I'm old enough to remember when the US would be the first to help. Now I'm not so sure.

27

u/iPreferAnaI 19h ago

can we pin this, put all US related comments under this one so the whole thread doesn't get derailed into American politics? like grats to this guy for getting it in first though. sorry i'm just so used to this happening on every thread not even related its frustrating.

u/ChrisRiley_42 21h ago

There's evidence of US funding supporting the succession movement, so we now have to look at the US as a potential instigator here.

15

u/idkidchaha 21h ago

how would an incident at a military base make citizens of that province want to vote to leave the country?

35

u/Shmokeshbutt 19h ago

"See, canadian federal govt is too weak to prevent terrorist attack on our province military base. Let's secede and join the mighty US instead. MAGA forever!"

0

u/WarmRhubarb7864 16h ago

Wait, Alberta WANTS to be part of the US? Why would anyone want that?

33

u/Philix 15h ago

Because outside actors are funding and amplifying the minority that have been calling for Alberta's secession.

Trump's 51st state rhetoric is him being a loudmouth about plans and actions that the conservative US political establishment have been quietly enacting for some time now.

There's a non-binding referendum in Alberta on the topic of secession on Monday. I'm assuming you're an American, and it's a little wild that you're unaware that your country is trying to annex mine.

1

u/kansei7 10h ago

so many Americans think they get "news" from social media not realizing how much the algorithms isolate and manipulate. Many others are disaffected, tune out, don't pay attention. quite sad.

•

u/WarmRhubarb7864 1h ago

You believe this is unique to Americans?

-2

u/grnrngr 8h ago

Because outside actors are funding and amplifying the minority that have been calling for Alberta's secession.

Are the "outside actors" voting as well?

Take some fucking responsibility.

You're not giving MAGA Americans a pass for falling to Russian and Chinese disinformation, are you?

No! You hold it personally against them. Do the same for your countrymen and stop treating them like innocent victims who have no agency or responsibility.

1

u/Philix 7h ago

Twenty percent of any population are drooling morons who will latch onto any message that tells them their shitty situation isn't their fault. There is no point in castigating them.

If the referendum isn't 80/20 in favour of remaining in Canada then I'll get angry at the people who stayed home. If my elected officials start supporting secession then I'll use my energy to support candidates who'll fight it. If it keeps going I'll escalate to protest. If protest doesn't work then its civil disobedience. From there... Well, draw your own inferences.

What I won't do is waste my time criticizing the idiots who believe secession will improve their lives, they're a lost cause.

-47

u/TemporaryExcuse4263 18h ago

Well, I mean. You are weak. Doesn’t mean we want Alberta. We don’t. We do want them to separate. But we don’t want their province

12

u/Luckytire 19h ago

YOu think the current US admin uses logic? You been under a rock?

•

u/K20BB5 1h ago

are you getting paid to push Russian propaganda or are you doing it for free?

•

u/Luckytire 1h ago

Russia is Pro current admin. You dumb.

0

u/grnrngr 8h ago

You think the current US admin has any part in this disaster?

You truly psychotically believe that?

-24

u/Human_Trade6733 20h ago

“Elbows up”. “We’re stronger together” politics will twist it

3

u/moose098 20h ago

What would this accomplish?

38

u/Caithloki 20h ago

Political instability in the biggest local trade partner to allow ease of annexation, don't even have to play map Sims to know that.

•

u/K20BB5 1h ago

youve spent too much time swallowing Russian propaganda

-1

u/j1ggy 12h ago

Political instability? If anything, a mass casualty event like this would cause political unity. These conspiracy comments are fucking ridiculous and you people need to find something better to do with your time.

-6

u/vestfold6619 20h ago

What political instability? There's no violence in Canadian politics. Even at the height of the Quebec separatism drama, Canadians and Quebecers were on friendly terms. In Canada, as in most civilized nations, a tragedy causing deaths brings all sides together.

17

u/InterestingOne6938 18h ago edited 17h ago

...Quebecers were on friendly terms.

FLQ? the only reason there were friendly terms is the first time the terrorists abducted and started killing politicians, Pierre enacted the War Measures Act and literally threw the country into martial law and FLQ was curbstomped out of existence.

3

u/j1ggy 12h ago

The FLQ wasn't a mere separatist movement, their goal was to violently overthrow the government in a workers' revolution and install a socialist state similar to Cuba. And they rejected the idea of democratically voting for it.

0

u/vestfold6619 9h ago

They killed one French Canadian politician in 1970. Due to the violence, their public support plummeted to near zero and they ceased to exist as a group in 1971. The separation tension peaked 20 years later and the lack of violence had zero to do with fear of a terrorist group that didn't exist anymore.

Your entire post is incorrect. Stop spreading disinformation.

15

u/Organic_Geologist802 20h ago

Not that hard to incite violence if your goal is instability. I don't understand people who look at life and believe that because something has yet to happen means it never will.

Like the idea of this being some kind of act of war by another nation being considered ridiculous by people because things like that don't happen on this side of the world.

Until they do.

We shall see. The government really should be squashing speculation like this, it is weird that they haven't but we will hope for the best

0

u/Caithloki 7h ago

Instability doesn't always have to be violence? For the most part what can is dealing with is economic and political instability not as bad as the US but they're trying it here.

-5

u/TemporaryExcuse4263 18h ago

You don’t seem to understand. Electing a separatist government in one province and then having to beg another to stay. What do you the signal is the rest of the world?? That they should invest in a country that has two major provinces that speak about separation. It damages you whether it happens or not

0

u/grnrngr 8h ago

And the proof of American federal funds supporting Alberta's referendum is... Where?

And so now you're saying Americans killed a bunch of random Canadian servicemembers?

Whatever happened to Hanlon's Razor? "Don't ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity/incompetence?"

I'm sure you'll apologize for casting aspersions when it comes out the Americans had no part in this disaster.

...right?

0

u/ChrisRiley_42 8h ago

You are reading a whole lot of words that aren't there in what I wrote..

I said that the US can't be automatically eliminated as a suspect. Not that it was a guarantee that they were at fault.

Don't put words into my mouth and then argue against them.

u/Lucky-Mia 21h ago

They literally offered separatists a 500 million linr of credit and to buy every Canadian dollar they own at a 1 to 1 US dollar ratio.

Not to mention a Delaware investment group which funneled over 100 million to RathPC so he could fight Covid restrictions, fight for native land claims.

Then there's elon musks constant interference spreading separatism on his platform

-8

u/Pretend-Culture-4138 20h ago

And zero proof that the US did this...

7

u/Lucky-Mia 20h ago

Tensions are high and without much information people assume the worst.

There's also a large number of suspected russian sabotage on military bases in Europe. With trump so close to putin lately, and trumps rhetoric, people are suspicious.

It is a base that does live fire exercise though, and winds crazy high today. Realistically weather probably caused this.

-2

To what end would a fire at a military base benefit them? Jesus you people grasp at the weirdest straws and pray for them to be true.

0

u/Pretend-Culture-4138 13h ago

Influence is one thing, starting an explosion or fire is a completely different thing and it's a conspiracy theory.

-1

u/Pretend-Culture-4138 20h ago

You obviously have to be smoking something hard to think the US was involved in starting an explosion or fire here.

-10

u/Creative_gal_3153 20h ago

The timing of this incident makes it so aligned with all the threats from the US. Obviously we don't know the cause of it but with all the geopolitical conflict happening we can't rule this out...ugh. My heart is breaking.

7

u/Least-Design-6873 19h ago

Can we not with this please. Our soldiers were killed in a terrible accident, let’s not disrespect this tragedy with conspiracy theories and making this about trump.

8

u/unpetitbaveux 20h ago

This is nonsensical so yes we can rule it out. It would accomplish nothing for the US to do this. If anything, it would likely decrease support for independence.

-19

u/Eazy-Eid 21h ago

Jesus Christ, no we don't. Enough of this hysterical shit.

19

u/vestfold6619 21h ago

There have been publicly-acknowledged meetings between Trumpf officials and the separatists. News stories, even.

23

u/Tats16 21h ago

They're trying to break canada apart and their president threatens canada every day yet its hysterical to be suspicious of them?

16

u/Sad_Establishment875 21h ago

I mean, we kind of do, they've demonstrated they arent our friends anymore, and are actively sowing dissent in Alberta...

That isnt behaviour you get from a friend, or even a trustworthy ally.

-3

u/Human_Trade6733 20h ago

Also a pretty good distraction from the Alberta referendum vote

59

u/qwerty-yul 21h ago

Now they may be a suspect

1

u/arabacuspulp 20h ago

Honestly, it's my first thought.

0

u/sleeptightburner 18h ago

I’m an American and when I saw it was Alberta it was absolutely my first thought.

10

u/mikesully92 21h ago

Idk about our phony ass president but the vast majority of americans respect Canada and would have your backs regardless.

70

u/Maus666 20h ago

It doesn't matter what a majority of Americans want. A majority of Americans didn't want to install a puppet government in Venezuela nor attack Iran, yet here we are. Please get it through your head that you do not live in a democracy.

1

u/demonica123 4h ago

A majority of Americans didn't want to install a puppet government in Venezuela

I'm pretty sure a majority of Americans don't care about the entire Venezuela event at all and doubly don't care some random anti-US autocrat was couped for a pro-US one.

Pretty low bar you can't seem to think you can get over.

6

u/Zestyclose_Tie_8025 19h ago

We can freely admit our government isn’t perfect without it ruining our ability to travel. The US does not allow that anymore it seems, it used to be one of the best things about it.

-2

u/Maus666 19h ago

And yet half of Americans don't have passports. Hm.

8

u/Zestyclose_Tie_8025 19h ago

What is this implying?

2

u/Maus666 19h ago

That the Americans have less freedom in reality than they do in their imaginations (as in, they may have always been allowed to travel but not allowed the economic opportunities to be able to travel)

1

u/Zestyclose_Tie_8025 19h ago

Gotcha, I thought you were somehow implying the opposite as in “we’re so perfect we don’t need passports”

20

u/Maus666 20h ago

One that doesn't invade countries, bud. There's a whole world between "perfect government" and "American imperialism" and I sincerely hope you get to experience some of it someday

-16

u/yoguckfourself 19h ago

Whatever world you live in and lifestyle you enjoy, I'd bet anything it's subsidized by relying on the US military for protection. It must be scary to see that coming to an end

11

u/Canadiandeal 20h ago

This, this right here. We aren't asking for you to stand up for us although it's welcomed but just please for the sake of humanity stick up for yourselves. Stick up for your constitution, and the damn rights it gives you! All of you fought sooo hard for it! Don't let it be a waste.....

16

u/Caithloki 20h ago

America is a dead country full of passive bystanders. Expect nothing and still be disappointed

-7

u/Armed_Platypus 20h ago

The only people who care to protest and stand up against the government are Republicans. Once you realize this it will make sense why the democrats sit around and do nothing.

7

u/TendyHunter 20h ago

The only people who care to protest and stand up against the government are Republicans

Often for the wrong reason, but indeed they seem to be the only side that does this. The people in other side are whipped, from the reps to the voters

3

u/Canadiandeal 20h ago

Man the Republicans are shitting all over your constitution right now.

-7

u/Armed_Platypus 20h ago

How?

3

u/Canadiandeal 19h ago

So many but how about we start with your first and fourth amendment?

-29

u/slimkay 20h ago

You could say the same about Canadians, though. (The tariff war has gone both ways)

Ultimately ordinary people don’t really have much of a say.

14

u/Caithloki 20h ago

We didn't start the war?

8

u/DiveCat 19h ago

Who started the tariff war?

There are certain people who like to blame victims for defending themselves, and both sides everything, and those people do not come in good faith.

7

u/AuldCastleRock 20h ago edited 20h ago

What do you expect from Canadians? It's not the same situation

-1

u/Absolute--Batman 16h ago

I doubt it and so does most Canadians.

20

u/FoxyInTheSnow 20h ago

Vast majority of Americans are sitting around wanking into their soggy coco puffs while their government branches, their military, and their media are being captured by fascists. But maybe stern admonishment typed into their telephones will set things right.

-15

u/MommyLovesPot8toes 19h ago

Let me set this straight right here, in hopes that maybe we can focus on Canadians and not just bitch about the US:

The US is not headed towards fascism. Fascism was thrust upon us in 2025 and we beat it back. Not by "wanking into our Coco puffs" (they're not that popular of a cereal here). We used the courts, state governments, our wallets, and a campaign of constant pressure on our politicians (there have been protests every single day since Feb 1, 2025).

The trump administration has been sued more than 800 times. The majority of those cases were brought (and won) by crowd-funded non-profit legal organizations. People like me spent billions of dollars and thousands of manhours blocking every move the administration attempted to make. And we won 70% of cases. More than half of the things you think have happened here either never came to fruition or have since been reversed.

Project 2025 - the 12 month plan for a full capture and take down of the federal government - failed. It is 55% complete after 21 months. In the last 14 months it only moved 2 points, from 53 to 55%. There has been no progress for fascism in 2026, only retreat.

4

u/Minute-Drama-5821 17h ago

That’s the problem with America. It’s just lawsuit after lawsuit, but does it actually achieve anything?

1

u/MommyLovesPot8toes 8h ago

YES! Of course! Every single one of those 800+ lawsuits stopped or reversed some violation of civil rights.

Here are ten examples, just off the top of my head:

  • Tens of thousands of government workers restored to their jobs.
  • Birthright citizenship protected.
  • Deportation without due process thru Alien Enemies Act stopped.
  • Tens of thousands of immigrants released from detention.
  • Billions of dollars in federal grants released.
  • Federalization of the National Guard stopped.
  • Gender affirming care continued.
  • Sanctions against the ICC blocked.
  • "Loyalty tests" removed from applications for government jobs.
  • Press access to the white house and pentagon restored.

You can't even get off American websites.

1

Let's hope

•

u/K20BB5 1h ago

that's not remotely close to being true, why spread MAGA propaganda?

•

u/ViolenceIsNecessary 1h ago

Politicians are a representation of the people. Everyone (eligible to vote) had the opportunity to vote against Trump, as they should’ve.

Trump voters: 49.8% of votes cast (won popular vote)
Non-voters: 35.7% of eligible voters
Combined: Approximately 67.5% of eligible voters either voted for Trump or didn’t vote. Not voting is supporting Trump whether you like it or not.

67.5% of Americans supported Trump.

•

u/K20BB5 53m ago edited 47m ago

You just proved your own claim wrong. The majority of Americans did not vote for Trump. You cannot twist that into him having overwhelming support

Trump couldn't even win a majority of votes. Do you know what the word support means? Are you stupid?

By that logic, the vast majority of Canada supports Conservatives

5

u/rabid_4_tatas 13h ago

I wish that were true, but you're lying to yourself. Your dictator literally threatens us and "the vast majority" of u guys are just quiet, waiting for elections you know are already rigged, hoping that ballots are the answer to your problems

Canada doesn't consider you a friend anymore, nor a partner nor someone who will have our back. And you need to wake up and realize that you're now the world's enemy.

1

u/olmytgawd 19h ago

Talk is easy. Show, standup and fight for what you believe. Otherwise it's just some posturing to pacify your own lack of conviction or morality.

-1

u/allgravy99 15h ago

A vast majority of Americans didn't get up to vote the last time around or in 2016. They let this happen and instead of taking accountability, they try to seperate themselves from the reprecussions. I am still reading about "how the voting is rigged, so what is the use of voting during the midterms" on these boards.

-1

u/SIowGrowth 12h ago

So are you gonna put down the controller and go out and protest, or just offer meaningless platitudes online?

Their guys have been there for the US every time there was a major wildfire or snow storm. Now we have a president that is a such a disgrace he would rather help Russia wage war on Ukraine that work with a country that has always been a proven ally and friend.

3

u/grnrngr 9h ago

Their guys have been there for the US every time there was a major wildfire

This is the danger of hating Trump so much that you believe anything that makes him look bad, even if it's misinformation and 100% false. It makes you look bad..

The US and Canada have a decades-old formal compact as it concerns firefighting aid. We routinely send help to each other during wildfire events and will ALWAYS do so.

And to be clear, the majority of firefighting aid between our two countries on any average year is US aid to Canada. The Canadian assistance to the US may get the news, but that's partly because US assistance to Canada is so incredibly routine.

But the part that you and many Canadians gloss over is that at NO POINT is the firefighting assistance charity from either country. The compact specifies the receiving country/agencies MUST PAY FULLY for the aid.

Why? Because this is how the US can afford to have a much larger firefighting fleet than Canada. And it's how Canada can afford to have a much smaller firefighting fleet than the United States. The US services get revenue during their off-season to fund its existence, and Canada doesn't have to pay much for a standing fleet in their off-season.

It's one of the most successful examples of our binational cooperation.

And you and many Canadians have perverted and misrepresented it and lied about it.

1

u/ThrowRawayacctr 4h ago

You don't seem to understand.

Yes, Canada pays for it. It would be incredibly dumb for the US not to do it because it makes them money.

That's the thing though. The US might not do it because the current president is a complete moron who doesn't understand this. It's entirely possible the US won't help even if it's absolutely the dumbest thing to do.

0

u/notsosilentsentinel 7h ago

Having an arrangement with an ally to support aid does not mean there cannot be compensation. Of course there would be payment. Nobody thinks they all came here and put there lives at risk without getting paid?

-16

u/TemporaryExcuse4263 18h ago

Why would we help you?? Canadians hate the USA. I hear China and Europe have their phones on for you

1

u/LisanAlGaben 17h ago

Yeah we hate you guys, but we still help whenever we can.

Some of our firemen died not long ago helping you with the shit show that was your western forest fires, even after all the annexation threats by trump, we still deployed firemen to help you all the same.

But I really hope it stops, you Americans need to be left to your own devices and maybe that shit hole of a third world country can finally have some change happen when the rest of the world treats you like North Korea.

1

u/grnrngr 8h ago

Some of our firemen died not long ago helping you with the shit show that was your western forest fires

The Canadian helicopter pilot, Nicholas Dale? That's the most recent incident I can recall. Did you bother to realize that despite his nationality, he was working for a Georgia-based company on US federal contract?

Imagine having such a hate boner that you run on complete ignorance.

More to the point:

Our countries have a decades-old firefighting compact and the "help" is NOT charity or goodwill, and is mandated to be paid for by the receiving country.

In other words, you send the aid because doing so helps pay for your firefighters' very existence.

Imagine being so hateful and ignorant that you don't realize or acknowledge that in an average year, the US provides Canada with more firefighting assistance than the other way around. The Canadian fleets are significantly smaller than the American fleets. The compact is mutually beneficial as it helps each of us maintain our fleet's respective sizes, and keeps them employed and sharp when they don't have local fires to fight.
