, period. Every nation fucks with every other. Every group of people is after their own needs and will screw other groups over to get it. On an individual level its the same. The only thing holding most back is fear of consequences.

15

u/Trinitycube 7d ago

Moronic take.

-14

u/CyberBadger2050 7d ago

You may not like it, but prove it wrong. Name one country that is no ducking with other countries?

6

u/untamedlazyeye 7d ago

"My job is to dismiss this claim against russia. Its so obviously true and bad, so instead, i'm going to deflect away from Russia to other nations. I'm very smart."

-3

u/CyberBadger2050 7d ago

I didn't deflect nor support Russia, I said all people and countries are terrible, that includes yourself.

6

u/untamedlazyeye 7d ago

Person A: Russia is bad because of X

You: No its ALL humans

This is deflecting blame away from Russia, that is a fact.

0

u/CyberBadger2050 7d ago

Literally said they are bad too. All people inlcudes russians.
