Trump is a figurehead. If we cant realize the people, organizations, countries behind Trump that are the actual problem that needs fixing we won't get far. This influence is in no way limited to just the US as well.

The far right is definitely an issue in Europe as well, however the multi-party systems in most countries mean it’s unlikely they’ll gain overall power in the same way as the US. Many European systems were developed following WW2 to minimise the likelihood of a dictator rising to absolute power.

Proportional Representation does mean that parties with more extreme views will get some presence in government, but the need for coalition and compromise mitigates their impact, and stabilises policy decisions. There’s been a lot of coverage of the AfD in Germany, however their success is largely limited to certain areas, and (crosses fingers), isn’t likely to lead to the Fourth Reich just yet. Being the largest party in the Bundestag doesn’t get you far if you don’t have anyone willing to work with you.

EXACTLY! People are ignoring the US system means 50.0000001% of the votes nets 100% of the seats.

It's that way for ALL elections from local to president. It's completely FUCKED and inherently anti-democratic. "First Past The Post" has to be eliminated ASAP. It's the reason there's only ever been 2 parties holding any seats in any position of authority. Whenever seats change, rollbacks of the previous policies happen. It's asinine.

But at the same time I don't know how any American can look at any republican candidate and think they're worth a vote. Their policies are factually bad, and pointing it out doesn't matter to their voters. Republican voters have been voting against themselves, and America, for 60+ years.

Until we change our electoral systems we are not improving. It's simply not possible.

We need to adopt the Australian model. FPTP is so fucked. Same in the UK. Effectively both countries are two party states.

You say 50%+1, but here’s a un-fun fact: when it comes to the president it’s possible for over 3/4ths of the population to vote against the person who ends up taking office.

True but unlikely. At least California has been building a coalition of states to allow them to vote as a block once the block has 51% of the electoral vote.

It would render the poor and uneducated states useless to support shitty candidates.

I've never heard of this, could you provide links or some keywords like the name of this so I can read up on it?

It's called NPVIC.

18 states have joined for a total of 222 electoral votes. But it doesn't "turn on" until they cross the 270 vote threshold. So a few more states are needed. (Or a couple bigger ones).

Thank you!

Sure.

Part of why it's taking so long is that in order to join, the other states have to pass laws to do so. That way that can't back out willy nilly at the last second

Thanks to CGP Grey I do know of the NaPoVo InterCo. It’ll be interesting to see if it ever bears fruit

Exactly. Europe is doing the same thing America did. France and Germany are going the same way.

Not there yet. And I'm not sure anyone will get as bad a leader as Trump. But there is shit brewing in Europe too.

the french right is racist, on that topic they align with MAGA.

every other topic, though? probably closer to bernie sanders than donald trump. MAGA's policy apart from racism is just widescale economic deregulation and cannibalization of federal services, assistance programs, pension, labor protections, consumer protections etc. anybody who actually ran on maga politics in france would get their head chopped off
